This is pretty much where I was with this. I was low key obsessed with both Brideshead (Book and miniseries) and the Nureyev Nijinsky's Faun (and Nijinsky just generally. Also ballet) as a tween. I've seen talented Mr. Ripley any number of times.

On paper this was so exciting. The bones of something interesting were there. In practice? I kept thinking I'd rather be watching the Andrews/Irons miniseries of my youth.

* Tuesday evening, Head Millennial came to do a bunch of per-surgery house prep, even though it was his day off. seriously a superstar. The cats DID NOT Approve of being locked out of my room because of the anti-infection protocol. They kept gathering in front of the door and staring with a deep look of betrayal. Then I needed a nap, and they were locked out, poor buttons. Squirrel came home to find alarmed cats congregating outside my door, possibly concerned i had crawled in there to die, given how injured I obviously am. They were very relieved when I emerged, but clearly knew something is up. They eventually wore themselves out and crashed hard around one AM, poor buttons.

I did manage to get the things needing doing done between when I got up from the nap and 5Am transport. Also my ID fell out in the Taxi, leading to later drama, but it was all right. The medicare card stayed in the book where I'd tucked it, and they were willing to check me in with that. I travel light to the hospital: comfortable clothes, assorted ID (sometimes paperwork they are likely to need, but not this time), a book for the long waits, and a mask. I don't bring any people, because really, I just want to read and what sort of monster drags extra people into a hospital waiting room to make them sit around for five or six hours, especially during a pandemic, unless they have to be there because of disorientation, dementia, mental health, or translation issues? (Some people do need a helper and that's okay. I don't.)

Everyone was really nice at the hospital. I still find the morning prayer announcement unnerving, though now it's more non-denominational and good thoughts instead of a formal prayer. In any case, being first cut of the day for that operating room, meant no delays. Surgery was routine and about an hour. They moved me out of acute recovery pretty quickly, as i was pretty clearly compose mentos and doing fine after the initial ten minutes, and the lady I was sharing the male nurse with was having a very bad time of it. (I really felt terrible for her).

Anyway, I had ice, juice, crackers and meds in the regular recovery station and Squirrel took me home. I ended up having to do a lot of phone bureaucracy and not just for the missing ID. (There has been an ongoing drama between the nebulizer people and my doctor that's been delaying shipments. I thought it was settled last week. Apparently it was not. This is why i stockpile meds. If I didn't, I'd be doing all this plus a particularly brutal allergy season without meds for the last two weeks. This is NOT the doctor's fault. Some of you may remember the resent drama with me trying to get a replacement machine awhile back and the ensuing nightmare with not being able to get treatments until I was hypoxic. Fun times! There was another medical equipment thing that was my fault, and I decided to sort out while I was at it and some pharmacy stuff and a thing i decided to sort since it was on the same paper with the transport phone numbers. The cab guy did eventually bring me the Id back, so that's okay. I took naps where i could.

Tavy has been alternating jealous/clingy and bitey for about two weeks when I started deteriorating rapidly. He's also been sassy with Head Millennial, which is in a sway a sign of how much he adores him This continues, though he's starting to calm down as of Thursday afternoon. Livia decided I was probably a doppelganger sent by the vet to trick her into a crate judging by my smell, so it was a rather tense time here at the cat asylum for a while. (If Livia hasn’t seen one of us for enough hours, she is wary that we might be doppelgangers. It’s a whole thing, but if it was just squirrel at work or me shopping, she usually decides we’re okay quickly. This time I was moving funny and smelled like hospital. It’s a reasonable concern.) Head Millennial took great care of me all evening. Went I got up for the 2:45 ice/meds, etc., I finally convinced Livia I probably was me and she got her proper bed pettins. The cats are still concerned, but cautiously optimistic.

