* Sometimes when other Olds are complaining about young people and their phones, I think about the Student Union at my first college in the days just before email happened to ordinary people.

It was a very small school and the student union was basically a very large basement, with an eatery, a mail room, and a bunch of seating areas. The mail room was central and four times a day they delivered mail. You might ask, "How was there enough mail to deliver four times a day, when the post office delivers once a day?" Most of it was junk. You got the real mail once a day and the rest was fliers and things for activities, messages from Profs or other students, that sort of think. Most of it went right into the conveniently placed recycling bins.

I admit, like everyone else, I'd turn up for the big distribution of outside mail as you had to catch package delivery when the window was open, and given the poor taste and nutritional value of the crap in the cafeteria, something edible from home was a Big Deal.

Four times a day though, the students would gather if they weren't in class in the seating areas closest to the mail boxes. Some benighted souls would hover, hover, right in front of their boxes, listening excitedly for the squeak of the sort cart and the rustle of the student workers on the other side, eyes fixed on the tiny box window.

These people knew perfectly well that the other three deliveries were 80-90% junk mail. They sat or stood, desperate as baby birds waiting for the worm anyway.

People haven't changed, they are just waiting for a ping instead of a squeak and rustle.

Human nature is human nature. I think a lot of people from before email and texts are forgetting that they too have run to the mailbox when they saw the USPS truck or mail person put stuff in, or dove for the letters lot hoping for something good, or hovered by a campus mail slot knowing odds were it was all or mostly trash. I try not to forget that, even though I stopped hovering after a week or so, even though if I check my email more than once a day it's a lot, even though I don't text. Who the fuck are we too judge? We've all done the analog version even if we aren't currently doing the digital and I feel like a lot of people who were email users but not frequent texters are pretending we all didn't refresh email like 8 times a day in the '90's.

* Saturday we wore ourselves out with necessary errands. I needed algae wafers for the plecoes and some special girl food to tide Livia over. They had her shreds but not her kibbles there. (As I bought the last two bags of kibbles at the local last month, she likely has about a month of kibbles left, but with today I think the bird flu may have fucked the cat food supply and for Livia, the choice is a small number of turkey dominant limited ingredient foods or going back on the even more expensive prescription stuff. There are three more places I could try left, but gas is low and two of them are further out and one is super expensive.

All this is made worse by Livia having what is likely a psychiatric crisis, but could be early signs that her renal system may be failing again. Let us hope it's psychiatric, because that won't kill her and I think she's doing a little better tonight. There have been a lot of visitors and schedule disruptions, plus me being sick. That's a lot of stress for a cat who super extra is bad at change and gets stressed easily. Her urine remains normal, but her high anxiety behaviors aren't that different from the behaviors the time she almost died when she was a little over a year old, so I worry. She was eating almost normally tonight, so I'm still in the likely stress camp. *fingers crossed*

Anyway, OTC was right next to the way too hot pet supply store. I somehow miscalculated the tax again and also forgot surgical masks, of which I have nearly run out. @$&#!

The good cheap ethical grocery is right there, so I used the motor cart because most of me wasn't working well at this point. Inevitably, I forgot some things, but there were tiny oranges on sale and I have partially restocked some essentials.

My nails are doing almost okay for the first time in ages, so Goth Millennial painted them a subtly sparkly purple for me, just in time for social stuff with some of the Millennials.

I'm still not really caught up from all the spring car repairs. I am already seeing way more things I can't not buy like gas, litter, and probably kibbles and we are moving into the super expensive part of the year (September-January), where I have a bunch of extra things I can't not do like the oil/radiator thing my car now needs every six months, tabs, housing tax, Gothmas season). I had such high hopes when the COLA went up in January, but between the car and the extra electrical costs... yeah.

I'm not drowning. Not yet. It's been two straight years of everything breaking. I could sure use a year of nothing breaking. This was the first summer since the start of the pandemic I didn't need surgery in the summer. Let's hope the car and apartment follow suit.

You know the terribly landlords I've had? I've rented from both of these. Landmark is the one that:

1. Tried to double cash my rent check, then charge me late and return fees because i didn't have enough money in my account to pay a second rent I didn't actually owe them on the grounds that "Once you give us a check there is no law stopping us from cashing it as often as we want. Luckily my bank was willing to fight them tooth and nail and in the end they had to pay my bank fees also. (Seriously I still do not understand how this is legal.)

