I’ve stated some form of this over the years any number of times, but in the current climate, I should reiterate it.

My dislike of Netanyahu and his ultra-right positions is specific to Netanyahu because of his ultra-right positions, his corruption, his policies, etc.. His party and allies have policies I oppose, much in the way I oppose Trump and the Republicans, Rishi Sunak (and Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, and every Tory PM back to the much hated Thatcher which was about when I started following UK Politics in real time), Viktor Orbán, Jair Bolsanaro, and a host of other horrible extreme right wing politicians the world over to numerous to list.

This does not and should not be taken for anger at the Israeli left or Jewish people the world over who did not vote for a right wing party in the recent Israeli election. There is a reason my coverage of Israeli politics mostly originates from left leaning Israeli news sources like Haaretz.

There is far too much violent antisemitism in the world right now, far to many politicians of every stripe happy to stoke antisemitism for personal power, far too many antisemitic movements and the like. In my country one of the two political parties with any power proudly embraces it.

This I am furious about and very much wish to fight against.

Please don’t take the recent election in Israel as an excuse to do or say something that harms real people who have nothing to do with it or were actively wanting a better outcome.

It is important to separate a dislike of a particular person for political reasons from a wider attack on a large group living in many countries famously holding a wide variety of beliefs and opinions.

Yes, things are terrible and most democratic politicians haven't enough spine, but they are legitimately trying to fix things. Republicans are out right promising to crash the world economy if they win the house of representatives to force an end to the social safety net. They are promising a national abortion ban and a repeal of civil and human rights for queer folks. Kiss any attempt to stop the planet burning goodbye.

How The “No Child Left Behind” Act Failed on Every Level

When this was passed teachers called it things like “children Left behind” because we could see it was designed to starve neighborhood schools so Republicans could close them, forcing busing to other schools and shifting funding even further away from the schools that need it into charter schools that can bar students who are poor, or not white, or who have limited English, or who have special needs.

This is about de facto segregation. It’s about starving public schools of funds. it’s about excuses to deprive the students with the biggest needs of an education.

All “Back to Basics” school “reforms” are about defending music, art, social studies, and sciences, because Republicans hate anything that keeps children from dropping out and/or teaches critical thinking. Science and social studies teach things like applying logic to real world problems, evaluating evidence, and thinking for yourself. The last thing they want is accurate history or modern science taught to children.

All Republicans want is to create an ignorant easily manipulable permanent underclass that votes for them. Quality Public education in anathema to them.

Republicans keep saying, “you can’t just through money at the problem,” yet never once in the history of this country have we tried funding the schools for the poor at the level we fund schools for the well off. we know objectively that 15-18 students is the sweet spot for class size at all grades. why not for once try paying teachers a living wage and hire enough of them to give every class room the same student/teacher ratios private schools have. How about instead of pennies per student per day we actually buy enough equipment and supplies so that all students get to do hands on science instead of only students who already have all the advantages? How about paying for proper maintenance on schools so the heating works and the pipes don’t bang and the roof doesn’t leak? How about money for computers and library books? How about desks and chairs so every student in every class gets one as well as a locker that closes and locks?

Can’t we try that just once?

Teaching pays about as well as Burger King and teachers owe student loans and need to pay for continuing ed and certification re-upping. They need supplies for themselves and students and a professional wardrobe and money for transportation and to pay off massive student loans, plus food, housing, medical stuff, etc.. out of what amounts to minimum wage.

Nobody goes into teaching expecting to get rich; they do it because they want to teach. Punishing them because the schools are falling apart and the textbooks are as old as they are is counter-productive. Actually funding the schools properly would let them do their jobs.

But no one ever ask teachers when they do “school reform.” It is nearly always imposed by people who’ve never taught based on ignorance and a deep refusal to look at the research.

* Since the Pandemic started, I put out bowls of candy. each bowl has a handful of things. Adults are welcome too, and I usually give out a lot of candy. This year one person stole the bowl itself, and no one else came. I think the three families with kids have moved out, since i haven't seen or heard them playing since summer. I've noticed that the other people that usually decorate in the complex didn't this year. It's sad.

I did get reverse trick or treated and Squirrel and I split the loot. Weirdly, it was not the bowl thief.

* October is always really hard on my body and particularly so in the back half. Halloween week takes everything I have really. Samhein is the most important holiday of my year and it takes everything.

