It is actually cold here and even snowed a little. O.o

The simpler of the shirts my Aunt bought me arrived and it is much nicer than I expected. The texture is lovely, like the hurts I used to get from International Male in the '90's. I bought it two sizes up on the grounds that I wanted lots of extra fabric for comfort post surgery and zero drama getting it on and off, since I have enough trouble with button down shirts without one arm immobilized. It is gloriously tentlike, and I am now wondering if I can can just drape it over the arm and sling and only stick the other arm through an arm hole. I have options!

I ordered the fancier shirt two sizes up on the same principal. I like too large. Too large is so much easier with my sensory and mobility issues. I am actually excited for it.

* Saturday was incredibly challenging for us. The cats and I were having a nice sleep in my bed when we were jarred awake by the skull splitting alarm. It's hard enough on the rest of us, but Livia is super sensitive by cat standards. She hid of course, and there is no chance of us ever evacuating her in a fast emergency as it would be a three person job. This worries me, but it's a problem without a solution.

I could barely walk and it's bad cold outside. It took ages for me to dress and hobble out to the bench by the curb. (I certainly wasn't going out there naked, and it's too cold for me not to need to bundle up. I learned a long time ago you always grab the keys and go bag just in case). I could tell from the fact that it was still going while I struggled to get the shoes on that it was real, but also the fire engines didn't have the siren on. There was no smoke smell, and it was the non-fire emergency light that flashes for the deaf, so I guessed water emergency. Except when it's a false alarm or test, it's always been a water emergency. They want us to walk through the corridors and gather in the parking lot in the way of the fire engines in emergencies. This has always struck me as madness, so I hobbled out the back door. The gimp to the curb took ages and was incredibly painful. I said fuck this to going all the way around to gather with the others and grabbed the bench.

From there I watched the denizens of the other buildings walk dogs, etc. and glance occasionally at my ringing building. I saw a lot of dog owners sensibly evacuate their dogs into their cars with blankets, which made sense. Seriously, the blizzard missed us, but I think this is the coldest it's ever been where I lived since I moved west in the early '90's. We are talking unsheltered people freezing to death weather. This kind of thing is extra dangerous here because we barely even get snow normally in our weird little micro-climate, so a lot of unhoused people from nearby areas migrate here for cold weather precisely because it's safer than the plains or the mountains because, while it gets chilly it generally doesn't freeze much. (We fucking need housing first in this town with full social support services, because there's no excuse for people being forced to sleep rough when the area is this well off). We are talking when I took Goth Millennial home later, my fingers went numb in fifteen minutes with the car heater on cold. It wasn't quite that bad with the sun out, but it was close. I watched firefighters go in and out. I saw squirrel chatting with the firefighters, but they didn't see me. I read for a bit. The bench was a really good idea. I couldn't have stood that long and the wheelchair would have taken ages to get out given how bad my shoulder and hip joints were functioning. We got the all clear and I hobbled back in.

I decided to try to sleep clothed just in case. Tavy and I were settled back in bed, when squirrel popped in to tell me it was yet another water emergency involving an indoor waterfall, this time involving building pipes rather than a bad water heater or maintenance error (Previous causes of indoor/outdoor waterfall. There was a really impressive one from a forth floor balcony once when the guys replacing the roof had an ooopsie). As I wrote this, he came out to tell me that my suspicion it was frozen pipes was correct. Get this, they hadn't insulated the main building pipes for the forth floor so they burst. Duh. There is a reason they won a massive lawsuit against the guy that built this place. Indoor waterfall through four floors of maintenance area and out the front door to freeze in the parking lot. O.o. I think there is water in the wall between my bathroom and the hall. There is water in the carpet approximately where my washer and dryer are. I can't see water, but I can smell wet plaster in there. I have Concerns.

One of the other buildings had the same thing happen last week. I hope they quick wrap the pipes in the third building.

