* Torture appointment actually let out early because my shoulder was being a douche. I was still pretty chewed up when I set out for MRI in full dark of Northern winter morning. It ended up being a drama because the branch location is so new I've only been once so was unclear on it's location which i discovered after I left. Morning rush hour traffic jams in the dark are the worst in my opinion. In an evening in the dark traffic jam people are properly awake and respond better to sudden breaking after going 50-60 for a while. I got there ten minutes after check in time, which put me ahead of the appointment time and in any case there was the usual wait on the person ahead of me.

I have no phobias, which is helpful. It still really fucks up my body because immobilized and squeezed into a tube where it is very loud and sound chaotic is rough on my joints and my sensory system. So I don't like it, but I can handle it fine, if you follow. It is boring as I can't think properly in that sound environment, and there is a dramatic increase in pain and fall risk afterword. It is not even close to the worst thing that happens medically in a given year.

This one wasn't to bad as these things go, says a person who had their entire spine surveyed more than once. Fifteen minutes. I lucked out a little on the music as three of the five songs were actually both good and very familiar, if not things I'd pick myself.

My arm was too fucked up for home physio before bed and in any case I was too tired. I was good and did a little phone bureaucracy, but I was in extreme pain and completely worn out when I went to bed to try to catch the fivish hours of sleep I was allowed today.

Bwahahaha! No. Every time I tried to drift off the phone rang for the next twoish hours. One required me to get dressed and let people in, since I'm the person on my floor Amazon can reach. It was at this point I gave up and slept in my clothes even though the seams and confinement and wrinkles make it so much harder to sleep. I feel like eight phone calls in two hours is really excessive, but this is what sleeping while disabled is like.

I was so exhausted I ended up going back to bed after errands to sleep until dinner.

I had one of my complicated speculative fiction dreams. The special effects were Amazeballs. Good on you subconscious CGI!

This just in: The really elaborate surgery is now off the table. They think a classic total joint replacement is enough. So go me!

* My car broke yet again in late October and again in early December. As I feared in October, it was the hose that keeps the engine cool. Why feared? It's in the middle of all the gear under the hood. Hose and fluid replacements are cheap. an hour and a half of labor to take it all apart then put it back in is incredibly expensive.

As I suspected the December failure has turned out to be a different part of the computer/sensor system going with similar results as to one of the breakages last spring. This is also about an hour of labour and a part they need to order that costs about as much as the labour. It is again, a part hidden in the middle of the car. Sigh.

The good news is two generous donors turned up Thursday and Friday with the result that I not only have enough to cover the repair when the part arrives, but I can pay the most urgent and largest of the non-housing bills I pay every month, plus the car insurance auto withdraw. I'm about $100 short for the month, but that's dramatically less dire. (Thank you donors! I went to bed Friday terrified I wouldn't be able to pay the mechanic and woke up rescued.) * I haven't written much about my doings lately. Enough has been going on, I forget what i've written and what I hadn't. The air outside is hot and muggy which is exhausting for me, and thus I've been even slower than usual about most things, needing more rest.

Friday a week ago, I learned that I've shrunk a full inch. I remember my mother shrinking. it was particularly obvious because while we spoke on the phone a great deal, we only saw each other every few years. They don't measure one often as an adult, so it was still a surprise. I had attributed my difficulty in reaching things to the deterioration of my arms. I think I also unconsciously associate shrinking with white hair, and the individual gray strands are still only visible in certain lights. I am fully aware of all the other deterioration. I started developing jowls this spring, for example, and I now am apt to fall over when i pick things up off the floor. I suspect i am ddeveloping the beginnings of a hump. Still, i hadn't thought about shrinking and an inch feels like a lot.

We are now two weeks in a row of no friday morning cleaner. Last time Tavy panicked when Forage delivery arrived because he KNOWS the cleanedr arrives first. He kept trying to enlist me to go search the bushes in case his cleaner was lost in there. This week, he took it more calmly.

