* Last Sunday, we went shopping. By we I mean Head Millennial, Techie Millennial, Techie's New Roommate, and me. It was insanely hot and muggy, which we had no way of guessing when planning the expodition the night before when it was a perfectly reasonable temperature for mid-September in this micro-climate. Yes, I know it's October. *shakes fist at the Koch brothers and every other rich person who bought climate denial during my life time to boost their profit margins*

But it had been early September sane temperatures for a week. We'd already ripped out the living room air-conditioning the previous weekend so we could start Gothmas Phase I. (All I've managed is most of the ornaments on one tree.) We were not expecting Surprise late July in Alabama. This means not only was the trip to the Good Grocery (Excellent Prices, Solid selection, Employee run) sticky hot, exhausting, and full of human obstacles, but the apartment common area was oven hot when we got home. It is supposed to be cool, windy, and sporadically rainy. Fucking Climate change.

Now it is Gothmas Phase II, of which I've managed the easy stuff not involving string lights and ladders, but it's enough to start lighting of an evening outside. head Millennial helped me get the gear out of the storage closest, then focused on hand making us lasagna to eat while watching our beloved resident Alien and sipping nice cold floats.

I have already spent two thirds of my food budget for the month and I have my birthday party to get food for mid October. Sigh. I did score eight dollars of fruit from the Market Garden before they closed for the season in the morning of their very last day right after open. I really miss the other fruit and veg stand as they generally stayed open through Halloween, but I really don't blame two people in their '70's for deciding that organizing produce from a bunch of small farms was too damned much.

For the record, the market garden is produce from one farm, super fresh, as it's harvested right there and placed on display throughout the day, but the selection is smaller than the one that was like a farmer's Market only every day and with one check out. Seriously, the Market garden is magical and really close to where I live now and they have a good selection given the size of their growing space. I just wish there were two options instead of one. It's not like there is any shortage of fresh fruit and produce in this place as we are a part off the country that supplies other areas with the same, so we are spoiled by good, reasonably cheap, fresh food. Also, the major artery for the west coast means more southerly fruit makes it up here quickly at reasonable prices.

I never forget we are incredibly lucky to be living were food is. I grew up in an area where the only biking distance food stores were a tiny corner store and a WaWa (convenience store). A real grocery store was an hour round trip not counting the actual shopping, and my Gran was living in a Germantown food desert because she wasn't willing to leave the neighborhood where she was born in 1889 and she had a bad arm, so my Mother and Grandmother took it in turn to take her grocery shopping once a week. I still measure food availibity in things like travel time and spoons and how much a person on foot could reasonably carry for how many miles, because those were the calculation of more than half my life and they still are for my Millennials.

Still, the tiny end of season selection and the last day sign made me sad.

Anyway, we have food. I've two meals worth of eggplant lasagna in my fridge and one in my stomach, and it's starting to look a bit Gothmasy around the Cat Asylum.

For those not used to the lingo, the Gothmas season starts September 1 and runs to Jan. 7. Phase one is interior Gothmas decorations like trees and Halloween Town. Phase 2 is exterior Halloween decorations, Phase 3: we leave everything up inside and pull the Halloween specific stuff from outside while leaving lights, gourds, etc.. Phase 4: yet more interior decorations and more lights everywhere. It is a disability friendly way to do things and is cheerful for the dark of the year. I got in the habit for my late longtime partner Skye as even though he was a happy atheist, the social bits of the winter holidays really mattered to him and he missed his family. It is all very, very Goth to look at since he only specifically theistic things were gifts from assorted relatives and these are black and purple Halloween trees decorated with things like science fiction and Halloween ornaments and Halloween Town stays up throughout. Phase 5: everything sorted and back in boxes, stowed away for next September.

We call it the Cat Asylum, because back just before the turn of the century, Skye and I took in two rescue cats with serious psychological and resulting behavioral problems. It is asylum both in the original sense of a safe place, a refuge; and in the sense that it could get pretty wild for the first few years. For the record, they both lived to their late teens despite health issues related to their abuse and abandonment. Mache recovered and was the best Queen I ever met and a wonderful, wonderful cat by every measure after the extremely rough first 2-3 years. hector suffered from nightmares, anxiety, panic attacks his whole life, but he got so much better and was loved his whole life after that first terrible year. his bad spells went from every day to only once in a while, and he had a really, really good life. It is still the cat asylum because the the current cats also have issues and this is a safe and supportive environment for them.