Wednesday my body hard vetoed Wednesday errands. I called Head Millennial in time for them to get public transport and make evening arrangements. I could barely walk and had the pain shakes. One days like this, it's best to just take ones meds and go back to sleep and home a nap will reset things. This was correct. When I tried again later, I was a functional level of awful. We managed to take in the Halloween specific exterior stuff and box it all up. I'll need to tweek the "Harvest Display" and do a day time sweep to be sure we got everything before boxes go back into storage. Halloweentown is in chaos, but that's another day's problem.

Head Millennial went above and beyond today. I love how fundamentally kind and trustworthy they are. we had dinner together and watched a movie we'd started a week ago, geeking out together about the high quality lighting design and mourning the death of banter in modern romcoms as well as how few productions are willing to pay for really artistic lighting. (I sited Black Sails as proof the art isn't lost, even though we might think it was looking at the newest Halloween and Got/house of the dragon. Head Millennial is very grumpy about Halloween franchise in particular.)

It sounds like Visiting Millennial has decided to move up here, so at some point in the future they will be Newest Millennial. There is much rejoicing.

NOTE for newer readers: I like to use sobriquets to prevent people chain tracking through blogs. It was always my instinct and I got stricter after that reporter found me through the blog of a friend who wasn't as careful after Skye was murdered. It was fine. She was nice and professional and my friend changed the post in case of future accident. My point is that a determined swatter could find me, but I like to make them work for it if they want my friends.

* Thursday was the blue beast's mechanic appointment. They are always booked for weeks out this time of year. This meant very little sleep, but the coolant situation is sorted and I should be okay on the engine not melting for a while. *Knock wood*

Friday I just wanted sleep, but of they woke me up trying to strong arm me into a home health assessment. Thing is, it's an excellent service and an important one. My mother used them in her last year of life when her health was failing. They assess the person; they assess the needs; they help organize complex meds schedules; they hook people up with services. I support the program and said so to the lady, but I do not want one.

Why? She wanted to know. I do not need what they are offering and I don't like strangers in my home it's invasive. I don't need a dementia test. I have a home health aid. My meds schedule is, indeed, complex, but it's logical. (Think of it as a logic puzzle. Pills needing to be taken on an empty stomach need to go first thing in the morning. Ppills needing to be taken with food need to be at least an hour after empty stomach pills, and need to work with meal scheduling. Some pills can't be taken within two hours of each other, etc.. Some pills need to be taken multiple times a day. For a while I had a pill that needed to go four times a day, at least two hours after eating and an hour before eating. It was a nightmare, but I did it.) I do not want people tampering with the schedule, because every adjustment is a hassle and a half, and I have it down. The point is, it's my body deteriorating, not my mind, and I handle things just fine within my physical limits and I hate all the invasive monitoring that comes with living in this complex and that comes with being disabled. I minimize it where I can.

So I go to the bathroom, give Livia a come for pettins offer, reset my pillow prop system, and settle back in to try to sleep.

The phone rings. It's the system that pay for my caregiver. Mandatory home inspection. *deep sigh* I managed to wiggle out of this one so far because of the pandemic. It's so intrusive and I fucking hate that I don't get to have privacy because I'm disabled. I can't manage without Head Millennial, so I guess we're doing that Monday, plus the already scheduled social worker call Tuesday.

* Tuesday afternoon, I go in to have my sinus infection interrogated by a back up Doctor. I am always wary of back up Doctors, because my medical file is huge and complicated and there are inevitably concerns such as "Does this Doctor know anything about CF carrier?" (or my other long list of stuff, but the cf carrier is pertinent here.) It usually saves everyone time and energy if I wait a couple weeks for my Doctor to be free, but I figure the infection is already documented and it's a matter of this infection being antibiotic resistant, so I'm willing to gamble.

When I get home from that we crate up poor Livia baby and I take her back down town for her bladder appointment.

I wanted to thank everyone one more time. I have no words for how big a help you've all been in this crisis. I've never had a vet emergency before where there was enough money to jut do what the cat needs done and not have to worry about if I'd have enough for what she needs. I can just buy her food or take her to an appointment without panicking over every penny. Having a sick cat is terrifying, but the support you all have given us is a constant help and comfort.

* I'm ill again and needed to rest Thursday. I SHOULD have gone out for 9AM bureaucracy, but Livia had appropriated the bureaucracy bag, it was cold, and I was exhausted. I really did get as far as shows on, but she was napping and when I went to get it, she blinked at me all sleepy and trusting. I decided that this was the last straw and went to bed instead. Somehow i managed to injure a nipple in my sleep. how does anybody do that? It was so bad I had to take one of the good pain killers to get back to sleep.

