* Wednesday, the Nearby Millenial did her first training shift under the supervision of caregiver Millenial, now promoted to Head Millenial. It was charming. The plan is we all forage Wednesday afternoons, and then Nearby Millenial clocks in for her two hours. Wednesday's are crazy busy work wise for Head Millenial at it's a huge help to everyone involved. The goal is for nearby Millenial to register to work other caregiving gigs in the area, but also be available if Head Millenial gets sick, etc..

Tavy is on day three of nightmares and high anxiety, which I am doing my best to help him with. I long for good sleep though. It'll pass eventually.

I need to take the car in again. *fingers crossed*

* Tavy was feeling much better by Friday. I alas, had crap for sleep. I had to get up mid sleep cycle to take the car in to get poked at by the honest mechanics. I was lucky. It was the lower end of the range, rather than the high end. They can't actually fix it properly until the 20th, as they are swamped and short staffed, but they patched it together so I can drive it until then if I am careful and don't drive it too much. The fix is going to be about 90, which means I can't pay a bill this month, but luckily, I have not paid it yet, so the money physically exists.

Friday was also forage food delivery. It arrived while I was out and I brought it right in and unpacked it. No mice. It was also pharmacy delivery day. I was also double booked to finish a scene on line I'd started Wednesday that was rather important for both plot and character reasons, while I was also supposed to get a visit from a Millennial to do a thing. Luckily, the timing worked pretty well and everything got done.

From the time I got up for pharmacy delivery to the actual arrival of the Millennial, poor Tavy was in an agony of excitement. From my behavior, clearly a Millennial was coming, possibly his personal favorite Millennial. Unfortunately, said Millennial arrived two hour after the usual Millennial visitor arrival time, so every time he heard a small noise or caught movement out of the corner of his eye through one of the windows he went running over to check. He was too worked up to settle. At one point he escaped onto the patio to see if the millennial was out there gardening.

The Visitor was only here for about an hour, and the Emperor tried to leave with him. Poor Button. Saturday game will be more satisfying as he likes both Millennials who are coming and they will arrive at the usualish time. (Don't worry, we mask. we are taking delta seriously. These are also the ones who literally work in the apartment and they follow proper infectious disease protocols when in public and visiting me or each other. So basically a bubble with masks.

* Saturday's game the players planned a raid/heist against the Imperial Palace of the East Roman Empire. Initially, we had four mages (plus a mortal+ henchperson), and three assorted shifts. Two of the shifters had to drop off over the summer for assorted life reasons. Last season one of the characters acquired an NPC through play, but they are still not sure what he can do. This means we have 1 Garou Ragabash in a group of mages. <.< >.> They were not a fight heave group as the other two shifters were not werewolves, so the game is designed with the best fighters in the group being the mortal plus and a literal goose. (Long story on the goose. Basically this is a group that gathers information, and ideally sneaks rather than fights.

The way I world built, some places tend to be one or another species dominant, but the big, cosmopolitan centers are generally neutral by treaty and often have mixed defenses made and maintained by mixed species. there is also some cross species cooperation, particularly between certain groups in cosmopolitan settings. (Some factions, tribes, species, etc. don't cooperate ever. Some do in limited emergency circumstances. Some are way more open and relaxed. When I run mixed groups we select for backgrounds tribes, factions, clans, traditions, species that would ICly be more open and for play balance. shifters are first level to start. mages are arete two to start which makes sense if you've ever played mage. You can do A Lot with arete two, arete one not so much. A level one shifter is about as competent as a level two mage for dealing with starter character challenges). My general way of running things is to put makes sense and fun over often conflicting source books.

The Palace is species neutral by treaty (between a limited number of species), defended by multiple species, with a whole lot of political faction ebb and flow within. The group was working as outsiders to the city power structure so the important faction heads could have plausible deniability. They infiltrated the palace and have been spying basically. Studying the physical and political layout, trying to track down the mystical source of a virulent fever that had been burning off and on for a couple of years. they discovered that and more. So much more.

In the previous session they'd found something so big it really did require a city wide response. A council of the assorted friendly Shifter and Mage faction heads from various species was called on neutral ground. The group reported the fever source and called for help with some taint cleansing in the Palace, because one Ragabash with a cleansing ritual was not going to cut it. The mage PCs couldn't go inside because the Euthantos PC had done what amounted to a plague return to sender type thing. The mystic fever did not effect Garou, but is a pain in the ass to heal in the few mages likely to catch it. (level two and up life mages aren't catching it, but not everyone has two levels in Life.) Also, the mages needed to make and hold a temporary opening in a weak place in the wards to allow Garou in the penumbra through. They also reported the threat big enough to destroy the whole city they'd discovered.

