I keep thinking about how for the Bicentennial they put all this effort into doing maintenance on historical sites and improving exhibits instead of censoring, damaging, and destroying them as Republicans are doing now.

The Bicentennial was fun. Was America perfect then? Far from it, but there was a real celebration of Freedom and focus on the complex history instead of a concerted effort to kill democracy on the part of one political party.

I am furious that Republicans are using this as one more way to attack the things that are good about this country like Democracy and diversity and social progress.

I literally can't live on just over $500 a month. Hardly anyone can. That's what they are planning to do though. Cut SSI payments nearly in half.

The reason the funding is drying up is because of tax cuts for the rich, like the Bush Era ones that capped contributions for the wealthy so they only have to pay a fraction of their income everyone else pays.

A really easy start to fixing this would be to repeal all the tax cuts for the rich done in my lifetime starting with the ones under George W. Bush.

* Kitten news! Livia's old rescue called and we are getting kittens from them instead. Due to scheduling issues, not Saturday next. They will be girls from the January litter. One will be black. The other will either be tuxedo or black with subtle tabby markings. There are only four of the seven left as of last Friday. The plan is, I sit on the floor and let the kittens pick me.

UPDATE: Wheelchair practice is exhausting for everyone involved, but we made some progress.

* It has been a really rough week physically with Too Many Things in it. Also too much pollen. Way too much pollen.

When I went on my TP run to ethical grocery, I saw Plant bukake floating around over the highway, which added to my car being covered in it, and me coming home with my shirt visibly dusted on and off for weeks gives you an idea of what I am dealing with.

We've been using the Livingroom window bench for wheelchair practice, which prevents installing the air-conditioning/air filtration.

By the time I went north for the optometrist there were some plant bukake balls as big as my thumb above the knuckle. It's in the parking lot on little clusters and scattered on the entry rug in the lobby, but we aren't at drift stage yet.

I had forgotten to budget for glasses. Fuckssake. I am committed on the kittens, which we go to get Saturday, as in the money is a fixed amount and I have moved it onto a card they accept, along with a little extra in case we need gas to get back home. I am really hoping I have enough to cover end of the month auto-withdraw, but I can't be sure.

Wheelchair practice keeps getting postponed. It was meant to be Wednesday, then Thursday, but the air quality is just so bad we are all exhausted. every little thing I do I need to lie down after.

When I came out of my room with it's strong filtration, I really struggled to breath. There was nothing for it but to move the wheelchair into the kitchen and manhandle the air conditioner into place. In less than an hour of starting it up I felt so much better. I'm still congested, but the cough is down to just a little worse than normal. I feel terrible for Livia, who's window box had to be moved left and who's window is now closed. As I typed this she came out and saw to her distress. So unfair.

* Firefox did another update where it wiped everything. I had so much laid out and organized to go, but too many things were happening Thursday night so I shut down planning to do all the posting Friday.

It's gone. I just can't put it all back. I do not have a couple days for recovery and reorganization, not as my health is now. I am already drowning in too many things and I still have some kitten prep and to somehow squeeze in some sleep.

It wasn't just Firefox either. At least Waterfox fixed their shit so I'm not going to have to reconstruct there too. (Do the real work on Water and Fire, but I keep a couple other browsers around because some things are easier if I can just flip back and forth. I just checked and the podcast browser is okay. These are the three that matter most).

I'm going to see what I can do about saving the last couple weeks of work, but please, please don't rely on me for anything right now.

* Monday: the kittens are a delight but they are athletic on the Hector "Are you sure you don't have wings scale" and are likely going to be Livia big when the grow up as they are already nearly Tavy sized. I will be sitting at my desk and a kitten will fly over my shoulder. Lat night, I looked up just in time to catch one of them leaping about three feet in the are on a very narrow parabola, tail flying like a flag. I heard the landing thump right as the other dig the exact same thing. They literally bounce off furniture.

