My experience is they mostly just log for or against whatever it is, but if it's a rare case where they want arguments, tailor them to your target critter.

Contact your Senators and make sure they stand firm against dangerous nominees like Gabbard, Hegseth, Patel, and RFK Jr.

(That goes double if, like John Fetterman, your Critter is talking about bipartisanship over what's best for constituents and the country.)

If you have a democratic senator try to convince them to hang tight as a party in opposition instead of giving ground that will hurt people or the country.

If your senator is republican give it a try anyway. Argue national security, law and order, or please don't bring back polio or the like as is appropriate.

Contact your House of Representative member and beg them to stand firm against bills such as the ones intended to gut social security and Medicare in favour of tax give aways for billionaires and corporations and anything attacking bodily autonomy. (If they are republican go hard right if you have to give an argument.)

We need our Congress Critters to did their heals in and make them fight for every inch.

This is extremely good analysis and her perspective is valuable. I grew up with the Murnau and have watched it countless times since I was little. I've seen the Herzog not nearly as often, but I did see it within a year of it's release and watch it periodically as well. I was a kid when the Herzog came out and didn't really appreciate it until some point in my 20's.

I don't agree with quite everything in here and I think the new Nosferatu has a lot of things to say, particularly in the way it is trying to talk about gendered violence. At the same time? I was very disappointed they lost the dance macabre like sequences from the Herzog, because those were important and I think would have been relevant to us for the reasons this commentator enumerated.

For the record, Goth Millennial and I really liked the new one, but the audience we saw it with reacted in a way that suggested a lot of people are deeply uncomfortable with what's on the screen and aren't willing to engage with the complexities and ambiguities. I particularly liked how the movie was both doing it's own thing, but also clearly in dialog with the other two versions, much like I experience the Herzog in relation to the Murnau.

All versions of Nosferatu have problems. Addressing one set can open up a new set. That is true here. It was true with the Herzog.

Honestly? When the commentator was discussing the ways people had trouble engaging with the Herzog when it was new, reminded me a bit of sitting in an audience where half the people were experiencing the film in a way completely different from the way i process it.

I am wondering if discomfort and debate are not things essential to doing Nosferatu right. I think it's part of why something so influential on future filmmakers rarely gets remade along with the whole antisemitism problem. (You can't remake Nosferatu without trying to decide how to handle the anti-Semitism of the original. It's a tricky, tricky thing. Same with Dracula. hundred plus year old media can be landmines.)

Anyway, this Nosferatu comparison piece is excellent and I really appreciated the perspective and context.

* 7/4/24: I took Goth Millennial to the good (Cheap, employee owned) grocery store. We generally shop together and we both needed a lot of things. I need to restock a whole lot of stuff thrown out or given away in the Great Refrigerator disaster. So I'm zooping along in the riding cart because my hip joints hate me and my broken toe is healing extra slow and we kept having this thing where I was like, "Oh! We need to grab X." GM: but we HAVE X. Me: It was old and nearly empty, so I threw it out when we emptied the freezer. Them: sad face

The new refrigerator is a lot smaller and less disability friendly, It does, however, WORK and it's mechanisms are simpler so let's hope it doesn't break once every 1-2 years like the old one. A kind friend got me a new britta as we gave away our sink attachment, filter tank, and emergency jug when we moved here. The water is so cold and delicious, far better than the old fridge water. Finding anything in it is a drama, though, especially with the freezer. I was trying to get cheese for meds snack and spent ten minutes searching. I thought we'd saved emergency frozen broccoli for yesterday's dinner from the Great Fridge Disaster, but if we did, it was buried in my hurried restock, probably amongst the frozen fruit for smoothies. Sigh.

Related note: I searched every stir fry veggie pouch in the freezer section of the good grocery store and all of the mixed pouches had onions and/or carrots and/or cauliflower. Sigh. I do not like cauliflower except in a tiny number of things, stir fry emphatically not amoung them. I like carrots fresh in salads and in certain soups and restaurant dishes, but not homemade emergency from frozen sir fry. I can no longer digest onions properly and I don't like them enough to go through the unpleasantness unless it's something special like the good cheese and chives bakery bread or restaurant stir fry, and even then, less is more. (I cook with freeze dried or dried and powdered garlic which I'm fine with and frozen garlic i can digest, but normal onions are right out, even frozen. I can handle a small amount of powdered or freeze dried). I don't make the rules. My body does. So I guess I can no longer buy a frozen stir fry packet for emergencies. Sigh.

