You know the terribly landlords I've had? I've rented from both of these. Landmark is the one that:

1. Tried to double cash my rent check, then charge me late and return fees because i didn't have enough money in my account to pay a second rent I didn't actually owe them on the grounds that "Once you give us a check there is no law stopping us from cashing it as often as we want. Luckily my bank was willing to fight them tooth and nail and in the end they had to pay my bank fees also. (Seriously I still do not understand how this is legal.)

2. Fought us over every repair then took our deposit because we had not paid an outside contractor to fix things like plumbing.

3. Never changed carpets on any units between tenets. They were nasty, torn, stained, and moldy. We noted this on move in sheets. They charged us to replace the carpets when we left, then didn't change them so they could pull the scam on the next tenets, which i discovered when i went to get a mis-delivered package from the second rental we had from them.

4. Black mold constantly bloomed on the walls, carpeting and ceiling.

5. The stairs were rotting wood and shaky. One day the railing came off in my hand. They reluctantly replaced it with naked, uncured wood. No weather coating or paint or shellac, just pine bits they bought at some hardware store. the same happened when my leg went through a rotted stair board.

6. a neighbor kid fell on some of the rusted rebar they had sticking up randomly in the front yard. A slightly different fall would have pierced something vital. They not only refused to pay medical bills, they refused to remove the rebar. Every time I tottered down the railing-less cement stairs where the kid fell I would look at the foot high rebar spike and wonder if my eye or neck or heart would be next.

7. The floor was spongy in the entry way when we moved in, something we expressed concern about and noted on the move in form. They said it was normal and nothing was wrong with it. The ceiling in the front wall leaked at that same second and last rental. We reported it and the electrical danger it was posing as the stair light out front was wired through it and it was a lot of water. This was because they improperly installed the balcony above, compromising the wall and ceiling. They insisted this was our responsibility to pay to fix even though it was preexisting and clearly nothing to do with us. They refused to fix it and threatened to charge us for it if we didn't fix the balcony in the upstairs unit, wall, leaks, and wiring for them. (I have no idea how this is legal, but here we are. We knew we weren't getting a penny of deposit back anyway.)

Remember the spongy floor? Right under the water rivulets coming through the ceiling. One day squirrel's leg went through. He could have died as it would have been an entire story drop onto the foundation if both legs went through. They refused responsibility for medical bills and tried to get us to pay to fix it, which we refused. The workmen came and were horrified. The reason the floor was spongy was there was no wood under it. I was impressed unsupported linoleum lasted the three or so years before it gave way. They said the entire underside of the building was rotting away similarly.

It took most of the week for them to replace the massive section of floor they had to remove, since they had to put in make shift pillars and such underneath and shore up the rotting floor, using our two man sized hole. we were terrified a cat would jump in there and get trapped. I couldn't get safely over the hole so I was trapped in the black mold riddled house with my failing lung patient lungs. Squirrel had to work, so he kept having to step carefully over it over and over. I am still amazed he survived.

Eventually, they put naked plywood over the hole and we never saw them again. We could lift the plywood plank with our fingers it not being nailed down. It would stake as I walked over it. They tried to charge us thousands of dollars to replace it even though we pointed out none of this was in anyway our fault. Odds are it's still dragging my credit store down.

8. They did replace the balcony eventually and plug the holes, but they never touched the wall with the wiring that was sodden through every time it rained until they did. I never trusted that light switch, so we simply had no porch light. Want to bet it is all black mold inside?

Families are still living there.

All of this is completely legal as there is no authority anywhere that stops it.

* Sunday, I made the mistake of absentmindedly lifting some things after the head Millennial went home. I realized what I was doing fairly early and started icing right away. I likely would have been okay if Tavy hadn't kept insisting he was allowed to sleep with his whole weight on my wound. I kept trying to discourage this and redirect him to less damaging positions. He kept pretending to comply and then creeping back onto the non-load bearing area of my body the moment I'd drift off. I'd catch him mid-creep and redirect him back to safe, bonier areas like my ribs.

Eventually, he "won." He landed with his whole weight on one paw directly to my wound. I woke up just early enough to anticipate the pain, but not prevent it. I yelled because it really fucking hurt, terrifying him, so it was a pyrrhic victory for the Emperor.

I iced it, but it was bad. I just managed to stay out of the ER and I'm a bit better, but still a mess.

* We are planning to use most of squirrel's tax rebate to get a working oven, but the dishwasher is also broken. (The dishwasher is a safety thing because I am medically fragile. Not having a working oven is playing havoc with my nutrition.) My share of the oven plus fixing the dishwasher will likely be in the $600-700 range.

* I am having massive difficulties with my body. If you are an aggregate reader, it's likely obvious that something had gone badly wrong hear at the Cat Asylum. I am exhausted. The pain isn't really letting me sleep properly and doing everything is insanely hard. I keep having to stop and lie down.

I have surprise doctor appointment Tuesday. My suspicion is there was a cancellation or someone got moved over to a lung clinic appointment. In any case, it's mid sleep cycle. Fun!!!

* Tuesday I did make it out to the Doctor, despite the Emperor's objections. The Vaccination portable was eerily empty as I went through screening. I saw way more health care workers than patients on the property generally, all of which is super weird for Poverty Clinic.

My blood work is good. We are in agreement on what's going on with my lungs. We are changing up some of my meds including adding some temporary measures, one of which is "challenging" because I need to do it for times a day on a complicated schedule to avoid some of my meds it interferes with and food. I'm also going to have to risk a trip to an orthopedist because of the alarming shoulder deterioration in the last few months. I'm right handed. I really need my right arm to function and at this rate... Yeah.

