* I think I need to say this again because of what is going on in my Tumblr notes. I am against the rape, torture, and murder of civilians, especially children REGARDLESS OF WHO IS DOING IT. Yes, that means Hamas. Yes, that means the IDF/Israeli government. It also means the US Military. It means ANYONE doing it.

I can be against it whoever is doing it.

Opposing Netanyahu for his horrific policies does not mean I hate Jewish people. Being against the things that were done to civilians on October 7 doesn't mean I hate all Palestinians, nor that I support genocide. I am very much against genocide whoever is doing it. See also my opinions on the Holocaust, what Russia is doing to Ukraine, the horrific shit my government and Canada's and Australia's did to indigenous people over centuries.

I can be against Netanyahu the way I am against Trump, Putin, and Viktor Orbán.

The Israeli government is a government. It is wrong and antisemitic to blame every Jewish person everywhere in the world for things they may not support and didn't have a say in unless they specifically support and/or voted for Likud or one of the right wing parties they coalition with. Jewish people inside and outside of Israel have been and are protesting war crimes the Israeli government has committed. It is possible to have a nuanced understanding of Israeli politics.

It strikes me as pretty weird to claim all Jewish people only have one opinion about everything and to call me antisemitic for opposing one particular politician for doing things that are harmful.

I do, in fact, want all hostages free, both the ones Hamas have and the ones the Israelis have. It sure looks to me and to a lot of people, including some rather vocal families of hostages, that Netanyahu has deliberately and repeatedly stood in the way of this happening for personal political gain and so that he can stay in power and out of jail for corruption he's credibly accused of.

My holding this opinion is very similar to my opinion of Donald Trump. Just saying.

I want Netanyahu out of power because that is the only way there is a chance of anything getting better in that part of West Asia. Which is the goal. I have been in favour of the two state solution since I was old enough to understand, which is longer than a lot of you have been alive, or at least longer than many of you have been old enough to follow the news. I have seen good and bad Israeli and Palestinian leaders come and go. I've seen Netanyahu break agreement after agreement over for decades whenever he's been in power. I don't trust him to make an agreement he will follow any more than I trust Trump to make one, especially when Netanyahu's personal agenda conflicts with that agreement, because that is how he has behaved over and over, including him not holding up his end of the ceasefire just recently.

My side is not that of one government, not even my own. My side is the greater good and the lets not murder children side. It pretty much always has been.

I'd love for the violence to be over. I'd love for everyone's kids to be safe. That's the side I'm on.

This is the same sort of thing, Round up a bunch of Venezualan refugees and rendition them without legal justification or due process while demonizing them to whip up hate they can use to move the Overton window towards fascist autocracy so they can do this to anyone they want.

The Secret police had their faces covered and grabbed her without identifying themselves. When challenged they eventually said what agency they were from but didn't show proof or give their names.

I am completely fucked if my check doesn't come. They start assessing late fees for housing after seven days. The Bank fee for this auto-withdraw will likely overdraw my account. No gas, no electricity. My insurance will try to auto-withdraw mid-month causing bank fees to continue to grow exponentially. I am contractually required to have insurance on my apartment. I can't cancel it. I can't drive without gas or car insurance and I am disabled with very limited mobility. A bus pass costs about a months gas an requires lots of walking I can't do or someone else doing a lot of walking pushing my in a chair because my arms are fucked too.

* Thursday a week ago, I had thought I was likely going to crash again 2AMish as I woke up exhausted, headachy, with all my joints screaming at me, but it got better about 2-3, so I soldiered on and got the aggregate out. Friday, I was well enough to do almost bare minimum physio, which I'm counting as a win.

