No the "Democrats" aren't censoring Dr. Seuss. The Seuss estate decided on their own to stop publication of a handful of low sellers with imagery they understandably don't particularly want to be associated with anymore.

Take it from me, a person who spent a big chunk of my professional life working in and shelf reading children's libraries: I looked at the cancelled titles and literally only recognized two of them. These are not popular books. I remember seeing the zoo one around, but I've never read it.

The only one with any real circulation of the set is Mulberry Street. When I was asked to read it to kids, I used to deliberately cover that character with my thumb, because it's not okay. Odds are if people really want this to keep publishing you could edit that out pretty easily Really though? Odds are if you check the titles you won't recognize most of them either.

I did look, and the zoo one? Wow! Yeah, I'd not show that to kids. Eww. I can see why the family doesn't want to be selling that. The other ones honestly didn't strike me as worth the effort.

I'm a lot happier remembering Seuss for the many, many good books he wrote instead of his most embarrassing efforts. If you see hysterical coverage about how democrats are yanking the Cat and the Hat out of libraries it's a big fat lie. cat in the Hat and the other popular titles aren't ceasing publishing and no one is calling for book burning. You'd think republicans would support the estate's free market decision to stop producing books that don't sell, but they are Grade A hypocrites.

* It feels like the headlines are being written by a fuzzy logic AI trained on Onion Articles.

* Wednesday: Monday they mowed the lawn, kicking up lots of allergens, plus it's humid and no rain for a few days, plus I was outside in the allergens for a few hours. A cloth mask isn't that much help under the circumstances and I need to save the last heavy mask for emergencies. I only managed a few hours of sleep Monday anyway between AS stuff and allergens, and mowing related sinus headache. It got worse over the course of the evening to the point of things being really impossible. Like massive pain, serious lung congestion, and my throat completely fucked because lawn grass is the worst of my allergies.

I did a lung treatment, drained my sinuses, washed off the allergens, and went to bed. it's not COVID. I can tell because ten hours under filtration nearly cured my throat and cut the congestion in half. I am using maximum medication. I am washing bedding over and over. I am using all the tricks both for allergies and AS. I'm still periodically in too much pain to read, which makes be so queasy it's hard to keep the meds down.

I have to lie down a lot, often on very short notice. I could cope with either AS pain or the headache but both got to be too much, so I've given up and broken out the emergency meds. Even with that, I still had day three of pain insomnia, though the quality when I did manage to get to sleep a couple times was higher.

I have the shakes, am pasted together with more meds than I like, and I make no promises of quality. I also have a massive backlog of links ready to post. I'll see how much can get up before I have to lie down again.

* Tuesday night I had a scare when i went to take my bath. The washer Dryer area looked like a crime scene on a cat scale. Small, fresh pools of blood. Spatter. Tiny bloody paw prints. I was terrified Elder Kitty was dead or dying. I roused Squirrel from his game, by which point the pounding and yelling required to get his attention over his head phones had summoned the Elder Kitty from wherever she was.

I had heard no arguments, so I knew it hadn't been a fight. Livia and Tavy were both napping, but also woke up in the commotion. It couldn't have been Livia anyway, because the paw prints. Squirrel examined her for injuries. She'd ripped out a claw. It was an alarming amount of blood, but nothing else was wrong with her beyond the expected. She was walking about as well as she was earlier in the evening.

I'd been doing laundry, and she's recently developed an interest in the dryer, which was running at the time. Current theory is she crit failed a dex roll making a jump she couldn't handle with the stroke clumsy, panicked, and ripped the nail in the process.

By the time Squirrel examined her, it'd already stopped bleeding, and she's getting around okay on it.

It was scary as fuck, and the clean up was horrible.

* Wednesday 2:51PM: Good Girl Livia just rescued Elder Kitty.

I heard thumps at the patio door, like there used to be when Elder Kitty was angry at a stranger cat being on the patio, so I look up. No visible stranger cat and Livia is very excited about something, so I assumed it was a hummingbird. Only every time I look down she starts squeaking emphatically. Finally I look up in time to spot Elder kitty on the wrong side of the glass. she must have escaped while I was watering plants. she went and hid when I came to the door, but I coaxed her in with the promise of shreds. (I talk to them a specific way at meal times so they know to gather when I make sounds like that. I told them what good girls they were and now is shred time.

* Thursday: My head still feels like it's a rotten pumpkin someone keeps trying to carve. The AS is also kicking my ass so I'm stiff, clumsy, and in pain. The amount of medication I need to not be in unbearable agony makes me foggy. I still need to lie down a lot.

There has been a lot of cat excitement today. Livia was on her forth pettin for the day when she got all excited, ran to the foot of the bed. and tail waving excitedly she started actually meowing in that weird high pitched voice she has instead of just squeaking. I went to look. It was Elder Kitty! In my room! Of her own volition! I kept happening as I finished Spindrift and got it together as I was getting ready to leave the bed.