Clawdia makes waaaay more messes and is voted most likely to end up in a toilet, fish tank, or dryer and is a pain in the ass when she escapes anything. Sappho is quiet and clever and very patient. She is voted most likely to get past the legs without you knowing and her capacity for large scale mess making stunned me today. Like, she doesn't knock small things over all the time or make mistakes near the litter box, but goes for it she really goes for it. It took more than half an hour to sort out the mess in the kitchen. I'm pretty sure the blender will be all right, but another of my great grandmother's plates was broken in half, and the rack with the extracts and food colouring was ripped from the wall, destroying the fasteners and scattering everything everywhere. I will need to buy more fasteners when there is money again.

They really, really want to befriend Livia, particularly Saffy. Livia is enforcing a three foot rule for their approach, but will come within a foot if they are in sleepy mode. I managed to give her a really long bed pet last night with them turning up halfway through. She was up at the head center, and they spread out along the closet side. She's going about it exactly the way Livia seduced Little Miss back in the day. I will sit still just outside growling distance, and respectfully hang out making the occasional blinky eyes. Next time, she sits just slightly closer. She got as close as two feet last night by slow increments, but once she triggered growls, Livia insisted she move back to the cordon line.

Clawdia is temperamentally closer to Tavy, so will likely take longer, but I know Livia misses having cats around and when they are sleeping in view or hanging out quietly, it's fine.

Adjustment takes time and they are making daily progress with it, which is Fast on a cat scale.

* Tuesday: Livia, grumbling: It is very hard to get angry at this kitten when she is just sitting peaceably a foot away and I am getting head scritches. It is infuriating!

It was fine, even when Clawdia came and sat behind Sappho, completely ignoring the pre-established three foot Clawdia cordon. What was not fine was when Saffy in a moment of over ambitious enthusiasm prepared to leap the small gap to Livia's personal bedroom window podium, which her human made just for her and which even Tavy wasn't allowed to sit on, the one on which she was at that very moment getting a belly rub. It was a bridge too far!

* Wednesday: Nose touch today before Livia hissed at Saffy. Saffy decided to take her afternoon nap in there, sprawled out about two feet from Livia, who curled up for hers on her podium.

Livia has resumed pettin throne Pets, another sign she is relaxing around the kittens.

Clawdia's intestinal distress seems to have resolved, and it turns out she likes burrowing under the blankets with me.

I have no idea what was going on in the vicinity of my legs around the time the Black Death was crossing into Savoy, but ist was clearly very exciting.

Today we did feather time with Tavy's feather and bat toy he got as a gift from friends about a month and a half before he died. (This was is personal special toy. ) It is perfect for two kittens who play well together as the bat and the little boa move differently and if one of them grabs one to rassle, I can wiggle the other part for the other kitten. I ended up with two toys in play, but it was really helpful when I needed a hand for something else. Saffy eventually grabbed the bat toy and ran off with it.

Later when I went to return library stuff, I found someone had found were I hid Livia's personal favorite toy and dragged it to the kitchen door. I have hidden it somewhere else. (Livia will play with a few things, but most things she won't and it's little fragile and her favorite, so it is her personal special toy. Eventually the kittens will each have one special toy just for them, but right now they are having a wonderful time trying all the toys).

My bank stopped posting updates for the holiday end of Thursday and only just updated everything today. I was super close on the glasses and it is possible I miscalculated by 20-25 dollars as I wasn't sure what was and wasn't still in processing limbo. If the glasses check was cashed and cleared by the optometrist before the weekend, I am fine. If not, it's possible I'm fucked. I had a surprise autodraw for my anti-virus, which would be the thing putting me over. (Kitten funds had been moved to a credit card earlier in the week.)

IDK. I am hoping they either cashed it, or are super slow cashers like my car mechanic and they only deposit checks twice a month. There is nothing to be done about it now. Sigh.

If I'd realized it was coming I would have cancelled it.

In any case they cats are doing really well, and everyone is adjusting pretty fast by cat standards. They are starting to form routines.

* Thursday: every time I tried to make toast, alarms, which has been an issue all Winter. I did everything right the second time: cleaned toaster, turned the hood fan and the big fans on. There is nothing for it, but for me to only make toast outdoors. We also have had a persistent problem with opening the oven setting off alarms at the higher temperatures the whole time we've lived here, but the toast thing is likely to do with the fire system upgrades last year. Sigh.

