* I was good and did a couple of hours of phone bureaucracy mid-sleep cycle on Friday. It was a bunch of phone tag, mostly, plus social worker check in. I got a health care cancellation letter Thursday. My suspicion it was the SSI COLA auto cancelling every elderly and disabled person in the state again was correct. Apparently no one had informed the local office. They caught it in a day or two, but in the gap, some machine somewhere was spewing out cancellation letters. The guy at the local office recognized me and the situation from last year and I recognized him to. Apparently, I was the first to call it in, so they are about to have 2-3 weeks of panicky people calling in over losing their health care abruptly, poor bastards, on top of all the end of year paperwork and all the end of year re-ups. Really, they need to move the ceiling up to 900.00 a month then tie it to cola, so they don't cause this panic every year. Sigh.

My broken toe is starting to heal. (I broke it...Saturday? Sunday?) It's the annoying fragile one I wish they would just amputate it. I didn't break it in half, but it was an above average painful break. Anyway, it is no longer doing the nasty grinding sensation and has moved on to simply hurts, which I handle better, so yay me.

Squirrel accidentally knocked over plants bringing forage in today. The plant he for sure killed was nearly dead anyway and I hadn't much hope, and the other plants were near the end of life, which I'd prolonged by bringing it inside. The one that had been still producing last week is hanging on, which is all that matte5red, since the others were ready for seed harvesting.

Poor Livia had a hairball this morning and spent a dramatic hour finding exciting and annoying places to blerp. The meanest meanie who ever meaned gave a medicine finger and her appetite was excellent this evening, so I think it's sorted.

* So Wednesday, we had inspection and the window was literally anytime before noon. My initial plan was to try to nap in my clothes, but city liaison guy wanted to come over and take pictures. The result was that i was fading fst by the time the inspector showed up just before noon. Because of course.

Sleep was no good as the people above us apparently are doing yet more renovations, this time including them ripping out all the old carpets (They were throwing them off the balcony and workmen were carrying them away between 11-noon) and replacing them with who knows, but the result was, exactly when Squirrel and I were trying to crash power tools, hammers, random thumps, drills, etc. right over our heads, terrifying my cats. The hammers were the worst, because I'd drift off during the quiet gaps and then flail awake to three loud bangs, which my sleeping self would take for someone at the door, since I'm the one for the last three decades who was a light enough sleeper to hear delivery persons pounding on various apartment doors i've lived in with assorted people. Three loud bangs is right up there with unexpected person in my room to wake me from a sound slumber and have me on my wobbly pins before my brain has caught up. (I'm fine with cats going in and out. I've had roommates and lovers go in and out over the years and no problem, but if someone my sleeping brain doesn't expect wanders in, no matter how quiet? Up I go. No, it's not trauma, it my sensory wiring). Some of the machinery was right over my head and unbearable loud and the imperial couple couldn't figure out where to hide since it was everywhere: both bedrooms, both bathrooms, kitchen, living room. Except for that one day towards the beginning of our renovation, there was always a quiet room for beasties to hide in from invading monsters making scary sounds. Not Wednesday. They have been understandably clinging since.

By the time I managed to drag myself out of bed to do shreds time and take a good bath it was very late. The bath is super helpful with the pain, but wears be the fuck out, so I needed a rest and the Imperial couple needed reassurance. Then we had a major outage of everything but the electricity. No TV, Internet, phone. Fun! I still needed to feed cats (kibbles), the fish, and myself; take meds; do lungs; set up meds try, take more meds.... I felt crappy from the infection and was still tired and there was no sign of Internet etc. coming back, so I gave up and went back to bed.

Today Tavy went to great lengths to keep me in bed, but I needed to do pharmacy run, and change books and make photocopies at the library, and drop my bureaucracy packet off at the courthouse, where it turned out they were getting a steady drip of elderly and disabled people doing their tax freeze reup. They were very sweet and patient, which is good, because I literally couldn't work out how do do sections of the paperwork. I threw myself on their mercy. Apparently everyone does because no one knows what the fuck three of the questions are asking. Like seriously one line was referring to a line that does not exist on a modern 1040 tax return and two had multiple clauses with double negatives where I could think of more than one thing they might be asking.

Tomorrow is the blood work appointment, which is good because none of the usually tricks are working on the infection. So remember the list of things that could be going on with my body? It turned out it was the sinus infection I've had since late December/early January ramping way the fuck up and helpfully colonizing neighboring bits of me. So my lungs are back in play (wet cough and definitely bacterial), and I'm gearing up for a couple of ear infections which is annoying af. The right one is further along. I am not having much luck heading it off, though I suspect I've slowed it down.

