The Daily Beast and Newlines noted another inconsistency: The bomb threat arrived 24 minutes after the Minsk control tower radioed to the Ryanair flight crew.

* Last Monday we had our first unmasked full vax visitor in the house. It was a good visit. This visitor was last here last October, but that was a masked, outdoors, socially distanced visit. From the cat's perspective, it had been a year and a half. They scattered and hid, of course, but Tavy is old enough to have memories of the Before Time, and after a while he realized the voice was familiar and he had liked this visitor before so he came out to sniff stuff, get a quick scritch from the visitor, and watch the bird show. It was fine.

Livia is younger and doesn't remember the before times that well. She will clock that a stranger is vaguely familiar sometimes, but she's nearly from scratch with most people and has trouble with masks. She thought the visitor had left because it was silent when I was in the bathroom, so she came out of her cave to check. She found stange stuff by the door, went to sniff it, turned around and there waas a Stranger! On Tavy's sofa! The Horror! The Stranger had a good cat vibe and stayed still and made friend blinky eyes and was generally chill, show she opted not to return to her hidde, but hung out on my bed mostly. She was brave enough to come out for litter and I fed her her shreds in there. It was fine, if a bit stressful for her.

I was proud of them both. Brave kittens.

* Friday: So a lot of the medical stuff has been straightened out. Apparently the original specialist team is working on the slower growing set and the aggressive big boy went to the top guy in the county. The slow ones I'm thinking of calling McConnelville as they've been there forever and are slowly bleeding the life out of the body politic (me) for the benefit of a handful of precancerous colonies that will slowly kill me if not removed. likely these guys sent me to the ER recently. The massive, immediate threat has half choked off my esophagus right above my stomach, or, you know progress. In the form of food. It's dug in deep and is going to kill me (or democracy) fast if we can't get him to move out the way. I'm calling him Manchinville.

Timeline is they will do a special procedure to map Manchinville late this month or early next depending on when they can grab an ER slot. Likely they will then move him out of the way at some point this summer. McConnellville will be incredibly unpleasant to deal with and we are currently looking at an August to september timeline.

* Saturday, we finally started the table top. This is the early medieval old school Wod with home brew rule alterations that I've been running off and on since I moved north in the late '90's. This is the third fresh group in it. There's a lot of altered history, because player characters do stuff to change it.

It was a mix of full vax in person and zoom. We have two people who never played before, who I had with me. Squirrel ended up Zooming from his room so he could see better, and coming out when we needed to do some quick one on one. Everyone else played via zoom. I was a bit worried about the mixed format, but I think we can make it work.

It was a bit messy as some people had lost or not finished their character sheets, and I was mostly doing a world building/characters get to know you session. Also, we were rusty and had forgotten some rules. I've got a bunch of long planning done and a short term plot for next session that I plan to build the Constantinople section on, so it should be good to go.

I got my PRIDE flags up before the game. some of you may remember last year's pride flag battle. i used stimulus to buy a Queer Chevron flag from a queer owned small business, so I have that up to. I already have a sound bite length argument if the HOA decides to fight me. We'll see if they do. They are beautiful and i love the light effect through them in the livingroom.

For those who have expressed concern via PMs in places I post ,ore real time, I am perfectly comfortable with the medical procedure time table. They are prioritizing Manchinville because he grows quickly, is already in a tricky location requiring a specialist's specialist to remove, and that's going to get worse the longer delay. They are trying to find me a procedure and a surgery slot as soon as they can in a hospital with a massive fucking back up from the pandemic. They also need to leave time for me to recover from the next procedure before surgery. The reason the McConnellville procedure is a much longer wait is because I will need to recover from a pretty serious outpatient surgery to move Manchinbville out of the way and the McConnellville stuff is physically pretty brutal on the body even though it's not particularly hard in every other way.

Seriously I and everyone on my care team think this scheduling makes sense given the givens. Yes, I am worried about the Manchinville surgery going wrong, but assuming they don't cut anything they shouldn't and they get it fast enough, I'll be okay. The McConnellville thing will be a few days of hell on earth, like right up there with genital surgery in my do not want to experience again book, but it's not that dangerous as procedures go as long as I'm not weakened from the other surgery. The wait is appropriate. It's okay. It'll be an ugly summer, but I expect to survive it, if that makes sense.

They find another Starfleet vessel orbiting Omega IV with no life signs, but beam over for some reason without any sort of protect from infection. How do they not even have 20th century tech level PPE? and they've gotten infected before doing exactly this, so there is zero excuse. Like, isn't this a job for space Suits? If it's a life form the suits would protect; if it's a pathogen, the space suits would protect them. Just saying. Anyway they find a bunch of uniforms with white powder where the people would be, which turn out to be the minerals in a desiccated human body. Log tells them they are dead and they should go to the planet and not return to infect their own ship. They actually listen.