Head Millennial came in the evening to take care of me. He did a wonderful job. The mashed potatoes are plentiful. I have lots of pre-cut fruit. He took care of assorted small stuff I couldn't handle myself, including watering plants, cat things, laundry folding. (I did two loads of laundry Tuesday because everything needed to be pristine.) He was a superhero. There is no way i could have handled any of this without him. He set me up with last meds and fresh ice for bed before leaving.

I am of course heavily drugged still, but I've had at least two worse surgeries than this, and a different one of the same severity in the same region of the body. (The removal of Herberton, a tumor colony the approximate size and shape of my brain.) I'm being very good about doing my anti-blood clot and post-op pneumonia exercises, and I'm doing fine as long as I don't move much or worse bend over *shudder* Money for food I don't have to cook or oven replacement is welcome as I'll likely be ready for better food by the weekend. (I am currently living on fruit, crackers, and mashed potatoes and am thinking about maybe some soup later). Expected recovery is five weeks, which is no surprise at all, as I’ve been here before. The first week is the rough bit, with the first couple days the worst.

The quality of news prepped after Tuesday may be low and somewhat redundant as frankly the Ukrainian things are mushy in my head. I do apologize for this, and hopefully by the time the next aggregate goes up, i will be way more together.

* Friday, Livia got her appetite back and I actually saw her playing. By Saturday, Tavy had transitioned out of "Human Must Be Guarded At All Times" mode into normal for Tavy mode. So far no signs of infection. I did go into shock Friday because I pushed a little to hard and am characteristically apt to stretch too long between pain meds doses. (Long time readers will know about the bad reaction a lot of people on my mom's side of the family have to both opioids and anti-psychotics. I luckily didn't inherit the full on version of it, but opioids are legitimately unpleasant for me to take. Imagine the taste of holly bark and the smell of diesel fumes mixed with crushed snake in a metal garbage can in July. Now imagine that smell/taste combination was a feeling in the back of your head mixed with a generalized malaise and you, too, would go as long as you can bear between oxycodin doses.)

This is so much more manageable than pre-surgury was. Sure, I need a stupid amount of sleep with very little warning and if I move wrong it feels like the Ides of march, but most of the time, it's just itchy and exhausting instead of my body endlessly screaming that Something Is Wrong 24/7 and almost as exhausting. On the scale of surgeries I've had this is only the forth most dire. Trust me, this was very worth it.

* Saturday we went to the museums downtown as there were a couple of exhibits scheduled to be gone Monday we really wanted to see, and addition covers both buildings. (Thee is a third small museum in the cluster, but it's closed on weekends. Unfortunately, one of the exhibits we really wanted to see had left early, but the replacement was basically meditations on the human body by a very diverse group of artists. There were a number of interesting paintings, but the sculptures really stood out as a group. We went upstairs and looked at the Lummi and Nooksack exhibit, then over to see the small but extremely good 20th century fashion exhibit which was the other thing we were particularly wanting to see. Bonus, the dresses were free standing so you could walk all the way around to look over the construction and enjoy them from various angles. They also had a tone of hats mostly from the 20's and 30's, a nice array of shoes including some early twentieth century boots 18-35 year old be would have killed to have a pair of, and some lovely and deadly looking hat pins. We wandered around looking at the other permanent exhibits, then watched a surprisingly amusing educational film about our weird little... large town? Small City? (Population wise we are on the bubble. Signs insist it's a city, my instinct and the technical classification put it just under the limit in large town territory).

We left about fifteen minutes before turf out time take and bake pizza and baked goods were aquired and I passed out tea and the like.

Samhain went really smoothly. I got everything set up in time. I did the contactless individual bowls of mixed candy and did up my All ages welcome sign. I believe this holiday is fundamentally about hospitality to all comers living and dead. I also feel anyone who makes it all the way to my place deserves a fist full of candy. Last year adults kept furtively raiding the bowls. The sign dramatically increased the number of people quietly collecting their fist full. Yay, guilt free candy. The wind had been really high the last few nights, but it was gentle breezes tonight which really helped with the altar I set up back in the patio recess out of the way every year. With the hospitality table and the plants forming a barricade it was extra safe and I wasn't having to deal with making a make shift windbreak like I did the last few years.