I have a power strip I run through the air conditioner cardboard insulation gap, which I use for Halloween lights and such. I turned the power back onto it and made toast for the last of yesterday's soup on the blue garden chair I had out there, plus extra toast to eat with preserves by way of dessert. It's a bit of a problem as I have to leave the door ajar and hope I can here the pop over the TV, as we are having another arctic blast, so toast will get cold very quickly if I don't dart out and rescue it immediately, and I do not like how this will go in Winter, but for now, it's just extra steps between me and emergency food. (I can't leave the toaster out there, so I need to carry it out and plug it in, then bring it inside once it cools off). Why must everything be this hard?

New Millennial came over for the evening to do skills practice as part of the get New Millennial to be allowed to work again campaign. Squirrel is showing them tricks and I am the practice dummy. They will be back Wednesday, and which point we need to get the wheelchair out of my car and figure out where to practice. My bed is too high and Squirrel's too low. I am thinking we clear Livia's stuff and related gear off the window bench and use that for a bed. It will be a Production, but I think it will be all right.

They know how to Do the Things, but they need to do them quickly and smoothly according to their very picky rules, not all of which make real world sense, and both of these skills are ones requiring extra equipment and a partner. Practice went really well tonight. Squirrel gave them professional advise and I gave them test taking advise to avoid test anxiety and test paralysis, because really, that's a hurdle for a lot of people.

If anyone knows how to fly through high stakes testing with excellent marks, it is me.

* As I read this really excellent book on yersina pestis, I keep catching my brain attempting to choreograph a ballet around the second Pandemic. I wish the ballet existed for me to actually watch, but I suspect I am the only one who would love this thing.

There is this whole thing with rat dancers enacting the epizootic phase with them mostly collapsing in a heap towards the end. Now picture two men dancing a pas de deux sword fight. Then a sick rat dances out of the seething mass of rat dancers all artistically dying. She pulls the Gold horde dancer away and they to an infection pas de deux. The rat dancer spins into the arms of the Genoese Soldier, and the Golden horde guy pulls the velcro on his costume and it flips down to show the buboes and blotches on the body suit underneath. The rat dancer collapses at the end of the second pas de deaux and gracefully dies, to be carried off stage by more rat dancers.

You get the idea. * Wednesday I did the library run and they did have cat grass at the cheap grocery this time as I discovered on the way back. Livia's eaten the batch I grew her down to the nubbins and the new crop isn't up yet. She had the blerps twice while I was gone, poor thing.

I got back in time to do lungs before the "webinar" about new state laws in effect this year and next for HoAs. Management lady: "We hate this law." Me, rubbing my hands gleefully: I bet you do. It requires you to give proper notice, tell people living here what you are planning to do and it requires votes on anything not an extreme emergency. You know like the fucking gate we don't need and don't want that I told them wouldn't work, but they wasted the emergency funds on that should have gone to dealing with indoor waterfall damage and getting us up to fire code.

Pretty much all the abuses last year are now illegal. They kept complaining about how time consuming and onerous it was to let us vote on things effecting our lives. Fuck those people.

Next Tuesday I need to get my shit together to fight to save window plants and lights. I hate these people so much. so much.

I also suggest looking at things like volunteer work and endorsements, because it really, really helps with things like sheriff and judicial elections, but can be useful in all sorts of primaries when you have multiple good options.

I keep thinking about how excited my dad would have been about Artemis. He cared so much about NASA, about space exploration, about science.

Over the decades I has often pictured my parents, my mom pregnant with me holding hands and eating her homemade caramel corn, watching the moon landing together. I like to think of them that way, young and still at the start of everything, and so very alive, all their worries put aside for something hopeful and amazing they'd spent most of their lives hoping would happen.

I also keep thinking about how exciting it was when Sally Ride came to school as a kid, how I'd grown up with science fiction and how the space program was so full of hope. She was amazing, and I was glad I got to meet her briefly after her talk. She was just so inspiring and so human. Even though her speech taught me that I'd never go to space, it made me so glad people like her were doing it.

I want people cooperating to do science.

I want governments cooperating to do great and important things.