My hopes of being super productive Friday night failed, alas, but for good reasons. The cats were doing Peaceable Kingdom in my bed, so I read most of Tidal Creatures while administering pettins on demand and cuddle naps for cats. I also had a bunch of small things needing doing I'd been in too much pain to handle around the Cat Asylum, which I spaced out in classic chronic pain fashion in between rests. Also I fell down a medieval history rabbit hole for about an hour. <.< >.>

Tonight was I was also migrating another function across to Killian laptop, and inevitably diving in and out of settings as I found things needing tweaking. This is why it generally takes several weeks to get a lap top going right, and this time having to use waterfox classic instead of standard waterfox meant I had to rethink job distributions, since a bunch of extensions don't work on classic. Limited utility means I need to switch some functions for other browsers. It's mostly sorted now, though I may need more tweaks.

Part of why Thursday worked out so well for me is I'm getting better at the new work flow pattern, so certain things can move a little faster.

So progress, basically, even though it feels like running on sand.

* Thursday this week, I had to stay up for painful x-rays and doctor prodding, as well as to have blood taken. The x-rays were incredibky painful as my hip joint are terrible right now and it's a lot of standing in fixed positions. My shoulder joint healed correctly. I have been released in the wild to do more at home physio. I am to focus particularly on inward motion, which means I will need to get creative. Sigh.

* So about a week and a half ago, a friend sent me NasalCrom to see if it could make a dent in my chronic sinus infection/sinusitis situation. It's really impressive, as it turns out. My sinuses have been slowly draining, which is not pleasant, but neither was several years of sinus headaches and the constant need to manually drain them 1-3 times a day depending on how much worse my allergies to Outside are making things. This, at least is progress towards an actual solution.

* Saturday a week ago I was well enough to start running my table top game again. Livia came out to watch her stories, as the Gazebo birds are back and she hates missing the late afternoon/early evening bit as they all flutter about in easy view before bird bed time. She pretended Head Millennial was not there, Brave Girl. Sunday we did errands, then after ate dinner and watched the back half of season one of resident Alien. Tavy has been unsure how to handle two of his people sitting on the sofa at the same time, but this time decided to take the plunge. He sat in a bunch of places including Head Millennial’s lap, and at one point rubbed his face on their hair.

Not long before bed, I had another incident, but caught it in the early stages and applied ice. Acutely painful, but not dangerous enough for the ER since i caught it early enough, so that’s a win. It did mean I needed lots of rest though. I am not even sure how it happened this time, since there was no obvious precipitating injury, which is worrying.

* So some friends of mine are moving and needed me to drive them around a bit and another friend drove up to help, only they didn’t need me the way they thought. The other friend did the afternoon driving, but I couldn’t get back to sleep. I did come along and bring cardboard boxes and food for the new place. We ate outside on their new place’s patio and had a little visit, but there was a lot of standing and cardboard wrangling and the pollen count is high and I had very little sleep. I went to bed early Friday instead of posting the aggregate as i had intended.

The extra spoons I burned Friday meant I had very little energy plus an allergy headache. After I took the head Millennial home I drove up there to help with transport. I didn’t get home until 11:15. I am a mess. I have spent nearly all the EBT, which is bad. I blew more tonight on things like yogurt. I know, I know, the aggregate’s super late. I still have what feels like a million links still needing to scaffold.

I am tired. I itch from all the trees mating. I do not know how I will manage until June without the surgery as it is incredibly hard to sleep like this.

Oh, in the middle of the medical crisis we got notice of fire inspection, which means I had to fix it myself. I did work out that a particular adapter might make the unit Squirrel bought work. I had too buy a bundle, since they aren’t sold individually online, and I hadn’t energy to search every hardware store in town even if it wouldn’t cost more in gas than the adapters cost. My theory that the adapter would work proved true, but the detector squirrel bought didn’t fit the bracket, so squirrel had to duct tape it up there. (They no longer make the model that came with the apartment. squirrel bought a different brand, apparently). Anyway, it works even if it is ugly.

Things like this and the the extra food I bought during the worst of the crisis and endless small things needing fixed or repaired ate away the money I’d tried to save for a working stove. *head desk* I am so fucking tired of my body and the apartment falling apart, but here we are.