Livia had just emerged from the secure hide for her reassurance pet and was about a minute in when the alarm went off again. Cats panicked. I figured it was the inevitable multiple retriggering sequence after a water emergency. They shut off all the building alarms for the duration after the second retrigger. I didn't see Livia again until about 8. (I have furnished her favorite hide with a multilevel sleep complex and toys in the lower level. She's fine in there. Sometimes she sleeps in there for fun.

Fucking Low Bid contractors.

Update: Apparently the upper floors had to lose their electrical for safety reasons overnight, and the elevator shaft filled up with water which needs pumping out. Remediation is going to be expensive and time consuming.

I am horrified all those people are dealing with this in the kind of weather we've been having because asshole low bid contractor decided to save a few bucks by not wrapping the pipes. I'm furious he was hired to build this place given his reputation for exactly this sort of thing.

Graduate student workers do a lot of the things professors do (grading, some teaching, particularly discussion sections, etc.), and being a grad student is incredibly expensive. Tuition is astronomically higher, and not always covered by grants, scholarships, etc.. The cost of books is massive even compared to undergraduates in the more expensive disciplines. (The books you need for things like advanced language classes and history cost almost as much as housing did for me in grad school per term). The same housing shortages and skyrocketing housing prices effect them as they do everyone else and on campus graduate housing tends to be super limited, especially if you have a spouse or family, which means dealing with expensive city housing markets).

I absolutely support the strikers. Universities use grad students and adjunct professors as a way to avoid paying for tenure track and tenured professors in the quantities they need. Seriously, given the geometric tuition inflation in my lifetime, most universities can afford to pay all their workers properly, they just chose not to.

* Thursday was really bad mobility wise. Bonus points for hours of intermittent Internet connection. Monday was astonishingly difficult physically as well for no apparent reason. Tuesday was a touch better. We have dropped off the car for the procedure. Let's hope Medicare transport goes okay.

* The car ended up being $450.00. When they lifted the assembly out, they discovered the spark plugs were close to the end, so they just charged parts to replace them. I vaguely remember this being what happened more than a decade ago, last time they redid this part of the car, so was rather expecting it.

We are at the trapped on the kitchen floor weeping because I couldn't find the safe for me spaghetti pot and then discovered I couldn't get up level Wednesday. Thursday was supposed to be full rest after I got the car back in the morning, but Ha! No! People kept calling me, and then it turned out I'd forgotten to sign my check so I had to go back to the mechanic before the 5 O'clock close.

(One of the things I love about Honest Mechanic is their super strict business hours. They are opened 8-5 weekdays. Everyone gets a full hour of lunch and is paid what they deserve for their skilled labor. Everyone is treated decently and they are never asked to work even a minute early or late. No bothering people when they are off the clock. Work/life balance encouraged. I will weep when the owner retires, though it will likely be okay with his son in his footsteps. I noticed tonight his son is about the age the father was when I first went there, and looks so like him they could almost be clones. I love when businesses are ethical in every respect).

As I'd already spent the gas to go downtown, I forced myself to do pharmacy and library, since medicare transport only does to and from doctor's appointments, so no errands happened Wednesday. I am already weepy tired, and in pain. We have one week of special girl cat food left, and I have concerns. I think there may be enough gas to last the month. We'll see.

OMG!!! I am getting new shoes! It was so hard to pick between skulls, spiderwebs, dice, and bats, in genderqueer or trans. I ended up with trans pirate sneakers after much deliberation. I've wanted shoes from there ever since they started making them.

* Elder Kitty has been stressed out and miserable since her recent illness. She's struggling to take her territory back, though she's making progress and has started sleeping on Livia's special chair, it being somewhere livia chose for her chair because Tavy doesn't bother her there. This is rather a loss for Livia, but i suspect Elder kitty will go back to the sofa and pettin throne once things have calmed down.

Elder kitty is a stress peer. She has always been a stress peer.

