Why is this important? The Social Security Administration has a notoriously difficult website to use. It requires a special log in thing that most people do not have. (Including me.) Sometimes they will issue you one and not tell you what it is if you get it at an SSA office. They don't, say email it to you, which would be useless in any case for people who don't have internet access or have disabilities that make using the Internet extra hard, and for people who often are older than the internet and have little to no appropriate skills, or are home bound and can't get to library, or have had their local library cut and also just had the SSA office near them closed, or.... You get the idea.

Approximately 80% of people on Social security or applying for benefits use the phone service, because it actually works if you are patient, unlike the glitchy and difficult to access web site.

This cut is really about denying people who paid into the system getting access to the benefits they paid for.

It also really fucks up seniors and people with disabilities who need things like Medicaid and EBT on top of their Medicare as those programs often require a proof of income letter once or twice a year that must be issued within 1-3 months of turning in your paperwork. (Exactly details are state by state. My state is once a year up to three months. My state is super lenient because it's been unified Democratic rule for decades and it works at keeping citizens alive instead of trying to kill them off). So do a bunch of other programs for seniors and people with disabilities. I have to interact with this phone system 2-4 times a year, depending on which of my services need re-upping.

The knock on effects of the planned cuts would have been huge!

* I am making progress on spinning up Killian Laptop. I downloaded a bunch of smaller programs, I finally convinced some browsers to sync. I've added some more accessibility extensions, and Saturday, I got a couple browsers set up with things so I could run some of the standard things I do everyday of him.

He's pretty fast compared to Klaus. The main problem I'm having is I can't get Waterfox to run on him. Our theory is maybe he's too old for modern iterations. I am trying earlier versions one by one, but I may be stuck with classic Waterfox, which is not supported and can't sync, so I keep having to stop to hand customize. I'll keep at it this week when I'm not in the aggregate crunch.

Livia also reached the end of her patience with a Thing the Emperor has been doing. The Empress is a peaceable animal by nature as long as you aren't live prey. She is more than twice his size, but she will generally give way as it's less hassle unless he pushes her too far.

Sunday, she decided she had had enough. For the last month or two, he's been peeing on everybody's favorite spot on my bed 5-6 times a week. I am a person with a clothes washer on it's last legs that can only use hot water. I can't wash multiple cat pads every night and he's also taken to running it to pee on the bed while I am getting ready for bed, so if he does it earlier, the cats are SOL for napping in the Best spot until I do the bed time laundry. Traditionally, he then gets really angry at the humans because Someone has Peed in the best spot!!!

This is Livia's favorite spot too. In fact, she sleeps there more than he does in winter as he decamps for his heated bed for most of his Night Napping.

Tavy's refusal to pee in the box has been inconveniencing her all this time. Sure, she has her second favorite spot: the bedroom window podium, which I tricked out for her in her youth, but a lot of cold seeps in on winter nights and though she is cold adapted, she would rather be a bit further from the window in the comfy spot in the elbow of the Pillow Mountain Range. She has a number of other popular spots, including the desk box, top of pillow mountain, and three other on bed locations. (She used to love sleeping on the sofa, but that is also covered in pee pads and Tavy pee by that time of night. In warmer weather there is also Living room Window box, but the emperor peed in the spare boxes, so I'm not bothering with a new one until the weather is good for window naps.)

Before you ask, yes, we tried keeping the boxes clean. He pees in the boxes to mark them after a change, then goes right back to the sofa if no one is sitting on it, and sometimes when they are. I'd have to scoop each box myself after every use, a thing I can't do with my lungs and arthritis. I miss when he used to pee in the tub or the sink. I could just run a little water after each use, but he doesn't anymore.

Anyway, Sunday night, Livia was camped in the Best Bed Spot and was Not Moving, because if she did, he'd just pee on it after a token sit to establish dominance. he tried all of the passive aggressive tactics. Which she ignored, and when he got physical, she yelled at him and wapped him a good one. He knows he can't win a physical fight, so he is asleep in his desk bed as of this writing and she is enjoying the Best Bed Spot in peace for the first time since he started the regular bed wetting.

