Know your state's schedule and where to vote. Make sure you and your friends are registered. If you are voting in person, plan how to get there.

If you live in an open primary state consider voting strategically. Otherwise, vote your heart in the primary. Remember how all those votes for Sanders and Warren pushed Biden and the party platform further left?

Remember to vote in all the races, not just the top of the ticket even if it's in a separate primary (as it is in my state). Who runs congress, your state, and your local government really matters. In some states this is a separate primary. Check the rules for your state.

Never, ever sleep on a chance to vote.

It is always better to vote for someone who will listen to us than to let someone who is actively trying to kill us.

* Monday, my body basically devised itself into at least three factions and did the equivalent of having a throne war in which no one was the winner and I was substantially the loser. The pain and general unpleasantness were hellish even by my standards. This also sent me into sensory overload, which just added to the torture of it all. In the process, I apparently did something terrible to myself below the skin of my abdomen. The first I knew of it was when I woke up after a few hours feeling like someone had attempted to slice open about 4-5 inches of my belly. I read the entirety of the recent Penric plague novel for me to get things back under control enough to steal a couple more hours of sleep. The injury still hurts when I move or anything touches it and it looks nasty. I will see if I can see a doctor, which gives you an idea how nasty the thing looks and feels. I burned my finger making dinner and ended up icing my stomache which helped some, as did scaling up my pain meds.

It worries me when I don't recognize a new thing that has gone wrong with my body.

On the upside, I did not break any toes last week and it turned out to be less damage than last time I damaged those particular toes. Was it last spring? So that was nice.

* To our great surprise, I tested negative for COVID. I guess that booster shot, plus our best efforts at quarantine protocol worked. This means that last weekend's terrible cold symptoms really were a head cold. Which I thought I was mostly over, but apparently not. Sigh. Squirrel seems to have caught it despite masking and quarantining in his room. idk. Maybe the food and medicine packages I handed off by putting them outside his door?

By current CDC standards he'd have been out of quarantine earlier in the week, but we opted for the older, stricter standards because there is debate about the new ones. He was supposed to be out tomorrow, but his cold came with a sore throat and is significantly worse than mine was even last weekend, so idk.

Being out of quarantine, I did curbside library pick up, much to Tavy's delight and had an excellent game of cat in Bag followed by the Ribbon Game. The poor little button has been pining for Millenials and when he hears people passing outside in the late afternoon/early evening runs to the nearest window to check.

I actually did have enough to catch up bills and cover the medical copay thanks to all you benefactors, plus get kibbles for the cats, as Livia's special girl kibbles ran out last week. (Long term readers will remember Livia nearly dying as a teenager. She has to have a special diet to prevent a recurrence so I can just get them ocean friskies or the like.). I'm still expecting a car tab renewal bill and then it's time to work out how to pay this year's housing tax, but there is no point in panicking until the bills arrive. For now, the cat asylum is afloat. Ish.

I keep eyeing my last two burners with concern. I keep trying to work out what I want for dinner then remember I can't make the thing because the oven's dead. I've never lived with out an oven before; it's disturbing.

But for now, we are all alive if not well, and housed for which we are grateful.

* I watch a lot of shows and movies not originally in English. I am one of those people who really likes subtitles. I use them with English language stuff anyway, because it helps cover if I have sensory processing issues with the dialog, so watching subtitled foreign language stuff isn't that different for me. Subtitles mean you keep the original vocal performance that can really matter.

At the same time there are problems. They with use white subtitles on white backgrounds or black subtitles on dark backgrounds, t which point, why subtitle at all? They will sometimes make them too small, as if everyone is watching on a massive screen. They will sometimes cover something essential with words that I kind of need to see. (some productions will move the subtitles around so they stay in negative space. Some subtitles with be white in a black band to cut down on the lack of contrast issue).

Then there are all the people subtitles don't work for. My Mother's eyes weren't good enough the last several decades of her life, which was unfortunate as she was also HoH for about that long. It sucked a lot of fun out of her life to have to give up anything with subtitles or accented English or muddy sound design. There are people who don't have the vision or literacy level. There are people with dyslexia and the like.

Yes, dubbing exists, but it's often, frankly a mess. No translation is ever going to be perfect. it's a fundamental problem with subtitles too. No language maps one to one on another. Information is lost and/or added inevitable. Ambiguity is created or lost. Often the dubbed performance is frankly bad voice acting.

