When I got to my first college to be a philosophy monk, guys were all abuzz about "Surely You're Joking."

I intended to read it eventually, but I kept shying away instinctively. I think I subconsciously picked up on what time of guys were into Feynman.

(There was an exception, who used to also tell his dad's Feynman stories from when they were working together. These stories were amusing in a way that the Feynman Bros quoting the book weren't. He wasn't a Feynman cultist, but rather someone with stories to contribute about Feynman in Feynman based conversations, if you get my meaning.)

* At bedtime Monday morning I noticed some weird things with my vision in my right eye. I looked them up and it sure sounds like a retinal tear. (I know, don't trust Web M.D., but shit is sudden, extreme and weird. I thought of alternate explanations, but I liminiated all of the non-medical ones. Fuck! Of course when everyone's off for holidays.

I have a scheduled appointment, I think for Monday. I should likely wait up and hope they are open today because it's getting worse.

* I was so exhausted I completely missed the Mummer's this year. :(

For those following the Special Assessment Saga, it was a good thing I raised and paid rent on top of what they took. Assholes still charged me a hundred dollar late fee because they fucked up December accounting. If they had taken rent instead of the third special assessment chunk without my knowledge or consent causing overdraft fees, then everything would have been paid to them on time, but I didn't know they were doing it until it was too late to fix, so here we are down an extra hundred for January with car fees and things coming due later in the month.

It will likely be all right. I will need to talk to Squirrel about it, but it will probably be all right.

I hate how extreme the punishment for doing nothing wrong has been in 2024, and it just keeps happening.

* I had so much fun with the dead podcast the back half of December. I ran out of episodes and find myself craving more.

It's an anthology series via Bloody Disgusting and the George A. Romero Foundation, so zombies.Like any anthology, so are more to my taste than others, but they were all worth listening to. They are shared universe, and do occasionally reference each other, but they also jump in time between stories and you could pretty easily listen to each story in any order. (A story is four episodes). The cast is diverse as one would expect given who is making these. The sound design fills me with horror and delight as is expected from Bloody Disgusting. For real, the zombie eating people sounds are far more awful than seeing gore on screen would be, even knowing how they were made.

Something I wanted to mention is the zombie sounds. Walking Dead is such a big thing and has been since the first episode debuted that their rattling hiss zombie vocalizations tend to be what zombies sound like now. Older media did other things: Moans, silence, even words. I have even heard a roar in one fascinating low budget one. These days though? Rattling hiss tends to be what one hears even in a lot of non Walking Dead Properties.

I like how human they made their zombie vocalizations in The Dead. I like the slow transition from a human sounding sick and in pain getting less and less articulate to what sounds a lot like me levering myself out of bed on a bad pain day and hobbling around. I like that it reminds one how human the newly turned look and sound. I like that it sounds like they could start speaking again at any moment, that the sound design of the intro encourages one to strain to catch words that never come during the episodes proper.

This thing is beautifully done and addicting, even when I know exactly how things are going to go. (This isn't a dis. Most twists in anything I will see coming).

* So here's what's going on: I can't remember if I told y'all they had an opening at the hospital, so they moved my exploratory procedure up to next week. This is a good thing, given how quickly I'm deteriorating. It is quite possible in two weeks I'll be properly medicated and feeling better, assuming I don't also have cancer. I'm going to have a bunch of medic al stuff next week just generally, just like this week.

In other news, my glasses were ready a week early, so I am adjusting to bifocals again. These lack the line and are disconcerting if I move my head wrong, but are a dramatic improvement over the emergency non-bifocals I've been wearing and today was easier than yesterday, so I've hopes of being adjusted soon. These are by far the nicest glasses I've owned ever.

In other news, three of the millennials came over for an outdoor chargen picnic, held in accordance with current CDC guidelines. At some point in June my local friends will all be out of COVID jail. (Currently Squirrel, one of the Millennials, and I are all completely done. The others are half vax).

* I kept getting awakened Friday. Except for another beg from the Police Union, they were all important calls, but having long conversations, fetching my calendar etc., is not good for quality sleep.

Saturday I was too uncomfortable to sleep much. We did go and buy way too much juice and restricted diet/sick people foods for me to eat. I'm already in restriction, but I go up a level Monday and it gets worse from there. I need to sort out transport to the hospital, which is meant to be free and easy on my health plan, but the 24/7 number didn't connect. Like no error beep or message. No Ringing. Just dead line. Mmmmm... thanks? I spent like an hour looking for the direction sheet to get the number that went nowhere. I then tried typing in the title from the direction sheet which led me to another non-working number. O.o I added more search terms, found more directions. The first number it listed tried to sell me direct TV. WTF!?! The second number sounded correct, but says they are only Monday through Friday which is clearly not correct. My options are now call them Monday and see if they can give me the correct number or call my Social Worker and see if she has it. I don't understand why they would send me a directiion sheet with the wrong number and why my health plan site also lists a fake number.

squirrel will collect me after the proceedure and is trying to get off work. Caregiver Millennial has agreed to come and look after me in the evening. We plan to make good lemonade and sweet tea to store in the fridge on sunday, amoung other things.