Good on her.

* 7/4/24: I took Goth Millennial to the good (Cheap, employee owned) grocery store. We generally shop together and we both needed a lot of things. I need to restock a whole lot of stuff thrown out or given away in the Great Refrigerator disaster. So I'm zooping along in the riding cart because my hip joints hate me and my broken toe is healing extra slow and we kept having this thing where I was like, "Oh! We need to grab X." GM: but we HAVE X. Me: It was old and nearly empty, so I threw it out when we emptied the freezer. Them: sad face

The new refrigerator is a lot smaller and less disability friendly, It does, however, WORK and it's mechanisms are simpler so let's hope it doesn't break once every 1-2 years like the old one. A kind friend got me a new britta as we gave away our sink attachment, filter tank, and emergency jug when we moved here. The water is so cold and delicious, far better than the old fridge water. Finding anything in it is a drama, though, especially with the freezer. I was trying to get cheese for meds snack and spent ten minutes searching. I thought we'd saved emergency frozen broccoli for yesterday's dinner from the Great Fridge Disaster, but if we did, it was buried in my hurried restock, probably amongst the frozen fruit for smoothies. Sigh.

Related note: I searched every stir fry veggie pouch in the freezer section of the good grocery store and all of the mixed pouches had onions and/or carrots and/or cauliflower. Sigh. I do not like cauliflower except in a tiny number of things, stir fry emphatically not amoung them. I like carrots fresh in salads and in certain soups and restaurant dishes, but not homemade emergency from frozen sir fry. I can no longer digest onions properly and I don't like them enough to go through the unpleasantness unless it's something special like the good cheese and chives bakery bread or restaurant stir fry, and even then, less is more. (I cook with freeze dried or dried and powdered garlic which I'm fine with and frozen garlic i can digest, but normal onions are right out, even frozen. I can handle a small amount of powdered or freeze dried). I don't make the rules. My body does. So I guess I can no longer buy a frozen stir fry packet for emergencies. Sigh.

Somehow my Bay leaf is missing and I forgot to restock, dammit. Also, I've not had safe for me salsa since the fridge killed the last mostly used container, and I still haven't been to that store for that, safe cup of soups, cheese, and dried mango, which are staples. Fuck! There are too many things I can't enjoy without salsa, so it's either no emergency too sick to make food soups, or no dried fruit for a month. (I'm an old and mango is both vitamin rich and something I am always willing to eat and at my age… a little fruit is a good idea every day.

I have a bunch of good things for now. bagels and cream cheese, fresh fruit, mushrooms, etc.. My fridge is restocked. I do have some cheese that survived the disaster, but half of it is messed up from it's sojourn in Squirrel's little chest freezer (I feel like if I say chest freezer, people imagine something you can hide an adult body in, whereas this was a freezer I bought when we lived in the previous apartment because storing my stuff and Squirrel meat in the tiny apartment freezer won't work. I now rather wish it WERE hide the body size, but where the fuck would we put it in this over crowded postage stamp apartment?), which means it crumbles and doesn't melt properly. (We were very lucky. Usually squirrel's meat freezer is PACKED, but it had a third empty when disaster struck, which saved the ice cream and the more expensive stuff I had like assorted vegetarian burger meats, frozen fruit, and cheese. It also meant ice.) I thought I had swiss, but maybe we used it up fast early in the disaster before it could go over.