I've not been able to pay one of the big bills this month, which means I'm going to be 120-140 down next month at a time when I'm running out of a bunch of stupid basic things like shampoo, litter, tp, the multi vitamins I'm ordered to take to counter nutrient leaching, etc.. I really need to do another round of auctions. I've selected sacrifices, but I don't want to handle oils while i'm contagious, so I've pushed that to hopefully next week. Sigh.

* So a little over a week ago, one of my meat space friends referred to me as "easy going," which is something that startled me. The thing is, in a lot of ways I am like the Hulk in that some part of me is always angry. I am furious that the men who murdered Tamir Rice are still walking free and their are zero plans ever to bring them to justice, for example, and for all the similar cases where there will be no attempt at bringing the criminals to justice because racism. I am constantly, endlessly furious that we are re litigating things like are NAZIsm and pedophilia good or bad, whether women are fully human and capable of making their own medical decisions, should people of colour and trans people have human rights. I am furious that there is still not safe water in Flint and Puerto Rico, that the lights will likely stay off in Puerto Rico for 8 months or more. I am furious about all the ways we've gone backward in the last year and the rob the poor to give to the rich tax bill that just passed. The list goes on and on. I am in so many ways a ball of rage and have been since I was eight.

But she's not wrong either, once I thought about it, because on the personal level, on the dealing with people level, I am still living by the noble lie I adopted when I started teaching, and I don't take much personally unless there is a good reason to. The decades I invested on working on my anger, on healing old wounds, on meditation, did win me something. They often tell survivors of abuse of any kind that they must forgive to get better, but I think this is simply not true. I don't have to forgive or forget the gaslighting. I have chosen to retain most of the survival skills I learned during my grim little war. Oh, I went through and carefully audited my defenses and responses and carefully weeded out the ones that were no longer useful to adult me, but I refused to throw the baby out with the bath water. My particular set of strategic and tactical skills, the particular ways in which I am stubborn in the face of existential threat, my way of triaging crises, a whole toolkit of people observational skills honed to tell actual threats from people just being thoughtless or self involved and from people who are worth being friends with, are all still damned useful. I refuse to root out a whole collection of survival mechanisms that are dormant most of the time, but useful as anything in certain rare, but occasional threat situations. I am proud of my survival. I am proud of the disciplined and occasionally ruthless way I have gone about protecting my core values, myself, and the people I care about. I am proud of having refused to forsake empathy, and of having kept my memories of just how grim shit can get for children and young teens and for having used that in my teaching to help the kids most in need of true kindness from an adult with authority over them. Every time some whiny sexist geek boy pretends that he gets a pass on being a bully himself as an adult on account of his past, I am furious, because that behavior is a choice and I think people who have been harmed have LESS of an excuse for a lack of empathy and decency than people who have no idea what it feels like to be systematically abused. At eight, I could distinguish between true malevolence, adults doing terrible harm because lying to themselves protected them from having to do better, adults who meant well but for one reason or another could not work out an effective course of action and instead were useless at best or extremely harmful for all their good intentions at worst, those who were powerless to intervene but would have liked to, and children who were doing terrible things to save themselves. I never forgave the first category, and have very little sympathy for the second. The others though? I understood and forgave. If I could manage that level of nuance at eight, how much more so at 48.

Like I said, like the hulk, some part of me is always angry, but I get to chose to use that anger for good or for ill. I can chose to direct it at people in power doing harm or on taking it out on innocent people around me. I invariably chose the former instead of the later. It's there when the anti-choice assholes are screaming at woman down at the Grocery Outlet and I go to stand with the women being screamed at. It's there when I right about the abuses the system inflicts. It is there to keep me fighting when the world is as horrible as it is in Trump's America. I do not have to forgive abusers; I just have to be decent where decency is called for.