2. Fought us over every repair then took our deposit because we had not paid an outside contractor to fix things like plumbing.

3. Never changed carpets on any units between tenets. They were nasty, torn, stained, and moldy. We noted this on move in sheets. They charged us to replace the carpets when we left, then didn't change them so they could pull the scam on the next tenets, which i discovered when i went to get a mis-delivered package from the second rental we had from them.

4. Black mold constantly bloomed on the walls, carpeting and ceiling.

5. The stairs were rotting wood and shaky. One day the railing came off in my hand. They reluctantly replaced it with naked, uncured wood. No weather coating or paint or shellac, just pine bits they bought at some hardware store. the same happened when my leg went through a rotted stair board.

6. a neighbor kid fell on some of the rusted rebar they had sticking up randomly in the front yard. A slightly different fall would have pierced something vital. They not only refused to pay medical bills, they refused to remove the rebar. Every time I tottered down the railing-less cement stairs where the kid fell I would look at the foot high rebar spike and wonder if my eye or neck or heart would be next.

7. The floor was spongy in the entry way when we moved in, something we expressed concern about and noted on the move in form. They said it was normal and nothing was wrong with it. The ceiling in the front wall leaked at that same second and last rental. We reported it and the electrical danger it was posing as the stair light out front was wired through it and it was a lot of water. This was because they improperly installed the balcony above, compromising the wall and ceiling. They insisted this was our responsibility to pay to fix even though it was preexisting and clearly nothing to do with us. They refused to fix it and threatened to charge us for it if we didn't fix the balcony in the upstairs unit, wall, leaks, and wiring for them. (I have no idea how this is legal, but here we are. We knew we weren't getting a penny of deposit back anyway.)

Remember the spongy floor? Right under the water rivulets coming through the ceiling. One day squirrel's leg went through. He could have died as it would have been an entire story drop onto the foundation if both legs went through. They refused responsibility for medical bills and tried to get us to pay to fix it, which we refused. The workmen came and were horrified. The reason the floor was spongy was there was no wood under it. I was impressed unsupported linoleum lasted the three or so years before it gave way. They said the entire underside of the building was rotting away similarly.

It took most of the week for them to replace the massive section of floor they had to remove, since they had to put in make shift pillars and such underneath and shore up the rotting floor, using our two man sized hole. we were terrified a cat would jump in there and get trapped. I couldn't get safely over the hole so I was trapped in the black mold riddled house with my failing lung patient lungs. Squirrel had to work, so he kept having to step carefully over it over and over. I am still amazed he survived.

Eventually, they put naked plywood over the hole and we never saw them again. We could lift the plywood plank with our fingers it not being nailed down. It would stake as I walked over it. They tried to charge us thousands of dollars to replace it even though we pointed out none of this was in anyway our fault. Odds are it's still dragging my credit store down.

8. They did replace the balcony eventually and plug the holes, but they never touched the wall with the wiring that was sodden through every time it rained until they did. I never trusted that light switch, so we simply had no porch light. Want to bet it is all black mold inside?

Families are still living there.

All of this is completely legal as there is no authority anywhere that stops it.

* Sunday, I made the mistake of absentmindedly lifting some things after the head Millennial went home. I realized what I was doing fairly early and started icing right away. I likely would have been okay if Tavy hadn't kept insisting he was allowed to sleep with his whole weight on my wound. I kept trying to discourage this and redirect him to less damaging positions. He kept pretending to comply and then creeping back onto the non-load bearing area of my body the moment I'd drift off. I'd catch him mid-creep and redirect him back to safe, bonier areas like my ribs.

Eventually, he "won." He landed with his whole weight on one paw directly to my wound. I woke up just early enough to anticipate the pain, but not prevent it. I yelled because it really fucking hurt, terrifying him, so it was a pyrrhic victory for the Emperor.

I iced it, but it was bad. I just managed to stay out of the ER and I'm a bit better, but still a mess.

