* I am old enough to remember how fun the bicentennial was. It was basically a year long party for History nerds, which my family all was.

They spent all this money refurbishing, expanding, and upgrading historical sites and museums. I am from Philly, which was a great place to be for it. My family went to so many things. There were all these extra field trips.

There were fairs and parades and special events. My school went all out with a historical reenactment fair and plays and things.

It was so much fun, you know? And it felt good.

They didn't go around sanitizing and rewriting history and dismantling exhibits like the Republicans are doing now.

They left in the slaves and truth about the personal behavior of the founding fathers. Again, I'm from Philly. Ben Franklin is big there. His house is there. There is a whole ass museum with inventions and these cool dioramas with dolls and stuff. Independence hall is there. They left in Ben Franklin's life long philandering and alcoholism late in life. They left in the slaves and the messy situation with his illegitimate loyalist son. I was too little at the time to understand all the sex bits, but they were still showing the film with it in as I got older.

I would rather love America enough to want to make it better instead of papering over the past and current problems in order to make is so much worse.

Instead of a nation wide year long party we get this piss dribble on the National Mall and propaganda trucks touring the South to tell lies about history and the censoring of colleges and museums and historical plagues.

Seriously, Our county fair here is so much bigger and better than the embarrassing mess on the national mall, and our State fair is exponentially better and those things are pure fun instead of boring ass nonsense with things like "a baptism tent" and dangerous stages that nearly kill musicians and guys trying to convince children that the only thing wrong with the witch trials was they weren't fascist enough. O.o Also, I'm pretty sure the Bicentennial didn't involve government officials embezzling and doing wire fraud. Allegedly, but the reporting sure lines up with everything we are seeing.

Friday I spent way too long in bed reading tainted Cup and then watching TV with assorted cats, but it would have been all right if Clawdia had not gone All Out tonight. In her defense, she's very high energy and the other cats had eaten and then gone for a nap while I made my food. She had fun following me around while I did assorted tasks and food prep. She likes to be involved. She high energy, easily bored, and aggressively social. Squirrel was in their room playing games. The sun was nearly down so there were no birds or butterflies to watch. I was all the entertainment available except a vast scattering of toys. I get it, I do, but I was really hungry and needed my meds and this meal was best eaten fresh and warm.

So I'm needing both hands to eat as components tend to escape and I'm trying not to make a mess and she becomes fixated on the reusable straw in my big glass of ice tea. So I keep having to put m food down and wipe my hand quick to move my cup. Finally she hears something outside (probably a dog walker) and goes to see and am finally eating in peace. Two bites left, I'm about to reach for the cup when I hear what turns out to be her disastrous attempt to steal the straw from the ground, which dumps the whole nearly full thing on the floor.

Fuck!

So this is a massive cleaning job because of the volume of sticky fluid and for a bonus she soiled all four sofa cover layers and everything in the vicinity including all my lung equipment. I have a protocol for this. The upsides on the cat covers on the sofa are absorbent, so I yanked the most absorbent one to pile on the spill while I quick swallowed the rest of my food and my meds. Then I got the mess towels. (These are ancient beat up towels I use for big spills because it's so much faster than a mop and less wasteful than paper towels. One of the towels I bought on the disastrous trip to action Park in the Summer of '87. The other is from the early '90's. Eventually there would be damp paper towels, but I needed to yank and clean everything in the vicinity and the towels can reduce the mess dramatically while I work on it.

It took about an hour and a half, maybe longer when you add in all the separate things needing cleaning and starting the first load of laundry, because now I'm committed to two loads of laundry with all the things needing cleaning and what was already in the washer when the sofa covers went in. (Sofa covers get priority because a naked sofa with three cats, two of them adult cat sized kittens is courting disaster.) It did not help that Clawdia insisted on "helping" and being underfoot and trying to steal the straw some more and the like. All the ruckus woke the others up and eventually Saffy also started "helping." Livia, being Livia watched worried from afar.

