Once during a long move that involved driving up and down the I-5 corridor in the late ‘90′s, my partner at the time wanted me to pick a sampling of 20th century Classic Science Fiction, so he could better understand the history of the field. (He liked science Fiction and fantasy, but he grew up with the mass market paperbacks of the ‘70′s and ‘80′s, whereas I was exposed to a much broader range through my father.)

We did okay with folks like Bradbury and Silverberg (They have their issues, but still are readable), but he insisted we tackle Asimov. I tried to talk him out of it. I didn’t know about the rapes yet at this point, but his short fiction, non-fiction, and essays were way better than his long form fiction where stiff writing and a refusal to even attempt to characterize women as whole people really make it tough going, but Skye thought he should at least read Foundation because it got referenced a lot. It... did not go over well.

He asked for Heinlein next.

Me: Are you sure? I mean really, really sure?

He was sure. I picked this one on the grounds that there were things in there still referenced in the culture at the time, and really, they are pretty much all offensive in the same ways to one degree or another. (I remember as a tween wanting to hit the author after I read Podkayne of Mars ).

At least I had an amusing time watching Skye’s face as he took in how utterly fucked up and gross the whole thing was.

As bad as the summary makes it sound, the book is so much worse. For years after all one of us would have to say was “Erect Nipples,” in response to something sexist and poorly written, and the other would either crack up or nod knowingly depending on context.

* Friday: It was like today was a conspiracy to steal all the sleep.

Food box delivery has crept from just before bed to just when I reach REM cycle. Which I have to dress and retrieve from the porch and at least half unpack (perishables). I had just managed to drift off when Amazon called telling me I needed to open the door for a delivery. Our building intercom phones my land line, so this was reasonable. We can't buzz people in, so I needed to dress, mask up, go get the package, which I assumed Squirrel ordered. No lady. No package. I open the front door and call out in case they are waiting out of sight somewhere. No lady, no package, no truck. I go back in, and do a call back on a hunch. I get a generic check the amazon website message, not the buzzer. She called from a company phone, not the call box. Was she standing in front of the wrong building? IDK. Then it clicked. That was a Birmingham accent. I bet she was standing in front of my Aunt's door in Alabama waiting for her

So I finally managed to drift off to sleep again, and keep in mind, at best I would have had five hours of sleep today, when the phone rings. It's physio. Me, confused: I thought my appointment check in wasn't until 2:45? Her: Let me explain. It turns out some people cancelled and a bunch of slots were empty and they were hoping I might be willing to move my appointment earlier so the nice physio therapist could go home instead of sitting around with nothing to do for a few hours, only the receptionist was sort of hinting instead of asking right out. Me: a person who used to work for a living and knows the value of an afternoon off: I can't get there immediately, because lunch time traffic might be a little heavy. It'd be 15-30 minutes depending on commute speed. Her, wildly relieved I'd taken the hint and could accommodate: Wonderful

I fed and hung out with the cat's I'm house siting after, so I got that out of the way at least, plus some day gardening I needed to do and the non-perishable unpacking. The teenaged cat had only seen me twice at most before the pandemic, but was right there with Godrick who knows me fairly well, sniffing the fingers and cadging pettins.

I'm basically only up until I'm ready to try sleep again. Expect very little posting tonight.

* Saturday: I was good and did the new extremely painful physio things. I went over for the morning cat feeding and social time a bit later than intended, but still within spec. Yesterday, I forgot to check the mint bed for weeds. (Technically ground cover, but it's super aggressive and out competes things I grow on purpose. Now is a perfect time to hunt it as things are dying back for the winter.) Today, I remembered. I think their may be time for the last batch of tomatoes to ripen, but for most of them it's a race. Most of them are on one of the plants a friend sent from Oregon and they look delicious. At least two are old enough to window ripen if I have to. I have a lot of volunteers that grew too late. I am tempted to try to bring them in and grow them in the window, but it's going to be rough, this being Goth tchotchke season and that being the sitting window for the cats. It's getting chilly at night, so I'll need to decide soon.