I want people looking up and having a moment of wonder about what humans can achieve with skill and knowledge and cooperation, because that feels like hope.

* Very early Sunday morning, I snuck over to Nearby grocery, which is over-priced, but has a number of things that are hard to get anywhere else and also is one of the few places I can use the secondary food card, the one I must use every month as it won't roll over and which as weird restrictions on what can and can't be bought, so you have to guess what is covered and there are occational terrible surprises at check out.

I had planned to wait until later in the month, but I had a 10% on all groceries off coupon and I could think of aproximately the benefit amount's worth of groceries that I needed, plus I really wanted their bagels, which are not covered as the government conciders bagels "unhealthy" foods, unlike bread and burger buns, which are covered. Did I meantion how nonsensical the "healthy" vs. "Unhealthy designation is? I was not sure how the benefit card and the coupon would interact, as I could see that when and how they applied the coupon would effect whether or not the benefit card would have left overs on it and I having to make the difference up in cash. This benefit card can't be used with EBT and there are weird rules about how it counts things generally.

Now was a good time to do it, as this is the most I am ever likely to ever spend at once at Nearby Grocery during the coupon period, and I had my Emergancy Twenty on me, which meant I could gamble by picking up bagels and a couple other things I know the card doesn't cover. (Go ahead and judge me, but sometimes I can get half price high end ice cream there, for example, if I keep an eye out. There's a list of these things I check when I'm in there. Brand name cereal is super expensive, so I always check the cereal aisle for surprise half price sales).

We like to shop there either very late or very early and between 6 and 7AM is one of the sweet spots. No lines, no crowds, no one's bought all the good bagels yet. <.< >.> Look, I can't get bagels like hoome here, but the cheese ones make really good sandwiches, okay? And this is the store in town with the best selection of philly brand cream cheese flavours. I have very few pleasures left to me in life, I must savour the ones I still have.

So I zip around with my cart. Alas the startlingly extreme sale on the good yoghurt ewas over, but I'd expected that. I collected my benefit's worth, plus about fifteen extra in non-covered stuff. I even remembered to pick up coriander. I hobbled to the check out.

They clearly applied the discount at the end, because the card took it's full amount ant I ended up scraping a dollar and change out of the coin pouch. Score! It could not have gone better, really.

So I had my bagel sandwiches and I will have some tomnight as well. I have a nice store of good cream cheese flavours I didn't have to pay for. I got literally everything I'd hoped to get with the emergancy twenty intact.

So many defeats and horrible happenings in the world, so I take my victories where I can.

I still haven't touched my bureaucracy and I know more bureaucracy will be on it's way shortly, but I keep waking up with the shakes, and everything takes ages. For now fridge full and litter boxes clean will have to do.

The great Waterfox untangling took about three hours spread over two days, which again well beats out Forefoxe crashes which are in the 10-20 hour range depending on when they catch me. I am glad to have waterfox sorted finally as it was making me crazy trying to work with it like that. So let's call this another small victory.

* I went to bed early Sunday, as I was exhausted and I knew it was even odds of fire inspection. I actually had time to read about rat behavior for a while while petting Livia in the morning. I was just contemplating doing my daily physio when the fire alarm went off. Livia scrambled off for the secure hide and I started pulling on clothes. Squirrel went out to check and they were starting at the far end of our floor, which meant there was time to reconfigure bedding and cover the bed. The alarm here is louder than anywhere I've ever lived and extremely hard on the nervous system. I don't do well with the fast flashing lights either, but better to overload my sensory system than a deaf person die in a fire, so I'm not angry about that.

By the time I poked my head out into the hall, I could hear them just on the other side of the fire door, so I waited, rather than risk them moving past us with a too soft knock. Usually, the HoA come to snoop during inspection, but it started so early, I think they hadn't gotten their shit together, so the fire inspectors were in and out pretty fast.