Somehow my Bay leaf is missing and I forgot to restock, dammit. Also, I've not had safe for me salsa since the fridge killed the last mostly used container, and I still haven't been to that store for that, safe cup of soups, cheese, and dried mango, which are staples. Fuck! There are too many things I can't enjoy without salsa, so it's either no emergency too sick to make food soups, or no dried fruit for a month. (I'm an old and mango is both vitamin rich and something I am always willing to eat and at my age… a little fruit is a good idea every day.

I have a bunch of good things for now. bagels and cream cheese, fresh fruit, mushrooms, etc.. My fridge is restocked. I do have some cheese that survived the disaster, but half of it is messed up from it's sojourn in Squirrel's little chest freezer (I feel like if I say chest freezer, people imagine something you can hide an adult body in, whereas this was a freezer I bought when we lived in the previous apartment because storing my stuff and Squirrel meat in the tiny apartment freezer won't work. I now rather wish it WERE hide the body size, but where the fuck would we put it in this over crowded postage stamp apartment?), which means it crumbles and doesn't melt properly. (We were very lucky. Usually squirrel's meat freezer is PACKED, but it had a third empty when disaster struck, which saved the ice cream and the more expensive stuff I had like assorted vegetarian burger meats, frozen fruit, and cheese. It also meant ice.) I thought I had swiss, but maybe we used it up fast early in the disaster before it could go over.

It keeps going like this. I burned the OTC mostly on medicine, but also some fresh fruit and veg. I'm still pissed they cut OTC nearly in half this year. I'm also angry about the paternalistic "Healthy Food" requirement, which is nonsensical because bagels aren't classed as "healthy food," but cream cheese, Count Chocula cereal, and frozen pizza is, which seems kind of bullshit to me. Goth Millennial thinks it has to do with FDA subsidies and not nutrition at all, which sounds likely to me. I am ALSO pissed that the OTC is designed as a subsidy for large chain grocery store and pharmacies and also I have to pay tax on it. Fucking capitalism. It didn't used to be. It used to be at cost, so more valuable. Instead of doing the food portion like EBT, so I could buy at farmer's markets and also get seeds and starts, I have to go to the second most expensive grocery store in town and have to buy from their limited "healthy foods" list which does not involve starts and seeds. side eye

So I'm likely fucked for paying bills because of the refrigerator, and will need to wait 'til next month to get the rest of the food, and all the fresh fruit and the best vegetables are coming into season, tempting me to burn toilet paper on money on what I KNOW, are luxuries. I live a block away from a market garden that gets fresh fruit and sundries shipped fresh each morning from other local family farms and they have fruit so fresh and good nothing that nothing I've ever tasted can touch the quality. I am sleeping on sheets so torn I struggle not to put my legs through the holes and the visit to a friend in another town I'd hoped to do this month is postponed, possible cancelled.

I know, I know, this is one lost Summer for me while people are literally dying of starvation in Gaza. I'm just exhausted from the heat and the physio and the constant barrage of disasters hitting my friends one after the other. Some friends caught COVID. Goth Millennial is still fighting the unjust firing and the same employer is threatening another of my Millennials over the same bullshit. Us: "You need to tell the Union. " And the housing department is foot dragging and there this whole thing going on with a bunch of other bureaucracy stuff, and, and, and….

I still have not heard back on them raising the housing rate in August, so I can't even plan properly. Did they not get quorum? Did the protest work? Who knows? It's weird they've sent no email, right?

* Wednesday's plans fell through for a bunch of nobody's fault reasons, but at least the annual curtain cleaning got done, along with a bunch of necessary errands and the like. I was exhausted and ended up going to bed for a few hours before the Thursday dose. (It went up again. I'm fine, but it takes a lot out of me). I had planned to get my COVID boosters, but there is a local distribution delay. I am rescheduled for Saturday the 30th, which is far less convenient, but there was nothing to be done. It'll be my first Moderna shot; I've had Pfiser every time previous, but apparently the Pfiser delay is a lot longer if I don't want to cross the mountains and do like an hourish of driving in my ancient car to a crappy little town I've only been to once and don't know my way around.