It keeps going like this. I burned the OTC mostly on medicine, but also some fresh fruit and veg. I'm still pissed they cut OTC nearly in half this year. I'm also angry about the paternalistic "Healthy Food" requirement, which is nonsensical because bagels aren't classed as "healthy food," but cream cheese, Count Chocula cereal, and frozen pizza is, which seems kind of bullshit to me. Goth Millennial thinks it has to do with FDA subsidies and not nutrition at all, which sounds likely to me. I am ALSO pissed that the OTC is designed as a subsidy for large chain grocery store and pharmacies and also I have to pay tax on it. Fucking capitalism. It didn't used to be. It used to be at cost, so more valuable. Instead of doing the food portion like EBT, so I could buy at farmer's markets and also get seeds and starts, I have to go to the second most expensive grocery store in town and have to buy from their limited "healthy foods" list which does not involve starts and seeds. side eye

So I'm likely fucked for paying bills because of the refrigerator, and will need to wait 'til next month to get the rest of the food, and all the fresh fruit and the best vegetables are coming into season, tempting me to burn toilet paper on money on what I KNOW, are luxuries. I live a block away from a market garden that gets fresh fruit and sundries shipped fresh each morning from other local family farms and they have fruit so fresh and good nothing that nothing I've ever tasted can touch the quality. I am sleeping on sheets so torn I struggle not to put my legs through the holes and the visit to a friend in another town I'd hoped to do this month is postponed, possible cancelled.

I know, I know, this is one lost Summer for me while people are literally dying of starvation in Gaza. I'm just exhausted from the heat and the physio and the constant barrage of disasters hitting my friends one after the other. Some friends caught COVID. Goth Millennial is still fighting the unjust firing and the same employer is threatening another of my Millennials over the same bullshit. Us: "You need to tell the Union. " And the housing department is foot dragging and there this whole thing going on with a bunch of other bureaucracy stuff, and, and, and….

I still have not heard back on them raising the housing rate in August, so I can't even plan properly. Did they not get quorum? Did the protest work? Who knows? It's weird they've sent no email, right?

* Thursday a week ago dentist and hygienist were very astonished by my relaxed state during dentistry. I hadn't had time to warn them that sometimes I fall asleep before the dental dam went in ending my ability to explain. Luckily they didn't get scared as had happened before. I wasn't asleep, just meditating as is my usual practice when I'm not exhausted. Apparently even very chill patients don't normally relax at this level. I have no dental trauma or phobias. It's not that I enjoy dentistry, it's just I have no more emotion about it than I do around oil change. It's just maintenance.

No cleaner Friday, which is fine. So many people clocked out slightly late, they snatched 15 minutes here and 15 minutes there, so I am left with six visits at most to cover November and December instead of the surplus Math last summer suggested I should have. I am a bit grumpy as I generally let them off three to six minutes early.

Saturday, Goth Millennial exhausted the Tiny Terror with one of their Gothmas presents. Livia had her third oops in two weeks. I am pretty sure it's stress.

* I lost the first version of this in the crash. The Management chased all the families with kids out and most of the grad students, replacing them mostly with retirees. I hardly even got adults raiding my table this year, and one of them stole a bowl. Sigh. This is why I use cheap Dollar Store bowls. The Millennials got big candy gift bags this year.

I love the pumpkins the Millennials carved so much. I'm going to be so sad when I take them down in a day or two.

A cheerful Gen Z person turned up to Clean Saturday, and we got most of the outside display down. I really liked them. Goth millennial got the things too high to reach Saturday. We are mostly focused on the Tuesday inspection right now.

* I haven't written much about my doings lately. Enough has been going on, I forget what i've written and what I hadn't. The air outside is hot and muggy which is exhausting for me, and thus I've been even slower than usual about most things, needing more rest.

Friday a week ago, I learned that I've shrunk a full inch. I remember my mother shrinking. it was particularly obvious because while we spoke on the phone a great deal, we only saw each other every few years. They don't measure one often as an adult, so it was still a surprise. I had attributed my difficulty in reaching things to the deterioration of my arms. I think I also unconsciously associate shrinking with white hair, and the individual gray strands are still only visible in certain lights. I am fully aware of all the other deterioration. I started developing jowls this spring, for example, and I now am apt to fall over when i pick things up off the floor. I suspect i am ddeveloping the beginnings of a hump. Still, i hadn't thought about shrinking and an inch feels like a lot.