We had a good time at the lake last Sunday, but made an essential error. We decided to try a different section and it was rockier and shallow for a much longer distance. My strategy is to hang on to a helper until in is just deep enough for me to drop down and move like one of those fish evolving to walk until it's deep enough to really swim. It took ages to get deep enough not to drag myself across rocks. The spot we'd picked for our base camp was nice though. Better sand, better view, better shade, less crowded. I'm never going in that way again, but we make keep picking it for picnics.

* Monday morning over a week, the apartment smelt like a forest fire. I was really exhausted and struggling with lungs and sinuses all day. After midnight, the long absent breeze blew in from Alaska to clear the smoke away. Tuesday was much better.

* Wednesday, I collected Head Millennial and Techie Millennial downtown. We did errands and after techie Millennial worked on outside decoration while head Millennial dis assorted other things. This was a lot of excitement for Tavy, but also a confusion for both cats. Livia kept hearing it was quiet and coming out to see if they'd gone only to find one or more still there. The horror! Tavy did not know which of the three of us to follow around.

At one point Head Millennial went off to a local shop on break while techie and I were working on patio decoration. From Tavy's perspective, we all three went out the patio door and were doing something interesting, only Head Millennial had disappeared. He kept escaping to try to check the bushes. He was so concerned, Livia came out and was peering worriedly over his shoulder to try to work out what was upsetting him. we still have a bunch of interior stuff to finish, but most of the boxes are back in their closets, and at this point, exterior stuff is the priority, since the interior stuff stays up until the first week of January.

REMINDER: We are doing my Birthday party Saturday. an out of town friend arrives for it Friday intending to spend the weekend. I am going to be terribly busy and this will effect posting.

NOTE: I am super behind on the aggregate as the air quality issue is messing me up. This means news is going to me sporadic and often late. Apologies.

* I had hoped to post the aggregate before going offline for several days. Obviously, that didn't happen. I'm also dealing with terrible air quality and a massive amount of pain, and I just kept needing to go to bed early. I am doing my best to catch up on all the stuff that didn't get done here and elsewhere. Bare with.

Oldest Continuous friend, aka the Pseudo-Sibling, arrived safe Friday and we hung out all afternoon and Evening. Saturday's party was excellent. (Everyone vaccinated. Four of us Omicron boosted, the others careful maskers). Sunday, Head Millennial made Lasagnas and the three of us had a really nice dinner. I picked up the Pseudo-Sibling after my morning appointment and we hung out until it was time for them to go. A grand time was had by all except Livia, who gave up and decided to pretend the guest wasn't here as there was important cat business she was putting off.

Testing went as expected for the most part, but yielded interesting new data regarding the Cantaloupe incident. I am wildly, wildly allergic to grass. I was mildly allergic as a kid, but it was mostly a matter of itching when forced to sit on it, but living for years in Eugene surrounded by grass farmers and burn clouds, I started really getting sick. This is no surprise. Two previous allergists treated me for grass, weed, and tree allergies, but after my mother died there was no way to cover the copay, so I stopped getting treatment. Modern Medicare covers it free, so here I am.

Apparently, in a tiny percentage of adults allergic to the two types of grass I am wildly allergic two (as opposed to somewhat or mildly allergic to), the pollen can bind to the proteins in certain fruits and vegetables anfd one can get a very bad reaction. The most common of these sets of fruit and vegetables this can happen with in the case of my worst grass species is cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, and cucumber. My instinct not to test honeydew and watermelon was the correct one. The cantaloupe that nearly set me to the hospital was from the height of grass season, thus the very worst time to eat one. The good news is there's a chance I'll get melons and cucumber back if I eat them early in the season and the treatments are successful, as I'm not actually allergic to the foods themselves. It was the equivalent of me swallowing fistfuls of grass.

It is so like me to have a rare reaction.

