* I have started hearing some things that suggest now would be a good time to remind folks that UVA and the City of Charlottesville were targeted by white supremacists because they were trying to do the right thing as far as taking down confederate monuments and taking steps to make things better and more inclusive. Charlottesville has a Democratic mayor. The businesses and people living in Charlottesville are not the enemies and many of the counter protesters live there. Boycotting Charlottesville and UVA is the opposite of standing up for decency and justice, just as boycotting and harassing Russian and Ukrainian immigrants who fled here was the exact wrong to protest Putin's anti-gay policies.

It is incredibly important that we support the victims rather than scapegoat them. I know our brains make associations that aren't entirely rational, but we can reign that shit in if we're aware of it.

* Yesterday the sky was actually mostly blue. (More blue inland, fading to gray over the bay, but much improved. There was a pall of matte grey smoke over eveything still, making the sky look painted and flat. It is better for breathing than it was, but still not great.

We went swimming anyway, and the temperature was perfect for that, the cool of the lake the perfect antidote for the muggy heat. All this was a lot of driving. I am slightly more hopeful it is belts and not breaks due to the subtleties of how it drives. My hope is to take it in Monday and talk them into checking their work. Tires and wipers are likely to be 80ish and absolutel need doing this month and i am slowly bleeding money. I'm rather scared to check, but i will have to before monday. I suspect I won't be servicing the medical debt this month which will put me further behind, but at least the lights are staying on.

- Chain of Command (parts 1 & 2 Combined). How to undermine crew morale and battle readiness. It is particularly hard watching TNG Ferengi in the current political climate. I had somehow misremembered this as being in season seven, so wasn't emotionally braced for it, Picard's torture and interrogation being strongly reminiscent of my childhood interrogations, because it was the first thing I ever saw that got that it is fundamentally about getting the victim to agree to the lie, a that is how they break us. At the same time this episode was much of the impetus for the rewatch, as a quarter of a century late it still haunts me. This time I am thinking about how this trauma interacts with his earlier violation at the hands of the Borg. I had honestly forgotten how philosophical this is. I do appreciate the ethical discussion. The mind games are always the hardest to watch for me. Picard's defiance and cleverness speaks to me on the deepest level. When this first aired, this was not a thought I was capable of having, but now I am pleased that he voluntarily went for therapy at the end.

After we went and submitted my passport paperwork. Thanks again to the folks who contributed to efforts to get trans folk passports after the election of 45, as there was no way in hell i could afford the fees myself, but my friend handed over the charity sourced money orders and I watched with dismay the birth certificate I spent 14-15 months fighting to get from PA disappear into the bowels of the Federal Bureaucracy, likely for several months. *fingers crossed on the ID project, a five year bureaucratic Odyssey, maybe ending for real this Summer*

(For those not following the ID Saga, the easy bit was changing my State ID and Social security over. Name change was expensive, but is super smooth in my state. Birth Certificate was a fucking nightmare because I was foolishly born in Pennsylvania, which has very simple legal criteria to amend a birth certificate, but it's all a lie, as the actual bureaucrats impose a whole other extremely strict and transphobic system not stated in the law or on their web site. If you are trying to amend a PA Birth certificate and want to know the specific transphobic wording you need in your documents and extra criteria, PM and I will tell you how to work the fucking system).