I am weepy from the pain, but can't take anything for it as I need to go over for second feeding. Sigh.

* Sunday: Okay, this is a non-viable level of pain. I was going to try to remember to call the physio place Monday anyway. Basically, I use up all the arm specific spoons on the arm doing physio and there's nothing left for things like fixing the sofa covers, basic house hold tasks, dealing with pain, etc.. Oh god, this is nightmarish and I can't take anything until after evening cat sit visit.

* ToS: Season 2 Rewatch:

- 2.21: Patterns of Force. This is the same basic premise as the annoying gangster one, only, you know, NAZIs. Sigh.

They go looking for a missing historian on a less advanced planet. The planet has much better technology than expected, including nuclear weapons. They have transponders implanted and Kirk and Spock beam down to discover literal NAZis persecuting members of the local other culture. They are dong large scale genocide in the name of the fuhrer, who is the missing historian. Sigh. Kirk and Spock dress up as NAZIs to infiltrate. As Spock predicted Kirk makes a convincing NAZI; Spock is caught right away, exposing them both. Homoerotic whipping follows.

Another prisoner questions their capture as they aren't Zeons. He explains scapegoating to the audience at home. They had come to "civilize" the locals, being from a more civilized peaceful race. The NAZI thing is new, and coincides with the historian arriving here. The Zeon says they will come and conquer the Zeon home world once they finish the genocide here.

Kirk and Spock cut out their transponders and use them to laser open the door of the cell. Kirk screams for help, and Spock neck pinches the NAZI guard. They let the Zeon out and go look for their equipment. Kirk pickpockets a guard for keys. The communicators have been taken apart. They steal the uniform from the guy they pickpocketted and try to leave the city.

The Zeon takes them to his resistance cell, who are sensibly suspicious. The Zeon Prisoner's fiance has been murdered. "If we adopt the ways of the NAZIs, we're as bad as the NAZIs." Spock fixes a communicator. A woman NAZI they saw decorated earlier, catches the cell; they overpower her. It turns out it was a test and the woman is secretly working with the resistance. Kirk explains that he's come for John Gill, who is an alien too. They insist he was supposed to observe, not interfere. She's going to sneak them in.

They pretend to be the media. Something's wrong with the historian, so they summon McCoy. The NAZIs search for the secret transmitter and they pretend McCoy is drunk. The speech is random sentences. They knock out the guards. The historian is drugged; McCoy treats him, but it doesn't really work. They are going to invade the Zeon home world. Spock mind melds with the Fuehrer and they discover the second in command is really in charge and has been for a couple years. Kirk is understandably WTF!?! Why did you do this at all? He says he was trying to help them. I think it's gross that they had Nimoy, a Jewish actor, take the efficiency side of the argument. Eeew.

The Fuehrer keels over, and can't have more meds. They get caught, but pretend they caught Spock, a spy. They take him too their leader. Kirk doses the Fuhrer. The real leader describes Spock in antisemitic ways. The Fuehrer denounces the attack and his puppet master, ordering all the units to return. The Second shoots the Fuhrer; the guards arrest the second. The NAZIs reform. Kirk denounces the "leader principle." Spock and McCoy bicker. It is weirdly jocular and all this is fixed now. I don't think you can undo fascism so cleanly and quickly.

It's more nuanced than the gangster one, but also... very ill advised on a bunch of levels. I wish they never did it, but here we are.

* TNG: Season 7 Rewatch:

- 7.23 Emergence. Picard is helping data with data's acting of the Tempest on the holodeck. I have... historical concerns with Picard's interpretation, but that's beside the point. A train comes and they can't turn it off. It wandered in from Dr. Crusher's program about the Orient Express program. They turned off the holodeck and are looking into the glitch.

The Enterprise goes into warp without a command. The computer has locked them out of the controls. They are gong to shut down the engine, but they cut out on their own. It turns out this saved them from a "data flux distortion" that would have exploded the ship.