In other allergy news, we knocked out the tree I was allergic to last go round, which just leaves grasses and a couple of weeds. I am still not allergic to cats, dogs, and mites. I am never allergic to indoor anything, which allergist usually never believe and insist on retesting. This doctor believed me and the results of testing. I am so allergic to perennial rye that the big raised ball of rash was still driving me crazy at bedtime even with all the meds. It was dramatically worse than the positive control and the other really bad grass, which barely itched by that point.

Weird thing that came out of it. My previous allergic apparently moved and now shares a practice with current allergist, but all the old records are lost. O.o

When I went out for my free birthday pumpkin chai, it looked almost like the Dustbowl from wildfire particulates. I had to go inside because they closed the drive thru for air quality. It was that bad. Seriously do you know how bad it has to be out there for Starbucks to start caring about health and safety? It's hard not to stare at the sun when it's that shade of red. It's mesmerizing.

In other news, I'm still behind on bills, but I do have money to sort out the car for winter. It will be tight, but I have hopes of November working out.

* Tuesday evening, Head Millennial came to do a bunch of per-surgery house prep, even though it was his day off. seriously a superstar. The cats DID NOT Approve of being locked out of my room because of the anti-infection protocol. They kept gathering in front of the door and staring with a deep look of betrayal. Then I needed a nap, and they were locked out, poor buttons. Squirrel came home to find alarmed cats congregating outside my door, possibly concerned i had crawled in there to die, given how injured I obviously am. They were very relieved when I emerged, but clearly knew something is up. They eventually wore themselves out and crashed hard around one AM, poor buttons.

I did manage to get the things needing doing done between when I got up from the nap and 5Am transport. Also my ID fell out in the Taxi, leading to later drama, but it was all right. The medicare card stayed in the book where I'd tucked it, and they were willing to check me in with that. I travel light to the hospital: comfortable clothes, assorted ID (sometimes paperwork they are likely to need, but not this time), a book for the long waits, and a mask. I don't bring any people, because really, I just want to read and what sort of monster drags extra people into a hospital waiting room to make them sit around for five or six hours, especially during a pandemic, unless they have to be there because of disorientation, dementia, mental health, or translation issues? (Some people do need a helper and that's okay. I don't.)

Everyone was really nice at the hospital. I still find the morning prayer announcement unnerving, though now it's more non-denominational and good thoughts instead of a formal prayer. In any case, being first cut of the day for that operating room, meant no delays. Surgery was routine and about an hour. They moved me out of acute recovery pretty quickly, as i was pretty clearly compose mentos and doing fine after the initial ten minutes, and the lady I was sharing the male nurse with was having a very bad time of it. (I really felt terrible for her).

Anyway, I had ice, juice, crackers and meds in the regular recovery station and Squirrel took me home. I ended up having to do a lot of phone bureaucracy and not just for the missing ID. (There has been an ongoing drama between the nebulizer people and my doctor that's been delaying shipments. I thought it was settled last week. Apparently it was not. This is why i stockpile meds. If I didn't, I'd be doing all this plus a particularly brutal allergy season without meds for the last two weeks. This is NOT the doctor's fault. Some of you may remember the resent drama with me trying to get a replacement machine awhile back and the ensuing nightmare with not being able to get treatments until I was hypoxic. Fun times! There was another medical equipment thing that was my fault, and I decided to sort out while I was at it and some pharmacy stuff and a thing i decided to sort since it was on the same paper with the transport phone numbers. The cab guy did eventually bring me the Id back, so that's okay. I took naps where i could.

Tavy has been alternating jealous/clingy and bitey for about two weeks when I started deteriorating rapidly. He's also been sassy with Head Millennial, which is in a sway a sign of how much he adores him This continues, though he's starting to calm down as of Thursday afternoon. Livia decided I was probably a doppelganger sent by the vet to trick her into a crate judging by my smell, so it was a rather tense time here at the cat asylum for a while. (If Livia hasn’t seen one of us for enough hours, she is wary that we might be doppelgangers. It’s a whole thing, but if it was just squirrel at work or me shopping, she usually decides we’re okay quickly. This time I was moving funny and smelled like hospital. It’s a reasonable concern.) Head Millennial took great care of me all evening. Went I got up for the 2:45 ice/meds, etc., I finally convinced Livia I probably was me and she got her proper bed pettins. The cats are still concerned, but cautiously optimistic.