So here's the thing, in both the elite sports and the ballet world, people have been switching countries significantly longer than I've been alive. It a thing that happens. It's normal. There are a lot of reasons for it. sometimes, as during the Cold war, people outright defect(ed) because they think they will have a better life in the other country. This is an extremely familiar narrative even to people who don't follow figure skating (or ballet, or certain other sports), but it's not the only reason people do this.

In figure skating, it's incredibly common for people who are good, but live in a country with a large number of good skaters to, you know, move somewhere where they have more opportunities. People with duel citizenship will often pick the country with less competition for top slots because things like the Olympics max out a countries entries at three. If there are say four or even five of you vying for a limited number of slots at say Worlds or the Olympics, maybe it's worth staying, but what if you have an option to grab the one spot some other country has instead of fighting your way into those limited slots?

Keep in mind, a lot of those smaller countries very much want an elite skater to help build a program in their country and for the international prestige. They will welcome a duel citizen with open arms. Similarly, the child of emigres. Some of them will actively recruit athletes who've signaled an interest in leaving despite a lack of ties. (This happens in lots of Sports. Remember that Belarusian runner who defected in a Japanese airport who got taken in by a third country?) So if your country has no potential Olympians, or only very weak contenders, it really does make sense on both sides.

Last I checked eight Russian figure skaters were expected at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, five of them skating for other countries because the Russian women's single skate program is so incredibly dominant right now. If you are in the top four or five, might as well go be the best woman's single skater in some other nearby country.

You also get good skaters from smaller countries moving to live somewhere else without changing citizenship to be where the best coaches are. This is incredibly normal. you also get pairs and dance skaters who end up deciding to partner with someone from another country, who have to change citizenship so they can skate together. My point is, a lot of people live and train in one country and compete for another, or have moved between countries as they think is best for their development as skaters.

Would I want to pick China to switch to? No. Surveillance, genocide, concentration camps, rising anti-queer sentiment, etc., but I can see why the level of state support china gives their elite athletes might attract someone who was talented but not likely to get much support or exposure in the US. It's not the choice I would likely make, but I can understand someone who did, especially someone with her background. This really likely was her best option, possibly her only option besides skating here. Keep in mind, most athletes above a certain level have lived and dreamed and sacrificed most of their childhood and teen years to try to do this one thing very, very well. It's easy for people who never were that kind of choice to judge that choice harshly. I prefer exercising a little empathy.

Last winter Olympics, there was a Kazakhstani ladies single skater who was good enough to score two slots for her country. There were not two women at the right level to fill those slots and there was a controversy, because the second best Kazakhstani lady figure skater came anyway instead of that slot to the next eligible person from another country. and yes, it sucked that that other woman didn't get to go, but realistically, neither of these women were going to medal. So picture for a second if you were an amateur Kazakhstani skater and you had a once in a lifetime chance to travel to Korea to skate on televisions all over the world wearing your tiara. Realistically, I'd guess 99% of us would have been skating in our tiaras even if the world called us selfish. It's nice to say, oh, you'd cede that slot, but no one offered you one. I don't think any of us know we'd for sure say no.

Also, you know why Zhu Yi was skating for China in Beijing? They literally had no woman single skater better than her. No really. When I heard China was going to the team event, I thought, "Huh. Who's they get for the woman's single skate?" Because I could think of anyone this cycle at that level to take the slot. when I saw who it was, I was like, oh! I vaguely remember her from pre-pandemic. Which means she was good enough for me to have seen her and for to have made some sort of impression though not a strong one either way. If China had a woman with a 60+ short, she'd have been in that slot. Ask yourself seriously, in her place, given a chance for better coaching and a ticket to the Olympics, would you really say no? Because I think a whole lot of armchair skate fans would say yes, even with all the stuff going on in China.