So not coronavirus or at least not yet, which is good, because Squirrel and I re both in the 15% death rate or higher categories. On the upside, I had a chat with squirrel and his work is taking solid preventative measures. Odds are it'll get there anyway, because people have to go home, shop, etc., but they are trying which is honestly all I ask. If 45 had let the CDC handle things instead of over riding them in hopes it'll kill people like me off, I wouldn't be angry. Pandemic roulette is pandemic roulette. There is no safe, but what I want me government to do in an outbreak, epidemic, or pandemic is to take rational steps based on science to halt or at least slow the spread as much as possible and to provide accurate information. I am angry because Republicans decided to do the opposite of that on purpose. I am angry because slower spread is way the fuck better because it cuts down on shortages of equipment and materials necessary to save lives and allows for more pathogen specific training and planning.

But for now I feel like crap and am a day behind on everything before I even started this evening, but I am not dangerously sick, just pain in the ass sick.

* Re: Kavanaugh's calendars. Admittedly, I'm a bit younger, so high School was '84-'86, but the tech was the same. Excluding things like school dances of which I attended a total of three including less than an hour at Senior Prom, my calendars didn't show any of the parties I went to. Oh, you'd get work/sports/enrichment scheduling, but for the sort of parties where people were drinking? My boys would be like: Hey! There's a party after work or tonight or whatever. And I'd be like: Sure. Why don't I drive. (This was because I didn't drink or smoke and that way I could make sure my knuckleheaded friends/lovers would get home okay.) Why the fuck would I, an intelligent teenager, be leaving evidence lying around my parents house that I was about to be at a party where everyone else was going to be plastered and or high as fuck? And half the time they'd be telling me night of in person anyway and my calendar was at home because it was the '80's and calendars were all paper.

Anyway, my point is, as someone who was a teen in the time period before the World Wide Web and when cell phones were huge, just phones, and only for rich assholes, I find it way more likely that any drunken parties he was going to were word of mouth than otherwise. Just saying. like I never once saw one of my friends or one of the very Kavanaugh like assholes at my school whip out a physical calendar and write down when and where they planned to get drunk that weekend.

* Please, please, please if you can manage it, contact your Senators to get them to fight the Kavanaugh nomination. This is geometrically more important if you have a centrist Democrat like Joseph Manchin, Joe Donnelly, Doug Jones, Jon Tester, and Heidi Heitkamp; or Republicans like Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, Bob Corker, Jeff Flake, Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski. (For Flake, Corker, Collins, and Murkowski please call for a proper independent investigation by the FBI and a return to normal Senate procedure in cases like this. For Scott and Rubio emphasize Kavanaugh's racism and support for racial profiling, for Collins and Murkowski emphasize the right to chose, the nominee allegedly having attempted to violently rape someone, and the Jane Doe case where he tried to force a raped immigrant teen to carry against her will, With Murowski, you might also mention his opposition to programs benefiting Alaska Natives). Jeff Flake of Arizona may be softening! Please, if you are from Arizona, keep the pressure on! Contact Chuck Schumer and ask him to whip the Democrats so as to get them to stand in united opposition. It wouldn't hurt to demand your Republican Senators call for a proper FBI Background investigation. They won't, but pressuring them shows them there might be consequences.

* Livia's no good very bad day: It started out fine. The Imperial couple realized I was bathing before bed and sensibly retired to my room for pre-Bedtime naps. I found them there: her cradled on the body pillow up near the head of the bed, him making a comfortable donut at the foot, just waiting for me to come to make him a leg mest for the real bedtime. They were so comfortable that thee was no milling about when I got into bed. Everyone had their back stroked and when back to dozing while i did things like reconfigure pillows and take the just beore sleep meds. I read a couple of chapter of Ms. McGuire, then I turned off the light. Tavy climbed on to my legs in expectation of hours of stillness. Livia pressed very gently against me. Peaceable Kingdom achieved. Minutes later? The phone.

It was the management company wanting to do an emergency fire inspection. This is no surprise. Last Spring the alarms all started going off when Squirrel showered if he forgot to turn on all the fans. I called, but nothing came of it and I did not want to press too hard as they might charge us for it instead of fixing it. We changed all the batteries and it happens less often, and it's yet another inconvenience we've had to learn to live with. Last Thursday it went off because I made pasta, even though the hood fan was on, which means the one right in front of my room with the brand new battery is now doing it too, in response to ordinary amounts of steam. Apparently every time the alarm goes off here to punish us for showering and cooking, it triggers something at the management company office. It's been getting way worse, so i bet it's happening all over my floor, the detector system all being the same age. Apparently the flashy lights went off so often this past week, they've decided to stop ignoring it.