The Wednesday forage line was a block long Wednesday, despite the snow that was falling, as people are always foraging at the end of the month. I had a lung full of cigarette smoke and couldn't stop talking because one dude towards the end of the line refused to step away far enough like the other smokers were doing. I was cold, I was in pain, I was standing on damaged joints and was going to be for a long time. I could not read or sit down because of the snow. The guy ahead of me started ranting about a women further up the line who was on her cell to a friend working out which of their group had the Costco card, transport, and where to meet up. I was not particularly eavesdropping as she was loud and I wasn't reading. The man was building up a rant about how if she was rich enough for a Costco card, why was she in the forage line and how that was like someone he once saw driving a BMW there. I said something like, "Someone could have bought the car before they lost their job. It could easily be several years old." I pointed out that last time I had the money for it, I bought a really good coat and getting rid of a warm sturdy coat wouldn't be worth the small amount of money I could get selling it. I pointed out that the lady, who was clearly sharing a car and a Costco card with at least two other adults from the bit of her conversation we'd heard, might have clubbed in with a bunch of friends to share a card. I can't afford to do that now, but I'd shared the membership fee with three or four other people at various times in the pat when I could afford to chip in for one and that ten or fifteen dollars is not that large an investment if you are in a position to make it. The man visibly calmed down. I could see him thinking about the woman and her shared Costco card from a different perspective. I could see him applying empathy where escalating anger and resentment had been. I'm glad I spoke up, because I feel like even though it is a drop of water against an ocean, anything we can do to make people see that it is possible to read the same set of facts from a kind perspective instead of a judgemental perspective is good. I used to do something similar when the native born students started getting paranoid about the Ukrainian kids.

The world is full of assholes, but I often come back to my noble lie, which was a Socratic truth. (In case you are curious, the Noble Lie in Plato's republic is "that all men are brothers.") My Noble Lie was that if you show people the Good they will chose it over the alternative and act accordingly. My experience in eight years of teaching was that approximately 1 out of ten people will do the right thing without prompting most of the time. If one goes around openly talking and acting as if the Noble Lie is the truth, another seven or eight out of ten depending on group composition will chose the Good for whatever reason (social pressure, wanting to impress a popular and well liked authority figure, not wanting to look like an asshole in front of their friends, etc.). I never forgot that the noble Lie was a Lie though, and that other 10-20%? I watched like a hawk.

So unless I have good reason to think otherwise (Paul Ryan is clearly intelligent enough to know how destructive and cruel his policies are and is choosing to do them any way for selfish reasons, justifying his cruelty and destructiveness through Atlas Shrugged Ayn Rand bullshit, for example, so no excuses and no forgiveness. He chooses to do terrible things to people and the world, on purpose, having a reasonably good idea of the consequences. He is not mistaken or mislead. He chose these things on purpose), I generally look for multiple constructions one could put on a person's actions based on available data. I act as if the innocent ones are more likely as long as the person is doing no obvious or deliberate harm. If there is harm or potential harm, I proceed as if the noble lie is true, because if you do explain or demonstrate the good, gently, kindly, calmly, a majority will chose the good in the end or at least proceed more gently and with more empathy. Nothing can be done about the rest, but people who are not sociopaths/psychopaths generally can be reached with the right approach. I save the direct opposition for real threats; I speak up where I need to, but I try to direct my anger at the people who deserve it and not direct it at someone who likely is doing nothing wrong or someone who just made a mistake. I had a whole lot of success explaining to middle schoolers why a particular sexist, homophobic, ableist, etc. comment was not okay but making the assumption in my soundbite length response that the thing was said out of ignorance. Sometimes it was; sometimes it wasn't. Pretending it was for all first offenses drew the boundary, but gave them a way out. Very few needed a second warning and only one in eight years needed a third and his friends made it clear they were on my side. There was never a forth offense in my hearing.

I suspect all those years of not taking Middle Schooler unpleasantness personally, (because it hardly ever was about me even when it was directed at me), and all those years practicing empathy and liking kids even when they couldn't like themselves does mean that in a sense I am easy going even though it doesn't feel that way on the inside sometimes. A thing to think about anyway.

* So yesterday, I had the delightfully textured black scarf. Seriously, I was handling it today and was startled by how soft and interesting it is to my hands). Today apparently a package came from my sister. (We found it after midnight). A complete Soap series DvD and a Mr. Roger's changing sweater mug, so a little odd, but useful. What I really desperately need is for the Alabama relatives to send me a check. Even ten dollars would solve the ebays fees mean I'm going to go negative on my bank account issue. Or if the late payer would actually pay me that would solve it. Sigh. There's been no card or letter from the Uncle that actually likes me yet and I sent him a Halloween card with letter earlier in the month. I hope he's all right. His health is always fragile and there is no guarantee word would reach here if he's had a bad turn. Apparently the Gothmas present opening starts on the 21st, not the twentieth. I'm tempted to start after midnight to make it a present a day starting with my Birthday.