* We are planning to use most of squirrel's tax rebate to get a working oven, but the dishwasher is also broken. (The dishwasher is a safety thing because I am medically fragile. * Tuesday: The shot still hurts, but is diminishing. The original joint pain itself is dramatically better, though still twingey. The secondary and tertiary pain associated with it that had basically taken over my head and shoulder is down to the more acute secondary areas. I had a brutal headache all evening, but given the extreme pain levels the last couple of weeks I'm not particularly concerned at present, though I'm monitoring that situation because pandemic.

Assuming I didn't catch covid at the specialist office this was very much worth it.

* Wednesday: My suspicion that the headache and general crappiness was temporary and likely connected to extreme pain and shoulder treatment is looking correct. I am learning the new geography of my pain. I hurts terribly if I touch the joint, and I still have limited Range of motion, with extreme pain if I do something stupid like try to adjust a pillow Or get a plate out of the cabinet in the kitchen, but tping is a lot easier and I can carry buckets if I don't ttry to lift them above my waist, which trust me is still helpful for the fish and plants. I am finding weird pockets of stabbypain within the general duller pain that is my head neck and torso, like islands of no in an unpleasant lake, but this is bearable. Last week wasn't.

I'm am still really worn out from ll of it and my bdy decared a spasm night, which is no particular surprise given the givens.

I'm still fighting the piss pond situation in the fish tank area. someone started pissing half on half off the pad, in such volume that it was getting up under the pad and making puddles. Itried a double sizze pad under the belief that someone standing in the box would have to piss on the pad, Right? Wrong. They pissed half on, half off the pad again, despite one of the edges being a Livia and a half body length from the closest box edge. so it's not accidental. It's now escalated to massive piss pools that I'm too disabled to cope with at the rate and volume we are discussing.

Both front boxes were cleaned and I did a no pad experiment. Woke to find an epic piss lake again. Sigh. all four boxes are now clean. I switched out the office box for the open box that seems to be the issue. The open box is on a piss pad where I can monitor it when I'm working. IDK. On the upside whoever is doing it is very well hydrated and not pissing blood.

* The cats are being sooooo labour intensive. Tavy peed in the middle of the sofa Monday night. We stayed up to get the car out of hock. When we got home, exhausted, someone had puked on my bed five times. luckily, Squirrel hadn't gone to bed quite, so I had help. we had to strip to the mattress and remake the thing. Tavy missed the box while I was asleep, then hit the sofa again while I was plating up my food. Three loads of laundry in like 24 hours. I've had to do so many this last week. The Imperial couple got the medicine finger and I've been watching the damned sofa like a hawk as I was out of clean and dry pee covers. I had to clean the bottom of the litter box even.

On the upside, the city received two bids for renovations, and they approved the project, so I am for real getting nearly everything fixed. I'm going to have properly working plumbing. I'll be able to stop worrying about the water heater. The doors are getting fixed. The dying microwave/hood and bathroom fans are going. The broken fake fireplace is leaving and i'm getting that space back.

It's going to be a nightmare moving and boxing up things to make renovation space, but it's going to be worth it. I love that I live in a city that invests in keeping elderly and disabled people in their homes.

* Everybody loves the 80.00 a bag prescription kibbles. This is not sustainable. Livia's whole illness, I've been quietly collecting the sample kibbles they have in front of the pet supply store. (One is allowed two a time). Every time I'm in the shopping center, I steal two. I don't feel bad about it since I'm for real shopping for a high end limited ingredient grain free kibbles, so I am using them to try out different brands. This one has had a mixed reaction, but is also half the price of prescription. I estimate I have until November to decide at current consumption rates.

* Monday, I had a short nap between working on the news and the coming of the lady from the city. It sounds like I for real might be getting the doors and the plumbing fixed and I may get a new water heater out of it. I've a list of things I need to still do to make that happen, plus people coming to do estimates. Fingers crossed, because this could change everything. For those just tuning in, it's a program that fixing things so elderly and disabled people can stay in their homes. I'm fine as long as I never, ever move. Since I'm planning to leave feet first, this should be fine.

I then stayed up for forage, because things were getting desperate as far as bread and vegetables, since I'd gone something like a week and a half without. Once things were squared away, I slept and slept. The crud is settling in my lungs again, I think.

I'm not going to attempt a sleep reset, since I have a Wednesday dentist appointment.

Let's hope I manage the bureaucracy today, shall we?
