* One of the things we got out of last week's marathon bureaucracy is Goth Millennial is getting paid to be my aid again. We also carved out eight hours a month for New Millennial. They started getting paid for their work Wednesday.

Let us hope I get to keep my home care aid hours. We should find out soon.

I took them both on Wednesday errands, which was delightful. I used the motorized cart and spent as much time as possible while waiting things in the car with my seat reclined, reading. When we got back I was exhausted, but we also needed to do a full sofa change for the second day in a row because the emperor is being above and beyond destructive just now.

Them: I haven't seen you this exhausted after errands in months.
Me: I kept having to use all the spoons last week. There is a price for that.

This is a reminder for those of you who are not disabled or are recently disabled that this is what pushing through DOES when you are disabled. Yes, the Millennials got their job stuff sorted out and I'm re-certified as still disabled (Every five years I need to prove to various agencies that my spine hasn't spontaneously regenerated to a pristine state, nor my joints, nor my lungs.) and I've shored up my SSI stuff best I can, and we got the cleaning done in time for both inspections, etc., etc. But I'm pretty much going to be fucked physically for a couple of weeks and I got way behind on EVERYTHING last week because there wasn't anything left most days so I kept going to bed hungry and very early and didn't do the stuff I can normally manage.

I am going to be paying and paying and paying.

Tavy did get a nice cuddle nap on me, then go sit on Goth Millennial for a while for pettins until the humans needed to rearrange themselves for dinner.

I suspect paypal allowed a secret autowithdraw again at exactly the wrong time, which I will need to track down, as a bill I'd scheduled to pay with more than enough money in the account rather suddenly caused an overdraft. (I checked it wasn't Amazon prime randomly reactivating again, but it's a pain in the ass finding the right tab on paypal. I will do that next.) I had some cash I'd socked away at the beginning of the month in case I needed it for inspection cleaning. I put it back in in time to patch the hole, but when Insuarnce auto-withdraws hit, I am fucked. I think $70.00 would cover those plus fees.

* I was recently discussing how conservative TV Shows are when it comes to abortion and have been for some time, and I referenced how when I was a kid the sit-com Soap aired a scene where three women sat around a kitchen table in the middle of the night having an adult conversation about whether one of them should have an abortion.

I get it, I really do. Most people do not get read 19th century lit as bedtime stories from the age of three. I grew up weird. I automatically switch idiom, but for people who don’t have eccentric teachers for parents, this is bizarre and hilarious.

* Friday: I got my vaccine appointment! First shot is Monday! As a result do not expect postings on Monday after 9AM Pacific, as I have to go at an inconvenient time in my sleep cycle and I expect the shot to exhaust me. My plan is to pick up my library curbside after then go right home to bed and stay there

In other medical news my doctor won the second appeal over a higher dosage of a med Medicare hates paying for at all on Wednesday afternoon. It came late Thursday afternoon. There is already improvement.

In yet more medical news, I got test results back about fifteen minutes after the vaccine appointment scheduling. They are likely going to need to investigate my whole digestive system, a thing I dread as I remember what it was like when they did some of that in the 90's. I also am not even a little surprised in needs doing. Sigh. Trying set up appointments is next week's problem though.

Bonus? I lost hours of work I a hard crash and had to rewrite this amoung all the rest. Sigh.

* I watched Peninsula and I figured out what went wrong.

1. The obvious thing I guessed before I watched it, is a problem, but not the main one. Still, it needs saying: The Train to Busan is a perfect movie. It really is. The solid world building makes the thing compelling from the start. It's beautifully shot and acted. It has a strong thematic thread running through it. The timing is flawless, with action and quiet moments in a perfect balance designed to keep the viewer engaged. Most of all, it has heart. The viewer really cares what happens to the people, and those character stories are perfectly twined with the thematic thread. It's incredibly compelling and rewatchabe.

It is absolutely impossible to catch that kind of magic in a sequel. Viewers will want to feel that way again and you can't win no matter what you do. You can do the same thing again, which will be tired and derivative. you can do something different which will inevitably disappoint and/or piss off fans. It's why second albums are often a mess too. So they started this project with that against them.

2. But here is the real mistake: They picked the wrong protagonist. No really. If one hadn't watched Train to Busan this would have been a solid post apocalyptic action story with a really long boring start. Picture Escape from New York and Road warrior mashing up with a Korean Speculative Fiction Movie. It's the long boring bit that is the issue for this as a stand alone set in the same world as Train to Busan and Seoul station, and it isn't the actors' faults.

Why doesn't the first part of the movie work? Because they picked the wrong protagonist. Think about it. Where is the emotional heart of the movie? Where it always is the best of this kind of film coming out of Korea (For example: The Host, Snowpiercer, Train to Busan, Flu) with the family. It may be small (a parent and daughter) and/or broken and/or found but that's where the heart is. The family add and lose people along the way, but that heart carries the viewer through. When does Peninsula start getting interesting? When the girls turn up and you have the family that's the narrative center for most of the rest of the film.

I'm not saying it's all bad up to that point. There is that beautiful, haunting, Checkov's gun moment on the way in, for example, but mostly? It's filler.

So here's how to fix it. Just put the main narrative focus on the Mom and family. No really. It cuts most of the boring bits right out. Let me show you how.

* I think I wrote this Monday: Tavy and Livia had a rough evening. Late afternoon they chased the grad students doing socially distanced and masked sunbathing off the lawn so they could power wash the gazebo. Tavy thought the workers were hissing and growling at him and he spent a couple of hours sporadically hissing and growling back.

Something's also clearly on fire near enough to us that the nasty smoke smell and lowered air quality are really messing with me.

