* I was getting better. I swear I was. I started the second z-pac Thursday because while clearing, my lungs weren't clear. I also kind of felt crap Thursday evening, but in the expected ways given the war inside my body.

Ad then I had an ICU dream. These aren't nightmares. No really. I get them when my lungs are bad and the dream is about going on oxygen and having actual appropriate medical care. Other Americans will see why this is kind of an exciting concept. People in developed countries will likely be like: isn't that every day?

Anyway, I half woke up and thought, "Huh, that's odd. My lungs aren't bad enough for me to be dreaming about supplemental oxygen," and went back to sleep.

This was a mistake. I bet you can see the mistake already, but in my defense: half asleep and when I went to bed I was projecting them drying up by Monday.

I woke up with really bad lungs. Like worse than the day they started me on the second antibiotic bad lungs. I moved a little and ended up having to eject a cat and lean over the side of me bed in case I vomited from coughing bad.

My the time I got it together I was too late for the clinic call in hours, apparently. Like they were till open, but o longer answering phones.

Long time readers will know that I general get a virus and then an opportunistic bacterial lung infection moves in while my immune system is extra distracted between fighting off the virs and it's main goal of eating large sections of my body under the beleif that most of me is a foreign object.

Except this is clearly bacterial or it wouldn't have been responding to antibiotics. Which means odds are i just pulled the rare opposite scenario. What have I had to do a lot of the past three weeks? Go to assorted Doctors despite my real concern about infection risk. <.< >.>

Nothing could be done except wait for me to reach live people at the poverty clinic. I'm maxing out my lung treatments.

I think I need a COVID test. If I have it, odds are squirrel and I are both dead.

Update: as of 9AM, I have spent an hour so far hunting for an open Covid test slot before Tuesday. *digits cruciform*

* I watch a lot of zombie movies. Like most of them at least once. One'll slip by here or there only to be noticed a few years later and I'll have to wait for some to come up somewhere I can watch free, but I watch them all, even the terrible z-grade ones. I've been dreaming about zombies in one form another since I was literally three, before I knew the word. IDK, they resonate with me for a bunch of reasons, some of which I've written about before.

I have watched aquatic NAZI zombies, stripper zombies, lederhosen zombies, crappy racist pre-Romero zombies. I love Romero and always will. I love Cemetery Man. Train to Busan is now my favorite, but seriously Dawn of the dead in particular was formative in a bunch of ways. I even watched the zombienado thing the sharknado people made.

I may have found one of the worst zombie movies ever made last night. I mean, at least Zombienado and the zombie strippers had some camp value and the self awareness to know they aren't making a good flick here, just making a flick period, so they just had fun with it. It was a terrible, terrible thing, that made very little sense, couldn't pick a tone, was consistently horribly racist despite being made in 2014 and randomly casually homophobic, and had possibly the stupidest, most annoying collection of characters ever assembled in a zombie movie. Also it was simultaneously vehemently christian and anti-christian in a way that just kept confusing me. It seemed to be trying to say something about religion, but the whole thing was so incoherent, I can't venture a guess as to what.

When I say stupid, I mean I literally could not figure out how this collection of people could survive an hour in a zombie apocalypse let alone a year and a half. These zombies are attracted to noise, but they never shut up and like yelling and screaming all the fucking time. All of their ideas are terrible and frequently deadly. The teenager keeps wandering off by herself. they keep putting limbs and faces next to infected people. they don't pay attention to undead they can see coming towards them because their annoying petty personal dramas are more important than not getting bitten. They keep splitting up and getting attacked.... Like seriously, how'd they make it this far?

The two supposedly bright characters really, really weren't. One was a bunch of ableist tropes (both mental and physical) in a man suit. The other? Was supposedly a scientist, but was only marginally brighter than the others. If this movie wasn't from the UK and six years old, I'd have thought he was a trump CDC political appointee. Like get this: They did mass inoculations of the military with an experimental vaccine they had not bothered to test for safety and efficacy. They had no tests to see if there were any side effects apparently before they lined them up and dosed them with the stuff. What could go wrong? Dude!

So I have to ask, how did someone with 45's level of mental impairment get put in charge of a biological warfare vaccine development program of this magnitude? How did he get the credentials to get hired? What muppet let him handle level four pathogens? Did not one person anywhere in the process suggest at least one proper phase 3 study?

And his decisions stopped making any sense at all once they ran into literal Sweet zombie Jesus. No really. There is a literal zombie Jesus and what little sense the character had in their heads falls right out along with the already minimal coherence to the plot.

I just can't with this film. I keep trying to work out what any of the characters were thinking or why they did any of the things they did and I can't. I still have no idea why zombie Jesus' powers worked the weird inconsistent way they did, just as I can't explain WTF they had a live action first person shooter style intro tacked on at the start of the movie and what if any information it was meant to convey.

They'd have been better off killing off these people as an intro and then made another better movie with characters that I actually wanted to watch doing things that made sense instead of bickering loudly to attract zombies and occasionally literally feeding themselves to zombies on purpose.

Do not watch Zombie Resurrection.