I did my physio and then went on by library run. Livia was still in hiding when I got back, so I ate and did lungs. I'd settled in at the computer before she came out for her loves. I ended up going out again later to see a friend. In the shirt time I was open, my shirt gathered an alarming amount of visible pollen. O.o

I ended up having to go out again Tuesday, as I am nearly out of algae wafers. The local indie pet store is really mostly for cats and dogs, but they do carry the mini wafers. Given the size of my plecoes I prefer large, but the world doesn't end if they have to deal with multiple mini wafers instead of half a big one and it's a lot less gas. There was a check for me, from a kind benefactor that will catch up the bills I fell behind on because taxes, so I changed my itinerary to hit downtown first.

Stopped at the light that takes me out of my neighborhood and on to the big feeder road, my book on CD ended, which is perfect. It was overdue, but it had one more CD to finish, so I didn't return it the day before as I should have. I added the library to the list.

I am exhausted. This is too much walking for me really, but it is productive. Big bill is paid, and I can pay second biggest bill tomorrow. Progress.

* Wednesday morning's insurance scammer harassment involved two calls in less than half an hour. I couldn't get back to sleep, so I gave up and read about yersina pestis evolution and ancient world plagues until it was time for a short visit from Techie Millennial. Then I did my physio. After lunch I dragged myself out into the garden to try to scoot heavy things around. I did manage the most important part of the garden rearrangement. Just. I am concerned about the next part, because I am going to have to lift heavy things. Luckily not far or even high, but if my body gives out midway, I'm kind of fucked. I weeded a bit while I was out there and I do think this arrangement is going to take better advantage of the bush that was my nemesis for over a decade being gone.

This was most of the Wednesday spoons, so I had to put of fish and cat maintenance and bureaucracy yet again. Maybe tomorrow if it is also not raining. (It rained a lot Tuesday). Mostly I don't mind getting wet, but If I'm going to be crawling around and sitting on the dirt in front of the patio, I would rather it not be in the the rain. Soaked in mud is not as bad as sticky, but it's rough with my sensory issues and it's been colder since the Tuesday rains and my body is bad at temperature regulation at the best of times. Add cold mud and physical strain that will definitely hurt my shoulder and… yeah. So best it not be rain.

I waited several weeks hoping for help, but no dice, and the longer I wait, the more plants get injured in the reshuffle.

Livia's mood seems to be improving now spring is here, which is a relief.

* Six Insurance scammer phone calls today, plus a real one I needed to answer about medications. The your medicare has been flagged and you could lose your benefits one is back this week. I thought I'd blocked them all but Monday they called once and each day since until Thursday when they called twice. Fuckers got all new numbers, I bet. The dementia trickers are down to one a day, so I'm hoping I'm blocked most of there's. There is now one that has a slightly different script and organization name, like this scam is being plagiarized off the other Dementia trickers, but they are changing things slightly to avoid getting caught. They call once a day starting late last week. And I still haven't eradicated the death benefit assholes, even though they no longer call every day. I think they may have changed their numbers too, as they were silent for a week. Sigh.

All but the original dementia trap people and the real meds call were clustered tight together, so I'd start to drift off and the phone would ring again. I gave up and read 1st Pandemic Plague statistics until it was time to do physio and start changing my pillow cases. I got half way through before I needed a long nap. One of the big support pillows isn't really anymore despite the extra foam. I have given in and dragged a lumpy half dead pillow out of the hall closet where I banished it during the Great Contractor disaster last summer. I have combined them, which at least means I could add some extra foam to the other big support pillow. No clue If the Frankenpillow will work as it looks a little high for proper hip support, but we'll see.

I did just manage to do the rest of the garden rearranging, discovering three more problems out there in the process. Sigh. This took most of the spoons, but I did manage litter after lungs and food.

I really need to do all this bureaucracy, but I am wrung out and exhausted.

* It has been a nightmare week physically. I did manage physio Saturday and Sunday, but we ended up having to go shopping in the middle of the night Sunday as it was the only time worked for me and squirrel both. It was stocking time, and according to the guys I chatted with it was extra bad as they'd been having delays and shortages and then lots of the things turned up all at once. I couldn't use the electric cart as there was no point since it wouldn't fit down the aisles.

I haven't gotten up to ethical grocery much as it stresses out my car, the other ride option needs a light replaced and can't afford a ticket. There were a lot of things I needed that I'd used up the last few months to it was all a lot. Too much walking with every step and agony as the energy drained from my body. That sort of thing. Ethical grocery isn't Costco big, but it above average for a grocery store, and I kept having to let go of the cart to hobble through gaps to get things. I needed a lung treatment and I couldn't get enough air.