Today I discovered she'd soaked Tavy's favorite scratchy thing and her sofa cushion. I've spent hours trying to clean it and wore myself right the fuck out. I did the best I could and I'm going to try again over the weekend, but I suspect I'll never get the smell fully out. Damn it. The cushion cover needs a little mending anyway, so I'm going to try to address that before I put things back together.

She's old and very frail and stressed out. It's really not her fault.

* So the point of me going out yesterday was I was out of one thing and down to one pill of another thing. Also, I kind of needed bananas, which cut down on that whole body spasm situation I had going on last night. (I was able to make a magic smoothie today, so there shouldn't be a repeat tonight). At bed time, I dumped out the back pack with my meds and library stuff on my bed. I'd just kicked Tavy off for unnecessary roughness, so it was just me and Livia. She was thinking of flitting, but I mesmerized her with the pharmacy bag (she was too shy to play with it, but had a great time watching/listening to me try to entice her), a good game of jingle stick without Tavy, and some dental treats which she adores. She is still shy with me at times, but making progress and it is a rare thing to get one on one play time. So I'm sorting and stowing periodically with one hand, and playing with Livia with the other.

When I paid at the pharmacy, I had five prescriptions. When I went to bed, I had four, but I didn't notice this, what with being exhausted and Livia and all. I take the last pill from the bottle and casually toss it away, secure in my belief that I had a whole new bottle. I switched the pillows into sleeping configuration, read for a bit, put out the light. Tavy had settled amoungst my legs and Livia was playing with something on the bed, but I'd have to dislodge Tavy to check and anyway, it sounded like maybe she had one of the balls on one of the small flattened pharmacy bags they like to have in their mesting box. I like to toss whatever of their toys are around on floor in he bedroom into the mesting box, because Tavy likes digging in there and discovering them. If one has a cat as high energy, intelligent, and easily bored as Tavy, one learns to set up things like the busy box, the busy bag, and the mesting box to entertain him while one sleeps, and now their are two little hellions to keep entertained. They'd flatted the sides of the busy box and I haven't gotten around to fixing it, so a roll thump, rattle roll sound was only mildly ominous as it sounded rather like the ball or whatever had rolled on or in or next to the kitten ring toy on that side of the bed and maybe she was playing with both? So I made a note to check in the morning and went to sleep.

5-6 hours later, I wake up, realize I really ought to take another dose if I want any hope of going back to sleep given the whole still sick situation. Can't find the bottle. Get up, turn on light, search properly. No bottle. Search area around the bed meds shelf. No bottle. Run mental image of my emptied pack, realize that the other four items from the pharmacy bag were big square boxes, but the bottle wasn't amoung them. Get up, turn on lights, search back pack and environs plus anywhere else I could reasonably have put or dropped it. Fuckfuckfuck. Thoroughly awake, I phone the pharmacy and leave a message asking them to check if I left it on the counter or if it might have rolled. Could it have fallen out in the car in the brief time it took to open the back pack and put the bag in it? It couldn't be stolen, even though it was the one thing in their someone who wasn't another serious lung patient would steal, as I was super careful to lock the car doors for errands because I didn't want a backpack full of library books and meds to get stolen. There is now no chance of sleep what with the adrenaline and the mystery and the infection symptoms worsening, so I read a couple of chapters of 15th Century land disputes and how they played into and were effected by Lancasterian/Yorkist tensions. (I reached the first battle of the War of the Roses, though they don't know it's going to be a War yet). I finished Rupert Everrett's witty, charmingly written book about death, the vanished years, which had been partially brushed aside for the crusades, had as it was to only read small chuncks every day instead of swallowing it whole. I did morning meds. I pet Tavy and watched Kiki's Delivery Service, which I had seen only the once with Skye right after Princess Mononoke came out.

I was in the bathroom, stealing myself for the terrible chore of getting dressed, when I look over and see it: the missing pill bottle. Livia likes to play with toys that roll in the bathroom as it's got a big empty space to chase things around in there, and indeed, I'd just been rolling things for her to chase in their the night before. How I didn't literally step on the bottle at any time during the night, I don't know. That rattling about? Her stealing the bottle from where it must have rolled under the big leg prop pillow.