The initial higher up plan to deal with the big threat turned out to be likely worse than doing nothing when it turned out the NPC had information about a similar previous attempt a very, very long time ago. That got tabled, but the raid/heist went ahead. Mages got the cleansing party in lead by our Garou who had found the taint and knew how to get to both sites. Some of them held the hole open, while the others fought the guards who inevitably found them and a cluster of mages come to investigate the hoopla. There had been a tiny combat once before, but this was their first multi-wave, multi-round combat. Meanwhile, the Garou used a thing he'd gotten in the umbra previously to bribe some small spider spirits into helping. They stealthed about, did their cleansings, avoided spirit guardians, and did some nice looting. A guard was beheaded. a mage was cleaved in two. A couple people were battered and bitten unconscious by a Horrible Goose. (Unleash the goose of war. Some others ran away. The group escaped.

They are now at the point where they are ready to formalize the group. Progress!

* After Saturday game, I needed to get gas so I could take Head Millennial home. I usually budget $30, but prices were so high it was just short of $50. This on top of the repairs I need to the car. I was just loading back into the car, when an out of breath man jogged up. He had very little English. I have even less Spanish, since it's just random words and phrases I picked up living here over the years (slowly deteriorating since I quit teaching), plus things I can deduce from what is left of my deteriorating French and Latin vocabulary. Plus Mime.

I worked out his car had run out of gas and he'd left his family there to come try to get some. He seemed legitimately freaked out and desperate for help. I gave him one of my cheap emergency cloth masks I keep in the car so we could go inside. At some point I had a gas can, but Skye gave it away in a move, and they were now charging 18+tax for a one gallon plastic can. (Jesus, Fuck!) Luckily he had it, because I didn't, having just blown it gassing my car. I negotiated the purchase. He only had cash and the change wasn't enough, so I bought him the gallon of fuel with what was left on my card, which legitimately startled him. I kept saying and miming zero when he asked how much. I was imagining he'd need what else he might have to gas up and possibly find food and lodging for his family, and it was the least I could do. There was no question of me not offering him a ride. I've been rescued by strangers when I had car trouble before and there was simply no question of me not doing the same.

Now we had to figure out where his car was. O.o Luckily Head Millennial had taken a little Spanish via language learning program, so had about as much as the gentleman had English. This was not enough for anything like clear directions, but we did manage to work out he wanted us to get on the highway going south, which was odd, because he was definitely saying North also, but I worked it out.

They'd been travelling North through the twisty, foggy, mostly unlit mountain pass at night, which can be scary on it's own. Also, there is a very long stretch of farmland with no gas South of the mountain, and literally one place to get gas in the pass. It's not as bad as the 40ish miles of farmland on a stretch further south where I got stranded on a shoulder at night once, but it is bad and waaaaaay the fuck scarier. The shoulder is narrow, and people get nervous driving a twisty two laner that high up. especially in fog. (South bound is far lower of the slope and nowhere near as alarming at night). No one was going to stop for a latino man, even with kids anywhere up there. Odds are no one would much notice them, being too busy driving and not tangling with trucks. If you runout there you are fucked 'til morning and there is a non zero chance of someone messing up and clipping you or your car. Jesus fuck! No wonder he was so happy to see us and grateful for our help. It was a massive relief to him when I mimed turning around. he must have been terrified. I'd suspected that when he was willing to get in a beat up old car with two strange white people at night).

It was a very, very long drive to the next exit south of the gas station where we collected him. I'm not kidding about how little flatland there is on that stretch of coast. The small ass community where the last gas station before the really rocky bit is well past the high bits. We found the north on ramp after a bit of fumbling with shitty signage in the dark. (I've pulled off here maybe three times since I moved up here in '98. I know how empty the passes are, so I am super careful about enough gas. A non-local wouldn't know that though). Then there was the long drive back, with us not sure how far they'd gotten before their gas ran out.