Then the smoke detector went off, panicking the Imperial couple who ran out to see if I was scared. Long silence. Me: Could it be the smoke? Detector: CHIRP! Imperial couple *panics* I double check to make sure nothing inside could be doing it and turn on the hood and the bathroom vents just in case. Detector: CHIRP! It was too sporadic to be reacting to something. It went off again while I was putting on my shoes.

I bought two new 9 volts braving the store before it closed. Luckily it was sparsely populated and people were following the mandatory mask and distancing order. Luckily, there was just enough left on a card to cover two 9-volts. Let's hope I don't need meds again this month, shall we?

My arm is borked again, but it was finally cool enough for squirrel to sleep, so my unsteady ass climbed the ladder. I had to let go the lintel to futz with it and it still wasn't fixed. I made multiple attempts. I ended up waking him after all. Turned out it was my bedroom detector a couple feet away from the one I was trying to fix. Or possibly both of them. IDk. We spent an hour between us. I had two cats hiding under my desk for most of it. I had to go collect Elder kitty from the top of the thirty in the middle of it, as those lights are fragile and I'm scared she'll fall. (The light on the twenty she sits on is sturdier and the tank is a lot lower. She can get on and off easily. I've seen her thinking about trying to straight jump off the thirty). I've had to do this once or twice most nights since her stroke.

The Imperial couple did eventually come out to lounge around the livingroom where they could see me and each other, but they are jumpy. While I was writing this, I blew my nose, and Tavy jumped high in the air sideways off the sofa landing about 5 feet away, terrifying poor Livia who couldn't work out which way to run.

* Wednesday: I had that thing where when I tried to get up the first time I almost threw up from the pain. I opted for extra medication and comforting the Imperial couple, who are understandably distressed. Livia in particular is taking it hard. At one point she was wandering around the area where elder kitty died squeaking plaintively. Elder kitty had warmed up to her enough that they would hang out together a couple of feet apart just like Livia wanted, and they'd been extra close after the first stroke. She kept waking me up for reassurance, poor thing. Tavy's just generally been discombobulated for the last week and a half and he needed a lot of extra cuddle time this evening.

Once I did make it up there was a lot of cleaning to do. The bed to strip and change, boxes to tend to, livingroom soft furnishings to hand clean and febreeze, and lots of little things I'd been too busy to sort out properly between the ongoing right arm issue and Elder Kitty's rapid decline. There will be more of that tomorrow if my arms are working well enough.

We all miss her.

* Livia still doesn't have much appetite and they are both clingy and unsettled. I can't blame them.

I can't seem to make any headway on the pain situation. It's my own fault; I keep moving in my sleep. I'm usually more disciplined than this. I think it's a bit of a spiral. I was undisciplined a couple weeks ago once, which made me feel crap so it's harder to remember to stay still after I drift off. When I'm awake I try to roll it back, but even the magic tub can't shave off enough to undo more damage than I do when I sleep. I am out of tricks. I would call the doctor at this point, except I know perfectly well there is nothing to be done, but endure and try to keep my meds down.

The ad was boasting about how he'd made America great Again, as if he hadn't killed so many people by hindering the Covid response, as if he hadn't put kids in cages, killed trans women and children in ICE detention by having his agents refuse them medical care, been more corrupt than the Grant and Harding administrations put together by an order of magnitude, betrayed this country on every level, pursued foreign policy in Russia's interests instead of our own egged on police violence, praised and encouraged NAZIs and loaded his cabinet with them, dismantled systems designed to protect civil and human rights, deliberately packed the courts with incompetence, summoned soldiers and secret police to put down democracy in the capital, shredded the constitution, ripped up environmental protections, broken more laws than I can count, and on and on and on. The only mention of the economy was to brag about it as if we weren't in a recession with small businesses permanently shuttered all over the country and worse to come. I just... Can Republicans hear themselves? Do they have working eyes or ears or some other way to absorb information from the world around them. How is this hellscape of mostly self created disaster better than what we had four years ago?

And they are showing this in a college town in a blue state. O.o I legitimately thought it was a parody.

* The Georgia Primary: Oh look! Most of the voting machines in black areas weren't working and at least one place they only had one worker to check people in and sanitize. Hours of waiting in long lines, but not in white areas! After all there's a pandemic on! They also didn't give poll workers passwords to operate the machines so it took a couple hours after open to start the voting in some plces.

Oh and they didn't bother sending out a whole lot of the requested absentee ballots. Fucking Wonder if the applications for those are in the same drawer as the one where Kemp kept all those voter registrations from black majority districts instead of processing them so he could fix the election last time.

Oh and the new voting machines that don't work? Kemp overrode the non-partisan choice to give it to his campaign manager's company even though they weren't remotely qualified for the job.

Meanwhile, Iowa had record June primary turnout last week because it was all mail in. Republicans are moving to ban it so they can force people to vote in person in a pndemic in November.

* There's no fighting it. The battery is no good. He used the external charger and it seemed fine, until I tried to start it a second time and it was fully drained. I am pretty sure we replaced it a couple of years ago, but here we are.

Wednesday I had to stay up for some phone bureaucracy. Thursda I need to stay up for the mechanic and to all the HOA because they senta form letter complaint about the patio garden. As it's the same stuff that hasn't bothered them for years and I'm following the rules, I don't know what they want us to change, which means live humans on the phone in their shitty short business hours. Plus food shipment may be coming.

I'm so tired.

On the upside, the food card came.

Update: They are having construction, but it's half the price of the other option and I hardly ever leave the house, so we're dropping it off for Monday. I'd already paid first bill, but not second. The other option is twice as expensive and this is an ancient car and I am poor.