What a clever, clever girl. She's actually Tavy length now and noticeably heavier than when she arrived, though still kitten shaped and deceptively small looking when she's rolled in a ball or hunched sitting upright. It's when she's stretched on her side, or walking, or standing on hind legs next to him that one really notices her length. he's still got adult weight and muscle on her, but the way she's eating she's still growing fast. 5 months old.

* So health wise, I'm still feeling ick and not sleeping properly, but there is an upward trend. This is a more functional degree of sick. I am going gently while I can, though I did change a tank and start on the hook Project. See, one of the Gothmas prezzies this year was a whole collection of assorted wall hooks. I did do a little emergency hook mounting so as to better anchor big Halloween tree, but a lot of the places that really need hooks are hard to work with at the best of times and are even harder during the September to January 2nd Gothmas season, what with all the things in that side of the room that are fragile and/or in the way. I have this whole plan for replacing flimsier mountings and adding mountings in areas that can use them either for aesthetics or Halloween tree safety. I managed to get one hook in, but had to give up halfway through the second because of spoon shortage, but I have until next September to finish the project. how to tell you are an adult: Excited about finally having enough hooks on your mantle and walls to attach all the things.

Anyway, I am doing my best to catch up on things I missed while being too sick to even, while at the same time trying to cope with the ongoing news firehouse. I haven't forgotten archaeological updates, but they have been back burnered until I am less queasy and prone to needing to lie down suddenly. My apologies to the handful of you who like archaeology news as much as I do.

- 1.7: The Infinate Vulcan. Okay, the mobile purple poisonous plant puffs are cute. Why is Sulu touching random plants they haven't scanned properly for safety yet? How often have Enterprise crew been drugged, injured, or killed by dangerous alien plants? Do they learn nothing from experience? Shouldn't there be safety protocols? The locals rescue Sulu. Apparently humanoids infected them with disease but also gave them an antidote and made himself their leader, but only after most of them died and they've been rendered unable to reproduce. Okay, I really like the tentacle dragons. The locals steal Spock. Of, course. For the giant clone human from the Eugenics War to use to "create a Master Race." Of course. Because Spock is "the finest the Master has ever found." It's a Spock's Brain type scenario only with a clone army. It is weird that Kirk's choke technique works on plants. They are killing poor innocent plants with weed killer. So the plan to use the Spock army to impose peace. Kirk points out that the federation already does this. Spock says that his clones won't impose a version of peace that violates the Vulcan infinite diversity precept. The giant Spock clone uses a mind meld to save original Spock. The two giant clones will stay to do science. They sure pack a lot in half an hour. Sulu just called himself "inscrutable." I... wow. Just wow. Holy things that don'r age well, Batman.

* I woke up randomly exhausted with no obvious cause, which is a thing that happens with a body like mine. I did achieve phone bureaucracy, have secured pie for tomorrow, and did a bunch of correspondence. I am still scary behind on news, for which I apologise. * I was really into this movie called Ghost Story when I was eleven. Now you may be asking yourself, what kind of parents are letting a kid that young watch a movie with that much nudity and sex, including male full frontal. The answer is, I was a quiet, responsible kid who was sneaky as hell and had access to cable. <.< >.>

Anyway, I haven't seen this movie since it fell out of rotation at some point in the first half of the '80's and always intended to see if it stood up to time and adulthood. I am watching it now. Look, it was released in '81 so the special effects don't hold up particularly well, which is as expected. It is beautifully shot though and the set designs/art direction is lovely. It stars people like Fred Astaire and Douglas Fairbanks Jr, though I am in no position to evaluate the acting, because so much of this is interior furniture in my brain. It is a sausage fest, and I suspect a lot of the female nudity was for straight male titilation, though despite the male nudity, there was nothing to tittillate me as the young male lead who is trying to figure things out is as unappealing to be now as he was to me then and his brother is even less appealing. I was not getting out of it, what one might think an eleven year old would get out of it.