So emergency fire inspection today, with a minimum one hour warning, but more likely in the afternoon. Somehow, the cats did not scatter despite the phone, and were still there when I was done warning Squirrel he had to clean his room for inspection Right Now. They did scatter in terror when he jiggled his dector to make sure it was properly seated after the last time he had to pull it when itwouldn't stop screaming about him taking a shower. Good bye peacable kigdom, hello hiding closet for cats. They called with a two hour afternoon window, which I went to inform Squirrel of. I cleaned the mess on the kitchen floor made by him taking out the garbage the night before. (This is fine and not a complaint. He does the carrying and lifting because I can't without seriously endangering myself. I clean because I'm the one notices what needs cleaning and knows how best to do it. I'm also the one with the list of cleaning supplies in my head and who knows what we have and what we need to buy next month. This division of labor is agreed on and very, very logical, being based on who is good at what. So again, not a complaint). I go back to bed and set the alarm so I will for sure be wearing trousers as they are like to hit us very early in the inspection window. I do get some crappy, interrupted sleep, and the beasts do eventually come back to the bed.

I get the clothes on and am lying there in the dusk of my room on an Autumn afternoon trying to decide if I should read or try to nap when they come. The Imperial Couple hides in the closet from the Strangers. Tavy will stay on the bed if the voices are familiar, but these were not voices he recognized, so from the perspective of the Cats, we were being Invaded by Cat Eating Trolls, some of them in Kitty Stomping Work Boots. *shudder*

I told them the saga of the smoke detectors. They decided they battery units need replacing, but the flashy light thing is probably fine, since it was getting triggered by the assholish detectors. They say they'll get back to me, likely with better warning. I went back to bed, talking in the comfort voice, so the cats would know it's over. Tavy came right out and got his pettin and went back to sleep in the leg mest. It took Livia several chapters to venture out for her pettin and her nap on the body pillow.

I missed forage of course, having opted for several hours of crappy sleep over getting dressed right then and going out. I had meant to go get meds, but I couldn't bear to disturb the beasts so soon. I did end up going for the library loop and to see if that case I ordered beginning of the month was ready to be picked up. It was not. Sigh.

I am worn thin like a tiny bit of butter on too much bread. The cats have mostly recovered from sirens and strangers, though there has been a degree of understandable extra cling. LM has been roaming the house between naps, cursing at kittens these days and soaking up short pettins. I suspect I will be low energy, but I will make an effort to address the latest firehouse of horror spewing out of D.C.

* I know Librarians is meant to be silly and the last episode was pretty, but I am having some really big problems with their mythology. Humans had colour and creativity long before the Library of Alexandria was formed. I simply can't swallow that everything was dull, unimaginative and lifeless until a particular library was built in North Africa under a Macedonian Dynasty. It doesn't pass the smell test. There was a long history of art and literature in Meopotamia, Egypt, India, and China, before that first scroll went into it's cubbyhole at the Library. It's just... too big and patently false a nonsense to swallow. Also, I'd been side eyeing the Mediterranean civilization hegemony here. Shouldn't there be a counterweight library somewhere in, say, China or India, given the age and literacy of those civilizations? While travel from Western Europe to India was hard until relatively recently, there was thriving trade from Eastern Africa to Eastern Asia with the subcontinent as a hub. Could the library make doors to cities in countries not mentioned in it's tomes? How would librarians know to go there, wouldn't a second, waaaay older library make sense? What of the Americas? Would first Century north African or European Librarians be traveling to continents they had no idea existed? How could the Library have the level of influence alleged there? What of Australia, New Zealand, etc.? Again, completely unsuspected to the rest of the world until relatively recently. It is looking more and more like the oral tradition of the indigenous Australians may be alarmingly accurate further back than writing existed. How do oral traditions on that scale and civilizations that old with that much continuity fit into the world building.