* Monday I was still exhausted and in pain from Sunday shopping and the weather changes. It was also still July in Alabama humid hot. Still we dropped of my car after squirrel's game so they'd have it Wednesday morning.

Tuesday, the temperature switched back to mid-September, which was much more manageable. The car... things were a lot worse than expected when they cracked the Beastie open. There is a small part that breaks about every half decade, one of many known design flaws for this make and model. So they did that and a few other small necessary things on top of the every ten month stuff that stops the engine from bricking itself. This car is in it's mid-twenties and was poorly designed to start with. Most of the important bits have been replaced over the years, but parts are harder and harder to find. Still we keep pasting it back together because I'll never likely have money for a replacement used car. This made the repair nearly twice as expensive as I expected.

Anyway, it turns out another system needs sorting out preferably in the next month or so before critical damage happens. This has been such an expensive year starting with last November car repairs and including things like the apartment electrical system, the oven dying, , other car repairs, my teeth, my surgery.... Sigh. I'll know how badly I'm fucked next week. I am sure I don't have 150 for replacing bits of the car's fluid system. I'm pretty sure I just spent the money for second Biggest bill on the extra bits and bobs today.

I really need this coming year to be both surgery free and less expensive. Could my body, my car, and my home stop falling apart for even a little while so I can catch my breath? I've had four surgeries in two years which i feel like is a lot.

Bonus: My body threw a whole ass four hour tantrum which left me wrung out like a wet dish towel, but spasm aftershocks all night long meant there was no point in going to bed. Sigh.

* The barometer has been swinging wildly back and forth. The hot and humid is the worst thing for my lungs and general functioning. I remain exhausted and in a stupid amount of pain. My sinuses are a nightmare and need mitigation every couple of hours, my As is screaming at me. everything I eat makes me sick, which is a thing that happens when it is muggy hot. The trees on my street are very confused. some of them haven't started to turn, others have a few patches of orange, others are in full orange or red autumn mode, others still have already lost their leaves. We need a good cleansing rain from Alaska.

On the upside, I discovered I'd only spent half rather than two thirds of my food allotment for the month, and the third store actually had my special crackers. I think the global supply issues must be pretty bad right now what with Putin being the monster he is. Two of the four grocery stores in the last week had tons of empty shelves, and the better of them looked like pre-disaster panic shoppers had swept through some of the sections despite the only disaster here being the fact that we're a month into the rainy season, but it's barely even drizzled in couple of months. Oh and the wildfire smoke still blowing in over the mountains from the inland fires. We are protected here from the kind of disasters that destroy towns, but not from climate change itself, which is so obvious to anyone who's lived here a reasonable length of time that it is hard to grasp why it's not obvious to everyone.

* The air quality and extreme humidity remain a serious problem not just for me, but even people with properly working lungs. It often smells like burning and the sky is assorted shades of wrong still from inland fires. I know it's that and not a pathogen, because I am dramatically better when I'm under filtration for a while, but when I come out I start to stuff up again and itch. I can see a really dramatic difference in my lung function too. Something must have been burning very badly Saturday night. By morning it smelled like a tire fire.

Techie Millennial came over Saturday to visit and decorate trees. It was a good visit. Head Millennial called out, and was exhausted when they came in Sunday. I honestly think the air quality is a lot of the problem. We did not finish outside. There is still lighting that needs to go up inside and Halloweentown is all over the place, but it is so much more cheerful now, and we are getting people slowing down to look already.

Unfortunately, some of these people are dog walkers, to the Imperial couple's dismay. Sunday morning a fairly new to the complex German Shepard took serious exception to Tavy and the owner just let the dog stand there barking for a while. Sigh. Most of the dogs in this complex are really well behaved. People know how hard it is to find pet friendly housing in this town, so make an effort, but i feel like if your dog is that agitated because cats live in an apartment, maybe keep walking instead of standing around staring while you dog barks for seven minutes at a now empty window, while the cats that live there hide in terror. just saying.

I do not blame the dogs in these situations; I blame the humans.

This captures perfectly the two biggest things I endlessly try to explain to people about Periodization .