And then there is the extreme cyber bullying which makes me furious. She was clearly doing her best in the short. I have been listening to Canadian skate commentators every year since I moved up here in '98 and I have never heard them as quietly furious as they were during the long program at the harm people on social media heave done to this young woman. She is nineteen. A teenager. her whole life has been about trying to do this one thing she loved. She's not a murderer, like Kyle Rittenhouse, or a monster. She is a teenager who wanted to skate more than anything in the world and now hate is pouring down on her from all sides with no thought at all to her humanity or her youth. The cruelty of it. I just have no fucking words.

Of course she couldn't skate well under those conditions. Could you? Could anyone?

I don't know her. I'll never meet her, but oh do I have empathy for her, because this is a terrible thing for anyone to have done to them, especially a young woman with all the pressures that the world piles on young women just in general.

Fuckssake, can we think before we pile on? Expend a little empathy like the Canadian Skate commentators, instead of being the gears of hate grinding up young athletes trying to do their best in one of the most high pressure situations is possible for an athlete to be in.

* I had one of my perennial plague dreams. (I'm a life long plague watcher. 1 was a 14th century specialist before I parted ways with academia. I was dreaming about epidemics since the mid-to late 70's. So no, it's neither an AIDS thing nor a Covid thing.) In this one there was an outbreak of a weaponized... okay, not really small pox, but best described as some sort of Anthrax/smallpox cross? But not really. It was sort of an Anthrax timeline on latency and infection, with both pox and lesions and a small pox like rash following the lesions by about 12 hours, and lung symptoms.

A High school was the target, so the authorities locked it down and were trying to do quarantine and triage, but given how infectious small pox is... yeah. which is why the small town also had perimeter quarantine, since people could be infectious before the fever started and airbourne pathogens are bad.

I was lucid dreaming as is often the case. so I took to the air on the theory that a couple stories up was safer, grabbed a bedroll, provisions, etc. and was setting up camp on a roof top with a structure that could provide an overhang, as is a thing I often do in zombie outbreaks and epidemic scenarios in my dreams.

So I'm up on this roof top watching a massive crowd of parents and families gather in the sports fields around the school, all breathing on each other without masks and trying to press up on the National Guard as they worked themselves into an angry frenzy and it suddenly dawned on me: Anti-vaxxers are panicky nonsense south Park parents.

Bear with me. I hate south Park. I used to watch it while I was teaching because the kids were watching it, and it's good practice to read, watch, and listen to what they are consuming. It was essential to watch south Park in particular because 1. They'd tried to get around you using stuff from there and catching them every time taught them you were hard to trick that way. the more pop culture one was up on, the more they assumed one was basically omniscient and it solved a lot of problems before they started, and 2. The middle Schoolers would come in Monday morning with serious questions and concerns about what they saw and if they knew you knew south Park they'd ask you and you could use it for teachable moments, and things like that were where I did some of my best work as far as media literacy and getting kids to really think about what they are consuming.

But I fucking hate South Park for all the ways it's regressive and toxic. It's fed antisemitism and homophobia and transphobia and sexism and science denial and a whole host of toxic things in American culture. I hate it.

But, this connection I made in this dream has haunted me for two days. There's this thing the adults in South Park do where they hear something or something happens and they don't actually listen properly and they just panic and wildly over react and lose their shit and the next thing you know there's this mob of incensed nonsense spewing people who are violent or borderline violent.

I can't say one way or another if 25 years of this shitty regressive show being on the air and popular has caused this or merely reflects the shittiness always under the surface in American, but I saw that irrational nonsense and pathogen spewing crowd reacting exactly the wrong way in a pandemic and I thought of the anti-semetic South Park show with it's hysterical nonsense adults and the Neo-NAZIs making Ottawa unlivable right now and and Trumpist swastika waving anti-vaxxers beating up teachers and storming American state capitals and trying to overthrow the government and it just... felt like the same thing. idk. It's not deep, just an image stuck in my head from a dream.