They are inexplicably struggling to connect these two events. Data and Geordi find new connections growing like neurons connecting ships systems. The nodes can protect themselves. The more their are the harder to control the ship. The holodeck that malfunctioned is the focal point.

They go into the holodeck, which is running a bunch of programs at the same time. I feel like the crew is slower than zombies playing monopoly as they still haven't worked it out. They go to open the hatch they need to depolarize the nodes and the conductor challenges them to produce tickets. Riker pretends theirs are in their compartment. The Engineer defends them. A gangster shoots the engineer and the ship is back in warp. The controls are burnt out. The safeties are disengaged because of course they are, so they leave.

The nodes keep spreading. Data finally works out that the Enterprise is growing a brain. Consciousness is more than the um of it's parts. Basically an artificial intelligence is emerging. The holodeck functions as imagination. Picard orders them not to harm the nodes. Deanna tries to analyze it. The gangster need the brick to get to "Keystone city." There are lots of little clues involving things being constructed. Data tries to get control back; Deanna follows the Gangster, who is "laying the foundation." The cargo bay is now depressurized. Data gets ready to depolarize the power grid. The ship is building something in the cargo bay. Depolarizing the node nearly destroys the ship, so they stop doing that. slower than zombies playing monopoly.

They compare notes. Deanna works out that the major characters constitute aspects of the personality/ship's systems. Picard: Maybe we should cooperate with it. Me: Ya think? They bring tickets this time. The engine is running out of steam. Worf goes to help in the engine room. Deanna reassures people and asks them about the place they are going. Worf feeds the engine. The ship uses a modified tractor beam to harvest particles it needs from a dwarf star. Picard puts it together. Zombies. Monopoly. The object in the cargo bay is failing because not enough particles. Train derailment; ship wide shutdown. It was trying to make an artificial life form in the cargo bay, but it will die if they don't find more particles.

The crew have less than two hours of oxygen with all power to propulsion. They are trying to divert the ship to a closer source. Deanna and Data try to convince them to let Data help them. It works. The new lifeform leaves; the nodes deactivate. Data invite Picard to the "Brave New World" scene from the Tempest and asks about the gamble of letting the intelligence form. Picard says he trusted the thing because it was made from the crew's experiences.

I liked this a lot better when it was new, I think.

I am also strongly suspecting they are queer baiting us with Troy and nick. I don't like either of them and I have no prurient interest in this ship, but that doesn't make it okay giving the shitty quality of Queer Representation in this franchise (both shows) and the shortage of bisexual male characters in general. Don't toy with me unless you plan to deliver. It's the 21st fucking Century, teasing isn't enough. Do or don't do.

* The Book of the Unnamed Midwife was brilliant! It was a really compelling story, and it was really good to see a post-apocolyptic setting where all the queer folk didn't mysteriously die so quick they were never mentioned. We get a bisexual protagonist, plenty of queer folk here and there, multiple poly relationships, and a strong feminist structural design. I do need to warn people that there is rape and a little pedophilia off screen, though not described in a prurient way, and it is made very clear that rapists are terrible people and decent people fight them.

* Doctor Who Rewatch (3rd Doctor): The Spearhead from Space episodes speak well of the NHS, I think. They found an unconscious, possibly indigent man in the woods and look at the quality of care they attempt to give him. no way would he be treated as well over here to our National shame. I had... not realize just how much of third Doctor we get to see in his second episode. Was that his body or did they use a body double for the shower scene, I wonder? I kind of love that it takes no modifications at all to make the ordinary process of industrial doll making look appropriately creepy.