I spotted the car in time to stop. They cleverly owned flares (I don't) and had blinkers going. He must have jogged two to three miles for help, luckily down hill, but if I hadn't offered the ride, he'd have had to do that uphill going the wrong way. I just kept thinking how scary this would have been for him even without the language barrier and not knowing if American convenience stores carried gas can. They were so happy when they saw him get out of the car with the gas, I was incredibly happy they were all safe. (We could have easily been a car full of MAGA monsters or Proud Boys with guns or bats instead of someone bringing their husband and father back).

Yes, I've had people try to scam me with out of gas stories. Yes, the PNW has a history of robbing people who stop to help stranded drivers. Yes, there is always a risk taking a stranger into one's car. It's just I am good at reading people, and I absolutely believed him. He was clearly trying very hard not to freak the fuck out and was just as clearly out of breath. He had way more reason to be frightened of approaching white strangers at night. I'm glad it was us, a couple of mild mannered goth weirdos and not some asshole he approached in his desperation. We’re a blue state because of the cities strung like necklaces on the highway strings, but scratch blue here and you get red. I hope wherever they are going, they get there safely.

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beam down to an 'improbably' earthlike planet. ('Improbable' despite lots of AU planets they've landed on already). They find an ancient advanced large metal artifact. They need to deflect an asteroid from the planet in thirty minutes, so clearly faffing about on the surface instead of solving the problem at any time before the last minute. They find a mix of Navaho, Mohican, and Delaware native Americans living traditional lifestyles there. There is a lot of extremely unfortunate dialog here, but it's nothing next to the appropriation, use of red face, and white savior crap to come.

Spock wants them to stop wasting time while a planet is at stake. (I agree, Spock, I agree). Kirk insists on futzing about with the obelisk for fun and to raise the stakes by wasting more time and gets sucked in. The search parties fail. Spock beams everyone up to go save the planet. McCoy has hysterics about abandoning Kirk even though logically saving the planet will save Kirk, while not saving the planet will definitely kill Kirk. Um, duh! Despite supposedly being a Doctor, McCoy somehow couldn't grasp this without it being explained as if to a three year old. McCoy gives no fucks that the entire planetary population of Native Americans will die if they don't stop the asteroid hitting the planet.

Kirk has amnesia. When he emerges from the obelisk the locals take him for their long awaited Savior God which...*head desk* Seriously, this is painful to watch. The local Elders want Kirk to prove he's a God. Kirk is supposed to rouse the Temple spirits to save them from the asteroid. Kirk vaguely remembers being from the sky and saves a drowned child with CPR, thus proving his white savior godhood. If you can not hear my disgust with this whole plot line in my typing, trust me, it's there.

Spock exceeds the safety margin to make up time for the time Kirk and McCoy wasted for no good reason. Scotty tells him off. Whatever they are paying Spock is clearly not enough. They try to deflect the asteroid, but the engines are damaged and they don't deflect the asteroid enough. Spock puts the ship in front of the asteroid in hopes of breaking it up. McCoy is still hysterical and obstructionist, unable to grasp that they need to save the planet or everyone on it dies, including Kirk.

Apparently the white lady made up in red face named Miramanee was engaged to a local named "Salish," which is the name of a real tribe near where I live. I have so many questions this episode will never answer. She breaks up with him to be Kirk's lover, because of course. Somehow Miramanee isn't bright enough to pull a tunic off using the head hole. Way to depict a grown woman as childlike. The Elders grovel in a way that turns my stomach and want to know how to advance and improve to please the Sky Gods. Ugh. I just... Why even is this episode? Kirk is happy and relaxed for the first time ever.

Miramanee is betrothed to Kirk because tribal law demands it. Suuuuurrrre. Anyway Kirk is into it, so they are to be married tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Enterprise is reduced to impulse power and they need to go to a repair base. The Rock is still headed for the planet. They will arrive in months, but four hours ahead of the asteroid. McCoy has more hysterics and berates Spock.

Salish attacks Kirk. The blood proves he's not a God. Kirk refuses to kill Salish. He and Miramanee marry. Months later, he's having nightmares and believes he doesn't deserve this happiness. Miramanee is pregnant. He invents irrigation and a lamp even though they would have had that technology.

Spock refuses to go to sick bay, being busy deciphering the obelisk. McCoy berates Spock and threatens to call security. Spock pretends to rest, then goes back to work. The symbols are both notes and an alphabet. The Preservers seeded "primitive cultures" throughout the galaxy. Their asteroid deflector has become defective. They need to fix it fast.