Waiting is simpler and cheaper as I need to make this half tank last, so I will wait.

no one was letting me sleep Thursday. It was that thing where I was having trouble sleeping because of the pain being so extreme, and when I finally started to drift off, the phone would ring. Rinse and repeat. One of them let me sleep a whole hour, which was exciting. By the time we got to the 5-7th calls, I had reached a state of grimly amused. Then I woke up choking, which hasn't happened for a while and is likely to do with the Thursday shot and me running out of a side effect mitigation med I can't afford to replace until the 1st, by which time there will be no more shots until the new clinic opens.

I can't remember if I wrote about the two doctors getting a new office in the new clinic that opens in October, but they aren't scheduling yet. Let's hope the gap isn't so big I have to start over.

I did finally get a little REM sleep, but not much. Then I completely borked the bad shoulder trying to do physio. The arm didn't want to and it's bad enough I had to break out emergency meds and use the sling. Grr.

* Sometimes when other Olds are complaining about young people and their phones, I think about the Student Union at my first college in the days just before email happened to ordinary people.

It was a very small school and the student union was basically a very large basement, with an eatery, a mail room, and a bunch of seating areas. The mail room was central and four times a day they delivered mail. You might ask, "How was there enough mail to deliver four times a day, when the post office delivers once a day?" Most of it was junk. You got the real mail once a day and the rest was fliers and things for activities, messages from Profs or other students, that sort of think. Most of it went right into the conveniently placed recycling bins.

I admit, like everyone else, I'd turn up for the big distribution of outside mail as you had to catch package delivery when the window was open, and given the poor taste and nutritional value of the crap in the cafeteria, something edible from home was a Big Deal.

Four times a day though, the students would gather if they weren't in class in the seating areas closest to the mail boxes. Some benighted souls would hover, hover, right in front of their boxes, listening excitedly for the squeak of the sort cart and the rustle of the student workers on the other side, eyes fixed on the tiny box window.

These people knew perfectly well that the other three deliveries were 80-90% junk mail. They sat or stood, desperate as baby birds waiting for the worm anyway.

People haven't changed, they are just waiting for a ping instead of a squeak and rustle.

Human nature is human nature. I think a lot of people from before email and texts are forgetting that they too have run to the mailbox when they saw the USPS truck or mail person put stuff in, or dove for the letters lot hoping for something good, or hovered by a campus mail slot knowing odds were it was all or mostly trash. I try not to forget that, even though I stopped hovering after a week or so, even though if I check my email more than once a day it's a lot, even though I don't text. Who the fuck are we too judge? We've all done the analog version even if we aren't currently doing the digital and I feel like a lot of people who were email users but not frequent texters are pretending we all didn't refresh email like 8 times a day in the '90's.

* Saturday we wore ourselves out with necessary errands. I needed algae wafers for the plecoes and some special girl food to tide Livia over. They had her shreds but not her kibbles there. (As I bought the last two bags of kibbles at the local last month, she likely has about a month of kibbles left, but with today I think the bird flu may have fucked the cat food supply and for Livia, the choice is a small number of turkey dominant limited ingredient foods or going back on the even more expensive prescription stuff. There are three more places I could try left, but gas is low and two of them are further out and one is super expensive.

All this is made worse by Livia having what is likely a psychiatric crisis, but could be early signs that her renal system may be failing again. Let us hope it's psychiatric, because that won't kill her and I think she's doing a little better tonight. There have been a lot of visitors and schedule disruptions, plus me being sick. That's a lot of stress for a cat who super extra is bad at change and gets stressed easily. Her urine remains normal, but her high anxiety behaviors aren't that different from the behaviors the time she almost died when she was a little over a year old, so I worry. She was eating almost normally tonight, so I'm still in the likely stress camp. *fingers crossed*

Anyway, OTC was right next to the way too hot pet supply store. I somehow miscalculated the tax again and also forgot surgical masks, of which I have nearly run out. @$&#!

The good cheap ethical grocery is right there, so I used the motor cart because most of me wasn't working well at this point. Inevitably, I forgot some things, but there were tiny oranges on sale and I have partially restocked some essentials.

My nails are doing almost okay for the first time in ages, so Goth Millennial painted them a subtly sparkly purple for me, just in time for social stuff with some of the Millennials.

I'm still not really caught up from all the spring car repairs. I am already seeing way more things I can't not buy like gas, litter, and probably kibbles and we are moving into the super expensive part of the year (September-January), where I have a bunch of extra things I can't not do like the oil/radiator thing my car now needs every six months, tabs, housing tax, Gothmas season). I had such high hopes when the COLA went up in January, but between the car and the extra electrical costs... yeah.