* Look, I know nothing about the Inhumans except for the new show. I was DC growing up. I literally didn't know Inhumans was a thing until they started promos. I am not trolling here, and I'd love for someone familiar to the franchise to explain if the fleeing Royals are meant to be the good guys. The show is framing things as if we are meant to the heroes, but they are tyrant who have enslaved a large portion of the population in the mines. Their justification for this horrific (in)human rights abuse is that they have limited resources on the moon and therefore they can't afford not enslaving people, which is clearly a lie, as enslaved people on the moon are still taking up resources like food, water, and oxygen. It's a transparant attempt to justify the unjustifiable. If they were really resource poor and wanting to avoid contact between people with powers and Earth humans without, wouldn't it make sense to set up a colony on earth? I've seen abandoned towns for sale now and then here in the US. Private Islands are still a thing, and there are also options like a flottilla in international waters. The Amazon jungle still exists and they have stealth technology sufficient to make a secret domed settlement. They could use this as a way to culturally acclimate before gradually making themselves known if they want to do that later. So why don't they do that instead of slavery? Slavery is never the fuck okay and this is clearly a choice on the part of the royal family as part of a eugenicist genocide. Fuck that! Seriously.

I'm not saying what's his face the usurper is the good guy either what with the murder, attempted murder, etc.. It's just that so far, the only decent people we've seen are the people of Hawaii (which I do approve of).

Is everyone except Native Hawaiians evil in the comics, or did the show runners do that without noticing that they are glorifying slavery?

He's said a ton of racist things including in the last year. He sided with violent literal NAZIs and literal KKK members and a terrorist against peaceful anti-racist protesters they attacked. This is who he is. We both know you are lying when you say this isn't the real Trump and he's totally going to change and suddenly stop being a racist. He's made clear who is. He's a 77 year old man who was raised to be racist and in 71 years hasn't made any effort to break with that. If you are allied with him, you are allied with an avowed and adjudicated racist who uses racist rhetoric, pushes racist policies, and who thinks NAZIs are the good guys. If you are standing with him, this is who you are too, and lying that he's going to magically have a change of heart is not going to change which side you are standing on here and how history will judge you.

* Is anyone else surprised there was no spontaneous human combustion at the National Cathedral Saturday morning?

* There's a bunch of this bullshit going around, peddled by usually white, usually affluent gay and/or lesbian people trying to push everyone else out of the movement and community spaces. Fuck that! I don't happen to have an it effects me stake in Ace and bi rights, but fuck if I'm abandoning the ace and/or bi community for some bullshit mainstreaming the LG have been pushing since round about the start of the '90's. I do not want to be mainstreamed. I am not giving up my right to be different, and no fucking way am I leaving anyone behind.

And I also think it's rude to tell an older generation they have to give up their words. I choose not to use them, but most of those surviving 60+ trans women went through some shit and if they want to keep their words, I say leave them to it, just like my generation is not giving up our words people literally died for. Context changes, I get that but this is all of our history too. It's up to use to choose what we want to call ourselves whether it be our name or the labels or phrases we use to describe ourselves. I think we'd all be a lot better off listening to each other up and down the age gaps and across labels than we are policing each other and kicking people out because their experiences are different than ours. (As an Xer, I've spent a lot of time explaining Millenial experience to Boomers and Boomer experience to Millennials, because the generation gap is so big there people are often not speaking the same language and have no idea how to grasp an experience so different from their own.) We need to listen to each other. I absolutely get why some people object to reclaiming certain words, and I respect people's right not to be called by them. At the same time? While I get why some people don't want to reclaim queer, it's a useful word and an inclusive word, we've been using it most of the time I've been alive as a rallying cry, and it's my word. It's somehow nearly always terf/biphobic/acephobic folks wanting to ban the use of "queer" as if "gay," for example weren't a reclaimed slur too.

We need to have each other's backs.

We need to stand together.

Now is not the time for those in our community with the most privilege to be kicking people out.

Our movement needs to be inter-sectional. Our movement needs to realize that people experience oppression differently across race and gender lines. Our movement needs to be diverse and inclusive. Our movement needs to have everyone's back, not just within our movement, but uniting with other groups our members belong to, because we are everybody. We are of all races. Some of us have disabilities. Some of us are undocumented. Some of us are members of unpopular with Republicans religions or no religion at all.

There is strength in numbers. Now is the time to unite, not divide.

If you want to kick people out for bring bi or ace or trans or working class or a different skin colour or religion or whatever, maybe you need to think about what is wrong with you instead of trying to piss on the rest of us.