We made it home and got our separate perishables away. I basically sat on the dolly so I could sort on the kitchen floor to minimize stand time and so I could deliver things in bags to the right area quickly. They I went and lunged with my feet propped and had a nap after. A bunch of cabinet shelf stables are still in their bags, but the rest is properly stowed.

I had a good idea how bad the next few days would be so I made sure that I had things I could make quickly and/or easily. I had the forage field roast already defrosting, but I would need gravy, and the one type that they sell safe for me takes extra prep. I got other things though. This meant I could have soup and toast later and had things I could throw together in minutes for Monday.

Monday I was meant to do four items of phone bureaucracy, but a fifth urgent item emerged while I was looking for a paper I needed for a different call. I ended up doing the three most urgent before I had to got out for more incredibly painful hobbling. I knew this would be too much. I was on borrowed spoons, but library had to be Monday and the other things I could arrange to minimize extra gas expenditure. Also they were sort.

I had just enough left after housing tax and the bill I didn't pay last month for car tax to pick up something the car needed. I went to the indie parts store where you can go up to the counter and they will look up the part and go get it. I sorted it right there in disabled parking in case it was the wrong size. It was perfect.

Then to the library as three people were waiting on a book to return and I had two more ILLs. I had hoped for more time, but ah well. (One I need for some very specific research things, so I'm doing that quick as I can. I don't need the whole book, just sections of it. The other, I also need for research, in part to see if it's actually any good. I will either read a little bit and send it back or read all of it). Meanwhile the updated yersina pestis book is proving really good. I'd read the much smaller original when it first came out. I've read some of the articles the authors incorporated, but I haven't had much time since 2016 and also the context matters. The way it all fits together matters. And I really, really want to read the Ann Carson Bakkai this month, but I am slow with poetry, so I'm doing a little bit at a time. The opening poem is stunning. See really gets it. The approach in the early parts of the play is new, but makes sense and is beautiful.

The rest between shopping and this bought me a little time, but I was on borrowed spoons. I still needed gravy and tomatoes. It was Rough, so Rough.

The phone keeps waking me. It is mostly assorted insurance scammers. they are immune to do not call and do not listen. I forget how many I blocked Monday. Five of the six calls woke me Tuesday were the same insurance scam with two different people calling: Rude lady and a new player: man with distinctive accent. I keep blocking them. The sixth call was an absolutely essential call about caregiver stuff, which involves more phone bureaucracy, but I'm saving that for another day.

Can I prove that the daily insurance company autodialer barrage is caused by DOGE Bros selling my medicare and SSI and other personal information to insurance companies as a side job for personal enrichment? No. I just know that at least one of them is reported to have sold all the information he illegally data mined to a private company and the timing is right.

I was down to like one or two a month at most under Biden. Sometimes months would go by and I'd have to look up the number block code I hadn't used it in so long. The Tuesday barrage was half hour intervals, the bastards.

I am so angry about this. I bet none of them go to jail. My private information and everyone else on medicare's is out there likely being sold and resold for the pleasure of Trump and Musk and Big Balls and their ilk because more money for the rich matters more than the safety and privacy and sleep of ordinary people.

I had planned to do the stupid housing zoom meeting to fight for my window plants at least, but I just could not do it after two days of the shakes and so little uninterrupted sleep.

* I will now and then prearrange a call for that time, but I hadn't. Normally a call at that time means someone is dead or someone needs a ride to the hospital.

Her: "Hi. Are you there?" Me, already suspecting, but playing along: "It's 5:55AM. Does someone need to go to the hospital?" Her: It's Michelle. Do you remember I called you yesterday about…"

It was one of the fucking Insurance companies trying to trick me into fucking up my medicare. She talked over me, including another complaint about the time and my do not call notice. She calls me once or twice a day with the same opening line. It's a local number, which means she's calling me at 5:55AM on purpose, not an East Coast autodialer that doesn't care about time zones.

Yes, I keep fucking blocking them.