* Poldark: 2.1. I wrote before how Francis Poldark was the weakest link in the Poldark remake. It is easy for Francis to be contemptible and one dimensional. He is jealous, an alcoholic, a gambling addict, paternalistically sexist, and often an obstacle to the male protagonist (This last tends to bias an audience against a character). One of the things the original did incredibly well is to also make him likeable. That's why his story HURTS, you see. He is likeable, and well meaning, shares his cousin's strong sense of honor, and is painfully self aware of his own failings. He KNOWS what the right thing is to do, but so often can't manage to do it. He is forever in his cousin's shadow, a man who's legend he can't begin to live up to. It is a hard place to be and it preys on him, made worse by him marrying Ross' fiance while Ross was believed dead, thus setting himself up for comparison that way as well. His self awareness of all the ways he doesn't and never can measure up is his real tragedy, you see, and his prophecy is so often self fulfilling. His constant wondering if Elizabeth is measuring him against his cousin leads to jealous, assholish, and boorish treatment of Elizabeth, thus leading to more doubts and more acting out, etc.. This doesn't lead anywhere good. It makes it worse that Ross keeps reaching out a hand to rescue him (drowning, when he gambled away his mine, the card sharp) and genuinely behaving decently, and Demelza, being who she is risks her life and ends up paying a terrible cost to save both their lives. He knows the right thing is to be grateful, to behave well, and that just makes it worse. There is Ross with his strong marriage at a time when Elizabeth can't bear him to touch her anymore. Francis can see how he's behaving and hates himself for it.

The problem with Season One New Francis was that he got all the negative traits down pat, but couldn't bring the likeable. It meant that he was rather flat and to simplistic as a character. He couldn't live up to original Francis at all. He couldn't make me hurt for him.

This deficit is repaired in the season two premiere. The parting from Elizabeth before the assizes WORKS. The line, "Which one of us doesn't secretly adore him," was every bit as ouch as it needed to be, as was the "Had he never gone away in the first place." Ouch, ouch, ouch. I wish he'd brought this feel to first season, but better late than never, and his tragedy hung over all his scenes in this episode the way it should.

On a lighter note, it was weirdly mind bending to have original Ross Poldark judging new Poldark in the opening scene. I love that he's present and a piece of this remake, but at the same time, it's weird seeing two Ross Poldarks in one scene looking at each other. Trust me, I've scene the same actor in other things, such as playing Queen Elizabeth's last favorite in the brilliant Glenda Jackson Elizabeth R, and I know full well actors play other parts, but I watched the original two series so often that in a Poldark context, I'm always going to read that actor as Poldark on some level, if that makes sense. Watching them together my brain felt the way it does when I look at the vase/kiss illusion and see both pictures at once.

* TNG 4 Rewatch:

- The Drumhead. Picard actually notices that this is an unethical use of Betazoid powers, but his call out is countered by her pointing out his unethical use of Deanna's powers. Clearly someone in the writer's room finally noticed the creepy lack of ethics. The MacCarthyism and xenophobia here might be all to real here if November goes badly. I really like Worf's soul searching at the end.

- Half a Life. The Logan's Run Episode. There's a lot of meat on this one, prime directive, assisted suicide, etc.. It's also nice that for once Lwaxana Troi's sexuality is neither a joke nor centering around her sexually harassing people.

* I've been a low grade exhausting sort of sick for a couple of weeks. I took a bad turn in my sleep this morning and woke up suffocating, which hasn't happened in a while. Luckily, it has happened often enough that I have the procedure down. Unfortunately once I got breathing going again I had one of those brutal hour long ravage the body hour long coughing fits where every breath is another cough. I used all my mother's tricks and my own, including the one of hers I loathe on every level and the two of mine she physically couldn't have done for medical reasons. I did finally manage to restore reasonable breathing and sleep, only to be awakened half an hour later by a debt collector to hassle me about $5.22 a doctor had sold on to them instead of sending a final notice. Really? Like, really? Five dollars and change? Me: send me a bill. I don't pay people anything over the phone because, no offense, I have no proof you are who you say you are. The whole rolling over to answer the phone thing started me coughing up lung chunks again, I lost another two hours of sleep and tore something (luckily small) in my back. For five dollars. *head desk* The fever's up this evening and my lungs are rotten. I need to start the talking them into antibiotics drama again.

It is strangely freeing in a way even Glee fandom wasn't quite for me. I never got into Queer as Folk or the L Word as soaps are not my genre, but I suspect this must be what it was like for their audiences. Most mainstream shows that include us at all do one same sex paring or one male and one female pairing with occasional short term complications. Here is a show where there is often no clear romantic end game and plenty of meaty plot for the characters to tangle with on top of the romantical complications. No wonder it mesmerizes me.