Tavy kept trying to follow me out to search the bush he thinks Millennials come from, and succeeded after dark. He knows that today is usually a head Millennial day. (He's a bright guy. He knows sometimes the Head Millennial comes the afternoon after forage box delivery, so keeps an ear alert for patio sounds when it gets late enough, but he knows for sure Head Millennial comes the next afternoon and sometimes also Nearby Millennial. He knows the day after that there is usually another visit from head Millennial. Alas for the emperor for Halloween is a Goth national holiday, so he was off tending his own Pumpkins and the like. Poor little guy finally slipped out after dark. It was scary and there were strangers and a thing fell. He realized he'd made a mistake right away, but panicked a bit trying to get past the barrier to get back in. I made soothing sounds and he remembered he fit fine when he wasn't all bunched up and scurried in. He did enjoy people watching through the window.

Livia decided it was too much excitement for her after a while. I was up and down all night checking and periodically refilling bowls, checking candles. Going in and out the patio door. She's come out for pets, etc., but spent most of the night in her room where it was calmer.

* Where I am on Y: the Last Man:

I am wary because the graphic novel was very transphobic and the premise is everyone with a y chromosome with tiny exceptions died.

However, they are pretty clearly trying to fix it as much as it can be fixed. They hired a trans man actor I like and made his part a lot bigger according to informants. He is very much treated and spoken of as a man, with the exception of some terfy villains (some people in that group very much see him as a man some don’t. They are very clearly depicted as villains). Multiple characters consistently mention there still being men at appropriate points, and occasionally when man child Yorick isn’t wearing his mask (see baby man), people take him for a trans man and are cool about transness. They mention Intersex people with Y chromosomes dying, some of whom likely didn’t know they are intersex, which implies intersex people without ys are alive.

It’s still messy. I’m not comfortable with the basic premise which is why I didn’t read the comics when they were new despite being an avid Vertigo reader. People who did read it described the contents and I decided I never wanted to read it. I’m basing my understanding of what’s been changed on that.

I actually do like several of the women characters. I do like the way non-villains have an easy acceptance of trans people. Elliot Fletcher‘s trans man is a whole character with flaws and his own perspectives and goals. They do address trans specific concerns like can you get hormones in a post-apocalyptic situation and some trans specific safety concerns. I really, really wish Yorick would grow the fuck up and take some responsibility for his own safety and examine the way his privilege harms other people. The villians are so horrible I have trouble watching certain sections because I get enough horrible Republican crap in the news. I’m never going to be comfortable with the premise.

But I keep watching. Warily.

* I was getting better. I swear I was. I started the second z-pac Thursday because while clearing, my lungs weren't clear. I also kind of felt crap Thursday evening, but in the expected ways given the war inside my body.

Ad then I had an ICU dream. These aren't nightmares. No really. I get them when my lungs are bad and the dream is about going on oxygen and having actual appropriate medical care. Other Americans will see why this is kind of an exciting concept. People in developed countries will likely be like: isn't that every day?

Anyway, I half woke up and thought, "Huh, that's odd. My lungs aren't bad enough for me to be dreaming about supplemental oxygen," and went back to sleep.

This was a mistake. I bet you can see the mistake already, but in my defense: half asleep and when I went to bed I was projecting them drying up by Monday.

I woke up with really bad lungs. Like worse than the day they started me on the second antibiotic bad lungs. I moved a little and ended up having to eject a cat and lean over the side of me bed in case I vomited from coughing bad.

My the time I got it together I was too late for the clinic call in hours, apparently. Like they were till open, but o longer answering phones.

Long time readers will know that I general get a virus and then an opportunistic bacterial lung infection moves in while my immune system is extra distracted between fighting off the virs and it's main goal of eating large sections of my body under the beleif that most of me is a foreign object.