The thing is, watching it, I was not sympathizing with any of the men. I did not like crappy David and his crappy brother, Donnie. As charming as Fred Astaire could be, the Chowder Club did a terrible thing and they were getting what they deserved. Yes, visiting punishment on sons for the sins of a father is not cool, but they were mediocre guys anyway in every respect from what I could see in the narrative. Like, do they deserve the stuff happening to them? Probably not, but they aren't people I'd spend time with on purpose.

No, I was all about Alma. I liked her. I got her. I got why she felt the way she did and why she did the things she did. I appreciated her sense of agency, her confidence. I was furious on her behalf. To me, her nudity existed as contrast. It was the weapon that was left her when all else was taken away but her anger. This, eleven year old me could understand and identify with, though I was not yet good looking to any but the pedophiles. It was a weapon I would understand and use later in a few years as an unnervingly confident teen with a strong sense of personal agency. Anger was something I lived and breathed. Her anger was as justified as mind and I was all for her getting her vengeance once I knew it's reasons in later watchings. Did I at eleven get all the nuances of the Chowder Club original sin? No, but I get the text of it and all the important bits of the subtext. My angle of vision is a little deeper now, but I got the dynamic and the gendered ugliness just fine back then. I think that's why it haunted me so, the fundamental masculine stupidity of it, the way she was clearly worth ten of them and deserved so much better.

The essential power of truth and the telling of Story, the revealing of what was hidden changing everything? That too spoke to me.

Does it hold up in modern context? I can't say. I do not think it's a movie that could or should be made now. It still has something though, and I'm not sorry I saw it again for all it's flaws.

* I have been reading the fascinating Indexing, which had me thinking about the Little Mermaid. Not the movie, which I've never seen as it came out when I was in college and was rumored to have a happy ending, but the original tale, by Hans Christian Anderson. This was the one of all the fairy tales, and nursery rhymes, and literary outings on that same continuum that resonated most with me as a kid. I think my father first read it to me when I was three, and it stayed a favorite until I got old enough to be rereading things like Dumas and Tolkien on my own, and my father was just reading to my sitter. (Later I would read to her in his place, but that is another story).

The Little Mermaid really spoke to me, and I learned so much from it. The longing to be and do something new and to travel places far away. The important lesson that no matter how much you love someone, they may not ever love you back. That you cannot, do not, should not try to own someone else no matter how perfect that image of you together might be in your head. That you don't get to make other people's decisions for them, but you do get to decide how you react to those decisions. That every single one of us gets to write our own story, make our own decisions, control our own narrative of who we are and who we are going to be by the choices we make and how we deal with the consequences of those choices. That you can't hang all of your future and happiness on a single person.

These are incredibly important lessons, that I think every child should walk out into the world armed with. I think thy are incredibly important when those children grow into teens and adults and try to date other people, but they are incredibly important long before that. This story helped save me when I was eight years old. This story influenced me to lift my head up and decide that while they could pretty much do what they wanted to me, they could not tell me who I was. I got to decide who I was. I got to decide my own story and what it meant. I got to chose to resist and how. They could physically imprison my body, but not my thoughts and they could not stop me using their limits against them, and surviving. I would not consent to my own oppression. I would not let them simplify me and define me.

I decided to be the hero of my own story, and that is fundamentally what saved me. No one was coming to save me, but I would do what I could to survive and save my self. I would do it honorably. I would do it cleverly. I would do it.

Many things went into that decision, but I think a life line tossed across the nearly a century between his death and my birth, by a gay man who loved a straight man who could never love him back played a part in shaping me so fundamentally that I could have that perspective at eight, and at twelve, and at fifteen, when it really mattered. Story has a magic to it, and never let anyone tell you otherwise, because the stories we tell about ourselves to ourselves are the most powerful ones of all.