* I've been seeing talk of labeling racism a mental illness. No. Mental illness is not a choice. It's an illness that can happen to anyone with no more moral component than the cold of flu. Racism is a choice. It is a choice not to educate oneself about things like history and bias. It is a choice not to challenge structures that harm people. It is certainly a choice to go out and deliberately miseducate oneself with white supremacist nonsense. Pretending that these two things are equivalent both further stigmatizes mentally ill people and it absolves the rest of us for our duty to fight this cultural poison and from the hard work of fighting our own cultural conditioning. Fuck that! People are dying of this all over this country. Now is not the time to get sidetracked by this nonsense.

Seriously, this thing where the characters conceal information supposedly to keep other characters safe, but as a result repeatedly endangering them is cliche and booooooring. Finally, I thought, Thea has the tools to be an effective member of the team, please just tell her already. only next episode, he is lying to her again and still hasn't copped to being the Arrow. So he is still lying to her about lying to her and thus endangering her when he had every reason to come clean. Gaaaaah! The boring romantical problems of rich wife people wasted so much time the first two seasons and just when I'd hopes of the show not going at a snail's pace between that and the pointless refusal of characters to communicate, they double down on the pointless secret keeping. Seriously, it was totally okay for all the archenemies to know Arrow's secret identity in season two, but not his family. Does that make any kind of sense? How did not telling his family that nice Mr. Slade was out to kill them all work out for you Ollie? Pretty fucking awful, so why not take the chance for a clean slate and go forward more sensibly? Fucking A! Does this show ever stop being pointlessly irritating?

* The South Korean MERS outbreak looks to be leveling off, with only one new infection this week. Twenty four are dead, 166 infected. There is one infection in Thailand. This is a disease that's been on my watch list for some time. It's airborne, which is always dangerous, but not that infectious unless you are spending a lot of time in an enclosed environment, like say a car, or a doctor's waiting room, or a bed/hospital room. The small cluster in the UK was a car trip and a hospital room, if I remember correctly. Most of the South Korean cases were caught in Doctor's offices by people in close contact with a sick person. The main vector is infected camels, which is why it is serious as fuck in the Middle east, but why we've managed for a few years with only this one serious outbreak. It is pretty deadly if you catch it, but we are lucky, this isn't even close to cold and/or flu infectious. I am watching the South Korean outbreak carefully. I am hoping that this really is it, and people haven't carried it out of country. I am very sorry for the families of the dead and for the infected. I am taking it seriously, but you don't see me panicking, even though if there were a serious outbreak in my region, odds are, I'd be infected and likely dead of it. This is because while I do live near Seattle, with it major international airport, I think there are decent odds of there not being a serious outbreak here, absent a mutation that ups the infectiousness. So yes, take reasonable precautions, like you should be doing anyway. Hand washing tends to cut down on things like colds and flu as well. If you are sick, try to stay home and wear a mask when you must go out to see a Doctor, which is just common courtesy. If you have been traveling in an infected area and/or drinking milk from sick camels, definitely see a doctor if you are having respiratory symptoms. Otherwise? Odds are you in no more danger from MERS than you were a year ago unless you have started traveling to infected areas in the last month.