Head Millennial came in the evening to take care of me. He did a wonderful job. The mashed potatoes are plentiful. I have lots of pre-cut fruit. He took care of assorted small stuff I couldn't handle myself, including watering plants, cat things, laundry folding. (I did two loads of laundry Tuesday because everything needed to be pristine.) He was a superhero. There is no way i could have handled any of this without him. He set me up with last meds and fresh ice for bed before leaving.

I am of course heavily drugged still, but I've had at least two worse surgeries than this, and a different one of the same severity in the same region of the body. (The removal of Herberton, a tumor colony the approximate size and shape of my brain.) I'm being very good about doing my anti-blood clot and post-op pneumonia exercises, and I'm doing fine as long as I don't move much or worse bend over *shudder* Money for food I don't have to cook or oven replacement is welcome as I'll likely be ready for better food by the weekend. (I am currently living on fruit, crackers, and mashed potatoes and am thinking about maybe some soup later). Expected recovery is five weeks, which is no surprise at all, as I’ve been here before. The first week is the rough bit, with the first couple days the worst.

The quality of news prepped after Tuesday may be low and somewhat redundant as frankly the Ukrainian things are mushy in my head. I do apologize for this, and hopefully by the time the next aggregate goes up, i will be way more together.

* Friday, Livia got her appetite back and I actually saw her playing. By Saturday, Tavy had transitioned out of "Human Must Be Guarded At All Times" mode into normal for Tavy mode. So far no signs of infection. I did go into shock Friday because I pushed a little to hard and am characteristically apt to stretch too long between pain meds doses. (Long time readers will know about the bad reaction a lot of people on my mom's side of the family have to both opioids and anti-psychotics. I luckily didn't inherit the full on version of it, but opioids are legitimately unpleasant for me to take. Imagine the taste of holly bark and the smell of diesel fumes mixed with crushed snake in a metal garbage can in July. Now imagine that smell/taste combination was a feeling in the back of your head mixed with a generalized malaise and you, too, would go as long as you can bear between oxycodin doses.)

This is so much more manageable than pre-surgury was. Sure, I need a stupid amount of sleep with very little warning and if I move wrong it feels like the Ides of march, but most of the time, it's just itchy and exhausting instead of my body endlessly screaming that Something Is Wrong 24/7 and almost as exhausting. On the scale of surgeries I've had this is only the forth most dire. Trust me, this was very worth it.

* Sunday the pain from the wound woke me up, which meant getting an ice pack and starting over with the increasingly complex propping system required to protect the deteriorating shoulder, hip, and lesser joints while also coddling the wound and doing what I can to de-emphasize the constant sensory overload the wound causes. (My theory is that given it's placement and nature, the displacement tickles the nerve endings in a part of my body really prone to set off sensory overload. So I'm always in low level overload and it gets super bad periodically when things ramp up. This also makes it incredibly fucking hard to sleep even when the pain is not that bad.) Remember, if I move even a centimeter off postilion, my right shoulder is completely fucked for at minimum the next day. Now imagine what happens if any of a rapidly increasing number of pillows and smaller props moves or my torso shifts, or... yeah. Luckily, I've been holding my spine in the correct position since at least 1992.

Anyway, Head Millennial has a list of regular things needing doing, and projects and is perfectly capable of self supervising, plus directions to let me sleep if I'm napping as likely I very much need it for pain reasons. 7:45ish, he did check in as he needed a thing from the store to continue and was planning to walk. The ice had worked and I was like wait five minutes and we'll go together so I can get one that will last a couple decades instead of breaking in six months, it's not that much more expensive. So we went. Bonus, I got juice, which I couldn't get the last few stores we checked as they hadn't the right kind, and I need the extra nutrients right now. then there was the waiting in line and the rest of the stuff HM was doing, and we ended up searching for a book that had been missing since Summer I use all the time for reference, and then dinner, and finishing the show we were watching and dinner and taking them home and my lung treatment and, and...