Bonus: my spearmint and lavender fell out of my ice tea which meant I was going to have to sneak outside for more. I waited for the kittens to be rough housing in my room as I continued to clean, then I made my break for it successfully. Except they heard the door so they were waiting pressed up against the glass watching me. I have a handful of herbs. I do not have a key. This is the only way back in.

I catch them. I squat there and catch them over and over, but they are huge and if I lift one back inside it leaves a brief exploitable opening. It goes on and on with the three of us on the threshold. Eventually Clawdia wins, which means fifteen minutes of me trying to get her back with her sister "helping," but really just waiting for the door to open so she can make a break for it.

Fuckssake!

After everyone is inside and I've had some iced tea and the air conditioner has cooled me down to a reasonable temperature, I determine that while the lung motor case is still a little sticky as I didn't get all the splashes, it and the power strip seem sound.

I have just settled in for lungs and Clawdia is running back and forth, occasionally on top of me and my hand finds the dried streak.

Fuck!

She must have got ice tea on her when she pulled the glass off the table onto where she was standing on her hind legs. At least she hadn't had time to groom, being full of crimes. So now I have to get squirrel to hear me over their gaming headphones and we have to emergency bath Clawdia. Which Clawdia did not want to do. She liked the cuddle part before and after, and we are so fucking lucky she took it as well as she did. Bathing Livia requires oven mitts and heavy coats and I still end up with deep punctures. Claw understandably kept trying to leave the sink, but she wasn't fighting like we were trying to kill her.

This ate pretty much all the spoons.

I did eventually get my lung meds. They all did finally get back to sleep in their room.

In other news, Claw, while still smallest of three is now closer to Livia's length than Tavy's.

Because Saffy is a treat thief, everyone has separate treat times. Clawdia gets a few at Saffy's puzzle feeder time, so as not to be left out, slipped to her on the sink counter while Saffy goes ham on the puzzle on the floor. I slip Livia's hers when she comes out for a snack while the kittens are sleeping.

I've been having trouble getting Clawdia enough training time with the puzzle feeder as Saffy will hear the sound of someone touching the puzzle feeder and come galloping up and shoulder poor little Claw Claw aside. This means Claw has to work fast and snatch the treat up even faster and if she hesitates, it's over. Not ideal learning conditions. Still she picked up the concept of nosing the upper compartment out of the way to get the hidden treat just fine. She needs prompting to try as the compartments are usually empty. (See Saffy speed running the puzzle feeder).

She's learned me signalling 'treat here' pretty easily. She picked up slide left compartment to the right pretty quickly once I started getting her solo tries. The thing is the feeder is symmetrical and sliding right compartment left was giving her trouble. She kept sliding right instead which just hits the rim. We started making progress though. Wednesday I was decanting a bag of kitten kibble into a container for the kitten feeding station, and they were so excited they gorged right out of the container. Saffy went and crashed out with a full tummy after, so after I was sure she was out, I lead Clawdia into the bathroom and she did all four sliding compartments herself before her sister turned up.

I'm so proud of her. She did it again Thursday and Friday, though it's still a little trial and error on direction of slide. She's got the basics, it's a matter of refining it.

The Nice Refugee Lady was cleared to work as of Tuesday so as I write this at too early in the morning on Tuesday she is in my kitchen sorting things out. She has met the kittens. After some thought Livia has tentatively decided she's familiar enough not to properly hide from and so has left her secure hide for my bedroom. Brave girl ,Livia!

* Tuesday morning, the Young caregiver came for four hours. She needs to get all eight hours in before being away for a family thing later in the month and we are desperate. This ate my morning. Amoung the really helpful things was she took me across town for my glasses and to ethical grocery. I told her it was all right to wait in the car if she wanted or shop for herself if she needed anything. she opted for the car. This is hugely helpful as that's about as far as my car can go in a trip these days and the hotter it is, the more dangerous for the car.

This basically took like two days of spoons and really fucked me up, even wth the grocery store scooter thingie. It was incredibly helpful to have someone to bring in groceries and put them away for me again. This is literally one of the things I am supposed to have an aide for. *glares hard at the Asshole Agency*

I was already getting ready for bed as she left as I was struggling to do things like stand and breath at the same time at that point.