* This is very necessary. Some of you have seen me referring to having to "pioneer a new Doctor." This is that thing trans people have to do, where you go to a new Doctor and get to find out the not not fun way if they are transphobes. Even if they are not shitty human beings, generally we, the patients, are required to educate the Doctor on both Trans 101 stuff and trans specific medical issues. No really. (This goes like quadruple for the mental health provider community, BTW.) Trans patients, regardless of what issue we are going to the doctor for including when we are deathly ill are expected to explain politely about pronouns and dosages. It is often the case that the Doctor knows nothing about trans bodies and has to look up whatever medical situation you happen to be having, which is not particularly helpful the day your blood turns scary viscous or you collapse from an infection or the month (in the case of someone I knew personally) they didn't bother checking if the person was MTF or FTM and reversed all the medications. Even Doctors of good will who do the research when trans patients start turning up are basically teaching themselves a whole branch of medicine. (Doctors of good will will generally get a flood of new trans patients after they treat the first one well, because as a group we have a pretty kick ass word of mouth system because we have to for literal survival reasons. It is super important to know: so and so is excellent with trans women, but discriminates against trans men, so and so is an asshole but will give you your meds only you need to know your numbers and doses because the Doctor will routinely mis-prescribe unless you watch like a hawk, so and so only does meds, so-and-so is full service and treats us like people. People can be seriously hurt or even killed by not knowing this stuff about which Doctors are safe and for what.) Keep in mind that these are medical services people are having to pay for. Psychiatrists think nothing of making patients pay them for the patient educating them on trans issues. Hospitals consider it appropriate and ethical to mock trans patients and let them bleed to death on their doorstep because we aren't really people and so there is no need to provide life saving medical care after car accidents and hate crimes. This is the reality of trans health care in this country and if you don't think that is fucked up you are part of the problem.

(I am still sick, but I am reasonably functional if i don't overstretch and likely not a danger to healthy people). Today I had to mail the late payer and get goosh for Hector. I added in a library run, as it's near the Post Office. By the time I did those things, fed cats and fish, and made collards I was too tired for much else. Somehow between the early evening watering and sunset, the first lily bloomed. They are late this year as their stems are really long. The first lily was a solo bloom in the maroon that is not quite black. Another looks very close, but is on a multiple head stem. I will check tomorrow.

Both of those are bad decisions.

* I watched the SyFy movie "The Dead." It was very nearly good. No really. It came achingly close. In fact, large stretches of it were actually good. The two main characters could actually act, even though the supporting cast were occasionally embarrassingly bad. Given that so much of the movie was the main dudes traveling, periodically dealing with perils, punctuated by short bursts of dialog, it was the acting of the leads that mattered. Whoever made it correctly identified that Romero's slow, silent zombies creeping inexorably up on people not looking in the right direction was unnerving and used that to good effect. Unfortunately, someone else decided to fuck it up, but randomly making certain zombies hiss or growl like lions, which was not nearly as effective as the silent sequences. Similarly, there were all these extremely effective ambient sound sequences, with the eloquent sounds of (presumably foleyed) insects, the hum of the motor, small grunts and metallic sounds and the like, but randomly, someone would fuck that up by deciding some particularly sequence desperately needed a cliched incidental music track under it, even though the near silence would have been so much better and more compelling. They also decided to make the American the main character, even though the Sierra Leonian had a more compelling back story and arc, as well as the better actor, and the movie took place in and was about Africa. He also gives a terse monolog about the way the west is only interested in Africa when it wants something and then the whites flee at the first sign of trouble. Seriously, why wasn't this guy the lead? I know, I know, racism. The point is, that they had stuff like the Soldier's speech and a whole lot of subtext, and somebody clearly knew what they were doing with the silent creepiness and the ambient sound and the way it was shot. It was so close to art movie/indie film good, but clearly someone at the network needed to squirt enough Syfy on it to prevent it making it to legitimately good.

* I've been rewatching Dark Angel, which despite cheesy wirework and the obviously wrong timeline, holds up pretty well. I'm pretending it is an alternate history in which all advanced tech was blown up by the EMP pulse in 2009, pushing us back to pagers, 3.5 disks, big phones and the like. It's not that big a stretch. So many of the themes are very timely, the police state, the ubiquitous surveillance, the massive gap between the rich and poor with little in between, the subversion of the media, the corruption and violence of the system, etc.. There is a sequence where the police stop her for no reason and break her tail light so they can impound her vehicle and try to make her spend several month's rent for her whole floor of apartments getting it back. Seriously, ripped from the headlines to my sorrow.