It was well past Midnight when I logged on only to discover I'd lost data because I hadn't posted the aggregate fast enough. I could replace most of what was lost, but I literally couldn't remember some of the older things so ooops. Invisible to y'all, I'd lost a bunch of other data I use for Tumblr management which I could recreate if I was willing to invest the time in sorting things out. Aggregate posting/recreation/scaffold cleaning plus getting that back cost about two hours. Guess how much is likely to get done tonight?

At least I am drinking vitamin c as I type.

* In the middle of the recent medical emergency, Tumblr raised the queue limit to 1000 from the wildly inadequate 300. Given my post rate, 300 is about two days of advance loading for day posting most of the year for me. it means I can take a night off in an emergency, but some thing start thinning way out fast. 1000 gives me so much more freedom. I wrote this on 4/11. The lowest queue category is 4/17. I have most of my national Poetry month Poetry posting sleeve filled. Odds are I will reach early May in the fuller sleeves tonight.

It may seem a small thing, but it's the first time since I joined the site that an official "upgrade" has been an improvement if you don't count them changing the shade of blue being slightly easier on my eyes. Every other upgrade that hadn't already been one of my xkit setting made things worse, somethings much worse.

I just keep being startled that staff would ever do anything that benefits rather than harms me. Now if they'd roll back the three "improvements" from the last few years that made the site less accessible for me as a disabled person on things I do there pretty much every day.

* So here's what's going on: I can't remember if I told y'all they had an opening at the hospital, so they moved my exploratory procedure up to next week. This is a good thing, given how quickly I'm deteriorating. It is quite possible in two weeks I'll be properly medicated and feeling better, assuming I don't also have cancer. I'm going to have a bunch of medic al stuff next week just generally, just like this week.

In other news, my glasses were ready a week early, so I am adjusting to bifocals again. These lack the line and are disconcerting if I move my head wrong, but are a dramatic improvement over the emergency non-bifocals I've been wearing and today was easier than yesterday, so I've hopes of being adjusted soon. These are by far the nicest glasses I've owned ever.

In other news, three of the millennials came over for an outdoor chargen picnic, held in accordance with current CDC guidelines. At some point in June my local friends will all be out of COVID jail. (Currently Squirrel, one of the Millennials, and I are all completely done. The others are half vax).

* I kept getting awakened Friday. Except for another beg from the Police Union, they were all important calls, but having long conversations, fetching my calendar etc., is not good for quality sleep.

Saturday I was too uncomfortable to sleep much. We did go and buy way too much juice and restricted diet/sick people foods for me to eat. I'm already in restriction, but I go up a level Monday and it gets worse from there. I need to sort out transport to the hospital, which is meant to be free and easy on my health plan, but the 24/7 number didn't connect. Like no error beep or message. No Ringing. Just dead line. Mmmmm... thanks? I spent like an hour looking for the direction sheet to get the number that went nowhere. I then tried typing in the title from the direction sheet which led me to another non-working number. O.o I added more search terms, found more directions. The first number it listed tried to sell me direct TV. WTF!?! The second number sounded correct, but says they are only Monday through Friday which is clearly not correct. My options are now call them Monday and see if they can give me the correct number or call my Social Worker and see if she has it. I don't understand why they would send me a directiion sheet with the wrong number and why my health plan site also lists a fake number.

squirrel will collect me after the proceedure and is trying to get off work. Caregiver Millennial has agreed to come and look after me in the evening. We plan to make good lemonade and sweet tea to store in the fridge on sunday, amoung other things.

I apparently have two different medical appointments at opposite ends of the day Monday. Fun!

