I kept thinking about the Birthday cake with "Happy Birthday Lesbian" on it after I read the article. I was thinking about the queer children walking past the display case seeing a positive message they may not see much of at home. I was thinking about the first person who came out to me when I was fifteen. It was not really surprise because she was classic butch as it got. English wasn't hr first language and as a result I needed clarification, so I asked if she was lesbian or bisexual. She didn't know either word, so I explained and I will never forget her face.

It was the first time she'd heard a word for herself that wasn't an insult. It meant so much to her to finally have words like that that simply described identity without all the pain and baggage that came with the slurs in her first language.

It was the '80's. I'd been searching the TV guide since I learned to read for anything with a queer person in it, but I had a lot of friends my age who didn't live in homes where they could do that, who had only hate speech or no words at all to accurately describe themselves. There is a reason so many nonbinary folk my age picked "androgyne," since you could find it easily in an elementary library or in TV discussions of fashion trends in the '70's and '80's.

There's a lot more access to words and positive portrayals with the Internet and more distributed viewing of media, but still...

I keep thinking about some kid at the second Dairy Queen, seeing a message someone wrote to her lesbian sister in celebration, and that matters.

* Friday: My suspicion that Poverty clinic mass mailing their COVID vaccine plan a couple days ago was a sign that my state was moving into phase 1B is correct, as I just got a notification from the state that we are. I'm 1B under the state plan, so fingers crossed for me getting one soon.

I stayed up for another round of phone bureaucracy today, plus there were a lot of medical calls incoming. They fixed my car just under the wire. It came in about halfway between lowest and highest estimate and they had to change gaskets and what not while cleaning out the system, but the expensive valve was fine. I suspect they discounted their labour, but I don't know that they did.

I did dishes and too boxes today o top of everything and now have the shakes, but i have a working car and two clean litterboxes, so that's something.