Sometimes it is an adequate performance, but doesn't remotely match the tone of the original performance. I notice this a lot with things dubbed out of French. I'm no longer fluent and mostly only speak it to cats, but I was fluent once and as long as there isn't a thick regional accent or too much technical vocabulary or unfamiliar slang or they aren't going extremely fast, I can usually still follow.

There is a tendency to hire people with English received pronunciation type accents to do the voices for french costume dramas and the results are terrible. You have all these restrained upper class English performances that not only lose the class and regional nuances, but they are sort of flat and restrained vocals over often intense physical performances. It is so dissonant it hurts my head. They lose the tone siblings use to tease and bicker; they lose the angry arguments between heroine and villain; they lose the passion and warmth between friends or lovers.

A lot of the 19th century french literature I read back in the day would do these clever and often playful things with formal and informal language: describe something intimate in formal language, do something formal with bits of intimate language tucked here and there, that sort of thing. There is a flavour to it that I often find in the french dialog and performances, that gets utterly lost in translation. 18th and 19th century English language dramas tend to go either formal or informal. They don't play back and forth much. Inevitably I switch it back to french.

I don't know if it's this bad for other languages, but it wouldn't surprise me. But what if they decided to do better? The foreign language things I watch most often are either Korean or French. I frequently see people in major roles who I know also speak English well enough to act beautifully in English language productions. Why the fuck don't they spend the money to hire them to do the dubbing for their own characters? I know there are plenty of people who act in more than one language. Speak German and french? Why not dub the other language too? I bet the original actor would be better at preserving the tone of the performance than a stranger.

For monolingual actors, you could hire someone with a similar class and regional accent who comes from the original language group but also speaks the target language, so there'd be a better chance of carrying original emotional tone and meaning across even where the words can't quite convey by themselves.

And hire people who are good voice actors instead of doing it the cheap. Would it be perfect, no, but it would be better than some goofy sounding bad actor or a performance so off tone as to make it hard to watch. It would be something at least.

* I was not and am still not convinced that Peacemaker ought to be foregrounded by giving him a show, however, I am legitimately appreciating how queer the show is. There's marvel over there to scared to do anything like good representation, the little hints designed to be clipped out for China. (Do not start me on the people who wrote Loki not understanding what "gender fluid" means. yes, it's nice they tried, but it's not exactly hard to google that, or hire a nonbinary person onto the writing staff. just saying). Meanwhile DC is doing a Batwoman, a show full of queer women characters, Doom Patrol, etc., and now Peacemaker with multiple lesbian and bi characters. Watching the opening credits for the first episode I was wondering, "Is that bisexual lighting on purpose? Are they teasing me?" No, no they were not. So points there.

I am concerned about things like their uneven lighting for characters of color and a number of things about the basic show design. On the one hand, the horrible racist/misogynist characters are consistently called out by disgusted other characters, and the narrative seems to be of the same opinion. At the same time, having a horrible racist and misogynist right wing character as the main character the show is named after, even if they are clearly not the good guy has a messy history. Carrol O'Conner was a strong civil rights advocate, but an awful lot of right wing folks liked Archie Bunker and took that character as permission. Similarly, the Colbert Report was an elaborate mock of the Right, but a lot of the right didn't get the joke and took him for serious. The things Peacemaker and his father say are clearly terrible. That doesn't mean they won't reinforce that in our culture.

I like the women in this. A lot. I appreciate the horrifying psychopath friend/sidekick and associated humor. I appreciate the ruthless way the narrative and other characters treat Peacemaker. At the same time? I am afraid of where this is going. I do not want him to win over the blond agent. I am scared of an easy redemption arc that rewards him without drastic fucking change. Maybe it will be okay, but I don't trust like that. I'm sticking with it for now. Warily.

* I was angry about what happened to Monika Lewinsky while it was happening. Everyone else in the scandal was absolutely vile. The media and the comics decided to completely destroy her life. It was very there but for the grace and I had huge empathy for her. I love the person she grew up to be, and every time I see her out and about doing activism it makes be happy. She not only survived the terrible thing our whole society did to her; she took that trauma and made something beautiful and powerful out of it.

