* Wednesday morning, City Guy and Honest Contractor were scheduled to come for a walk through as part of getting things going on the electrical fix. (The plan was for them to work out how bad the damage was and then I'd submit a claim to housing insurance. City was going to fund my... I think it was 2500.00 copay and the rest of the rewiring would hopefully be covered by insurance.) I stayed up for it, despite being exhausted and my legs being really bad. Getting electricity for the kitchen and bathroom was worth whatever it cost me physically in the short run.
Longtime readers will remember there was a massive delay caused first by Squirrel catching COVID at work the day after he got his booster, before the extra coverage could kick in. He was symptomatic in a way that closely mimicked my reaction to the booster early in December. We opted for longer quarantine than the five days for vaccinated people. I never caught it. yay, booster! By the time we were out of quarantine, City Guys kid had caught it in school and Honest contractor had caught it separately on a job. (Everyone's okay now.) Thus COVID ate a month on dealing with stuff.
Longtime readers will also remember that the city funded renovations two years ago overlapped the beginning of the pandemic by about a month. They wore high end construction masks, we hid in our rooms as by this point they were mostly finishing my bathroom off, and I think maybe painting living room dry wall, but don't quote me on that. As a result, the city final inspection was not entirely complete. They combined the inspection with the electrical walk through. This will come up later.
By the time they arrived I could barely walk and was using the crutches to hobble around when they needed me for stuff. They were almost done and the contractor was looking grim, on the grounds that this was likely going to be an incredibly expensive rewiring. They were impressed by the blue sparks when they tried to flick the switch in the electrical panel. He was emerging from squirrel's room where I didn't follow, preferring to sit in my office chair because legs shaky and extreme pain. It was at this point I described the initial incident back in late December in detail for the first time. (Three people handling things at the city office had heard the full thing but the contractor had only had bare bones). His face lit up.
Honest Contractor was like: It might just be a shirt behind the light switch panel in the bathroom! So he grabbed a tool out of my belt and i scrounged some office supplies from my desk area and he opened it up. At which point his was very O.o. If you know anything about how wiring works you will understand the horror the four of us felt at his discovery.
The wires had corroded right behind the switch. This is not the alarming part. The alarming part was that the low bid contractor who had royally fucked up the building from square one had, for reasons known only to himself, wrapped the grounding wire AROUND the live wire. Because of the corrosion, these to things were touching and it would arc blue every time you flipped the switch. So that was quite alarming. It is likely the same in every apartment in all three buildings. Holy Fire Hazard Batman! He sorted it out.
We have Electricity! I repeat, we have electricity!
This took all of the Wednesday and most of the Thursday spoons, but it was so worth it. Seriously, I couldn't make it out of my room until 2AM.
Thursday, I got a call from City Guy. Honest contractor will need to come back for a small pipe related revision related to the original city funded renovation. honest contractor has also agreed to fix a safety hazard in the kitchen for 50.00. The hope is to combine these missions. I've no idea when he's coming as he is a very busy man and his schedule is borked by his getting sick, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel on everything but the stove and maybe fire suppression.
So to some up, what we were all thinking was 20,000 of wiring damage is fixed. We are still in the air on fire suppression and stove. I am about 150.00 behind on bills because of Management Company charging us 160.00 to not fix the fire suppression leading and surprise medical bill, and car tabs all hitting in January, leading to late fees on a bill I haven't caught up as a result. Plus the 50.00 so no one will accidentally break a finger in the kitchen. The big housing tax bill is expected any day, but that, like a stove that can do more than boil water is on my next month problem list at this point.
We are substantially in a better position than we were in January despite a+everything, so I am calling it a win.

* Watching the women's singles event, I kept thinking about how flat and samey a lot of it was. I used to love the ladies events the same way I still love the men's events. Off the top of my head I could easily think of ten women I used to look forward to watching every time from earlier cycles.
My biases as well known. I'll take an all around skater over a jumper with privative choreography any day. I like character and artistry and I want to feel something when I watch. I'm that weirdo who loves watching the early flights at the big events as well as the top skaters. I love spotting folks just up from juniors full of potential. I love watching quirky older skaters who will likely never see a podium, but who are fun and/or magical in their expression. I love watching people who clearly love what they are doing even if they only get seen once a year at nationals or Europeans. (I would happily watch everyone's nationals if they broadcast them. At least broadcast Japanese Nationals over here? Pretty Please?).
I have a friend who'd stopped following skating this cycle, so I was bringing her up to speed on single skating stuff for this Olympics. I had this massive list of people to watch for in the earlier flights in the men's event: their strengths, their weaknesses, why I in particular liked them. I explained why I wasn't big on several of the big names as well. {Me: Grassl skates like a young Evgeni Plushenko (derogatory). See my opinion on jumpers with nothing much else to recommend them}. I had page after page of things to say about male figure skaters.
This was before the revelations about the Russian women's figure skating program and doping in particular. I explained my opinions of the three Russian skaters. None of it particularly relevant anymore, though I stand by my comparison of Alexandra Trusova to Evgeni Plushenko (derogatory), especially after her throwing an almost identical tantrum to the one he threw when even beat him in pretty much the same way. I explained that my current favorite woman single skater Mai Mihara wouldn't be there because she hadn't recovered from an injury fast enough to compete until Four Continents where she skated brilliantly. That Kaori was my second favorite by a hair and I was desperately rooting for her to get bronze, even though it would be very uphill and a bit long shot. I listed a few others I enjoy: Alysa Liu, Loena Hendrickx, You Young, Wakaba Higuchi. There are a few earlier flight skaters I'm vaguely fond of, but it wasn't what it would have been a decade and a half ago.
I watched it all, like I always do. I cheered on Mariah and Maddie. I watched with real concern as Zhu Yi skated, cheering her on with the Canadian commentators after all she'd been through and then.... sea of sameness. The Estonian had innovative costumes, which was cool, even though her skating didn't do much for me. The rest? Eh. until nearly the end.
I kept thinking about how dull it's all gotten, really, outside of a handful of performances. I think the Russians sucked all the air out of the room eight or so years ago, with there incredibly abusive and dangerous training methods. I've said before, I'm not angry at abused teenagers for living in a system designed to chew them up and spit them out in two to four years. I'm angry at the adults who built and perpetuated this system. My fury is inexpressible really, and I can only watch them skate in sorrow. I think it's the whole women's side of the sport that's been damaged though. All those young women tying to chase something impossible to catch and destructive if you do. It's like the life had been hammered out of the middle flights, and it just... breaks my heart.
I've loved women's skating my whole life. I watched Dorothy Hammill in real time as a child. My whole family wept for Debi Thomas when she fell. The part of my that wanted to dance like Mikhail Baryshnikov and was fascinated by Rudolf Nureyev, also loved figure skating. All of figure skating.
I want the sport I loved back. I want the IOC to grow a fucking spine and come down like bricks on Eteri Tutberidze, the Russian doping agency, and anyone in authority involved in the cheating and the abuse. I want an end to slaps on the wrist that only encourage them to do worse. I want clean skating and skaters who are allowed to eat and for women to be allowed to now interesting programs again. I want a sport that actually would have room for a modern Surya Bonaly without the racism and body shaming.
I want women's skating to be better than it was in the 20th century, not worse. I want to look forward to every event again like I used to.