The asteroid approaches. Kirk tells them to go to the caves, but the locals say the caves aren't safe and he needs to go rouse the temple spirits. He prays fruitlessly. Chaos ensues. The mob stones Kirk and Miramanee. Spock and McCoy beam in, terrifying the locals. They save Kirk, but let Miramanee and her unborn baby die with only palliative care. Spock mind melds with Kirk to bring back his memory. Kirk resists, but it eventually works.

Spock catches Kirk up on the plot. He repeats his original message which accidentally opens the trap door. They try to figure out what Kirk did to screw up the system. Spock sorts it. Zap! Miramanee dies still believing in Kirk. They all bugger off having endangered a planet and contaminated another culture because they like site seeing.

* Today was going to be short sleeped. Unfortunately it was also terrible sleep. They were using loud machines in the hall and outside my window. Multiple charity phone calls, each requiring me to wake up enough not only to talk, but to block numbers. I kind of feel that since I've told the one group to take me off their list at least four times a year since my Mother died, reminding them that each time they call it distresses me and they refuse to stop calling, that they are in their own way as bad as the scammers. I am not convinced that the other charities are legitimate and can't be arsed to check. Add to this some asshole let their alarm go off for a couple of hour (It was going on after an earlier sleep interruption but I was able to drift back to sleep despite it), stopping only about 10 mins before my alarm, thus preventing me getting my last hour of sleep after an actual useful phone call from a friend, as an escalating volumed alarm was one thing too many at that point.

Cookies were exchanged successfully. I managed to remember to bring everything I needed for Fix it, except... my house key, which I put down to unplug my working fish light on my black and white goth table cloth and didn't notice as I left with my arms full of back back, forage bags, and the extremely delicate on it's last legs fish light. I should have stuck it in my mouth. I still had my spare car keys, so I put everything away, failed to find the other keys that fell of the fish chain, failed at getting back in to retrieve proper keys, hobbled all the way to where I've had to park since I lost my parking and went to fix it. The alpha engineer had brought me a capacitor and spent a long time putting it in, test it, etc., but in the end it looks like a transformer had died too when it went, so there is no resurrecting it. They cleaned the fans on the dying fish light. It was impossible to get in to fix the fan bearing that is likely the problem and I damaged one of the bulbs with all the back and forth. Given I've been needing to buy a twenty dollar bulb since... June(?) and haven't had money for that, I am not seeing wear I'm getting 140-150 or so for a twenty gallon fixture. The one dying light and a supplemental have been commuting every day to cover two tanks as it is. Sigh. It does sound slightly better without the crud puppies, but I suspect the damaged fan will not last long. I've been doing what I can to rest them to cut down on the electricals overheating.

Luckily, Squirrel was asleep rather than out, so I was able to rouse him to let me and the good light in. I then had to go right back out as I'd forgotten to drop off the last cookies, but at least A was still empty as that is significantly safer than street parking given how much more gimping that involves, plus a small slope and traffic and the chance of getting parked in or hit. My hip feels like I've been stabbed and the headache is a stunner, but I am home.

Squirrel's door was cracked after my dinner. I am not sure if this was deliberate group social time for cats or an accident, but it went fairly peacefully for the first more than an hour. LM leaked out and she and Livia had a good long stare. Eventually they went into LM's room and whatever went on was too soft to hear from my desk, so no growling or scuffling or terror yowls, so i'm counting that a win. Eventually Tavy turned up and kept going in to check and then running out to complain that Livia was in the wrong room. Eventually, Livia came back out for her snack and to do Livia things. An hour+ there was some growling from an adult cat, likely from LM as she was wanting her gooshy food and he was between her and her wet feeding spot, and Livia being innocently hiding in the cat tree. Lm reasonably assumed that if her door was open it was wet food night. Wet food did in fact appear, and I confined Tavy for assholery, as one does. The irony isn't lost on me that she used to be much worse when hector was trying to eat until I trained her out of it. Tavy tends to stalk back and forth instead of outright attacking, but she hates it. I must not have pulled it all the way on to the latch, as he escaped, and the ensuing three way hissing argument as he tried to hassle LM and I tried to catch him freaked Livia out, so she sensibly went to her room where I also confined him. Thus LM was left in possession of both the field and the goosh. As I wrote most of this, LM was patrolling the common areas, tummy full of her goosh share. Alas, the final straw was LM mistaking one of my gargoyles (the back one) for Tavy. She flipped the fuck out so I put her tail end of goosh in her kibble feeding station in Squirrel's room and let the Imperial couple loose. In LM's defense the gargoyles are only slightly larger than she and Tavy are, are posed rather like casts sitting in the upright position popular in Ancient Egyptian statuary, and I frequently take the grey one for Livia when I see it out of the corner of my eye, even though she is significantly smaller.

