* The Breonna Taylor murder sure looks premeditated to me. They had no evidence that the EMT had done anything illegal at all so they lied to get a no knock warrant for a search for a suspect they knew wasn't there so they could have the fun of violently breaking into the apartment in the middle of the night to spray it with bullets, murdering her and endangering people including a sleeping child in a neighboring apartment whom they narrowly missed murdering, then lied to the police about what happened in statements that contradicted multiple eye witness reports. Then instead of arresting the police assassins for the multiple felonies they commuted they arrested the victim's partner for standing his ground against people breaking into his apartment to murder them. They also grilled the victims mother in a way that suggested they were trying to pin the clearly premeditated police assassination of her daughter on the innocent partner.

* Thursday: The car started again, so that's two days keeping a charge. I came back to deal with a collection of arrivals which required me to finally start the livingroom furniture move I've been dreading. The issue is that I want one of the benches where the fish stand is, bbut to do that I need to move the tank onto a bench (a two person job and it's squirrel's game night so no chance of help at all. i moved small furniture so I could move the squirrel's wall bench which involved moving all the under bench storage so I could move the under window bench into the corner against the front wall which involved space the other bench needed to fit. i put a living room chair and my office chair temporarily against the window which sort of fucks up cat access to the window, though Tavy's found a way.

Some friends had ordered a new office chair they needed for working from home using stimulus check, only when it arrived it was the wrong chair and returning it was a hassle to I'm trying it out tonight in my office. I may end up switching the chairs back because this one, while brand new, more stable, lighter, and hardier isn't as well padded, but we'll see how it does with wheelchair cushions.

Another friend had mailed me three glorious tomato starts, hence the urgancy to get the new chair off the porch, because no way could I reach the bit of the garden these starts needed to go to get the best sun access without me making space in the living room for an extra chair, hence the tetris.

I used all the spoons, bruised a cheekbone, got mauled by an over excited Tavy who launched himself at me in his excitement, and am in extra pain, but it needed doing and now is half way done, even if it's not sustainable without moving the tank.

* Friday: I needed to get a few things done first, so Squirrel and I agreed he'd go get some sleep and we'd move the twenty tank when he got up. Which turned out to be very early Saturday morning. Moving an inhabited tank is a nightmare process, but better than moving the fish into a back up tank. All the equipment needs unplugging and putting somewhere safe. All the fish furniture which is saturated and muddy, need to be put somewhere they won't get contaminated or ruin anything. As much water as possible needs to me removed as possible without removing any fish and with as little loss of life as possible. It's still a shock to them, but less stress than chasing them around and inevitably missing some or stressing them so much they don't make it. My experience is I lose fewer fry and bottom feeders this way. It is also less work, but still a lot of work and exhausted. Inhabited tanks are heavy.

We got it over there and I gave it a good cleaning, refilled it and put it back together. Phase two complete. Tomorrow's plan involves a lot of futzing. I may have to excavate the spare living room lamp from the closet where it went during the Great renovation, which is a project in itself, as I fear this lamp may be Done. We'll see.

* Saturday: I am covered in Spider bits and dust, but I am vindicated in my belief that the furniture all fit in this configuration. (Squirrel kept asking if I was sure I'd measured right and would things really fit. Ha! I am really good at furniture tetris.) Of course it involved moving the chairs and the stuff stored under benches out, recleaning the floors, moving the stand, putting storage into the stand cabinet which I can now access, cleaning the floor again, moving the bench, cleaning the floor yet again, then putting the chairs and things back. I switched lamps, which involved digging it out of the closet, but I was tired of fussing with the glitchy one and this one is taller and thus better suited, if not nearly as pretty. Next I need to do more measuring and switch pictures around again. Phase five involves the nightmare of moving the Big Tank out of the office, which is going to be a major fucking issue.

However, as of tonight, the living room is in a way more functional configuration than we've ever had in this place. It would be better if it was bigger, but really getting the broken fireplace out of the corner is a massive fucking improvement. This configuration means that after there's a vaccine, I won't be doing a used furniture scavenger hunt for a large bookcase as I'd hoped, but when the time comes, I'm going to take measurements and see if I can't find a tall skinny one in the right dimensions or a suitable equivalent. I really do need more shelving, even with selling off a third of the collection last move. I may get rid of a chair. Well see how I feel once I've had time to live with this.

In Livia news, by Friday she'd worked out how to access her windowsill, and y bed time she'd decided to forgo the usual two weeks of observation for any new object before interacting with it, and sat on the new chair. She likes it! She likes the familiar chairs better, of course. Familiar things are always better than new ones, but it is nap worthy and defensible. Both of the Imperials have tried out the window sill bench now that I've put it back and they are pleased with this development despite their real distress at a third evening of furniture moving. Livia's tumm seems better today and she ate all her meat. Elder Kitty was latte for dinner, but I saved it for her. Livia was rather put out that other girl was getting dinner when she wasn't, but she was consoled for the loss of a hoped for Second dinner with a treat treasure hunt on my desk, so we are calling it a win.

Update: Livia spent most of the evening on her safety chair watching fish TV between naps. Someone finally put her fish TV back almost where it was only better!

* Wednesday, I foraged/died errands. Did essential things around the house, then Squirrel and I went out for a bit. While we were out, we picked up the painted monster pumpkin from friends.

Halloween I was having one of those days were the difficulty level of everything was turned waaaay the fuck up. I did manage the essentials, eventually. I got a lot of extra cad this year in hopes we'd get a whole bunch of trick or treaters, like last year, but alas, Captain Marvel escorted by two middle school aged brother, who clearly remembered I give out handfuls from last year. The little girls was one of the ones who has trouble really believing she can have a handful and not just one, so it took quite a bit of prompting. Luckily, she didn't notice Geoff Peterson Jr. sitting there under his lap full of gourds until after she got her candy, because she panicked a little being so close to a skeleton.