The glasses seemed fine at that point. Seemed. So I've got progressive lenses and have have for a while. (For those of you who have good eyesight and/or are under 50, progressive lenses are like bifocals, only instead of a sharp cut between far vision and reading vision, it's more gradual). I have a very extreme prescription, plus astigmatism. I can not function without glasses and they are expensive because of things like bifocals not being covered, nor ultra light lenses, which I need because no modern lens grinder will make my prescription in anything but ultra light. Medicare thinks bifocals are unnecessary frills for some reason, also ultra lights and scratch resistance even though pretty much any senior needing glasses likely needs all three and so do a lot of people with disabilities needing glasses. (glares hard at Medicare.) Like yes, it's nice they cover most frames, but I wish they'd let me apply the part of the frame benefit i don't use towards necessary modifications to the lens. Sigh.

Anyway, what m I using for riding in a car and grocery shopping and navigating my apartment? The top part of the lenses which is for far vision. So when i get up i have cat and fish maintenance and cat messes to deal with. I need to make and eat food, etc.. Glasses are fine. They are also a really pretty green and gold like they are from the emerald city and they are very sturdy, something government frames weren't back in the day. (You used to get six choices of frame. you got glasses every two years. The glasses would break a year or less in. It was a Problem). Now you get an allowance for normal people frames, which used to be tiny and cheap, so the frames would break a year or a year and a half in and one was always patching them waiting for the two year benefit roll over. Now it's a generous frame allowance every year, but you still have to pay for most of the lenses. The glasses seemed fine. Seemed.

Then I sat down at the computer to play with my friends. It was exhausting. The blurriness and double vision gave me terrible eyestrain. i know adjustment takes time, but my vision was just so much worse. I have never had new glasses where the vision was dramatically worse than the old glasses. The headache and eyestrain were so bad I had to switch back.

Glasses aren't returnable. The money is spent. They said I should come back and they'd see what they can do.

Wednesday I dragged myself out to the optometrist despite worries about the car. The glasses re too bi. Neither she nor I noticed when we picked them out. Like literally too big for my head. So whenever there is money for Amazon again, I need to find some sort of sticky nose thing to hold glasses on? IDK. I overdrew my bank account for glasses i may not even be able to use. I got her to bend the ear thingies some more, but I'm not sanguine. I'm supposed to keep trying over the weekend and see if this is enough adjustment to make them feasible.

The old ones are blurry also for reading, but not as bad.

Fuck!

The good news is they are fine for driving as I still needed to do my library run and hit the coop on the way back for veggie burgers and tomatoes. I ended up finding four starts as well. Another tomato varietal, a marigold (I accidentally killed mine two springs ago and last year's didn't take.), another thai basil as I like to have them planted three places in case one fails (I use a LOT of fresh basil), and a lettuce start, because none of the lettuce I planted in May sprouted for some reason and the other lettuce is close to picked over. It is infuriating to be buying starts this late in season. I usually have staggered crops going gang busters at this point. IDK. The tomatoes all look to be growing well at least.

In other news, Saffy is so bright! We were given an intermediate level puzzle feeder last Wednesday. The directions said leave it open and put treats in there so they get used to treats in the feeder. Two days ago I introduced them to the idea that the central fish thingies have a treat under the cover and Saffy worked out how to knock the little fish domes out of the way, and was smooth by last night with it. So there are four flip top compartments and if you slide them over after knocking the fish domes off, you can find extra compartments underneath. I'd been hiding treats in the under compartments to use as refills. Today with zero hints, never having seen me slide anything, she broke into the underneath compartments. I left her working out how to use a hinged flip top.

She flipped them both! This one is harder or her, as you have to get your paw in at the correct angle, but she has solved the puzzle feeder entirely now. She did it in three days, clever girl.

I do not want to imply anything wrong with Clawdia. She's just way more interested in finding toys. She likes treats, but she's also really happy with he current kibble samples.