A survivor (Captain Tracy) from the ship has broken the prime directive with the locals. The Survivor is living in a village of Asian locals, who are at war with the Yang, who are white 'savages.' This is the third time they used this basic plot, though this one annoys me less than the NAZI and Gangster iterations, even if the allegory alternate history thing is stupidly implausible. Sigh. Anyway, the infection is an old bio-weapon. The Yangs are massing for attack. Captain Tracy has been using phasors to help his hosts. Spock and McCoy are pissed. They agree formal charges make no sense, but they could take his phasor. He takes theirs instead and makes them prisoners.

Tracy tells the Enterprise the landing party is sick. They try to alert Sulu, but they are stopped. The locals are immune to disease and can live more than a millennia. Tracy wants Bones to work out how to get the near immortality without the dying if one leaves the planet part. Kirk loses a fight with Tracy. Kirk pretends to support the prime directive, which he only usually does when someone else breaks it. Tracy tosses him in a cage to fight the male Yang. Spock watches from the neighboring cage and makes comments that may or may not be snark. Eventually Spock neck pinches the Yang woman and the man stops fighting kirk to run to her.

Bones is working in a makeshift lab, while Spock tries to escape. Spock suspects the bioweapon destroyed the old civilizations. It turns out the Yang respond to the 'sacred word' freedom. Apparently they've been silent because they don't speak to Coms. The Yangs start helping, but Kirk collapses.

Bones says that after the war nature built up natural immunizing agents against the bioweapons. If the Exeter landing party had stayed a few more hours they'd have lived. The locals are long lived from evolutionary adaptation, so there is no fountain of youth to be found. Tracy reports that he massacred thousands but lost. Kirk, hysterical, screams at Tracy because he did this horrific thing on this planet for nothing. Bones joins in. The village will fall. kirk's like, we can just beam up. Tracy demands more weapons and makes him call for weapons at gun point. The bridge crew is rightly sticking to regs though.

Kirk tricks Tracy into draining the phasor, the Yangs capture them as they wrestle. Kirk works out Yang=Yanks, Com=Communists. Which is the bit I object to. Why would their be human Communists and Yankees with a US flag thousands of years ago on this planet? The whole thing would have worked better with allegory aliens than with literal 20th century humans from thousands of years ago turned "native american' who use the American pledge of allegiance. Tracy tries to convince them that Spock is Satan. (Given this was an early objection to Spock's original design, this is amusing). Kirk points out good is stronger than evil and talks them into trial by combat. Kirk and Tracy wrestle again. Tracy is beating up kirk yet again, so spock uses his variable strength telepathy on a Yang woman to get her to open a communicator. Kirk beats tracy, but won't kill him. The landing party beams down to arrest Tracy. The yangs try to worship them as Gods. Kirk says the sacred word weren't written for chiefs. "We the People" is for all the people. They literally have a copy of the declaration of independence. Shatner chews the scenery as he reads some of it dramatically. The Yangs promise to obey the declaration. "Liberty and freedom need to be more than just words."

They do not ever explain how the time traveling alternate universe Americans and Chinese got there. Sigh.

* Today I was expecting a table top player for Char Gen. I woke in good time, bathed, read some Anne of Cleves, did lungs, fed fish/cats/plants, pulled the books for the char gen, did dishes, made myself tea, full changed the bathroom litter, and swept key areas. (Not in that order. I think the litter was much earlier). I sat down to drink my tea and do a little work until friend arrived. This was fortunate as they never turned up. I did eat eventually, and did some online rp.

I'm falling behind on news in part because I frankly am not up to par as far as concentration because my friend is still missing. Everything is being done that can reasonably be done. The Missing friend is loved my many and that network of friends has been activated. Police have been contacted and reports filed.

We think he is alive and please do not feel like you need to send condolences. It IS distressing and stressful for everyone involved. I am worried for Missing friend, but I am also thinking of the friends who are doing the hard work of coordinating and searching and dealing with authorities. I particularly feel for his family. I wish the situation was fixable, but odds are it is a thing that must be endured until it resolves.