* My credit card payment went through and so I headed out, coupon in hand to do some adulting. I save up hardware store run things until I have at the same time 1. A coupon. 2. 20-25 dollars worth of things needed for home and garden. I needed sluggo, fly strips, and good glue, and the coupon ends tomorrow, so out I went. I had to buy a small thing at check out extra to hit the minimum, so I tossed in a candy on top. As he was bagging them up I realized I had just "bought poison and candy!" The man said, "You are far from the first." so I am set with the basics for when the weather warms, which in my region is likely soonish. The bulbs are already quite leafy. I do need to do some cleaning and prep out there, but not today. Today I messed about with fish filters and changed out the fly strips. I need to do gluing, but also not today.

* I was describing Swan Lake to someone the other day. In the plot summary, I said something like, "And being a lunkhead, he doesn't notice the black swan is not his girlfriend, whom he supposedly loves." Today I was watching some Coppelia, and thinking, "Being a lunkhead, he decides to cheat on his lively and intelligent girlfriend with a manikin he saw in a window.... Are all ballet boyfriends idiots?”

* I finally got to see season three of Penny Dreadful. I have all sorts of problems with the North American section of the plot, none of which were the fault of the excellent actors, and I really didn't like much of anything about how the Vanessa plot ended, except for Dr. Seward and the glorious Cat. On paper one might think Vanessa's stuff would be triggering, but none of it was. I really enjoyed her acting and that of Mr. Claire and that episode with mostly just the two of them was well done, but I hated the end of the big arc plot so much it is hard to get past that.

For me, the best thing in the season was Lily's plot. for all the ways this show has been problematic, particularly around race and LGBT things, they did get this particular passage about rape culture and patriarchy pretty much right. How often have I had men try to tame me or edit out or cut out bits of me they didn't like or found inexplicable? So many men do that: try to turn the person they think they want into some version of them that has nothing to do with who they actually are? Victor Frankenstein's sense of entitlement to Lily, is belief that he owns her and his declaring her having agency, past, and desires that have nothing to do with him is so very male and very relevant and part of a long ugly history of straight white men medicalizing protest. It was a beautiful example of depiction without endorsement. Lily's resistance, her insistence that her scars are part of who she is... How often have I said and written that I wouldn't go back in time and change anything about my childhood, as horrible as it was, because I like myself and to do that would be suicide, since I literally have no clue who I'd me now, but for sure that person would be nothing like this one. Vanessa's resistance in the Banning clinic (the strongest part of her season three arc), and Lily's resistance in Bedlam, these moved me and are things so familiar I have no words for it really. So for all my anger at season two, and my disgust at how the season three A plot turned out, I loved season three because pieces of it were true and powerful and all to real.

* I was watching a Bolshoi Corsair with Masha Alexandrova and Nikolai Tsiskaridze. She is exquisite, but he was a disappointment. I kept trying to put my finger on what was wrong. He is sloppy and a tad selfish. I can spot mistakes, I can see him waiting his turn when he should be supporting her. It's not that he's awful, but he's just not in her league at all. Finally, I put my finger on it: She dances like she loves dancing; he dances like he loves people watching him dance.

* Squirrel broke the second of the chairs he borrowed from me as a temporary fix to the his computer chair broke problem, so I drove him to Value Village to find a cheap replacement for seven bucks instead of him continuing to destroy my guest chairs. Still no baby slings, but I found an arm sling for two dollars. It is less secure, but an improvement. Tavy's a cat sized cat and too heavy to hold against my chest for an hour long cat nap. He is right now in it as I type. The arm sling has the advantage of a big tail hole, but I think I'll keep looking, as I'd like the security of a baby sling for when he wants naps. He sat in it for about fifteen minutes while I scritched him earlier. I think he'd prefer my arm to the sling, but it does mean I can scritch him with what had been the support arm and I'm not quickly exhausted and in pain, and I can mouse when he's in full lounge mode, even though typing only works when he's in alert shoulder mode. My theory is his balance disorder makes it hard for him to feel secure and being held like that grounds him the way leaning against a wall or a friend does for a very drunk person, and he gets pettins and cuddles and a nice view from high up, which he likes. So the sling looks to be worth the two dollars, and is a good stop gap for training him to get used to being held in a sling.