She clearly wanted up, but didn't quite dare. It's Tavy turf and he can get really nasty about it when he's in a jealous mood. The bed is also really high. She knew Livia and I were up there, as we had peered over the edge, but she didn't know where he was. I know she can get down, and there's a mounting stool, so I lifted her up when I left, which seemed to please her even if she dislikes being picked up. Livia was very excited, but gave her space. I went off to do the necessary chores and start the potato I was hoping I could keep down. Each time I passed, the girls were peaceably hanging out on opposite sides of the bed.

She must have heard me going out to water the plants, as when I returned with the watering can, she was at the door all hopeful. I moved her to the sill and quick tried to put the can outside, but she darted between my legs and was gone before I could bend to grab her. See AS kicking my ass above.

There was nothing for it to get Squirrel, who was up for some reason. He did find her eventually and bring her back in. I felt terrible until he admitted she'd done the same to him when he got home from work. normally she's scared of outside and scared of Tavy attacking her on my bed. She likely tore out that claw trying to make an impossible for her jump in my bathroom and last night she tried to steal my buttered noodles. I'm thinking maybe it's the dementia advancing or stroke after effects giving her the wanders and/or making her fearless.

After lungs, I spotted her napping on my bed on the opposite side from where Livia was napping. I snuck out to take the Lily pictures, as she escaped again on my way back in and trying to get around in the bushes with a crutch and AS this bad was a nightmare, but I got her back in the end, but not without getting a bunch of micro splinters in my foot.

* Friday: I am improving, but still needing a lot of rest and medication. It helps that there is a cooler breeze off the bay so i could tolerate a slightly longer bath, though not long enough. My plan was to get lots of sleep. Ha! No! I got up to go to the bathroom and found an extra girl in my bed. I stroked her back so she'd know that she was in fact welcome. When I returned, she'd co-opted my head pillow. I don't blame her, that thing is ridiculously comfortable. She had kindly left enough room for my head, so i settled in next to her and gave her a long pet.

At which point the Emperor turned up wanting HIS Pet, as i had all the filter on, but not the fan. He climbed onto my hip and spotted That Other Cat brazenly sleeping in the Imperial Bed, Imperial territory and the most important territory in the apartment, especially when I'm on it. He perched on my hip glaring at her, but we think the stroke damaged the part of her brain that does things like fear, so she just stared back at him. He sensibly intuited that I was kicking everyone out if they started a fight on top of me, so he was grumpily accepting a pet when Livia turned up with the clear intention of claiming her pettin. Hear head swiveled between them in alarm. I offered her a scritch, but she decided the atmosphere was way too heavy for her to want to drape herself across my torso between them, so she settled down on the other side of her favorite body pillow.

Then the phone rang. Tavy lept off, because he knows that sound means I'm about to move to grab it. Elder Kitty: ha! I win! It was the police charity scammers. I had to block a scammer a few days ago, which means ublocking a number. It looks like I'm bout to get the police/fire charity scammers out of Seattle cascade for the next week or two as I block/unblock numbers. They are relentless and call up to three times a day if they aren't blocked. Sigh.

I settle back down, lure Tavy back on, and he decides, Fuck it, he wants the full curl up on my tummy for a long cuddle pet even if That Other Cat is pressed up against my head. I'd just started petting him, when the phone rang. Moherfucker! Everyone left. It was an autodialer. And i can't block the ring and run autodialers, because sometimes it's Medicare or Medicare advantage. I drink some water and roll offer, headache blooming.

I start to drift off anyway; the phone rings. Of curse it did. Medicare advantage calling to inform me I hadn't used any of my behavioral heath coverage. Which of course I can't even if I needed it because trauma. I'm really the fuck good at dealing which my own shit and have spent a lifetime quietly dismantling triggers and healing myself, and am honestly one of the most stable people I know. I'm highly adaptive and good at things like coping with lockdown etc.. I am extremely disciplined about working through trauma. I have to be: see long history of incredibly abusive child psychology.

What I actually say is: "I'm fine. Yes, I know the benefit exists, but I don't need it." Which is true. Would I rather we didn't have a monster in charge of our government who is deliberately trying to infect and kill as many people as possible? Yes, but I am dealing with my responses to that as I need to. At which point she tries to hard sell me, and I get it. There is a global mental health crisis and this plan is for disabled and/or elderly people in extreme poverty, a group that is particularly vulnerable and isolated right now. I know she meant well and bullying boomers into behavioral health could save lives. Except I'm an Xer and not isolated and I have a particular set of psychological tools that work pretty damned well in this emergency. Me: "I'm fine and I'd rather save those slots for people who need help. There's a global mental health crisis on a limited resources." She reiterated that the benefit is there if I need it.

I am now far to awake to sleep. This is just way to much disruption. I reach for my book. The phone rings. %#$&! It's the lung people wanting to arrange a shipment of ampules. Which is a long conversation in itself. This is why I can't turn off the phone when I sleep. Medicare, Medicare advantage, doctors, dentists, the lung people, and my regular pharmacy like to call when I'm sleeping and it's way better to just answer the thing and deal with whatever it is they want than play daytime phone tag with them.