I was not best pleased by their trans episode and Original Cyndi's transphobia in particular. I was not best pleased by them playing with the trap meme, given how many women are murdered over "trans panic." I did think it was interesting that Normal's lack of transphobia is the first thing that humanizes him as a character. I just wish they'd at least had one of Max's friends call Cyndi out on her assholery instead of Herbal and Sketchy siding with her. It could have been so much worse though, as they were setting it up for the "joke" to be the reveal and the humiliation of normal for being attracted to her, then didn't follow through.

The thing I've been thinking about most though, is that "Dark Angel" is what "Batman" would be like, if instead of Batman being a sick fuck who got off on beating up poor people, he instead teamed up with Cat Woman and tried to tackle bigger problems like corrupt officials, child trafficking, defrauding veterans out of the health care to which they are entitled, and the police state in general. They even have the equivalent of Jim Gordon in the form of a ridiculously sexy Korean American cop. While Max clearly is framed for the straight male gaze, trust me Logan, Det. Matt Sung, and sometimes Herbal are clearly set up to please a different gaze entirely. Max lives in a diverse Seattle peopled by people from all sorts of backgrounds. Her best friend is a lesbian of colour. She has multiple friends and some of the episodes pass the Betchdal test. Max may be singular, but she's not the only competent and tough woman she knows. The show addresses class directly, but is less direct in the way it talks about race and classicism. Max and Original Cyndi are the only PoC at the wedding that aren't servants, and I think that was deliberate. The damsel in distress is generally the slacker male coworker instead of the women, and when Max needs helps, she still does most of the saving herself. They have disabled characters, though one of them gets better if I remember correctly. The one with ALS doesn't, also if I remember carefully. It's not perfect. (I am so not a fan of giving us a hero in a wheelchair, then partially taking him away again). Still, pretty good for a 14 year old show.

If you haven't seen the Whoopi Goldberg tribute to Moms Mabley, go watch it. She was amazing. (Seriously, a lesbian woman of color who was extremely funny and got away with working extremely blue at a time when all of that was illegal.) I never much liked insult comedy as a genre whether Joan Rivers or Don Rickles or Lisa Lampenelli. It's unpleasant and Joan River's act was nasty, homophobic, racist, misogynistic, and virulently transphobic in an incredibly ugly way on stage and in private. Fuck her! I do not approve of people attacking her for the choices she made with her body. It's her body, and those surgeries were her choice. I feel that her love of hate speech and dehumanizing treatment of other women cis and most particularly trans ones is and always has been fair game. She piled racism on top of her transmisogyny and doubled down on that when she was called on it. I find all this soft focus nostalgia disgusting. I will not dance on her grave, but I'm not sorry she's no longer out spewing her particular brand of hate anymore.

* The number of people arrested in the South Korean Ferry disaster is now seven. The charges against the captain are enough for their to be a potential for life in prison. Good. It looks very like a combination of laziness, incompetence, and cowardice killed a whole lot of innocent people. Meanwhile, divers keep pulling dead teenagers wearing life vests out of the wreck. It's heartbreaking and all my sympathies are with the families of the dead and the survivors of the disaster.

* For the record, I don't think Captains should be required to "go down with the ship," but I do think it is the responsibility of the Captain and crew to properly oversee the evacuation. A Captain in such a hurry to flee that he doesn't order passenger evacuation or give the crew proper orders for said evacuation, the resulting chaos leading to massive loss of life is pretty much the definition of what should never happen. Captain and crew should be on the last boat out, after the passengers are safely off, never on the first life boat out.

Round about '93 or '94 (Anybody remember what year I dated Devon? It was that year, whichever it was), I dragged myself through Witching hour that purgatorial spring break I spent at Devon's. There were some interesting things in it early on. I hated it so much I flung it across the room at least twice. It was rapey and unpleasant.