Except this is clearly bacterial or it wouldn't have been responding to antibiotics. Which means odds are i just pulled the rare opposite scenario. What have I had to do a lot of the past three weeks? Go to assorted Doctors despite my real concern about infection risk. <.< >.>

Nothing could be done except wait for me to reach live people at the poverty clinic. I'm maxing out my lung treatments.

I think I need a COVID test. If I have it, odds are squirrel and I are both dead.

Update: It took an hour and a half on the phone, but I found an open slot. I can't get results until Tuesday because of the long weekend.

This isn't in the video, but the one movie costumes do that drives me up the wall is when 20th century movies have corsets or obvious mid-20th century bras that completely screw up the silhouette in dresses from eriods before stays were invented.

* I watch a lot of zombie movies. Like most of them at least once. One'll slip by here or there only to be noticed a few years later and I'll have to wait for some to come up somewhere I can watch free, but I watch them all, even the terrible z-grade ones. I've been dreaming about zombies in one form another since I was literally three, before I knew the word. IDK, they resonate with me for a bunch of reasons, some of which I've written about before.

I have watched aquatic NAZI zombies, stripper zombies, lederhosen zombies, crappy racist pre-Romero zombies. I love Romero and always will. I love Cemetery Man. Train to Busan is now my favorite, but seriously Dawn of the dead in particular was formative in a bunch of ways. I even watched the zombienado thing the sharknado people made.

I may have found one of the worst zombie movies ever made last night. I mean, at least Zombienado and the zombie strippers had some camp value and the self awareness to know they aren't making a good flick here, just making a flick period, so they just had fun with it. It was a terrible, terrible thing, that made very little sense, couldn't pick a tone, was consistently horribly racist despite being made in 2014 and randomly casually homophobic, and had possibly the stupidest, most annoying collection of characters ever assembled in a zombie movie. Also it was simultaneously vehemently christian and anti-christian in a way that just kept confusing me. It seemed to be trying to say something about religion, but the whole thing was so incoherent, I can't venture a guess as to what.

When I say stupid, I mean I literally could not figure out how this collection of people could survive an hour in a zombie apocalypse let alone a year and a half. These zombies are attracted to noise, but they never shut up and like yelling and screaming all the fucking time. All of their ideas are terrible and frequently deadly. The teenager keeps wandering off by herself. they keep putting limbs and faces next to infected people. they don't pay attention to undead they can see coming towards them because their annoying petty personal dramas are more important than not getting bitten. They keep splitting up and getting attacked.... Like seriously, how'd they make it this far?

The two supposedly bright characters really, really weren't. One was a bunch of ableist tropes (both mental and physical) in a man suit. The other? Was supposedly a scientist, but was only marginally brighter than the others. If this movie wasn't from the UK and six years old, I'd have thought he was a trump CDC political appointee. Like get this: They did mass inoculations of the military with an experimental vaccine they had not bothered to test for safety and efficacy. They had no tests to see if there were any side effects apparently before they lined them up and dosed them with the stuff. What could go wrong? Dude!

So I have to ask, how did someone with 45's level of mental impairment get put in charge of a biological warfare vaccine development program of this magnitude? How did he get the credentials to get hired? What muppet let him handle level four pathogens? Did not one person anywhere in the process suggest at least one proper phase 3 study?

And his decisions stopped making any sense at all once they ran into literal Sweet zombie Jesus. No really. There is a literal zombie Jesus and what little sense the character had in their heads falls right out along with the already minimal coherence to the plot.

I just can't with this film. I keep trying to work out what any of the characters were thinking or why they did any of the things they did and I can't. I still have no idea why zombie Jesus' powers worked the weird inconsistent way they did, just as I can't explain WTF they had a live action first person shooter style intro tacked on at the start of the movie and what if any information it was meant to convey.

They'd have been better off killing off these people as an intro and then made another better movie with characters that I actually wanted to watch doing things that made sense instead of bickering loudly to attract zombies and occasionally literally feeding themselves to zombies on purpose.

Do not watch Zombie Resurrection.