* Monday was a nightmare. a scammer woke me at 7:59, fifteen minutes before the alarm. I spent a stupid amount of time trying to straighten out medical stuff on the phone. I spent the morning on medical stuff and other errands, all involving long waits, most of it standing up in stunning pain. I do not resent the lady with the baby taking one of two waiting room seats. I do resent the other six able bodied people who monopolized them during my 45 minute wait to drop off my specimen. I am visibly disabled, with a crutch and was obviously in massive pain, but I guess those able bodied people needed those two chairs more.

I went home to eat and lung and the like, then went out again for more medical stuff. Luckily the pre-proceedure COVID testing was drive through and very efficient. I am exhausted and in terrible pain. I get to do more medical stuff tomorrow. Sigh.

* In the first half of March, I suspected I had contracted a persistent, annoying low grade infection at some point. This is a normal thing that happen A LOT with people who have the kind of chronic illness I have. (I've also been having hives and mouth ulcers off an one since whatever week the lung emergency started, which is also a normal, extremely unpleasant thing that happens some times with a body like mine. I only mention this because it's particularly fucking bad tonight, and also having two of these bits of nastiness going on is geometrically unpleasant.) Nothing could be done about the infection because my Doctor was booked more than a month out. She took the usual symptom history and sample. I said I was pretty sure it was bacterial, but I'd wait for results instead of starting on the assumption I was right as this thing isn't ramping, it's persisting and the best fit antibiotic is Nasty. If it were something I thought might ramp, I take home the antibiotics and put them on a shelf until I know how it's going to go either from tests or sudden scary ass escalation. Thursday early evening tests came in. I was right again on it being Bacterial. (I am good at thing particular guessing game.)

Today I picked up the Monster antibiotic, listened carefully to the warnings and swore a solemn oath to take all the little bastards. This one has an ugly set of warnings. I've disconned my non-narcotic arthritis meds, which means I get a choice of Tylenol or opioids and nothing the fuck in between for a long ugly week. I need to watch the fuck out of what I eat, because of a hidden ingredient issue that can lead to me having a night from hell if I miss something. I was about 5 1/2 hours in when I wrote this and had already maxed out the anti-nausea meds.

This is going to be a rough ride. It needed to be done though as Thursday evening I spotted the warning signs of a ramp up and it was unpleasant enough by Friday morning that waiting the weekend was out of the question. I'm going to have to white knuckle it.

The politics of what's going on here are very much worth paying attention to. I'd like to make super clear I am 100% for holding every single one of them legally accountable for child abuse who was involved directly or covered it up. If you've followed me any length of time you know that already. I also have a serious problem with abuse of authority, such as a Professor sleeping with a student or a psychiatrist sleeping with a patient, even if both are adults, since there is a serious issue of true consent given the power differential and all the ways the one with so much more power and coerce, manipulate, and generally ruin someone's life if they say no.

The issue here is according to some reports Viganò is combining his attack on pedophilia cover up and sexual abuse of vulnerable adults by someone with authority over them with an attack on consensual sex between men in the clergy in general. Not the same thing at all. (I don't read Italian and the complaint is massive so I'm relying on English language reporting of the contents. Take this with a grain of salt).

Also, it sure looks like Viganò is guilty of exactly the thing he's accusing Pope Francis of, which makes me side eye his claims that he's championing zero tolerance. Shouldn't Viganò turn himself over to authorities first if he's so keen on it? Just saying. Look, I haven't the information I'd need to assess Viganò's claims against Pope Francis, but it sure looks like Viganò has a political motive and his hands aren't clean, so I'll wait for a better source on the substance for now while side eyeing the conservatives in the Catholic hierarchy. Again, not a Francis fan and willing to be convinced by proper evidence from a less shady source, but for now this looks like conservative attempt to curtail even the mild, half ass reforms Francis has attempted

