* Tuesday Squirrel lent me his car for whipped cream Scavenger hunt. Wednesday we skipped forage because of all the stuff needing doing on top of the usual stuff, for today was the grand pie making.. We got both vegan mincemeat and vegetarian shoofly made. I absolutely could not have managed without the Millenials as I can't physically mask the crumble part anymore. Head Millennial had never made crumble before, but he did a better job than i would have when my arms were working properly. There were also things like digging chairs out of the closet to take tomorrow. It was very all hands on deck but we got everything done, including all the usual stuff except forage. It feels like someone tried to yank one or possibly both arms out of the socket, and the particularly damaged section of my spine screams when I stand up, but it was worth it, I think.
This was the first time I had the Millennials do the bed without me as I was doing the molasses fill and starting the shoofly pies. (I usually pull out the clean pillow cases and move all the small stuff, but head Millennial's been doing it since April and Nearby Millennial has done it enough that I was ready to hand it over.) They put all the small stuff in the right places. I would come by and carry off the old linen to the laundry and could here head Millennial doing a fine job coordinating. He apologized because they weren't doing things in the same order. Thing is, i was doing it in that order because I was having to work around squirrel's availability and my disability originally. I kept doing it like that because we were working around my disability. Then I needed to be in there to train Nearby Millennial. The order didn't matter as lo ng as all the component parts were correct. Adjusting to make it faster for two healthy people made perfect sense to me.
So I'm grinning and like, "You're in charge! You're head Millennial! You know what you're doing!" he inquired if that came with a top hat and tails. Alas, it did not. I wandered off to put baking stuff away. They loved it, taking it exactly in the spirit it's meant. I am used to being in charge of people and things, but I've weirdly never been an actual boss in the sense I am now. I think about it a lot. They after all members of my found family first and there is an inherent weirdness in now being literally in charge of their livelihoods.
My philosophy here is that it should be mutually beneficial for everyone involved. the state sets their maximum hours, but they get to set their actual shifts. We adjust based on what works for everybody. They get breaks when they need breaks. They get to go home when they are done or tired whichever comes first. I give them priority tasks and stretch goals. They can add stuff they want to do as long as it's stuff that needs doing (Which it always is.) I give them choices where possible. (Sometimes there are several lower projects we can work on. I'll be like which of these do you want to do?) I respect their work and them as human beings. All the important stuff gets done, and there's always next time for the less priority stuff.
I think all work should be something like this. It should be to mutual benefit. Everyone involved should have their needs and personhood Respected. sure some jobs need strict schedule. A school needs a certified person in the classroom when the kids turn up for school, for example. A lot of jobs though? Not so much. For example, when I did workstudy in technical services at a big University library. They needed me to come in at least three times a week for one of the job bits sio it didn't clog the pipeline for other workers further down the line, but which days Mon-Sat and which times between 8-5 didn't really matter. The important thing was I worked all my designated Level one hours a week on three different days, and that I kept them separate from my better paid Level II hours on the time sheets and that work got done. An honest person doesn't need much supervision once they learn what they are doing, and people work harder and more efficiently if you let them manage their work flow just generally.
I care that I have clean dishes in cupboards I don't hurt my arm scrubbing, nor my joints bending to pull from the dishwasher. I need the bed changed and I need to be able to find things like the arm prop pillows or the book I'm reading after. I don't care if the pillowcases get changed before or after the big stuff. Pretty much safe with the sofa covers or the counter tops or the floors. I don't need to hassle people over it unless there's a new thing or a minor correction or the like. I know perfectly well that they are working. I can see the finished products and hear them moving about even if I'm not in the same room right then. I don't care if they are chattering happily away on the shift they work each week together, because the work is getting done and Head Millennial gives training where it's needed, and they both always ask if they aren't sure. Them having a good time while they work makes them happier and happy workers do a way better job then people who resent being there and are way more pleasant to be around.
I genuinely don't understand why this isn't standard. I know a lot of small businesses do work this way. Treating workers as easily replaceable cogs (This is me glaring hard at Jeff Bezos) is cruelty for the sake of cruelty. It's not better or more efficient. It's exploitation for the fun of exploitation. The jobs I've had that I actually liked all were fundamentally mutually beneficial. Most of the library jobs, teaching, garden/yard work, for example.
I think the pandemic has really woken people up to how many jobs aren't.
So I think about it a lot. Mutual benefit, respect, fairness, treating people decently. I'm not perfect. nobody is. If I mess up, I apologize and try to do better.
It is still weird, being somebody's boss for real complete with performance reviews to the person who is responsible for the actual paychecks and the like. I suspect it's always going to be weird, given how much of my life I spent as a worker and how many shitty bosses I've have over the years.
* Thursday was Friendsgiving. It went well, despite a small blackout, food getting finished in time drama, etc. but I pushed be body to far, so the pain kept waking me up and things are still unpleasant Friday night.
Head Millennial made a turkey for the first time. I am a vegetarian, so I didn't sample it, but it looked perfect and smelled right, and people seemed to really enjoy it.