1: Periodization is inherently arbitrary and depends on the specific thing you are studying and exist because things like papers, classes, and books need a beginning and end date. You can’t jam all of history into any of these things, so you need to draw some arbitrary lines, but a person studying Japanese History will draw a different set of line than someone studying say German theology than someone studying Central American archeology.

2. Periodization is only useful insofar as it’s giving you some degree of useful information to the people trying to study the same sorts of things, and the people doing it don’t take it to seriously.

* My body is struggling with the wild swings between too hot and muggy and chilly that are typical of season change. It will even out when the rains settle in properly. I have hopes tomorrow may be the day from the feel of the air at dusk.

In the meantime, I am Frankensteining painfully about the cat asylum. Not only did the Wednseday errands wipe me out, but annoyingly, I had cascading torso spasms starting right at dinnertime. Which happens. I think barometric changeability spiking the AS pain and the late August meds change dovetailed. I think of these things as the "One thing too many" syndrome. I saw it early enough to start mitigation before the first wave hit and a hot epsom bath and the meds straightened me out, by about 9ish, which trust me is fast. Still, it is hard on the system.

I missed the market garden by a literal two minutes at errands end. Dammit.

* Weird History Geek Moment: Watching Lucy Worsley handle 14th Century Court rolls. Me flashing on all the time and energy I spent with magnifying glass, a bright light on a bendy thing trying to decipher the facsimiles of a different set sent by an archivist friend of my late advisers as a favor. The handwriting on the Walsham le Willows set looks so much better than the ones I worked with. She had way better lighting than I did in my dorm room and she still needed a magnifying glass too. It's just weird seeing anyone putting stuff from my specialty on TV.

The family they are studying... I had one like that too in my set. I was so relieved to see them still making trouble in the 1350's....

Unfortunately, she doesn't understand that a 'fine for brewing in breach of the assize' is a form of tax. No really. They didn't have a proper income tax system yet. They had a system for taxation to raise money for war, but it required a special vote in parliament at this historical period. They had rents for peasants. (I don't want to get into the issue of extraordinary poll tax votes here, as it's not relevant to the issue of taxation right before the coming of the Great Pestilence aka the first wave of the plague in England).

So you have these peasants who pay rents for their land in money, goods, and or labor (unfree peasants aka serfs pay rent in labour on top of the other stuff. Free peasants only pay money or in kind); but if you are the lord of the manor, how do you make money off other types of economic actively in the village? You do get fines when they break laws, right? You can fine them for taking rushes from the marsh or taking stuff out of the forests, but not everyone does that. You know what everyone needs? Bread and ale! So you pass a law making brewing and bread baking illegal and you assess a small fine for it.

You're likely picturing a tavern, but that's not how things work in a rural 14th century village. A lot of women take it in turn to brew ale, as they don't have preservatives yet, and it's hard work requiring equipment and ingredients, so generally it's your mid-level peasant women. In the sort of village I was working with you had approximately two batches a week. (The village she is talking about in the Black Death episode is bigger than my biggest village, so YMMV). When a new batch is ready you set out your benches and people come by to buy it for home or to drink there. Meanwhile, a different woman elsewhere in the village starts up a new batch for drinking at a later date.

You can tell which women are the most popular brewers by the size of the 'fine' aka tax on what they sold.

There was usually only one big bread oven (Not counting the manor house or monastery) for the village size I was working with, so whoever ran that paid the baking fine. Again, don't be picturing a bakery in the modern sense. People would mostly bring their own dough or at least grain and pay to get it baked, but any extra work the baker was doing was extra money so.... Yeah. You brought your dough and they baked it for you, because most homes just had an open fire pit and a hole to let the smoke out. So your baker had a bigger fine for baking than any of the alewives would.

It's an income tax, not a brewing moonshine in a hidden still, type situation.

So if there is dramatically more brewing going on the Autumn before the Great Pestilence arrived in England on the strength of rumors from france, compared to the previous years, it means they are running through ale batches faster, so more households are taking it in turn at a faster rate, so the fines would be higher and some of the infrequent alewives are likely taking noticeably more turns. You CAN see that sort of thing in the records, if you know how to look, but you need to take a longitudinal approach. One set of Court rolls can't tell you a damned thing about statistical change.