I'm not drowning. Not yet. It's been two straight years of everything breaking. I could sure use a year of nothing breaking. This was the first summer since the start of the pandemic I didn't need surgery in the summer. Let's hope the car and apartment follow suit.

* Last Sunday, we went shopping. By we I mean Head Millennial, Techie Millennial, Techie's New Roommate, and me. It was insanely hot and muggy, which we had no way of guessing when planning the expodition the night before when it was a perfectly reasonable temperature for mid-September in this micro-climate. Yes, I know it's October. *shakes fist at the Koch brothers and every other rich person who bought climate denial during my life time to boost their profit margins*

But it had been early September sane temperatures for a week. We'd already ripped out the living room air-conditioning the previous weekend so we could start Gothmas Phase I. (All I've managed is most of the ornaments on one tree.) We were not expecting Surprise late July in Alabama. This means not only was the trip to the Good Grocery (Excellent Prices, Solid selection, Employee run) sticky hot, exhausting, and full of human obstacles, but the apartment common area was oven hot when we got home. It is supposed to be cool, windy, and sporadically rainy. Fucking Climate change.

Now it is Gothmas Phase II, of which I've managed the easy stuff not involving string lights and ladders, but it's enough to start lighting of an evening outside. head Millennial helped me get the gear out of the storage closest, then focused on hand making us lasagna to eat while watching our beloved resident Alien and sipping nice cold floats.

I have already spent two thirds of my food budget for the month and I have my birthday party to get food for mid October. Sigh. I did score eight dollars of fruit from the Market Garden before they closed for the season in the morning of their very last day right after open. I really miss the other fruit and veg stand as they generally stayed open through Halloween, but I really don't blame two people in their '70's for deciding that organizing produce from a bunch of small farms was too damned much.

For the record, the market garden is produce from one farm, super fresh, as it's harvested right there and placed on display throughout the day, but the selection is smaller than the one that was like a farmer's Market only every day and with one check out. Seriously, the Market garden is magical and really close to where I live now and they have a good selection given the size of their growing space. I just wish there were two options instead of one. It's not like there is any shortage of fresh fruit and produce in this place as we are a part off the country that supplies other areas with the same, so we are spoiled by good, reasonably cheap, fresh food. Also, the major artery for the west coast means more southerly fruit makes it up here quickly at reasonable prices.

I never forget we are incredibly lucky to be living were food is. I grew up in an area where the only biking distance food stores were a tiny corner store and a WaWa (convenience store). A real grocery store was an hour round trip not counting the actual shopping, and my Gran was living in a Germantown food desert because she wasn't willing to leave the neighborhood where she was born in 1889 and she had a bad arm, so my Mother and Grandmother took it in turn to take her grocery shopping once a week. I still measure food availibity in things like travel time and spoons and how much a person on foot could reasonably carry for how many miles, because those were the calculation of more than half my life and they still are for my Millennials.

Still, the tiny end of season selection and the last day sign made me sad.

Anyway, we have food. I've two meals worth of eggplant lasagna in my fridge and one in my stomach, and it's starting to look a bit Gothmasy around the Cat Asylum.

For those not used to the lingo, the Gothmas season starts September 1 and runs to Jan. 7. Phase one is interior Gothmas decorations like trees and Halloween Town. Phase 2 is exterior Halloween decorations, Phase 3: we leave everything up inside and pull the Halloween specific stuff from outside while leaving lights, gourds, etc.. Phase 4: yet more interior decorations and more lights everywhere. It is a disability friendly way to do things and is cheerful for the dark of the year. I got in the habit for my late longtime partner Skye as even though he was a happy atheist, the social bits of the winter holidays really mattered to him and he missed his family. It is all very, very Goth to look at since he only specifically theistic things were gifts from assorted relatives and these are black and purple Halloween trees decorated with things like science fiction and Halloween ornaments and Halloween Town stays up throughout. Phase 5: everything sorted and back in boxes, stowed away for next September.