So sleep was done, despite me rather needing another 2-3 hours of it. Oh well. I finished the nice queer fantasy/sf anthology I'd been reading (Tangle) and petted cats all day. Elder kitty returned to what is now her pillow. The Imperial couple periodically cadged pets. At one point Elder Kitty was wrapped around my head the way hector used to like, Tavy was crashed out on my hip, and Baby Girl was stretched on her favorite body pillow next to me while they all had a good nap. Livia's idea of a really good day involves loves from her personal human, hanging out peaceably with the clowder, and bird and/or fish TV. This may be Livia's best day ever.

At one point I heard squirrel moving around, and I had a suspicion he was worried about his cat. Given her age and state of health.... Yeah. And she usuall spends some of her day sleeping with him in his bed. He saw my light and called my name. I didn't wait for the question. "I have her in hear. She's fine." I was under the sheet and he peeked in and checked, relief in his voice. I explained she'd been there all day. We talked a bit about her and he went off relieved.

When I came out, Tavy had pissed on the sofa and the floor in front of it, the puddle soaking two other layers. I don't blame him, really. He had to take out his feelings somehow and starting a fight in bed just wasn't on.

* Saturday, I discovered that I'm pretty much fucked as to EBT benefits. The card went missing at the beginning of April so I couldn't, you know use it. So I called it in and the automated system lied that they were sending a replacement. I say lied because it's now may 8th and they haven't sent it yet. Towards the end of April, I called in concerned because it wasn't there. The man on the phone lied to me that they'd issued it on the 12th. he refused to tell me how many more weeks or months it was likely to take to mail it. I pointed out that I had food benefits in a month. No help there. I just have to be patient as it takes as many months as it takes to mail a card halfway across town. I pointed out that if I didn't use the April benefits they go away. He lied that they don't do that and when they got around to sending it the money would all me there.

Saturday was May 6th. Instead of my card, they sent a letter telling me that I would lose the benefit money if I didn't use the card by two days previously they were taking the money. They did not enclose a time machine, or my card so i still can't use it as they direct, nor any apologies for deliberately lying to me on the phone that they weren't going to do what I was worried they would do. They also did not tell me when they were sending a card or how I can use the benefit without a card to avoid further penalties.

Bonus: A cat pissed on the sofa and I forgot to drive Friday so the car died again.

* This was a rough week for me physically. I'm fighting a battle with the bacteria for my ear canals and coughing up chucks, none of which is remotely life threatening, but is exhausting and unpleasant. Seriously, on my scale this is minor stuff. I'm also still having above average pain issues left over from the most recent pain incident. I've been futzing with the living room. I had a lot of fish stuff going on. I had a variety of pain and external sleep disruptions including fire testing. Luckily they decided not to inspect apartments what with the pandemic. I was concerned about the trooping in and out exposing people. They stuck to the halls, but it was still unpleasant for us and the poor wee beasties who really freak out because the sound is everywhere so there is no hiding.

We're okay, though. It's just normal stuff. Exhausting stuff, but normal stuff. The shortage of news posting was be prepping and reading, but not having the energy to do up tumblr and dreamwidth properly and opting for bed instead of fighting through.

Force economies open in areas where the pandemic is escalating fastest in order to maximize deaths, while knowing full well that killing all these people and driving small businesses to bankruptcy by withdrawing support when people are too afraid to patronize them will actually do more economic harm in the long run than lockdowns and will kill vastly more people than following the administrations own published health policy. 9 call on people to gather in large numbers in order to infect as many people as possible for the political and financial gain of those in power.

* When I went out to collect the cat food shipment today, I was scooting it back through the lobby with my foot while balancing on one crutch. I heard a door open in the hall. Luckily, they were down the other t, and the man waited with his head poking out instead of blythely proceeding as some of the Grad Students are apt to do. He saw me gimping along pushing the heavy box and huffing and puffing. Get this: he asked if I wanted a hand while staying in his doorway well over safe distance away. I thanked him, but explained I was high risk so best not. so polite and kind! He looked my ageish, though I'm bad at working these things out as people younger than me are sometimes all or mostly grey, but some are like me so idk. Genetics re weird. Also, he was masked up and at a distance. He had grey streaks though so odds are my agish: old enough to be considerate and vary; young enough to risk himself for a weird elder goth on a crutch. Anyway, it was textbook etiquette, I thought. He waited until I was scooting the thing inside to leave.

We're holding up well here supply wise. We have enough paper products for the nonce. We have about 2 month's supply of cat food carefully stockpiled as of today's shipment. Plan is to order the normal amount next month and rotate. Given shipping delays and lack of local supply I feel so much safer now we have a cushion instead of running out or nearly running out each time. The Millenials plan to go shopping soon and they have my list.

In bad news, I went out to drive the car around to keep the battery good during router reboot and discovered it wasn't. Let's hope Squirrel can recharge it for me when he gets home.