Addendum: Squirrel and I talked it over and we're going to try limited on purpose supervised girl time in the evenings to see if they can bond without Tavy in the equation.

* I watched the first season of Jessica Jones this weekend. I am firmly team Malcolm, who is my very favorite. I really liked the nurse too. (Was her name Claire). I loved that Jessica and her sister are friends even though it is complicated as it would be more typical to do the Smurfette trope. I loved the way they handled trauma in general with different people experiencing and dealing with it in different ways. I loved the messy Jessica/Luke relationship. I really appreciated the way Killgrave and Simpson were difference forms of dangerous masculinity, and that they didn't redeem Killgrave. It was dark and hard to watch at times, but important. I do wish they'd wrapped Killgrave up a little faster as things dragged a bit towards the end, but this is my only quibble.

* ISU Grand Prix Final:
Men: A lot of the top guys weren't here for one reason or another. Adam Rippon was going in with an injury. He had a hard fall on the first pass. The rest seemed mostly fine, but he was noticeably more awkward than usual, completely understandably either from injury or tension. Sergei Voronov is mostly jumps and not much else. I really wish his spins were better and the choreography and footwork more complex, but boy can he jump and he does have a way about him. Jason Brown skates so well in an old school way, with some of the best footwork in the business. If he were skating in the Eldridge era, he'd have been a contender. Alas, he has no quads, and you really have no chance without them in men's skating at the very highest level. It breaks my heart a little every time. He fell on the second jumping pass, but the rest was lovely. Nathan Chen's jump were really off compared to his usual, his spins are still not quite where I'd like them to be, and I don't think this music is doing him any favours, but I do think he's coming along nicely as far as grace and improved choreography. This performance was very disappointing, but I know he is the best jumper in the world when he's on, so let us hope he does better at nationals and the Olympics. Mikhail Kolyada had a rough skate too with a bunch of bad landings in the first half, and popped a jump in the second half. His spins look very good, but I've just never warmed to him, though he seems popular with the commentators. Shoma Uno's one of my favorites in the current crop of skaters, graceful and expressive, normally with all around excellence on the technicals. He too was uncharacteristically struggling with the jumps, and his final spin really traveled. This season has just been brutal in this way. Uno's free skate was better than Chen's but not enough to make up the gap from the short program.

Women: Evgenia Medvedeva is still out with the foot injury which leaves things pretty open. Karolina Kostner really does skate beautifully and this music and choreography really suit her. She hasn't quite the difficulty one expects these days, though the commentators point out areas that are likely placeholders for things like a triple triple for the Olympics. She had a bit of trouble with some of her second half elements, but I do love to watch her skate. Maria Sotskova's spins aren't particularly impressive and she is not particularly expressive, but her jumps are excellent. Not my taste, but solid. Kaetlyn Osmond skated a solid, quality routine. She doubled a triple and then fell in the second half, which is a shame given how well it was going up to that point. Alina Zagitova is doing something controversial, bold, and incredibly difficult. The fact that she can do this clean and make it entertaining continues to amaze me. There were some small imperfections, but this was seriously excellent. Satoko Miyahara is exactly to my taste, really well rounded with excellent spins, expressive choreography, and complex footwork. Her jumps are wonderful when she's on. Here there was some under rotation early on, alas, but it was really fun to watch.

* I'm having one of my physical inconveniences this evening. Before things went south, physically, I managed to make good progress on the gift lighting. The second string of white clusters had a dead place in it, so I was forced to rethink. It's outside with the blue drape I leave up September to January. I have three strings of traditional Christmas lights with blown electricals, two mixed and one all white, and three empty strings with good electricals. I am scavenging the bulbs from the dead to light the living and doing it in such a way that next year I can also count them for Halloween. I've got red and white up in my bedroom window, with the white facing in. I've got Orange and green alternating until I ran out of orange and just did green draped. I need to do what I hope to be a blue and purple string, but I may have to fill with red and/or white. We'll see.