I apparently have two different medical appointments at opposite ends of the day Monday. Fun!

* Monday was a nightmare. a scammer woke me at 7:59, fifteen minutes before the alarm. I spent a stupid amount of time trying to straighten out medical stuff on the phone. I spent the morning on medical stuff and other errands, all involving long waits, most of it standing up in stunning pain. I do not resent the lady with the baby taking one of two waiting room seats. I do resent the other six able bodied people who monopolized them during my 45 minute wait to drop off my specimen. I am visibly disabled, with a crutch and was obviously in massive pain, but I guess those able bodied people needed those two chairs more.

I went home to eat and lung and the like, then went out again for more medical stuff. Luckily the pre-proceedure COVID testing was drive through and very efficient. I am exhausted and in terrible pain. I get to do more medical stuff tomorrow. Sigh.

* Friday: Our HOA agreement allows seasonal decorations (within certain boundaries). So I was like, "Hey Squirrel, it occurs to me that PRIDE and particularly Stonewall Day are in fact holidays, so the HOA can't stop us. How would you feel about hanging a PRIDE flags up?" Because you don't cover your front window with a massive progress flag without consulting your roommate. He was really into it and wanted to get his own flag for his own window on top of the shared common space one. (I would love the chevrons, but flags are expensive so me getting a 45ish +shipping queer flag, yes I priced them and did the sourcing a monthish ago and it was hard ass things kept selling out or being sold out, on my own was too much money. Maybe next year). After some consultation we worked out which one he wanted and did the order. We did hang them in plenty of time for Stonewall day and they've been up a couple of weeks. My plan was to take them down on the 5th which is in margin by the letter of the rules, and damned if I don't want that thing up for the 4th for obvious fucking reasons. I generally don't rules lawyer, but i will for a good cause.

So when coming back from library curbside Monday I spotted the noticed the HOA had hung on the lobby door with passive aggressive highlighting on the sentence about not hanging political signs in the windows. I smiled, because I'd been waiting to see if they would give me an intent to fine notice, because my plan was to call them right up and point out that people are allowed to hang Christmas decorations, which given the whole bullshit war on Christmas rhetoric is a political issue. All we did was hang decorations celebrating Stonewall Day. Are you saying my identity is a political issue? Not a good look for the HOA in my deep blue college town.

Remember, I'm the person who put on clothes at 11:20PM on a Sunday night in the mid-90's to stomp a long block west to yell at a frat party to stop blasting 'Rockin Robin on repeat because some of us have jobs and need to sleep, with my terrified partner trailing after me, convinced I was a bout to get killed in a brawl with an entire frat and if I really was doing that, he should probably come have my back. They turned it off, chastened. More recently a few years ago I went and stood next to a Lady being screamed at by a mob anti-choicers and yelled back at them with her. I may pick my battles, but I'm all the fuck in when I fight.

So nothing happens and the days pass with no intent to fine notice. Squirrel's parking moves at the month change and he used that door coming home from work this morning and saw the notice. Him: This is definitely aimed at us. Nothing else has changed in the complex. Me: Oh yes. I spotted it Monday. If they want me to take it down they are going to have to explicitly tell me they don't consider PRIDE and Stonewall day real holidays. Him: They won't do that. Me: In which case I win. They either have to fight me over it or live with me ignoring their passive aggressive general notice.

The sign had to have gone up between last Monday afternoon and the Monday before, when I last used that door, which means I feel okay about taking my flag down on the 5th as planned. I'll still be within the HOA's own rules and nearly a week doesn't look like capitulation. Especially when they go back up next June. squirrel likes his so much It's going to be a wall hanging in his room and he's thinking about seeing if he can get a flag big enough to use as a door curtain for his room when there's more money, a project of which I approve. (We use shower curtains to create an airlock/privacy while leaving the doors ajar for cats.)

* Sunday: It will likely come as no surprise to you all that the Imperial couple do not react well to fireworks. Elder Kitty didn't mind them all that much before her hearing started to weaken and these days with her dementia, she only really responds to familiar stimulae that directly affects her in some way. Tavy and Livia though? A whole other story.

I fed the girls before it all started, which was a wise move. Livia had returned to the bed to hang out with me by the time of the first explosion. She clearly considered running, but I was calm and the bed room is generally invader free, so she decided to hang with me despite misgivings. Tavy came running in and jumped up on the bed to see iif we were scared and if this was a full on hide situation. He saw me lying there all calm and Livia nervous but holding it together and decided the "Hide on the bed in comfort as a group" plan was better than retreat to the secure hide. Her nerve nearly broke when the roman candle barrage happened on the other side of the gazebo, but they did really well, considering the both hate loud noises and unexpected happenings.

It's been rainy and cold for days, which I am grateful for since it discourages maskless idiots from congregating to breathe virus on each other. Bonus, it really cuts down on illegal firework related fires. It was still loud for a while, but it wasn't nearly as bad as usual when we get a week of explosions. We had a few on the third and then the usual nonsense in the complex, but it stopped early.