Clawdia will be playing nearby for a lot of this, watching her sister safe crack the puzzle feeder. They are social learners as a species, and I have hopes of her picking it up, either from her sister or hints from me.

Also, Saffy is growing really, really fast and is hungry all the time the way Livia was, so getting all the treats out of the puzzle is more exciting for her. When I say growing fast, she's approaching Livia's length, though not her height or solidity. (Livia is very muscular and sturdy. Saffy is currently the cat equivalent of an Afghan hound).

Meanwhile, Clawdia is a little bigger than Tavy was, but not by much. She is also a big fan of cuddle naps during lung time, which is one of the many things I've been missing.

* A friend gave me some of the sticky glasses things and they do work. I no longer thing of them as "The Torture Glasses." I am now doing a test patch on either side of my nose where I treat one with anti-acne cream and one with benadryl to see if I am allergic to the sticky nose things. (If I am, it's likely the adhesive.

When I came out of my room Saturday three of the other four mammals I live with had made So many Messes. so many. It took about an hour to clean and had to be done before I could make food. None of the messes were malicious, but most were collaborative.

* 4/24/26 10:42AM: I feel like it's too early for 4th of July fireworks, but here we are.

* As I read this really excellent book on yersina pestis, I keep catching my brain attempting to choreograph a ballet around the second Pandemic. I wish the ballet existed for me to actually watch, but I suspect I am the only one who would love this thing.

There is this whole thing with rat dancers enacting the epizootic phase with them mostly collapsing in a heap towards the end. Now picture two men dancing a pas de deux sword fight. Then a sick rat dances out of the seething mass of rat dancers all artistically dying. She pulls the Gold horde dancer away and they to an infection pas de deux. The rat dancer spins into the arms of the Genoese Soldier, and the Golden horde guy pulls the velcro on his costume and it flips down to show the buboes and blotches on the body suit underneath. The rat dancer collapses at the end of the second pas de deaux and gracefully dies, to be carried off stage by more rat dancers.

You get the idea. A group of dancers for the city, the swirl around, gather together, hiding a dancer in the middle and when they pull apart again the top costume is gone and it's the bubo body suit again. The dancers whirl in and out, one by one, infected, the first infected dancer slowly slowing and collapsing. All these little vignettes….

I know, I know, it's just for me. My brain will NOT let it go even as I read the details on the spread through the Iberian Peninsula.

* Wednesday I did the library run and they did have cat grass at the cheap grocery this time as I discovered on the way back. Livia's eaten the batch I grew her down to the nubbins and the new crop isn't up yet. She had the blerps twice while I was gone, poor thing.

I got back in time to do lungs before the "webinar" about new state laws in effect this year and next for HoAs. Management lady: "We hate this law." Me, rubbing my hands gleefully: I bet you do. It requires you to give proper notice, tell people living here what you are planning to do and it requires votes on anything not an extreme emergency. You know like the fucking gate we don't need and don't want that I told them wouldn't work, but they wasted the emergency funds on that should have gone to dealing with indoor waterfall damage and getting us up to fire code.

Pretty much all the abuses last year are now illegal. They kept complaining about how time consuming and onerous it was to let us vote on things effecting our lives. Fuck those people.

Next Tuesday I need to get my shit together to fight to save window plants and lights. I hate these people so much. so much.

* I ended up staying up super late last Saturday to finish fixing things after the catastrophic Firefox link loss. Really I should have put it aside for the next day, but it was really annoying me. I have things rough sorted again, and the work I put into fine sorting for Thursday lost. Sigh. Also lost was most of the Weaponized Judiciary/Push back section, the Trump-Epstein, and I think about half of SCOTUS and some things from categories usually lower on the aggregate page. Sigh.

And we are getting biannually inspected again mid April. At least my part of the Apartment is still mostly clean from one of the annual inspections in March. If it feels like I get inspected a lot, you are correct, as multiple agencies do separate annual inspections, plus the two fire/vent/etc. ones..