I'm not saying it didn't happen. (I haven't read these specific Court Rolls, which were just starting to be studied when I was finishing, and once I left academia I stopped reading this sort of article. They weren't published yet and I couldn't get my hands on them, basically, since the researches who did have hands on them rightly reserved first crack). I'm saying her methodology as described doesn't make sense. She's an early modern specialist who has said repeatedly in the episode this isn't her area. It's possible her consultants skipped a step explaining it to her, or she didn't understand and skipped a step. In either case, why didn't they edit it out or film an insert that wasn't inaccurate? Had they no fact checkers? How did they even get into Court Rolls at this depth if they had no specialists involved? I have questions.

The thing is? Most of the stuff in this one does make sense. I caught some small issues, like generalizations based on this specific court roll set that don't match practice in other villages (EX: some places fine male head of household and some fine the person doing the specific activity) and the like, but this is like 100X better than the crap the so called "History Channel" puts out about the middle Ages. I just... I have questions.

As always on these occasions, I would like to extend my condolences to any poor grad student forced by their research topic to read my research. *Shudder* Seriously, let's pour one out for the 14th century English peasant studies scholars and their embroidery lights and magnifying glasses.

* The Serpant Queen: I’m all in with the Catherine De Medici characterization, but I wish they hadn’t decided to go heavy handed mean girl with diane de Poitiers. Making her historically accurately subtle and intelligent instead of a cliche would have created a far more interesting product over all.

I agree that this is the best thing they’ve done in this line and worlds ahead of the White Princess and the Catherine one, which I rage quit over them having her brag about her deflowering when historically the whole point was she claimed to be a virgin later. (No offence to the York/Tudor series actors. It’s the writing that’s the issue).

I expect telescoping and small changes and character combinations and the like in my historical adaptions. I understand that fiction’s going to fiction. i understand anachronisms for humorous effect. What I do want is for the characters based on historical people to be recognizable interpretations of them, if you follow. The lion in winter is an example of doing that that. tight writing, all the people make sense as interpretations of the historical personages they represent, completely fictional scenario. The old Tudors series is a classic example of completely tossing out the actual personality of the main character Henry VIII in favor of something less interesting and relevant. (I can believe Johnathan Rhys Meyers is a generic king, but not that particular king, Throwing physicality out entirely, which they also did, he acts more like and Edward I than a Henry VIII),

The Serpent Queen version of Catherine de Medici is fascinating and a fair interpretation of the historical figure. (There are a bunch of ways to approach her, but anti-heroine is right up there on the short list). The do a lot of the same things with history the Borgias series did, as in we are watching fiction loosely based on historical stuff with a bunch of changes, telescoping, etc., but my concerns are things like how will they be handling Mary Queen of Scots, given them deciding to do Diane dirty on characterization.

It’s fascinating, beautiful designwise and way bolder than the previous STARZ Tudor stuff. I am watching it with more interest than I’ve had for anything like this in some time. I love them leaning in hard on Catherine’s self agendaed intelligence, and I think a lot of people complaining about her character design wouldn’t be if they were looking at a male anti-hero, but I also think there are valid complaints to be made in other areas.

Even if this is hands down the best entry in this series of series so far.

Which is why I voted for Tsongas in the Democratic primary back in 1992 and voted for... I think it was Nader in ‘96. (Not 2000, obviously because I am not an idiot. Not coincidentally, I believe the President shouldn’t be one either). I’ve been against Bill Clinton for literally decades. However, last I checked 45 has bragged about sexually assaulting women, 30 some odd have accused him, and that one rape case was going to trial and would have if he hadn’t won the electoral college, escalating the death threats, etc.. He also liked looking at underage girls while they were naked, which is eww.

I also have been quite vocal about predators on the left and support them losing their jobs and public offices. If you’d read any of my stuff you’d know that. Ex: Weinstein and Franken. You can do a search under my tagged entries and I know you’d find my posts against Al Franken. My money IS where my mouth is; is yours? I do not thing sexual predators should be in Any Office, whether the Presidency, the Supreme Court, the Senate, the Congress, or any other office. I don’t think they should be in charge of things like the local supermarket or Burger King either.

I say Investigate them ALL, and fire and wherever possible indict as many as possible.

Right now though? There is already one Sexual Predator too many on the Supreme Court. Let’s not have two.