My belief that I am near the top of the 1B schedule at the clinic is correct. The reason I haven't heard yet is they got one fifth of the doses they were meant to get and no doses at all this week. O.o Basically, they sent so few to my county that they are only doing 1A second doses this week here. Luckily, Squirrel was one of those second shots. I've been legitimately worried about him all year since as bad as my chances are his are a lot worse.

Anyway, if they actually start sending vaccine again, I'm betting I'll be next week or week after. If not... who knows.

I came home to find I'd lost parking, but luckily the guy we share with was at work. He's able bodied and only needs it sporadically; I've very much not and protecting the shoulder means opposite hip is really bad. I still feel like the asshole here. There was also a box of Special Girl Food and a bunch of bureaucracy. I did the phone bureaucracy right off, and luckily got under the wire in reaching an office to get stuff sent on an extremely time constricted thing before the offices in question closed. I need to check later in the week to make sure everything is sorted now. Two other things are also sorted. I have another thing I'm going to have to go through the pile for next weeks phone interview for to see if I really have a spare original of the thing another bit of bureaucracy that came in today needs. I think I do, but I was too tired to deal with it.

* I am so proud of Tavy. He generally does a good job of working around his disability. He has gotten really clever about figuring out how to sleep without falling using clever positioning, for example, but one of the big problems was how disruptive my occasional need to roll over when we are sleeping has been. hector was a mater at nimbly dancing, light of foot over my body as I rolled like a lumberjack on a spinning log and falling right back to sleep. For Tavy this is a massive disruption. I must wake him and gently encourage him to climb off and then there is the laborious picking his way back on with permanently uncertain footing, poor wee Pudding, then extensive needing of the spot he wishes he had balance to sleep on and the selecting of a properly secure actual napping spot. Today, for the first time, he managed to stay on top, clumsily as was inevitable, but he managed to execute the roll and go right back to sleep, the clever wee beastie. He doesn't like treats, so I've not taught him the tricks he's clearly clever enough to have learned other wise, but he has learned that the "uff uff" sound means to get off the human and that "squish" means to make way and the like. he is still more violent than I enjoy, but he is growing up into a fine cat regardless.

* Tonight I learned that it is risky, but possible to toast mini marshmallows over a candle if the candle burns hot enough, one pays enough attention, and one has really tiny skewers.

Note: The line between toasted and burnt is super thin and it is pretty easy for fire to get out of control. I'm not saying a it's a good idea, only that it's possible.

* Sigh. So not only did I spend the last week and a half blocking NAZIs, Anti-Choice people, etc. over an anti-hate crime article I linked ages ago on tumblr, but a thing I said about health care... Friday I think? Has gone low key viral, and is starting to attract 45's groupies to cuss at people reading me. Charming.

* My fundamental frustration with the Anthony Perkins Cavott interviews is that it is 1980 and he absolutely can't ask the questions I desperately want answers to. I want to know about his relationship with Nurayev, what it was like for him living in the closet so long, what he thought about the Plague that would take his life. I want to here about all the complexity of his life, but it's 1980, so it's all about Psycho and Equus. The Equus material was interesting to be but.... I had such complicated feelings about his life and career as a teen, feelings too big for a half hour interview in any case.

* I know, I know. I shouldn't be spending money on things that are not cat food, but Sunday is my birthday and my present for myself this year was one matinee ticket to see Crimson Peak today. Afterwards, I voted. Yes it's an off year election, but local elections are important. This year the ballot was massive, with not only the usual slate of local and county officials, but a large collection of measures to do with taxation, redistricting, and rules for what the city council can and can't do. I know this sort of thing is technical and unromantic, but look at what gerrymandering has done to the Congress and tell me again having fairly drawn voting districts isn't important. Things like clean water and mental health diversion instead of warehousing the mentally ill in prison are incredibly important issues. Again, not glamorous, but I want my city to stay on the right track. I keep a close eye on school boards because that's one of the places people who want to gut history and science education tend to try to get in to destroy local schools. I live somewhere pretty safe that way, but I still like to keep an eye open. (My candidate made it into the run off!)

Seriously folks, pay attention to local elections to things like Sheriff, city council, school board, and port authority. They have a huge impact on your local quality of life. It's a really good idea to keep a look out for targeted right wing tax measures designed to strip funding for schools and/or infrastructure or to constitutionally tie the hands of the legislature to fund key parts of government. I don't know what issues are going on where you live, but please check out your voter guide and research measures and candidates online.

Also, if you live somewhere with early voting, I urge you to take advantage of it. This is especially important if you live under Republican rule as their aggressive war on the right to vote continues. It is better to vote early so you have plenty of time to fight to get your rights reinstated if you've been unconstitutionally stripped of your right for being trans or poor or a person of color.

I suspect there is going to be a massive gulf between people who pay attention to the spoken text only and those reading the visual language as well, likely even worse than with Pacific Rim, because it's a similar issue: very simple plot with this massive amout of meaning layered into the visual language.

* I honestly can't tell you if Scream Queens is any good or not, despite all my watching of it. It is very pretty and I am amused by the music cues, but the Slasher genre isn't my genre and I really, really never liked the Sorority/Fraternity system and I would like it to go away forever, which makes it hard for me to connect with. I like Zayday? I like the aesthetics? I think beyond my disconnection from the subject matter, it is too exaggerated even for me and my fondness for stylized film and parody. I just can't suspend disbelief and am always being pulled out of it as a result. It likely does not help that this is the third Ryan Murphy thing I've seen Emma Roberts play this character in and I didn't particularly like this character the other two times either. It's just boring to watch and there is nothing new to say about her.