Taking the long silence for the end, I went and made dinner and did the usual chores. After I ate, I was just settling in for lungs and Tavy had just climbed on intending a pet and a cuddle nap. (He really likes lung time cuddle naps and he's especially big on them lately because he doesn't sleep on me as much with the machines going). His forth paw had landed when someone set off a massive mortar outside the window and he panicked all the way to his hide.

There followed another half hour or so, but they were done by midnight instead of going until dawn, so it's a huge win. They really did ride most of it out on the bed, and while they needed a lot of extra attention all night they had clearly recovered by dawn.

I've taken the PRIDE flag out of the front window and folded it away for next year. I even changed the 30. (Plus some MUSH Chargen). What I didn't do is much aggregate. Ooops.

* So the Imperial Couple get crunchy treat from me of an evening, but LM gets soft treats from Squirrel separately. I want to be clear that they all get treats. LM still has her teeth and will nibble at kibbles, but won't eat anywhere near enough for her to survive on. She hates senior kittie dental treats and prefers the type I used to give the cats when she and her brother first came to live with us, so that's what squirrel gives her. She also really doesn't like to eat with the rambunctious youngsters. This is accommodation; not cruelty. Still, she does like the occasional crunchy treat too and we try to encourage her to eat hrd things when she's willing to do it, so I like to slip her one when I give mine treats if she's visible without be encroaching on Squirrel's room, since I only cross his threshold in emergencies. If she's not around, I'll hide one where Livia isn't likely to sniff it out and give it to LM next i notice her wandering past.

Last night, I was doing this, and was making a small scale fuss like cats enjoy, and livia got all excited. "The Hu-mon said 'Good Girl!' I'm Good Girl! That must mean something for me!" She came barrelling over, but LM had already gnoshed the treat, so all poor Livia got was Pettins and a Good Girl fuss of her own, as she had had her share earlier. The Heartbreak! The Cruelty!

I am for real sick, which is very annoying. This week, for the first time, Livia stopped running away in terror when I cough. She' a cat; she emphatically doesn't like it. She will wake from her nap and peer worriedly at me. If i keep coughing, she makes a rather plaintive meep. If I still inexplicably continue coughing she wanders off to the other room to continue her nap. Progress. I'm not ill enough yet for cough until I pass out, or wake up because I'm suffocating, both of which are notoriously unnerving to cats, but this is for sure progress, what with me having a serious degenerative lung disease that will likely kill me one day.

I still haven't got the flat decorations up, and I can't handle oils, so I can't do sale prep for another round of BPALs. Puttering is all I can really manage, and I'm pasted together with a lot of medication.

* Me responding to someone on Tumblr who seemed to not know a really basic thing about how things work:

You are flat out wrong. The FBI does background checks for judicial nominees all the time. It is literally part of their job. On previous occasions, like the Tower and Thomas confirmation hearings, where more information emerged after the initial hearings, new more focused background investigation was ordered from the FBI to investigate the allegations, after which the hearings were reopened.

This is the normal procedure in cases like this. Either the President or the Congress can order the FBI to do more background checks. The judiciary committee could also hire an independent non-partisan investigator. Republicans are refusing to do allow of those things even though that is the normal precedent.

Every time you hear a Republican politician claim FBI doesn’t do background checks, they are lying. Chuck Grassley was on the Judiciary Committee during the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas Hearings in which the FBI did exactly the sort of background check we are asking for. He is lying and he knows he is lying every time he says the FBI doesn’t do background checks.

UPDATE: Flake and Murkowski have joined the Democrats in wanting an FBI Background check, and the FBI now has a week to investigate the allegations.

Which is AGAIN literally part of their job.

* My torso muscles are finally healing to the point of constant dull ache instead of serious pain, but I am struggling with low air quality and the deep wet cough that comes with. I am making good progress on Domestic news, though I'm not caught up. The World news queue is massive and I will keep trying to catch up there also. I am sorry about not keeping up properly the last couple of weeks.

* Seanan McGuire's Sparrow Hill Road is an intricate thing. It looks like a series of loosely connected short stories about a particular character, but as one reads it gradually becomes clear that each story is like a beautifully glazed tile in a mosaic and one one stands back, the real picture appears. It remains one of the cleverest designs for a novel I've seen, special and irreplaceable.

The sequel, Girl in the Green Silk gown is not like that (I'm not sure anything else COULD be exactly like that, and Ms. McGuire had the wisdom not to try), being in a more standard novel format, but it is beautiful and intricate and does this really clever thing with the whole of the story being in a way a mirror reflection of the last, more traditionally mythic part. It is clever design in the same way as the first book was, just as intricate and the whole design only really being visible in retrospect without trying to mimic the specific way the first pulled it off. If Sparrow hill Road is a mosaic or a quilt, this is... recursion in a mirror perhaps? Or a fractal?

I love these characters. I love the world design. I want to clutch both these books to my heart and at the same time thrust copies at friends and strangers on the street.