I would like to point out that Kavanaugh has also recieved and used stolen information and has repeatedly committed perjury in his first confirmation hearing for the judgeship and in this set of confirmation hearings both around his work with Ken Starr and regarding his drinking. He’s also screamed Conspiracy theories, threatened a host of organizations and an entire political party, which shows extreme bias, displayed misogyny in his behavior towards women senators, and just generally showed that he hasn’t got judicial temperament. Even without the Attempted Rape, he should be disbarred for the perjury alone and is clearly not fit to judge a pie eating contest let alone cases that will decide the law of the land for generations to come.

So stop concern trolling, and join me in demanding that all sexual predators lose their jobs and offices regardless of the politics.

* Every time they run footage of 45 bragging that him passing the dementia test proves some how he's smart and going on about how hard the last ten questions are, I sort of lose it. See, as part of the disability process you get accessed for mental competence a lot. I also had a lot of old fashioned IQ tests as a kid because of where I went to school. (I am not going to give y'all my long ass rant about IQ tests not actually testing intelligence, how they were normed and the ways they have been used and misused. I've done that periodically in writing over the years and i used to give a verbal version of it multiple times a day to my 8th graders when we did "Flowers for Algernon," as the only people in the room who'd taken one were me and the kids with disabilities and a rant from someone who routinely tested "genius," even though that really means very little, about why the test is a mess was apt to mean a lot more than it might from someone else, and I never ever wanted to single of the kids with disabilities especially in this context, though over the years I had several of the more popular ones volunteer because here was something they had expert knowledge about). Anyway, various types of intelligence and cognitive tests are something I've experienced, though I'm not an expert. (I've administered some specific, specialized tests for special ed assessments professionally, but not this kind of test). Consider me an interested amateur. I recognize components. I can list the most common words they generally have one repeat at regular intervals from the people I was tested by in the last decade and a half (In no particular order: horse, ball, tree, pencil, snow, grass). I was told last time that they are meant to change them up, so the fact that I expressed surprise at a different word set means that the the previous three testers were likely not doing it right. I know I'm not as sharp as I was as teen as I used to do strings of 8-10 numbers reversed instead of 5-6 like I do now. Obviously, I don't have dementia, but they like to check Medicare recipients periodically just in case and my youth just means I can tell them no if I don't want to be bothered. Anyway, I know that test they gave him, as it was the last one I had, several years ago. It is DEAD EASY. It is literally testing for serious brain damage and doesn't have as many of the elements scavenged from the old IQ tests of my youth, as the broader assessments they do with disability screening. As long as there isn't a serious language barrier between tester and test subject, and the subject's hands were all right for drawing a clock face (I had a lover once with no hands and the prosthetic he had for the part of an arm he had on the one side was no good for drawing or hand writing, though he could type with it. I've had friends with CP and benign tremor who might have had a hard time with the mechanics for physical reasons), the only other reason it would be difficult is if something were seriously wrong. Bragging about not having serious brain damage or advanced dementia seems... odd to me, especially since he's making claims about what it proves that one can't really make about the broader spectrum tests that are mostly testing the ability to memorize in various forms. It just doesn't at all match the test and what it's for, so I must wonder is he lying or is he unable to understand the explanation of what that test is for. If he thought a so simple a kindergartner could do it test hard and was unable to understand the explanation of what the test is for.... Let us hope he is just lying as is his custom.

Which is why I've been mulling what to say as she makes the press rounds for her book. Is she as terrible as that shit, Seth Mcfarlane? No, but I'm always going to look at her and think about her willingness to shit on other women. It's why I can't wholly embrace Kate McKinnon despite her obvious talent, and why I'm uncomfortable with Gillian Anderson's resurgence for all she made an excellent Media. I feel like there's something fundamentally wrong with a person's feminism if it's not intersectional and that person is willing to self righteously harm the most vulnerable women in our society, and I feel like there is something fundamentally wrong with a person who, while oppressed can have no sympathy for someone else's oppression.

So it's complicated, and I don't know what the answer is. Something to think about, maybe.