* I did manage to drag myself out to forage, though not as early as intended, so I had to take far parking and the pickings weren't great. I looped to the library, then dropped off three boxes of comics for them to sort through. (I carried the lightest one in on my head; a worker there carried the other two much to my relief). I'll go back in a week or so to see what I can get for them. (It would be totally unreasonable to turn up three hours before close with that much stuff and expect random employees to look through them while trying to deal with normal customers, so I told them to take their time and I'd come back. They looked relieved, and honestly, I think they'd rather put the decision making in the owner's hands instead of trying to handle something like that themselves). I've hopes of help Saturday with taking stuff upstairs and resorting the storage unit as I've hopes of finding a box of missing comics and another box that ought to be up their of other things i'd like down here. Also, we did not efficiently tetris the storage unit when we were bringing things down to sort. I figure I can keep reading through things I need to decide on and put them in the not full boxand maybe a second box when it comes to it, and this way I can get the boxes out of my livig room so I can start doing Gothmas maybe next week. It's going to be more complicated than usu al with the decorations we found when sorting the storage unit, since obviously that stuff isn't sorted into Gothmas phases and I only half remember what all might be in there. I am kind of excited to see what I have, really.

I'm still off my feed and endlessly tired, but I really am much better. I am really enjoying this whole last year's vaccine making it so my body can handle pathogens without antibiotics most of the time thing. I'd almost forgotten what that was like and am enjoying it while it lasts.

This is the best year I've had for tomatoes since moving away from home. I've been having them fresh from the vine since they started coming ripe. First the garden saves me in spring when all my lettuce varieties were going gang busters while there was a commercial shortage due to contamination. Now I've all the tomatoes I could possible want when there are hardly any in forage. I love my garden. I love it's smell and having growing things to look at every day even though the space is very small.

The cats are really loving getting the whole window area back from the fans. They are going to be terribly disappointed when the Halloween village goes up for the Gothmas season. This evening at the end of treat time, one of the gazebo birds flew past the window and they galloped off in unison to look, then stayed to enjoy the show the wind was putting on by making all the plants wave and wiggle enticingly. I hope this means the start of the windy season. I've not tried to put the fans away both in case of a last minute heat wave and because it's more efficient to do it when I pull the Gothmas stuff out of the bedroom closet. I am so done with summer and am loving the perfect September weather we've had the last few days. I am an Autumn person and always have been.

* Not only did the pain keep waking me up, but I got a phone call from my birth state about my birth certificate. They not only doubled the price of a replacement, but are being total assholes about my surgery letters. they do not like the wording, which means I'll have to call around for new surgery letters. Oh, and what it ays on the website about gender marker changes is a lie. They are being way stricter than the law requires. I still qualify, but I suspect a lot of people aren't getting new birth certificates on the grounds that the vital records people are bigots enforcing super strict guidelines that the actual law doesn't require. charming. I should have dealt with surgeon pone/email tag this after noon, but I'm still having trouble with my legs, spine, and now my head. I'm pasted together with some serious medication, shaking as hell, and the spoon count is super low so that every small action I take must be weighed in advance. I'm officially moving it to the next week' problem category. I know, I know, I'm lucky I wasn't born in a state like Texas that doesn't recognize trans folk at all, and given the traditional homophobia and transphobia of my home state, i should have known the easy gender marker change guidelines were a lie. Of course they make it ten times harder in practice. *head desk*

* I finished the Shepard's Crown. We are lucky this book exists at all. He'd finished the actual plot and was in the fleshing out phase when he died, so the book is complete, but slighter than it would have been if he had more time. We could easily have been left with fragments.

This book is heartbreaking. This book is an extraordinary thing to be written by a man so close to death, because it is fundamentally about people carrying on with what needs doing even though someone they love and admire and miss terribly is gone. It is a hopeful book about mourning. It is about the world going on and the next generation coming into their own while still holding the memory of what is lost.

Damnit, now I'm crying. What a beautiful gift for Mr. Pratchett to give up in his last months. Gnu.