* Wednesday I spaced a Doctor's appointment. (In my defense, I was very aware of it Monday and planning to go, but they never sent a reminder call and scheduling on Tuesday and Wednesday was tight, so it just fell out of my head with all the other stuff I needed to remember). I remembered it about an hour too late. Sigh. The reschedule and the long wait times between nurse and doctor because they were squeezing me into cracks meant I only got a few hours of sleep.

Add to this that all the gimping about Wednesday led to my dicey left hip joint trying to dislocate itself later that night, which is a thing it just sort of does periodically, but hadn't for several years. The pain of even a failed dislocation is stunningly painful and means the leg stops being load bearing sporadically. Luckily, Thursday it waited until I was parked at home to make another series of attempts to escape it's socket. (This has to do with my AS made worse by things like the distance running and ballet in my youth. My cartilage is under constant attack by my immune system. Yes, I know this isn't a problem most people have. It was always the left hip joint that used to pop out. I think I must have done extra damage to it in my teens somehow). The weather being changeable enough to ramp my arthritis pain level way up is not helping either and is likely contributing though I can't prove it. I just know when I dislocate, it tends to be in autumn or Winter.

Also, I needed head Millennial for an essential project, which meant I needed to bail the tanks myself (Nearby Millennial is the best at all the other tank cleaning components, which I flat out can't do since the AS started gnawing that shoulder joint which sent the fragile right shoulder joint. Normally Head Millennial does the bailing when things are running smoothly, as it's something Nearby Millennial absolutely can't do), into it's own exciting pain Wednesday night. Luckily this is more remediable than the hip joint thing, and the measures I took Wednesday night moved it make into the unpleasanter end of functional, which is really all I could ask for given the givens.

So I've been a serious mess physically for a couple of days, add in the lack of sleep and the way the need to get to the appointment on short notice threw my meds schedule into chaos and basically, I'm just trying to stay up late enough that Friday will still work and doing stuff that doesn't require too much eye focus.

* Over the weekend we managed to nearly finish decorating for Phase II, and on Sunday a friend came to visit. Livia is still full of complaints about the lack of live mice in food deliveries, but there is nothing to be done.

* I've been having a particularly bad chronic pain week, made worse by the nobody will let me sleep thing. I'm getting Police union auto-dialers from at least three different zip codes and as between them they have about twenty and I can only block 25 numbers, every time I block one another one wakes me up later. I wish there were a do not call list for police unions, but... America. they called twice today. It was so bad Thursday and Friday that after call five Friday, Tavy stood on my hip and complained angrily until I hung up. There were four more calls to come in the next couple hours including two separate calls from my dentist reminding me of the same appointment, one live and one robo.

I'm also getting daily harassment from a robot claiming to be a pharmacy, which insists on calling me every morning between 9-9:30AM wanting me to get up, find pen and paper and in the short time it takes for the robot to read the number, and write down their number and call them back, you know, exactly the way scammers trying to steal your social security or credit card numbers like to do. I haven't blocked them on the grounds that I haven't heard from lung ampule people for a while and it's just possible they subcontracted out. Medicare advantage does the same thing some times, you see. They like to wake me up once or twice a day with a rambling generic robot message that doesn't properly identify themselves and what they want in the thirty seconds before I hang up. Eventually they give up and have a live person call and properly identify themselves. So I tend not to block medical type things that behave like that on the off it actually is Medicare being too lazy to properly contact me. I hoping if that's what's going on here, do that before I have to start a game of phone tag with the wildly incompetent folks at lung medicine head office. which took most of a month last time my machine died.

* I voted Saturday. Yes, it's election season again. I know people have trouble caring about off year elections, but state and local elections have a massive effect on your quality of life. My ballot had a ton of initiatives and common sense tax stuff needing affirming. Turn out matters. My ballot had a ton of local and county offices that very much mattered for issues like affordable housing and environmental measures.

Don't sleep on this election. Republicans are pushing hard most places to take over state election positions with partisan extremists who want to end democracy. They are packing school boards with people who want to censor history and thing that you need to teach "The other side of the holocaust." Who your sheriff is can make the difference between mental health and drug diversion vs. Stop and frisk.

Don't sleep on this, I beg you. People sleeping on state level elections is why so many states are getting extreme racial gerrymandering next year.