* I would like to thank the person who suggested The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles. I am a sucker for low magic Victorian mysteries involving gentlemen who prefer gentlemen. This one has a rather classic gothic romance premise: disgraced younger son returns from twenty years abroad to a decaying country seat after the death of his father and horrible older brother to find he is cursed and a tangle of mysteries and family secrets to be solved if he is to survive. Only, with a bit of quality m/m romance and erotica instead of a female lead and heterosexual romance and erotica. It is very well written, with likeable characters, and interesting magical system, and surprisingly complex given the slenderness of the volume. I guessed the end, but I nearly always guess the end, and read it with enjoyment in one evening. I am looking forward to reading the sequels. TW: suicidal ideation early in the book.

Y’all know I actively avoid football as much as possible, but I’m rooting for the eagles, not because I’m from Philly originally (One was required to appear to root for all four teams if one liked one’s limbs attached, but I considered this lip service a chore), but because I hate liars and cheats, which is what the Patriots are.

My late Uncle was the gentlest of men, but he was vehement about about Tom Brady, second only to his fury at Paterno and Sandusky. (His fury at Paterno pre-dated my birth, as he played for Penn State and knew what went on behind the scenes. His friends and acquaintances in the Pro Football world had brought his rumors of Sandusky. The extent surprised him, but not the crimes themselves). I have always trusted my Uncle’s judgement on all things football and having been a quarter back himself, I trust that when he called bullshit on the Patriots he knew the fuck he was talking about.

I hate that cheaters keep prospering in the NFL; it is a microcosm of what it wrong with our country.

* So I was running out of two of my more important meds, and the refills on the two others I absolutely can't fuck around with if I want to be doing things like breathing were waiting and those get special ordered and cycled back if I don't pick them up. Tavy enforced bed rest all morning my sitting on me every time I tried to get up, but I hadn't the luxury of nursing the infection all afternoon, as meds don't pick themselves up, the library does not pick up and deliver books, and groceries and forage were needing doing. Luckily I was slightly improved. I masked up, washed my hands, and went. It was terrible. The forage line is always bad right after open, but I figured if I did the other errands first, the first volley would have cleared enough for me to get a parking space. I did score accessible parking right by the door, but the line was a block lawn. I pulled out my lawn chair and joined, much as I'd rather be home. The line was like geometrically slower than it ought to have been. It turned out they'd changed computers, so not only was this the first day with a new program, but they were going to have to re-enter everybody since the database apparently wasn't transferable. Three hour line, with the lady ahead of me escalating over a cluster of elderly Ukrainians she persisted in calling Russians whom she was sure were cheating. My attempts to calm her the fuck down failed, though luckily she wasn't violent. As I passed her on the way to the second check out she was complaining about them to a very calm and patient check in guy. Look, they might have been cheating, sure, but also I know a lot of the Ukrainian immigrants pack a whole extended family including any living grandparents into a two bedroom apartment because that's all they can fucking afford, so I see an old man and two old women with soviet era dentistry and I think it's just as likely that they are both maternal and paternal grandparents as it is that they are neighbors carpooling and anyway, the fuck does it matter? They could easily register as two households if they were two households and get more stuff than they would get as one household, so it doesn't look like cheating to me. It's not harming anybody, just leave them alone. You don't know their life. But she would not leave it the fuck alone and kept screaming at them sporadically, sure they were somehow putting one over on the system when I honestly couldn't see how. She was really nice to me, but Jesus so much drama over a small thing, and like a lot of the Ukranian elders, they were super limited English, so in no position to defend themselves, though an American man behind them would occationally yell back at anti-immigrant lady on their behalf. I was completely wilted by the time we checked in even with the limited standing and no able to make clear sentences. At least the fever is gone today even if I'm still feeling crappy in every other possible way.

I did get to see the exact moment when Tavy discovered that all the Goth tchotchkes had vacated his livingroom staring window yesterday. So much delight. He's been having a lot of fun watching birds, people walking their dogs, etc. when he hasn't been draped all over me.

* Is there anyway to go back to the previous version of Firefox? The new update is significantly more work for me to use as it is hard to use with my disabilities, extremely buggy and prone to freezing my computer every hour or two, loses a bunch of my work on every reboot meaning I have to spend 15 mins to half an hour redoing what it lost out of the 1-2 hour window of usability, and every time I open a new tab and go somewhere the home page stays stacked instead of sensibly disappearing which means I'm going to have to transfer my entire frequently used links set into an email so I can frigging get it to open cleanly. Reverting would be dramatically less use if there were a way to do it.