Tavy and Livia are comfortable to the point that they mostly play when both awake, with her wearing him out first, and me trying to provide entertainment here and there, but they are also able to ignore each other when they want food or sleep. I showed her how the busy box works last night and I set up some toys half stuck out in hopes of her practicing. She got one of the mice out to play with herself. Petty good for four months. she's not ready to try the harder ones yet, but I am very proud off her.

Livia will come right up to us when we are still and use our legs as terrain for pouncing out in ambush at Tavy if we stay still, but runs if we move or try to touch her, though she's touched me a few times. Tavy still resists her desire to sit on the top of the cat tree with him, but he's given up chasing her out of the cave just below. When I wrote these, she'd been crashed out in there for an hour or two and he'd gotten bored and come to sleep in his mesting box, pressed against my instep. It is progress.

Addendum: When Squirrel went out for work, scattering cats ahead of him, there was a gift package of hooks and micropellets waiting for me. Thank you, Benefactress! I shall try to do more anchoring tomorrow with them if there is time before the guests arrive.

Livia update: She took all her evening naps in the cat tree cave in my office. So right there close to Tavy where she could see me and I could see her.

* This is my response to a comment about the tax bill not being about a war on education but a war to only allow the rich into college:

They’ve been fighting against access to education on all levels nearly as long as I’ve been alive. I am pretty sure the goal is to make it impossible for people not born with large trust funds to ever improve their situation, to permanently enshrine extreme wealth inequality and hereditary class distinction.

They are trying to concentrate wealth and power in small number of hands and make it as close to impossible to undo as they can manage. you can see it in every financial policy starting with Regan. You can see it in the battle to destroy Unions and depress wages since the ‘70′s. You can see it in mass incarceration for minor offenses that bar people from voting. You can see it in the voter suppression that keeps eligible citizens from voting. You can see it in targeted voter intimidation aimed at people of colour. You can see it in the deliberate starving of public schools of the funds they need to actually educate students instead of warehousing them. You can see it in supposed school “reforms” designed to lower the quality of education and leave students less prepared for higher education.

You can really see it in this tax bill which punishes teachers for providing school supplies to students who can’t afford them, and which makes college so expensive only the rich get to go, no matter how hard the student works or how intelligent they are.

This is a war on Merit on behalf of the interests of inherited wealth. We need to fight this with everything we have, because they are stealing the future of this generation and every generation to come after and the more battles we lose the harder it will be to keep fighting.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the way we socialize men and boys to believe they are entitled to other people's bodies, because that's what this is. ( TW Sexual assault: ) So I keep thinking about the things that I was forced to accept if I wanted my pay check in my teens and twenties, all the women and men I've known with stories like this, and the occasional male friend coming to me over the years with his horror on discovering it had happened to his girlfriend or his women friends or his family members so he could have someone to talk through the process with.

I believe the women. I always believe the women, because it is so disgustingly common. Because I was someone who had to dodge male hands every day at work. Because I had to defend myself and my sister when we were small. Because I have a long list of friends it's happened too, and not just the women. Because it's fucking exhausting to have to deal with constantly, and the things my disease has done to my body and thus put an end to it for me, hasn't erased my long memory of what it felt like to deal with it daily from customers and coworkers and management.

I want a better world than the one we had and the one we have now and that means changing the culture. That means men confronting men and calling them on their bullshit. That means believing and supporting the ones who were attacked. That means listening to the stories. That means raising the next generation of boys better.

* Sunday, the winds were so wild, they kept startling poor Tavy awake. Monday, I did some excellent adulting: tanks, garden stuff, foraging, meds, library, fish food (We only had a day or two of micro pellets left). My the time the forage was away and dishes done, etc., I didn't have much left. I did promised things and necessary things, but I wasn't up to tackling the news firehouse. Instead I went to bed early and got good sleep. Tuesday I spent the afternoon on phone bureaucracy (Progress!) and went on a long loop for a kibble run in really wild weather. I made it home safe despite wind strong enough to bat my car around, rush hour, and accidents on the freeway. There was a break in the rain the last half of the journey home and I stood next to my car a good five minutes, watching the clouds rush north alarmingly fast. Through occasional breaks in the stormclouds, I could see another layer higher up moving slower, but still fast for clouds. It was beautiful and strange and it made me wish I had a camera so I could film it for you.

Anyway, I am a day and a half behind on postings, and it may be some time before I catch up.