I just... The library is too new and too geographically specific, and so much Art and literature and creativity existed before the Library of Alexandria was a thing, and it's gotten impossible to ignore this season what with the Librry's back story and effects on the world being too large and Universal. The Dark Ages were that super specific thing that happened in Greece when Mycenaean culture collapsed so thoroughly that they forgot how to write and suddenly the people trying to make ceramics clearly only vaguely knew how pots were made because nearly all the professional potters were dead. The European "Dark Ages" was a thing Early Modern Era historians did where they labelled everything they didn't like Medieval and Every thing they did like Renaissance and then labelled a big chunk of history the Dark Ages to contrast it with their own time which they labelled enlightenment. Yes, things got pretty chaotic for a while in particular spots in Europe, but even where things were pretty bad, people still wrote books, and civilization trundled on just fine in Ireland and the eastern Roman Empire, and pretty much the whole rest of the world. There was never any whole world dark ages, so that warring librarians catastrophe story makes zero sense from a World historical perspective. Occasionally a particular civilization or section of a civilization will crash and burn, but there has not yet been a world wide catastrophe. And again, take a look at how complex and colorful world art and literature are before the founding of the Library of Alexandria, so the causation does not make any sense and I couldn't stop worrying at it that whole last episode, which meant that it was hard to focus on what was on the screen.

It was better not knowing the larger show mythology, because everything crumbles when you do, like a meringue one has taken a hammer to. I get it, it's a silly show and not intended for thinking thoughts, but they've exceeded the suspension of disbelief, and I'm not sure I can get mine back after this season.

* Russia is now claiming that Turkey's aggressive campaign to stop oil smuggling in the last year and their fighting against Daesh is all a clever ruse to hide them buying oil from Daesh. Meanwhile, Russian ally Assad is doing it openly, and in such quantity that he is their best customer. *side eye*

* So they found out what happened to that Air Asia flight. It seems that Air Asia refuses to do proper maintenance on their planes. The air rudder on this plane had gone out 23 times in the year previous to the crash, but rather than fix it properly, they kept bodging in back together badly. Pilots lodged repeated complaints that the plane wasn't safe to fly, which the company ignored.

So guess what happened? Yep, the air rudder failed yet again. The pilots, who didn't have the proper training for fixing it, were forced to attempt mid air repairs. In the process of trying to reboot it, they lost autopilot and the plane spiraled down into the ocean before they could stop it, killing all aboard.

I don't know anyone who was on that plane, but I know how angry I am at Air Asia executives just picturing it. I can only imagine how furious the families of the dead are. I wish the families all the best and I hope they get what revenge is available as justice isn't possible in a case like this.

It was Hanyu who completely blew me away though. Yuzuru Hanyu skated the shit out of a brilliant routine based on 10th Century Japan. He's the total package: athleticism and aesthetics. I had chills. It may have been the most beautiful skate I've ever seen. He got the highest score ever in both his short and long program. I officially have a new favorite skater.

* So here's the thing with my mobility. I mostly don't use the crutches in my apartment. I do use one or both on a bad mobility day, but my floor is flat and I don't allow obstructions. I have things I can lean on or grab onto in if my legs lose power briefly. I go barefoot without socks, so I'm not going to slip. I have the crutches or the wheelchair as an option if the pain renders the legs too painful or prone to failing, but mostly, I'm okay. I often don't bother when I'm visiting someone else's place if there are no stairs or obstructions or small children running about. I pick a spot and sit in it, and if I need to move, I quickly find a place to sit. I do hang on to the crutch if it's a large party, as I'm more likely to need it for safety or getting around complicated moving clumps of people.

When I'm outside (curbs, stairs, uneven pavement, random obstructions), I always have at least a crutch, becaue even if I have above average standing leg control, I fall really easily. I absolutely use it inside places like shops or the library, where small unattended children or adult assholes can run into me and knock me down, or places like the post office, where I may have to stand in long lines, which is incredibly painful and burns my steps for the day.

Foraging is the worst of all worlds. You get up to a couple hours of line, most of it with nowhere to sit if I couldn't park close enough for a chair. I often end up sitting on cold wet pavement in the rain if the parking is bad. There are often people smoking in or next to the line, which my scarred up slowly degenerating lungs can't handle which means I may not be able to breathe well and start trying to cough up a lung, smokers generally being to lazy and inconsiderate to move a safe distance away. (I'm not coughing to be an asshole, Smokers. I am coughing because I have a genetic condition that will likely eventually kill me. I'm not the asshole in this situation.) Add to this, that inside is a chaotic environment where people and small minimally supervised children randomly run into you.

So as when I go shopping, I put the crutch in the cart and use the cart as a walker. For the time I'm there, just as at the supermarket, that cart is a mobility devise. The way you can tell is there is a crutch sticking out of the cart. Being me, I try not to be in the way. I do keep the cart really close because I do not like being separated from my crutch in public places, even though often, the thing I'm going to grab if my legs randomly give out or someone knocks into me is likely a counter, a bin, a bit of shelving. When I am public, that crutch is basically an extra, more reliable leg. Yes, even when I'm not using it, because I worry about getting stranded, which was a thing that used to happen towards the end of my teaching career and is a thing that can happen in a chaotic warehouse type environment if you pull my cart and thus crutch away out of reach while I'm grabbing oranges.