We call it the Cat Asylum, because back just before the turn of the century, Skye and I took in two rescue cats with serious psychological and resulting behavioral problems. It is asylum both in the original sense of a safe place, a refuge; and in the sense that it could get pretty wild for the first few years. For the record, they both lived to their late teens despite health issues related to their abuse and abandonment. Mache recovered and was the best Queen I ever met and a wonderful, wonderful cat by every measure after the extremely rough first 2-3 years. hector suffered from nightmares, anxiety, panic attacks his whole life, but he got so much better and was loved his whole life after that first terrible year. his bad spells went from every day to only once in a while, and he had a really, really good life. It is still the cat asylum because the the current cats also have issues and this is a safe and supportive environment for them.

* Monday I was still exhausted and in pain from Sunday shopping and the weather changes. It was also still July in Alabama humid hot. Still we dropped of my car after squirrel's game so they'd have it Wednesday morning.

Tuesday, the temperature switched back to mid-September, which was much more manageable. The car... things were a lot worse than expected when they cracked the Beastie open. There is a small part that breaks about every half decade, one of many known design flaws for this make and model. So they did that and a few other small necessary things on top of the every ten month stuff that stops the engine from bricking itself. This car is in it's mid-twenties and was poorly designed to start with. Most of the important bits have been replaced over the years, but parts are harder and harder to find. Still we keep pasting it back together because I'll never likely have money for a replacement used car. This made the repair nearly twice as expensive as I expected.

Anyway, it turns out another system needs sorting out preferably in the next month or so before critical damage happens. This has been such an expensive year starting with last November car repairs and including things like the apartment electrical system, the oven dying, , other car repairs, my teeth, my surgery.... Sigh. I'll know how badly I'm fucked next week. I am sure I don't have 150 for replacing bits of the car's fluid system. I'm pretty sure I just spent the money for second Biggest bill on the extra bits and bobs today.

I really need this coming year to be both surgery free and less expensive. Could my body, my car, and my home stop falling apart for even a little while so I can catch my breath? I've had four surgeries in two years which i feel like is a lot.

Bonus: My body threw a whole ass four hour tantrum which left me wrung out like a wet dish towel, but spasm aftershocks all night long meant there was no point in going to bed. Sigh.

* The barometer has been swinging wildly back and forth. The hot and humid is the worst thing for my lungs and general functioning. I remain exhausted and in a stupid amount of pain. My sinuses are a nightmare and need mitigation every couple of hours, my As is screaming at me. everything I eat makes me sick, which is a thing that happens when it is muggy hot. The trees on my street are very confused. some of them haven't started to turn, others have a few patches of orange, others are in full orange or red autumn mode, others still have already lost their leaves. We need a good cleansing rain from Alaska.

On the upside, I discovered I'd only spent half rather than two thirds of my food allotment for the month, and the third store actually had my special crackers. I think the global supply issues must be pretty bad right now what with Putin being the monster he is. Two of the four grocery stores in the last week had tons of empty shelves, and the better of them looked like pre-disaster panic shoppers had swept through some of the sections despite the only disaster here being the fact that we're a month into the rainy season, but it's barely even drizzled in couple of months. Oh and the wildfire smoke still blowing in over the mountains from the inland fires. We are protected here from the kind of disasters that destroy towns, but not from climate change itself, which is so obvious to anyone who's lived here a reasonable length of time that it is hard to grasp why it's not obvious to everyone.

* The air quality and extreme humidity remain a serious problem not just for me, but even people with properly working lungs. It often smells like burning and the sky is assorted shades of wrong still from inland fires. I know it's that and not a pathogen, because I am dramatically better when I'm under filtration for a while, but when I come out I start to stuff up again and itch. I can see a really dramatic difference in my lung function too. Something must have been burning very badly Saturday night. By morning it smelled like a tire fire.

Techie Millennial came over Saturday to visit and decorate trees. It was a good visit. Head Millennial called out, and was exhausted when they came in Sunday. I honestly think the air quality is a lot of the problem. We did not finish outside. There is still lighting that needs to go up inside and Halloweentown is all over the place, but it is so much more cheerful now, and we are getting people slowing down to look already.

Unfortunately, some of these people are dog walkers, to the Imperial couple's dismay. Sunday morning a fairly new to the complex German Shepard took serious exception to Tavy and the owner just let the dog stand there barking for a while. Sigh. Most of the dogs in this complex are really well behaved. People know how hard it is to find pet friendly housing in this town, so make an effort, but i feel like if your dog is that agitated because cats live in an apartment, maybe keep walking instead of standing around staring while you dog barks for seven minutes at a now empty window, while the cats that live there hide in terror. just saying.

I do not blame the dogs in these situations; I blame the humans.