I still haven't done the stupid housing bureaucracy. I still need to do that one desk that's been a mess and half in boxes since the Great Contractor Disaster. Once fire inspection is over, I need to migrate the things we tucked in my room for annual inspection back out to the main room. The garden needs a big reorganization before things start growing in earnest. We already have some early lettuce and the neighborhood cherry trees are in bud. The ones out where they get the most sun on the street further towards the main road have started blooming. It's time.

I tried putting the scratchy thing Tavy was using as a chaise lounge on the living room window bench off and on for most of the last year of his life (A gift from Art and Techie Millennials) On my bed in hopes of Livia taking an interest in it. It's not her size. she like scratch boxes best, but it likely still has his scent and I was hoping maybe she'd take an interest in scratchy things again. It just upset her, so I took it away again.

* Monday: I finished the Housing paperwork. I am concerned I did it wrong, but there is nothing to do but turn it in and hope.

In related news, I've four errands to do downtown.

Update: Disabled parking was full again, but at least there was something a block away without a slope and I could sit in a chair to wait my turn, the line being literally one guy. I HAD done the paperwork wrong because the directions weren't clear, and they were just as clearly used to it, as she had one of those cool white out rollers right there. Asked several clarifying questions, whited out the wrong answers and write in correct ones herself. You have to be elderly or disabled to be in this program, so I bet most paperwork needs revision given the wording and complete lack of clarifying directions attached.

Anyway, I had inevitably turned up with Dramatically More Documentation than required. I always bring anything they could possibly want to bureaucracy, because if you turn up without something it's a big delay and maybe you can't get benefits or the like as a result. In this case ambiguous wording ended up with me bringing a thick packet when a couple pieces of paper would have done. Better safe than sorry though. (I vaguely remember this happening each re-up. They needed a lot of paper in the beginning when I first applied, but re-up they really only need the application plus a couple of things).

Anyway, I got rubber stamped and it'll be fine most like. This is one of those things, like federal income taxes where my complete lack of taxable income streamlines the shit out of things. It means no special deductions and the like because I'm already at the lowest possible income level so why bother.

I managed the other items fine. I should be able to pay housing tax end of week if nothing monstrous happens to social security and I've a leg up on document organizing for two exhausting bits of expected April bureaucracy.

I hate this. It is exhausting and stressful and time consuming.

In other news, I found a bunch of bad inter-collations after browser recovery. Sigh.

* Monday was a symphony of frustrations. I also had four separate calls from the insurance company that is trying to fuck up my medicare while I was asleep. They have a lot of auto dialers and no matter how many I block. They are getting desperate. I lost several hours of sleep as a result.

I still had to drag myself out for library. I'd promised myself the special seasonal potato cheddar bread as a treat, but it was sold out.

Came home to find housing threatening bureaucracy in the mail. I really fucking hate that they replaced the perfectly functional automated system at SSI with shitty AI designed to try to force me to use their broken website I can't get into and a cell phone I don't have.

The auto tax bill never came, and I am nearly out of time. They have made paying online impossible and have closed the place I used to go in person to pay. I don't understand why they couldn't A. send the bill in January like usual. B. have a website that lets you log in. Oh there are lots of boxes you can click and type into, but they require you to receive an email to actually log in and they do not send the email. Yes, I checked the spam filter and trash.

* We've been prepping for the annual inspection where they decode if I need a nursing home whether I want to live in one or not. I do not, of course, and I hate it, the intrusion, the inherent initialization. New Millennial was an absolute Superhero with the cleaning, and Techie Millennial was also a help.

Squirrel and I did get trash and recycling out in the middle of the night after the rain stopped. (It was pouring in that soak you in seconds way earlier).