We are now two weeks in a row of no friday morning cleaner. Last time Tavy panicked when Forage delivery arrived because he KNOWS the cleanedr arrives first. He kept trying to enlist me to go search the bushes in case his cleaner was lost in there. This week, he took it more calmly.

We had a good time at the lake last Sunday, but made an essential error. We decided to try a different section and it was rockier and shallow for a much longer distance. My strategy is to hang on to a helper until in is just deep enough for me to drop down and move like one of those fish evolving to walk until it's deep enough to really swim. It took ages to get deep enough not to drag myself across rocks. The spot we'd picked for our base camp was nice though. Better sand, better view, better shade, less crowded. I'm never going in that way again, but we make keep picking it for picnics.

* I am still on a weird sleep schedule and dealing with assorted bodily inconveniences. Monday, my medical social worker patched me through to the lady the state pays to sort out that thing where you are on Medicare and medicaid and your health care is meant to be covered, but they send you bills anyway. I was up to two bills as a second came over the weekend from my trip over the mountains in February. I was on hold long enough to bake a veggie roast, but she fixed it. (I had put it in just before sitting down to make phone calls. Luckily I had it on cooking timer which turns the oven off automatically. The timer went off right when she came back on the line. It was fine. I had stuff to do on the computer).

Seriously, Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) is magic. I have no idea how to fight these things myself and it's all exhausting.

All the filters have been cleaned except on the big air conditioner that stays in it's closet until it gets really hot, which I’m pretty sure I cleaned at end of season.. The dishes are all done except the one that held the roast leftovers I had for dinner. Mr bedding is clean and fresh. The Head Millennial is off and away. The cats had a great afternoon today watching birds and dog walkers with the window open. We are already into two of their favorite shows: Gazebo Birds and new fan favorite Mrs. Robin's neighborhood. The season premieres of other favorites such as The Hummingbirds, Butterflies, and that perennial crime drama: Murder of Crows. seriously cat TV is excellent here.

* I was worried enough about the state of my lungs to call it in first thing Monday morning. I was still testing negative for COVID, but my immune system can't fight it's way out of a wet paper bag and I catch anything and everything. I got the usual lung doctor, which is a massive help, on Tuesday morning, which was when they could squeeze me in. My file is basically the medical equivalent of war and Peace and having a person up on it who had been in close contact with my much missed already GP is a huge help. I get treated like an adult who is an expert on my own body instead of having to fight foe the basics. She knows how seriously I take antibiotics. Trusty me, it was a relief to see her.

So we did the usual routine tests. I am negative for COVID and the currently dominant strains of Influenza which is very helpful to know, but not surprising with my vaccine status. I was actually feeling better at this point. We set up the standard contingencies. We generally do this 4-6 times a year. I'm hard to diagnose because of the stunning collection of things wrong with me as a baseline.

They also took five vials of blood as part of my routine monitoring, which I need for the new GP In April. new is a relative term here. If I am remembering names correctly, I think he's the guy who's been subbing in for emergencies when my doctor ius off for years, but I am bad at names, so it's possible I'm wrong. Anyway, they need to test a tone of things every year unless my numbers are bad and then i do an extra three vials at the half year.

This literally took all morning and I was running on about 3 1/2 hours sleep, plus the draws always take a lot out of me. I got another 3-4 hours sleep before the alarm. The trip to the bathroom at that point was so debilitating, that there was nothing for it but to rest and try again in another hour. My body really, really thought lying still all evening was a good idea, but I'd promised squirrel laundry, assorted plants and animals rely on me to look after them, and I'd an online commitment that was important, plus other assorted things needing doing like eating, lungs, and assorted small household things.

I did all those things, but getting up was very much a mistake. I basically spent all evening struggling and mostly failing to keep water and meds down, so that was.... not good. As of Wednesday evening, I'm still futzing with laundry from yesterday. *fingers crossed that my body is stabilizing*