* Amoung the random bits of phone bureaucracy today, I talked to a supervisor at the clinic where I go. This is not a thing that normally happens, but I need to make special arrangements for some unusual medical documentation another bit of bureaucracy is going to need apparently.

Anyway, some of you will remember that I was one of the earliest trans patients to pioneer at this clinic. There were two others I know of before me but seriously, it was a huge thing for this city as when we started advocating for trans services there, trans patients still had to travel all the way to Seattle for basic services like prescriptions. I'm not even talking first prescribing. I am talking about on going treatment. The only endocrinologist in town was a notorious transphobe and wasn't taking new patients anyway. One doctor at the poverty clinic was willing to do script renewels, and a little while after that, I talked a second into trying it. Word of mouth spread, because even having two practitioners doing basic trans friendly GP type stuff North of Seattle was a Big Fucking Deal, especially as they take Medicare/Medicaid and do sliding scale for patients in poverty. People kept coming; services kept expanding. The clinic realized how big the need was, and they evolved to take proper care of us. New staff was hired with the trans patient base in mind. They did special training to make sure trans patients were being treated properly. They asked actual trans patients how they were doing and took suggestions seriously. This is how to be an ally on a medical professional level, and I am incredibly proud of them. They adjusted standardized forms to make them trans friendly. They have a standard protocol for use names vs. legal names and are super careful about calling trans patients by the correct ones. They changed the fucking names of the clinic a number of years ago because the old one made them look a tad catholic and that was scary for LGBTQIA+ patients, and thus counter productive given that they are now not only the major provider up here for transfolk, but they have a large HIV+ patient base as well and have for decades before we invaded them, but us being around helped encourage the change, as when they asked us about things they could do better, the name kept coming up.

So as part of our conversation about arranging for the special documentation, my trans status came up. He was looking at my chart and noticed that they had no pronouns listed for me. Apparently they'd added a standardized pronoun slot to the forms in the last decade, but I've been out so long, they'd missed me. We had a conversation about them in which my choice of "ze, zir, zim" caused rather a bit of confusion as he'd not heard them and couldn't figure out at first that'd I'd understood and was answering. (They had they as one of the expected options, but he wasn't as up on other non-binary variants). Anyway, he was fine and my chart is updated and he's expected to call back tomorrow about my documentation for the bureaucracy, which is fine. Mostly I just wanted to say how impressed I am at how hard those cisfolk down at the poverty clinic are trying to do things right and how open they are to evolving to fit the needs of a population that is extremely underserved every where.

Revaunchist forces may be trying to beat us down and take our basic rights from us and kill us, but people who decided to stand up for what's right voted in Transfolk in Virginia and Minneapolis this month, and at the downtown poverty clinic I can have a calm adult conversation about non-binary pronoun options with a cis-person admin at a local clinic that is doing it's damnedest to keep my people healthy and make them feel respected.

* Tavy had his first serious oops for the season today. One would think from his personality, that he'd be a terror with Gothmas ornaments and nothing in Halloweentown would be safe, but he is as careful as he can reasonably be given his disability and while he does tip over halloween village people with his feet, it's clearly accidental and the larger items and the Halloween trees/ornaments are safe. Tonight he messed up a jump and sent the Halloweeen globe, a ceramic pumpkin and some village people flying, but nothing was broken and it was very load and scary for him so he got a nice cuddle. Seriously, he tries so hard, and I am honestly impressed we got all the way to Thanksgiving week without mishap.

* So it looks like Tom Petty really is dead. The premature announcement that distressed his family was a shitty thing to do, which is why I just posted some of his music on Tumblr Monday night, but the Tuesday confirmation looked solid. I keep thinking about the way my sister and I felt about "Don't Come around here no more." There was feminist protest at the imagery, but talking amoung ourselves, we thought it was a pretty accurate depiction of how it felt for her to be a girl in our culture. To us the changing proportions symbolized the way women and girls were constantly dealing with rules endlessly changed to disadvantage them. We took the carving up like cake to be a pretty solid indictment of the competing demands and expectations on girls and women and the way men so often treat women as objects to be consumed. My Sister and I watched that video and we Sympathized with Alice, not the Hatter, whereas a lot of people read it as endorsement of patriarchy. More proof that anything can mean anything depending on on's point of view.

In any case, it sounds like he had really gotten his life together and was having a great time, and I am sorry for his friend and family left behind.