* So there's this whole set of films where there's an angry ghost murdering little kids in a rural town. (Ex: Lady in Black, Darkness falls). I get why the Lady in black folks don't leave: it's economic. Except for the Nobleman, who's a skeptic, they can't afford to leave their homes and businesses. No one is going to buy a pub or a haulage business in a literally dying village. Starting over from the bottom with no job or assets is hard. How much harder for middle aged and older folk? And the curse is fairly recent, so they are still trying to find precautions against it. It's a whole other thing with like, a hundred year old haunting/curse that is verifiable and deadly. Once it's clear that children are going to keep dying in numbers, any one who can afford to leave would. Those who couldn't would do the best they could to protect their children, but logically, when the surviving young people grew up they'd MOVE THE FUCK AWAY. That's what young people tend to do any way from small towns with limited prospects, and having grown up with so many dead class mates, they would be even more motivated to get the hell away the moment they were old enough to get a job, any job somewhere else if they couldn't afford college. You wouldn't want to start a family in a town where, say, one on four kids is murdered by a ghost in early puberty. Adults with families often have jobs, houses, businesses they can't afford to leave. Eighteen year olds though? So the generation after the curse starts will mostly go. Odds are there will stragglers who can't afford a bus ticket out, or who have sick parents or younger siblings they can't leave, or are ill in a way that makes leaving hard, but the odds are the numbers of people between eighteen and the increasingly higher age where people were too settled to go will stretch. The second post curse generation will likely be tiny, late in life babies for the aging population, and a handful of stragglers. The school district shrinks to the point they need to bus the handful left to the next town over. The dying off continues amoung that group, because children are not good at being careful and obedient one hundred percent of the time because, you know, kids. By the time the hand full of survivors are grown, it's a town of old people, being maintained by the remaining adult survivors of the first cursed generation. It's not sustainable. What are the odds of the handful of gen 2 kids staying to make a gen three? A hundred years later you have a creepy ass ghost town, not a thriving one that has adapted to the super high death rate of children. To be clear, first generation stories like Lady in black do make sense. So do ones where it's like 5 deaths every twenty years or more. That's enough time for skepticism and a belief that if it happens it'll be someone else again, and the numbers are large enough to be tragic, but not enough to ravage the town demographically. You look at something like Darkness Falls or Lesbian Vampire Killers though, and I just don't see how the town is still there. Darkness falls is clearly the above ghost town scenario in three generations. Lesbian Vampire Killers should be even faster as all of the women are cursed, so to reproduce you'd have to out breed every time, and who the fuck marries into a town where all the girl children turn? No way is a town cursed centuries ago like that still there. I had large, prosperous that weathered the Great Pestilence of 1348-50 just fine, that were completely gone, or in one case down to four inhabitants by the Victoria survey and that is without Vampires, ghosts, or curses slaughtering their children.

I think it's down to my corollary to Asimov's theory that you can only get away with one or two big suspensions of disbelief per story (It is the far future and space colonies are a thing. Vampires, zombies, etc. exist). My corollary is that it's easier to swallow one big thing that shifts the whole world than something small but part of your everyday experience of how people or biology or everyday life works. (Ex: Fear the walking dead: Big thing: The dead rise and attack and eat the living. Small things: 1. A serious narcotic addict who's been mainlining hospital grade morphine experiences no withdraw. 2. A big fucking boat like that doesn't ever need to refuel.) The big thing in movies like that is the ghost/curse/monster/whatever. The small thing is that people would still be living there a century or more later, because in real life they wouldn't.

* So here is the thing. A Republican President will be disastrous. Look at their policies, which are actually worse than those of the last three Republican presidents, who together managed to destroy our economy, were disastrous foreign policy wise, and have nearly destroyed the middle class, the social safety net, the environment, etc.. Look at the damage these policies have done in the states: the roll back of voting rights and human rights. All the people who will die because of their fight against health care and their pro-cancer agenda.