I am exhausted. Was it five phone calls or six today? Two of them were real and important. One was a thing that may actually be a medicare thing, but I don't trust them because they are on that sketchy bubble and won't go off script to answer a simple question. (Sometimes real medicare does that and I once spent months hanging up on a legitimate thing because they were not willing to clearly say who they were and why they were calling and wouldn't go off their long rambly script. So I kept hanging up after two sentences until a supervisor called and said please don't hang up, identified herself clearly and said what she wanted. Just saying). The rest was yet more insurance company scammers. I have added a third voice to the list of ones that have been harassing me often multiple times a day for over a month. (Insurance Companies can afford a LOT of autodialers and tricking the elderly is a lucrative business). Luckily, the new one has a distinctive voice, so it should speed up the hang up and block the number process. (The other two are local accented white lady voices with very common pitch and delivery for around here. I learned to distinguish them mostly because one was and asshole and the other easy to discourage.) I also got one with a different voice and trying to trick you sales pitch, but the scam was obvious enough I could hang up and block one sentence in. Her voice was also distinctive, which will make the hang up and block process faster. I wonder if this is a different insurance company also trying to scam seniors or the first company trying out a different script. Sigh.

And then there was physio and cleaning and starting the stupid housing bureaucracy paperwork. (I was too tired to tackle the complicated second page directions, but I have Squirrel started on getting their documentation, so setting it aside for when my brain wasn't mush made more sense, since neither their documentation nor mine will be ready until likely next week). Then more cleaning, including futzing with the fish tanks so I could get the filter parts off the table ahead of inspection. The filter for the 20 gallon is kaput, which is not a surprise given its age and the fragility of filter propellers. (I miss when I could just switch them for one salvaged from another with a dead motor, but that company went out of business ages ago). At least the 50 has the filter back in after a cleaning. The tanks really need changing and I need to move some plants from the 50 to the twenty, but at least this is progress. Both tanks are dirt (not stones), with air pump and live plants. Going an extra week without a change will be okay. I just could not be hauling that much water around and be dealing with all this cleaning this past week and physio and at least three extremely low spoon days. I did at least top them off a couple days ago, and pop in a little extra stability.

All of this would be so much easier if people would just let me sleep instead of constantly trying to trick and/or threaten me into fucking up my Medicare for their profit.

As I wrote this it was less than too hours until inspection Thursday morning and I mostly just want to go to bed, but I can not, especially as I should really try to sort out the car tax thing after inspection because truncated ours. Sigh.

* The nurse practitioner/ inspector was about 4 hours late without calling.

When they were half an hour late, i did lungs. When they were more than an hour late I brushed my teeth and went to bed in my clothes, on the grounds that she might turn up. My money was on reschedule, but I hate keeping someone waiting while I try to scramble into my clothes.

Livia was already warey because all the intensive clening,buclothes in bed is a dead give away, and she is a clever girl and keen observer of human behavior. She was up and checking the window, ready to run for herhide at every odd sound from ouside or upstairs. I couldn't sleep anyway between this and phone scammers.

Nurse/inspector called I think 11:24AM, asked if she could come in 15 minutes. I said yes. My day was blown anyway, and we'd just have to clean all over on a reschedule. People are often late here because they can't find close parking or thy pick the wrong building. The buzzer doesn't always work, so some people do not come unless they have sense to call us. This late, I suspected a medical emergency at whoever her first visit was with. This was correct. I did not ask if she shipped her lunch break to squeeze me in, but I don't doubt she did.

I was grateful to be squeezed in and not mad at all. Someone could have died if she hadn't sorted it and it was exactly the sort of situation you can't leave until everything is stabilized and care is passed on to someone else. Like I said, I'd guessed something like this was what was going on and I don't waste angry in the absence of Malicious. I definitely don't get at angry about Kind and at no point did I think I'd been blown off without cause.

The upshot is I was too tired to be driving downtown for car tax crap I didn't get to bed until nearly one and have had Not Remotely enough sleep. I have massive headache and I am not enough butter on too much bread.

She was nice though. She skipped the cognitive exam, "You are intelligent, cheerful, and clearly your memory is fine."

Squirrel is now in a battle with the people doing the partial pay for work related injury time people to get the stupid piece of paper we need for the Housing Bureaucracy stuff, but they ae being diligent about it.

* Friday, I stayed up to do the car tax thing. Disabled parking was full, so it went from a walk the length of the building situation to most of a mile each way walking. I couldn't breath and I very nearly collapsed. So I'm laid up from that.