At the same time, as someone from Philly, clearly the mistake was sending it to the Franklin Institute and not the University Museum or Philadelphia Museum of art. * Given the republicans made up a brand new rule that the President is suddenly only allowed to nominate for the Supreme court in the first three years of his term regardless of what the Constitution says, lied that it was not a brand new thing they made up specifically because they believe that only republican presidents have the right to pick supreme court nominees, and vowed to hold it open another four years if Hillary won, I am having a hard time taking them seriously when they exhort Democrats to "rise above politics" and vote on Neil Gorsuch when they wouldn't "rise above politics" themselves to even give Merrick Garland a hearing. Fuck that! They broke it, they bought it.

They need to nominate Merrick Garland or some other person with bipartisan support. If not, Democrats need to display spine.

- Suddenly Human. Worf is a feminist! This one is complicated on a bunch of levels. Watching it, I am haunted by the excellent novel Warboy, that explores similar themes around cross cultural kidnap, what is and isn't child abuse, loyalties, agency etc.. This, being '90's network television can't go nearly as far. This is another episode that touches on PTSD.

They are always forcing Picard into fatherhood roles, aren't they? I wish they'd stop treating Picard's preference to be childfree as if it were pathological and funny. That may be the most annoying noise a non-baby/toddler aged human can make. Apparently Talurians love metal. Good to know. Do bedroom doors on a starship not lock?

- Remember Me. This one is hard for me to watch.

- Legacy. Ishara: How did Tasha die? Me: she was fridged because the writer's couldn't figure out what to do with her. Brent Spiner acted the shit out of this one.

- Future Imperfect. I have always felt that it is a brutal incitement of Riker that the love of his life is a holodeck program.

* I really appreciate the way Season 2 of Masters of Sex is willing to confront various types of white privilege and different shades of covert and overt racism by showing the main characters being on brand of horrible or another. Most shows are not anywhere near that kind of brave. Most shows would make their white characters the enlightened exceptions, or lampshade the issues. Instead they depict everything from Virginia's clueless about the ways sexual stereotypes are repeatedly used as an excuse to harm or kill black people, to Bill Masters using that real threat of harm as a threat against an ally who went above and beyond for him because he was feeling cornered, to Libby's outrageously horrible and utterly believable behavior to Coral. I'm just generally in awe of them being willing to be so warts and all with pretty much all the main characters. I'm two discs in at this point, so there is a ways to go, but I keep thinking of the contrast with things like St. Tyrion and carol over on Game of Thrones, where they've deliberately chosen to ruin other character's personalities and arcs to make their handful of of favorites always in the right and clever, removing all the nuance and problematic things, such as Cersei's deep internalized mysogyny and Tyrian's deep internalized ableism. The books Martin wrote are so much more grown up than the Game of Thrones show in much the way Masters of Sex is more grown up in the handling of characters. I'm not referring to the depiction of sex (though that is way more adult on Masters of Sex than it is on the Game of Thrones TV Show), but in the willingness to show characters we genuinely like such as Virginia, Lillian, and Betty doing terrible, terrible things. I could write a thesis on the way Masters of Sex depicts women, the way it talks about LGB issues, dying, sexuality, ethics, race, the balance of idealism and practicality, different relationship models, on the choice to have their male lead be complexly, understandably, realistically horrible even though he knows better and and once and a while does better. This show is so brave.

* I had all these thoughts about the Moscow Grand Prix, but yesterday I had a marathon... I'm thinking 14 hour rp session during which I mostly forgot to eat and skipped at least two sets of meds, possibly three. (I had toaster waffles during the duel rather important pre-event scenes, and I vaguely remember a snack at some point during the bachelor party, after which I segued into a small but fascinating scene that took me to bed time.... no wonder I was struggling to walk today). Anyway, today I had massive obligations out in the world and am now way too tired to be coherent about the skating. I did want to say that Javier Fernandez has reached the point where he's an absolute delight to watch the way kurt Browning was, the Russian women have a really deep and impressive bench again this year, and I am deeply uncomfortable with people skating to "Gone with the Wind," what with the whole glamourizing slavery and terrorism propaganda tool for the KKK thing.

I picture Bran exploring in some disused tower in Winterfell, and finding a ceiling with a spiral of shells from the Storm Coast and the beaches near Oldtown in the Reach carefully plastered into the ceiling with chips of mica to add a bit of glitter by candle light, and wondering what hand placed them there.

I imagine Brienne of Tarth as a girl finding an old portrait of an ancestor most of a century dead who looks so like her if she really had been born male, smiling an approving dimpled smile out at her. Delwyn certainly would have approved of her, even if her father didn't much.

I think about how the Targaryens fared without Dhraegon quietly pruning branches and encouraging out breeding and grafting where necessary in the family garden, and how disappointed he’d be in an afterlife he certainly didn’t believe in in the next century’s worth of family history. This sort of thing. Little images of never was in a larger never was.
