* I wrote this in response to someone's post about a Christmas Carol. (Mildly Edited.)

My Father was Marley every year from when I was a few months old until the year before he died. (He missed the last pageant because he was literally on his death bed, dying Christmas Eve.) He loved doing it the way he loved being a ghoul every Halloween to give out candy. The make up was rather similar and he spent years perfecting and aging both costumes. This was a man who owned his own chains, real steel so the rattle would carry. (The School chapel had excellent acoustics. It was a theater in the round situation, with the whole school assembled on three sides. The building had a sort of raised stage in the center of the cross. (4th side had choir, organ, robing room, storage, offices). The acoustics were designed so an unamplified would carry beautifully from the center stage.

You say "Marley" and I see my Father in his dingy shroud and the make up designed to make him look haggard and dead, raising his chains, and his booming voice wailing the monologue that started, "These are the chains I forged in life," punctuated by rattling chains to which they had attached the coffers of greed. He somehow honed a combination of real soul torment and skin chilling warning.

This will always be the Christmas Carol in my head. It was truly Haunting and very much drawn from the original story in tone and design.

* Back in... I'm pretty sure it was the summer of '90, I had a terrible Summer job at an electronics store. (The list of ways it was terrible is it's own saga I'm not going to get into here), Across from my station were a bank of big screen TVs that were attached to a lazerdisc player. (A laser disc was like a DvD only the size of a vinyl record). There was a whole long wall of TVs between me and there and these regular TVs all played one station off cable, to be determined by the manager. They were alwys on with the sound playing throughout the store. The Big creen TVs always had their sound off unless they were being demonstrated for a customer, but there would always be a disc playing. The store owned two discs. Some days they would play Clue. Other days they would play Haunted Honeymoon (which starred Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner, who was dead by then to my great sorrow, her having been my favorite on Saturday Night Live as a child). This was also under the manager's control and we were forbidden to touch the controls.

So imagine me eight hours a day four or five days a week watching these two films over and over from my work station. I have never watched either film with sound, but there was a time hen I knew every gesture. One weekend I watched Haunted Honeymoon for 24 hours in the course of three days.

Watching the departed Gilda Radner dance with her now widowed husband for what very possibly could have been the hundredth time that Summer I conceived a notion. I began to imagine her spirit trapped in the disc, doomed to endlessly go through these motions in silence day after day. I imagined I was watching a ghost dancing. I imagined the thing being as tedious for her as it was for me to be forced to watch her day in day out so I might pay my rent, but that it was also the only life the ghost had left, endlessly miming these same actions over and over. A Huis Clos (No Exit in English, but the original Half Closed better suits the play) half life that was a the sort of hell one is afraid to leave for fear of something worse. I pictured her saying "Fuck this!" and walking off frame, never to return. I pictured coming in one morning to see Gene Wilder dancing by himself, his dead wife fled in the night.

Eventually the Summer ended and I started junior year only to quit two weeks in out of boredom. I was tired of knowing what everyone was going to say about a book before they opened their mouths, tired of the tiny cliquish social system of St. John's, tired of Annapolis, and so I fled West, out of Frame.