The plan is to institutionalize wealth and social inequalities by over riding teacher assessments in favor of a percentage system that harms students from less privileged backgrounds.

Look, I’m American, but I furious on behalf of both teachers and students. They are not treating these teachers like professionals who know their kids and how to do their jobs. They are fucking over students for classicist bullshit reasons, and none of it takes into account natural variation

And seriously, I've DONE grading for kinds who missed a portion of the term. you just use the grades you have. It's not that hard. Like you can't reasonably penalize a kid because their parents moved during term. Teachers know how to do this.

Grading on a curve based on three years previous performance? A, not a big enough sample size, and B institutionalizes inequalities and punishes kids on the bubble. Also, in real life out in the field, you get better and worse years. One class will randomly have 10 kids with serious intellectuals challenges and an extra dollop of asshole kids, or a toxic combination of personalities. Another class will get an extra helping of gifted or just a magic social dynamic.

There is shit you can't predict, like that one kid with learning disabilities who happened to look like Peeta in the Hunger Games movies (Which weren’t out yet, but that’s pretty much what he looked like only younger) in the 8th grade I student taught who was sweet and charismatic and the bright girls all took turns tutoring him so he was performing above what you'd expect even on stuff he did completely independently, or that kid with learning disabilities and massive executive function stuff who really loved his paper topic and worked incredibly hard on it and pulled out a grade in spring in English that might have looked like cheating compared to previous terms, but I was literally standing right there when he wrote it. Statistics can't account for me randomly being really into Latin senior year and getting near perfect scores on every test because I finally got a teacher I liked enough to actually work for instead of resist.

Using statistics leaves out the chance of the exceptional and punishes middle of the road kids who really pulled out the stops for whatever reason. Maybe they randomly got a higher percentage of kids who were really good at math or extra motivated for some reason this year.

My entire grade was notoriously nightmarish for every teacher we hit. We had an above average level of assholes and future sociopaths and they'd work together to torment teachers in often creative and psychologically adept ways. (Not me personally, but my grade in aggregate). As a group we caused several nervous breakdowns and drove several people out of the teaching profession entirely. Our grades weren't average either because, you know massive disruption. We also had a lot of kids with trauma (see assholes and future sociopaths and add in some incredibly psychologically abusive stuff from staff, targeted at already traumatized or marginalized kids). There was a ton of attrition in grades 4-9 because of mental health stuff, as in kids being pulled out for health and safety reasons sent to less traumatic and violent prep school. Would it be fair to judge the grade ahead or behind based on my classes scores? Would it be fair to average all three of those grade sets and impose a curve based on them on the grade below them?

Statistical average doesn't prove individual performance.

Or maybe,just maybe, we should just the fuck give kids a break because there's a fucking pandemic on.

* I really do think it's a normal cold/sore throat, but I called it in like a grownup Thursday morning.

The cats are still avoiding the bedroom in the wake of us medicating them last week. Wednesday Livia decided that she can sleep in my office chair when I'm not using it. This has been a long cherished dream of hers, but Elder kitty was super possessive of the chair and kept chasing her out of it when she was a kitten and she stopped trying a few months after she came to us. It's her chair now. I've been forced to establish new, dramatically less convenient feeding ritual as she's still too distressed to eat her meat if I feed her normally, but I've had four days in a row of compliance so this is what we're doing now.

In elder Kitty's last month, Squirrel bought her a new cat bed that warms up when a cat sits in it. She was resistant to it and only used it a few times. After she died, he handed it over to me on the grounds that someone ought to get good use of it. I've tried it in various spots around the common area. I've started to get success by putting it on the window bench. Livia had a nap in it earlier in the week, but it turns out she prefers sleeping next to it using the soft fuzzy edge as back rest, sort of like napping with a friend who doesn't randomly try to vigorously groom one's head while one's trying to sleep. Tavy discovered it Thursday and slept in it for hours. They moved over to the sofa back spots where they can be closer to me once I settled at the desk, but I think the cat bed may be an Imperial acquisition after all.

* This is a really bad one. It's a massive fire and explosion in Beirut with a high casualty count, which as of this writing was rising. There is no proper ambulance service and the private services were already swamped with COVID victims, so people are having to find ways to transport the injured themselves. There is a lot of speculating, so I'll check in later when there is firmer intel. I had to cut off my watching of the coverage for mental health reasons. * Livia is trying more new things! Once when she was young and had a very bad cold, she slept on me for hours, but she never did again. Until today. She spent all day on top of me and when I finally came out of my room, squeaked at me extensively and tried to get me to go back in. She has discovered she likes sleeping on me after all. It may possibly be the best thing ever.

This evening, Livia just discovered that if she sits on the pettin throne the human will pet her, and it's way more comfortable than squeezing herself into the Tavy sized spot next to Klaus. Bonus? No competition from Tavy.

I bought that padded stool for Mache when she was getting old. It's the perfect height for an arthritic kitty to pull herself up on, and is pleasingly round and padded for old bones. LM discovered it in her declining years and made good use of it. Now Livia is the third girl to discover it's comforts and the bonus pettins that come with.