* Friday: We're still having sporadic snow and I'm still trying to take apart the Gothmas trees.

Saturday: I timed errands to be out while Head Millennial was working, as there was no snow. When I got back, I hid in my room until he was gone. He did a short shift, as he can't safely take breaks or drink inside. Squirrel remains negative, but he could literally catch it any night and safety has to come first. I spent an hour trying to get the lights off the Halloween Trees, but they were very tangled. The Millenial sorted it. I just need to stow it all away until next September. I'm going to try running the microwave later off an extension cord. *fingers crossed* My body is being annoying in some rather standard for me ways, but at least I'm getting reasonable sleep.

* Monday, a bunch of the phone tag people caught me. On top of that? *headdesk* It turns out the Management company was trying to trick us into paying for the fire suppression system check. They hadn't sent a work order, which means they get to refuse the invoice, forcing us to pay for it. so I cancelled that. I need to call the management company tomorrow anyway because the city wants in writing why they refuse to fix the wiring.

Bonus, I went to start dinner before lungs so it could bake. When I went to check,the oven had glitched out. I knew the burners were failing as two barely heat anymore. Now it heats up, then waits until I've set the alarm and wandered off to shut itself off. Um, thanks? so we're down to two burners now. Who knows how long before they glitch out too?

Update: It won't turn on for more than a few seconds. It's done. Dinner was about 3/4ths cooked, which wasn't entirely pleasant, but not a food safety issue, me being vegetarian. One more problem to try to sort tomorrow, I guess, but I'm not sanguine.

* Tuesday I was up all day being a grown up. The short version is as follows: I called property management as soon as they opened to get assorted things in motion. I got the city and the property management in contact with each other over the wiring dispute. Everyone's decided to wait to see what the electrician says. The guy from the city came to poke around. The electrical system is an emergency; the oven isn't. (Tavy remembered the city guy from two years ago. He's not in the clowder, but Tavy likes him and sort of followed him around. He has this warm, gentle vibe that is soothing to cats even though he is wandering around in work boots). The City is still hoping the electrician will say something that will budge Property Management, but if he doesn't, the City Program will likely pick up the insurance copay, assuming property insurance will cover the rest. The copay, while impossibly large for me, a person on SSI, is cheap at the price for the city program, if that makes sense, and a lot more doable than solving the whole thing for them given how stretched they are from flood damage. It's not 100% assured as they are using an emergency fund instead of the regular procedure.

Property management sent the proper paperwork for the visit to inspect the fire suppression. (I thanked the nice lady again for giving me the heads up on them on Property management trying to trick us into a surprise bill when she called for afternoon reschedule). Our belief that the component was dead is confirmed. They can't fix it apparently and it requires an electrician. Electrician has hopes of a preliminary visit this week or next. I'll call tomorrow and tell them about the fire suppression component and see if we can two in one there. (They are very backed up as a third of the city still has electrical damage from the floods. We are lucky to be this close to a visit).

I had a long talk with my social worker, catching her up on all the electrical drama and associated battles. She's calling around to see if there is some solution for the stove to various service agencies. I'm to call her back next week or when there is an electrical update. (For those just tuning in, she's a medical social worker who specializes in services for the elderly and disabled She is a superstar, and very good at finding weird little grants and programs for her people. If she can't find something to sort the stove no one can.)

On the upside there have been some more donations and I am pretty sure I can catch up the regular bills I didn't pay due to the Brakes Emergency. I'll know for sure that my maths tally up correctly in a few days. Squirrel thinks he can float the electrician visit. My next concern is the medical copay and the car tab bill that comes any day now, but I can’t deal with those until I know where I am on the biggest bill left.

I am thoroughly exhausted and down to the last few spoons. It is only Tuesday. I really need things to stop breaking, because it really feels like everything is caving in on my head at once.