* I am worried about Tavy. He slipped past Squirrel when he came home from work a few days ago, and I didn't notice until after lung time. Late Saturday, he got diarrhea. He slept most of Sunday and was still ill. He's drinking lots of water and is behaving normally while awake, but not eating much and is low energy for him. I'm worried he ate something he shouldn't while he was lose in the pre-dawn or caught a paracite from one of the complex dogs, since a lot of the owners are too lazy to toss their feces in the receptacle.

I'll see how how is tomorrow. I definitely can't afford the vet and squirrel is skint this month. *digits cruciform*

They are escorting the Medusan ambassador to the Federation home. Humans can't talk to the Medusans face to face as sight of the Medusan driving them insane. Spock must wear a visors, though there is concern about his human half. The Medusan is traveling in a future tech cat carrier apparently with Larry and Miranda. The cat carrier opens. Spock flinches, but gazes on the entity for a while. He tells Miranda, the woman assisting the Ambassador that he envies her assignment. The Assistant tries to touch his mind. She seems to project her envy on Spock. Clue number one. Apparently he telepathy is why he studies on Vulcan. She wishes she could see the Medusan.

They have a dinner party where they discuss Vulcan telepathy and the need to block out other's thoughts. Miranda takes a badge he wore in honor of her as a taunt. Clue number 2. Bones argues that Vulcan is boring and that the Medusans must be evil because they are ugly. Spock keeps gently rebuking McCoy instead of slapping him. Spock is a better man than I. Kirk calls beauty the last prejudice, but then toasts Miranda's beauty. Bones is racist and paternalistic. Miranda rebukes him on the racism. Miranda says she senses someone thinking about murder, but can't say who. She rebuffs Bones' attempt to escort her to her room. Scotty invites the other guy that came with the Medusan to go drinking, but he too turns down the offer. Bones says she's 'disturbing' possibly because she doesn't want to fuck. *side eye*

Larry has a deep crush on Miranda and is losing his shit because she's going to live with the Medusa instead of having sex with him. He kisses her. she is not into it and tells him to leave. She now knows the murdery feelings and envy are from Larry. The Creep. He goes to murder the Medusa out of sexual jealousy, thus seeing the Medusa and going violently mad. He runs around attacking people. Miranda tells the feds about Larry.

Larry the Incel turns up at engineering. Scotty gives him the controls before the announcement of Larry's homicidal insanity comes over. He knocks out Scotty and starts driving the Enterprise dangerously fast. He sends them beyond the galaxy boundaries before they subdue him. He is raving about dreams. Only Miranda can calm him. He thinks about the Medusa, they calls her a liar and tries to kill her, but he dies instead. Everything just stopped.

So now they are lost in space. (Danger Will Robinson). It's a void. they can't recross the barrier in sub-light and the sensory distortion in warp makes navigating impossible. The only solution is a mindlink with the Medusan which Spock suspects Dr. Miranda Jones won't allow. Kirk volunteers to distract her with a date to the arboretum. *side eye* Kirk tries to talk her out of her asexuality. *side eye* She doesn't enjoy other people's violent emotions and finds the Medusans restful. Kirk keeps trying to seduce her anyway, insulting her Medusan friend. Asshole.

Miranda works out what Spock is planning and tries to take his place. he points out she doesn't know how to pilot the ship. Bones points out a blind person can't fly the ship. (He'd been keeping her blindness private because ethics, but he couldn't let her endanger the ship). Her dress contains a sensor web. Kirk works out she hides her blindness to avoid pity. She insists. Kirk says to ask the Medusan, who says no.

Spock mind melds with the Medusan and the two become one. The blend quotes Byron at Uhura and the Tempest at Miranda. They navigate back to entry point, at which point the Medusan waxes poetic about the wonder of being embodied but also the intense loneliness of it. Spock goes to put the entity back in the cat carrier, but forgets his visor. He goes berserk and Kirk has to stun him. Nimoy's performance in this scene is really beautiful, with all the switches back and forth in both personality and emotion.

Miranda is Spock's only hope, via Mind Meld. Kirk gets impatient and finds her in there without her net. Kirk thinks she should wake him with a kiss then accuses her of trying to kill Spock. She goes all the way down, risking them both. Spock recovers. Kirk gives Miranda a rose and she goes off to live with the aliens. She and Spock respect each other now.

The men (except Spock are just really gross in this one.