As a result, as disgusted as I am with the weak spines and center right policies of most Democratic politicians, in the end, I will vote for whoever they put up, just as I did for gore when Nader's policies better represented me. I will do it even though I have a long running fury at the Clintons (for policy reasons to long to list here), though to be fair, she was always further left than him and at the time I would have much rather she were president than her husband. I will vote for that asshole O'Malley if the unlikely happens (please don't let the unlikely happen). I think Biden would not be a good president, but nowhere near as bad as anyone the Republicans are running. (Again, this is mostly long and complicated political memory stuff and not worth the time unless he's in and actually looks to be winning). Though I was against him being Vice President, he turned out to be shockingly good at it. Way beyond best guess at it. If he were elected, I'd love to be surprised the same way, but I don't think I will be, so lets home it doesn't come to that. Frankly, of this batch, Hilary Clinton is my best bet, and I am a lot happier being asked to vote for her than the others. She was solidly pro-civil rights once she moved out of her parent's house, and a strong feminist. (We all make compromises to keep the peace with our parents in high school. I myself was required to join the young Republicans against my will as my father ran the club at my school. I was also forced to do election cold calls, as my Father was starting his political career at that point, though he had not yet run for office. For the record, he was a local level anti-corruption reformer, not a creepy modern day big government Republican. At the time of his death, he was horrified at what his party had become, and would be spinning in his urn to see what they are up to these days as far as dismantling Civil and Women's Rights. We had screaming fights at the dinner table over AIDS policy, but I really am proud of what he achieved before the cancer took him. It was all important quality of life stuff, nailing corrupt officials, enforcing zoning laws for the safety of those living and working in the buildings sort of thing. I picked my battles and AIDS/gay rights I was willing to overturn family peace for, but I wasn't willing to fight him on party affiliation and only switched to independent when I was out of the house for my Mother's sake, because she had to live with the mess my battles with my father over politics and my sexual agency tended to stir up. I want to be clear, my father was not a monster and was polite to the boys I brought home in high school. He just was a man of his time and place. He knew intellectually that his prejudices were irrational and he voted and stood for equality under the law. he struggled to undo his early programming his whole life because he knew it was wrong. He just really had a hard time with his eldest having a sex life at all, let alone one that pushed so many of his monkey brain working class greaser 1950's Jersey Boy buttons). Anyway, I picked that most personal of battles and didn't fight him on things like economic policy, and I am not cool with people attacking others for things they did politically in High School that did not do harm. Attacks on Ms. Clinton based on shit she did when she was 17, like the super nasty sexist attacks she endured in the '90's, make me more sympathetic, not less.

Still, I'm going to drag my carcass out to caucus for Bernie Sanders when the time comes. I do not expect him to win, though I'd love to be surprised. After all, I have voted for Kucinich in Primaries and Bradley and Tsongas. I've always voted strategically. I never expect to have a President who actually represents me (though President Obama has come much closer than I ever expected when I caucused for him). I vote for the best of the available options in the hopes that it will drag the agenda and eventually policy the way it needs to go. I do think Mr. Sanders is the best available option just now. He's got a strong civil rights record, economic policies that are for everyone's good and not the 1%, and he fights hard, so hard for what's right. Is he perfect? No. Will he win? Absent a miracle, no. But I'm okay with that. I will turn up in the general election and dance with the one what brung me, but for now, it's Bernie all the way, because I wish we could have the future he wants for us instead of the one we will likely get.

Note: She also thinks it would be a good idea to force everyone not born to the 1% to work aprox: 48 hours a week at manual labour jobs plus presumably a second job to pay for food and housing while going to college. I am confused as to when she thinks they will have time to go to class let along do all the homework.

Obviously this is secondary to her massive endorsement of rape culture, but I thought we should to a moment to think about how incredibly classist and out of touch Republican thinkers are these days as well as being generally pro-rape, anti-education, and against women having any chance f economic success or personal fulfillment.