So when the man grabbed my cart and pulled it away, I instinctively pulled it back to my hip without turning around. People bump your cart all the time, so I do this all the time without thinking about it because that's my legs and I need them approximate to my hips. Only it wasn't someone carelessly bumping my cart, it was a guy who worked there taking the cart over to where they want able bodied people to put them for the bread section so they are out of the way. Normally they wait until you are ready to enter breads, at which time I say, "I'm using it as a walker," and everything is fine. The guy had jumped the gun. A small tug of war ensued with him talking over me, "I'm just moving it out of the way. I'm not stealing your stuff. You can let go of it. It will be fine over here," and me in my startlement trying to get my phrase out in the gaps about it being a walker. I could see the moment he finally figured out what he was doing (stealing someone's leg). I could tell they'd had sensitivity training for disabilities, as he apologized mentioning he hadn't seen the crutch in a way that suggested he really did get it. I wasn't angry or anything and it was all good.

I am mentioning it because this is a thing that happens. You are sitting somewhere and someone "helps" by moving your crutch somewhere further away. I want to go to the bathroom, and it's gone. Which is alarming. I wouldn't be sitting with it if I didn't need it. I try to prop or tuck it out of the way, but depending on the set up, sometimes it needs moving. It's totally fine to ask me to move the thing. I will happily move the thing, but if you move it for me? I may not know where it is when I needed it, and it's disconcerting. That crutch (or cane or wheelchair) may not be quite as intimate as a prosthesis, but it's still functionally a leg or legs and it is freaky to discover someone's trying to walk off with one of your legs, or worse yet taken it and hidden it, or worse still as happens to wheelchair users all too often, stolen by some asshole able bodied person because they've decided that that person doesn't need it because they had to pee or whatever and left it unattended a few moments.

My little tug of war yesterday was not a big deal, but I thought it would be a good time to remind people to ask before you move a mobility devise. Use your words, or at least a polite gesture and let the person move it themselves. Keep in mind that it's not always obvious that you are looking at a mobility devise. When we took my Gran shopping, I'd go grab her a cart and bring it to the car, so she didn't need to get her walker out. Her being past 90 and not liking to let go the cart was a hint, but a fairly subtle one. Keep in mind that just because someone is not using a mobility devise right this second, doesn't mean they don't really need it. There are all sorts of reasons someone might not be in their chair. They may be able to stand and walk short distances, but have very little safe mobility. (Being able to walk the distance to use a non-wheelchair accessible rest room, doesn't mean they can safely walk to their car.) They may have a condition where every step is agony, but the office or person they need to visit is not wheelchair accessible. They might have crawled off to sit on the grass in the park, which is something wheelchairs are not good at. Those things are expensive. Stealing them is not cool or clever or teaching that person a lesson. It's a serious theft that they may not be able to afford to replace and you could strand someone. DON'T DO IT. If you see any mobility devise? Leave it alone unless you have permission to move it.

Yes, accidents happen, like the thing with my cart and crutch the other day, and if you make a mistake like that, apologize and try to be more careful. That's all I ask.

* All these left people crushing on the Pope make me a little queasy. Not one mentions his repeated virulent hate speech aimed at trans folk. Not one points out that nothing he has done is substantive. Sure, his words aimed at everyone but us are pretty, but he's not gone after the Bishops and Archbishops that protected pedophiles for example. There's a whole list of things like that. Birth control? Still not allowed. Denying women medical care for ectopic pregnancies and miscarriage so that they needlessly die slow horrible deaths even though there is no live fetus to protect? Still sanctioned, nay encouraged. Antigay policies? Still in place. Women Priests? No. It's all pretty speeches and no policy.

Fuck Pope Francis. I'm not a terrorist or a nuclear weapon, and fuck the left for pretending he's anything other than particularly good PR for a church that's just as hateful as it's always been. he's not a true reformer, merely a pretense of reform.

* Today my body vetoed all non-bed related activity until 10:30PM. So: behind on everything. On the upside the largest ebay paid right away, so I've now enough for car insurance +postage in my account again. The rest is going to medical copays to try to stop my being sent to collections when it comes in. I won't have enough to cover all the medical bills, but there is enough for the most important one.

After lungs I did poke about in the Gothmas boxes I had out. I found the tree lights and the large pieces of Halloweentown, but not the ornaments or the small bits. More closet delving is required.