* Look, Insane Clown Posse isn't my type of music, but I stand with them when the government is literally taking their kids away from their fans for attending a concert and criminalizing them over their tattoos. It's scary as fuck and a terrible precedent. I'm old enough to remember the PMRC and congressional hearings and lawsuits over rap and metal. It's an injustice that it's happening at all, which needs to stop, but I can easily foresee 45 having his minions criminalize listening to all sorts of music he personally doesn't like, and I know that hip hop and metal are definitely next on the list. Anything Goth, anything subculture, anything rebellious. We'll be stuck with Christian rocks and country and people will be doing jail time and losing custody etc. for stupid band tattoos they got in college.

I remember after Columbine having to defend my goth students in the Faculty Room, because there was a push to come down on them and treat them like dangerous criminals for liking Marilyn Manson music and black clothes. (I'd been Goth since '88, but one doesn't dress that way to teach). The first time I heard of ICP was in the oughts when two of my guys were getting hassled by admin over writing the logos on their notebook covers, so I went home and researched it, so I would know what I was talking about so I could advocate for them. Yes, there are drugs at the gatherings. There are drugs at music festivals and concerts and raves. It doesn't mean that anyone who liked the Grateful Dead or went to a Rave once is a dangerous gang member. It seems to me the FBI is going after the Juggaloes because they are poor, so don't have money for expensive legal defense, and they dress in a way that makes it hard for people, particularly in the media, to take their complaints seriously. They are easy to mock and ignore and belittle. hur, hur, people are having their lives ruined because they like to weir make up and listen to music on their days off.

Fuck that! I don't have to like the music or want to be part of their subculture to see them as human beings who need their human rights and fair treatment under the law.

This is a canary in the coal mine, and I refuse to mock people who are in danger of losing everything because the ruling party wants a police state.

* 45 is now outright blaming the people protesting fascism for the violence perpetrated on them including things like the NAZIs clubbing a peaceful delegation of clergy and the terrorist attack that murdered an innocent woman and injured 19 other innocent people. He also gave a full throated endorsement to the NAZIs that converged on Charlotte.

I am still trying to get my head around the fact that the official position of the Republican party as represented by the President they voted for is that the NAZIs are the real victims here and that the people they physically attacked and in one case murdered are somehow the attackers.

* I am white and am often assumed to be male (I am an adrogyne), but there are few things as terrifying to me as large groups of white men, because they are generally the people insisting I do not deserve even the most basic human rights. They are generally the ones talking about rounding us up and putting us in camps or flat out killing us.

I am on the other side of the country, but seeing the Charlottesville images and hearing the associated rhetoric is fucking terrifying. The images and chants are instantly recognizable. I have often written about how much more dangerous white supremacists are in this country than radicalized muslims. White men born in this country have done 73% of the terrorist acts in this country in recent years. I can not think of a single terrorist act performed by someone who wasn't a white man in my state since I moved here in '98; I can name plenty done by white supremacists. For example, they generally try to bomb the MLK day parade in Spokane most years. I have not once been harassed or threatened by a person of colour since I moved west 'in '91. I have a whole list of harassment, threats, and attempted assaults by white cis men in those decades.

Republicans are defunding attempts to stop white terrorism and attempting to suppress reports on the real danger it poses. In five states they are trying to pass laws to legalize terrorist attacks on crowds such as occurred in Charlottesville. 45 has ordered white supremacist terrorist organizations to be moved off task force agendas and to be ignored in favour of increased harassment of innocent moderate muslims. Look, I am not a fan of Islam for pretty much the same reasons I am not fond of organized christianity, and if there is probable cause I am all for law enforcement doing what is legal and necessary to prevent attacks, but I feel like white straight Christian cis men are disproportionately a threat to public safety and law enforcement approaches to terrorism ought to reflect that and proportionate resources need to be allocated towards the real threat whether they are clinic bombers, Aryan Nation, KKK, Neo-NAZI, etc.. Police need to start arresting them when they assault people instead of attacking peaceful protesters and hunting and killing innocent black people.

This needs to stop; it needed to have stopped a long fucking time ago; and it shouldn't have taken an alarmingly loud mob with torches chanting NAZI slogans to get this discussion going on the republican side. My worry is that racist policies will continue even though some Republicans still have just enough shame to admit under pressure that NAZIs might be bad.