Squirrel and I cracked open the good scotch he got me for my birthday and drank it while watching attack the block.

It's nearly ten, but I leave the lights on until I go to bed, in case stoned/wasted grad students wander by as has happened. The rules ate simple: lights and hospitality to living or dead. I turn no one away, not even two Middle school boys who don't bother with costumes taking a little sister with down syndrome around. Everyone gets a treat. I take those rules seriously.

I think that's one of the things I like about the movie Trick 'r Treat. Oh, I adore the aesthetic, the intricately woven bits of non-linear plot, the kick ass acting, but it's the rare movie of it's type that makes it explicitly about rules that have absolutely nothing to do with punishing female sexuality. Leave the candles lit. Offer hospitality. Don't prey on those you think are weak because of how they look or the ways they are different. Break the very simple rules and retribution comes. Satisfying in the exact way life so often isn't.

* I had finale for the Bonds of Blood story on Horror MUSH, which ate my time and my brain, Tuesday. I did some compiling work, but I was exhausted from very little sleep between morning inspection, the phone, and assorted physical inconveniences. The mammals I live with had out done themselves on mess and I ended up having to do three loads of laundry plus deal with other assorted messes. I hit the need to reboot, and just gave up and went to bed with only a third of the news up on tumblr and nothing posted to Dreamwidth. Apologies.

Wednesday, I had errands and forage. Which wore me the fuck out as the forage line was long and I'm still not right physically. I'll do what I can tonight, but I'm struggling with stupid problems, including dinner not working out and having to start over from scratch. I can make no promises as to catching up, and yes, I've been watching multiple countries' election ews with real excitement.

Bonus: In the time between first dinner attempt and second dinner attempt Tavy took a big piss on the sofa, which I luckily discovered before sitting down. That's four loads of laundry in about sixteen hours, two of which were definitely Tavy's fault. (One could have been either of them. One was Squirrel/Elder Kitty.)

* Apparently I needed 14 hours of sleep. I'm still trying to figure out if I have a virus, if I'm just having a chronic illness thing, or if swimming really wiped me out this much. Add to the list: Do I have food poisoning? Some combination? All of the above? Who knows! Chronic Illness is full of these little mysteries.

I really was have a fairly productive evening once I escaped my room and even started some rp. Signs of trouble began to develop. I took extra pain meds and extra nausea meds. (Sometimes pain contributes to nausea. The head and neck ache were borderline for scaling up a level on my pain management, but with other assorted symptoms things were becoming intolerable. I waited for things to kick in be things were escalating too fast, so i bowed out of rrp, intending to take blankets and pillows to my bathroom to lie down.

Only it dawned on me a long, really hot salt bath might be the better option. This turned out to be the case. I was well enough to come back and work on the news eventually. Later on, i managed some nuts with my water, which helped. Things look stable for now.

I need them to be. It's my birthday and I have shit to do, including a party planned with secret pumpkins and the whole 9 yards.

What he did was clearly racist and definitely widely known to be not okay in the early oughts. He is slightly younger than me, and I definitely knew better in the 80's. I was teaching when the incident happened too, and the local public school districts here explicitly banned black face, brown face, etc.. If a kid had come to school looking like that, they'd have been at minimum been stopped on the way in and given a choice of washing their face or going back home. I can't imagine a teacher doing it. Diversity and anti racism training existed in the '90's. So I call bull shit on any claims he didn't know better. He grew up in a political family.

He had to know the likelihood of this being a problem later if he went into politics. I at sixteen knew that a bunch of the sexual decisions I was making meant I could ever run for office and this was the age before the Internet. I knew for sure I was closing a lot of future doors when I started posing nude at eighteen. And these things aren't even wrong. The fact that he did something as wrong as wearing black face in the 21st century as a grown ass man and somehow couldn't predict obvious future consequences raises serious questions about his judgement.

At the same time, I'm going to reiterate what I always say on these occasions: The deciding vote needs to be with the people in the communities he's harmed.

When it is an offense to one of the communities ibelong to, I use the formula: quality of apology + words and actions over time. A. Is the apology sincere? Does it demonstrate a real understanding if the type and magnitude of the harm done? Does it show real understanding of and empathy for the community harmed? B. Has the person not only amended their behavior, but taken positive action to help the community harmed? how well are they listening to criticisms and advise from the community over time?

A non-apology or a half assed apology isn't enough. I need you to prove to me I can trust you and that you aren't doing a quick burst of cheap activism to make it look like you changed before falling back into old patterns.

Every person has to draw their own conclusions about what constitutes enough proof of change. If no one is ever forgiven, then there is no incentive for people to learn and improve. We all fuck up, now and then. I know I do, despite the amount of time and effort I put into reeducating myself and listening o the voices of a variety of communities. At the same time? No fucking way am I going to sit on my hands and let people like Mel Gibson or Gloria Steinem get away with their bullshit without showing any real remorse or amendment. I reserve the right NOT to forgive, just as I reserve the right to forgive people like David Levine and Joy Reid, who fit the above criteria. I get to decide how I feel about stuff that hurts people like me. It's my job to listen when people in a different community are harmed.

Justin Trudeau has not been a good leader of his country. There are a whole host of issues on which he is all talk and no action. He is actively terrible on things like indigenous right and environmental justice. There is reason to think he's somewhat corrupt based on a recent scandal.

At the same time, people of colour in Canada are faced with a similar issue that Governor Northam's constituents in the states were faced with. They need to decide if the alternatives are enough worse to stick with Trudeau, and whether his apology + record on issues that effect their communities cancel out the previous behavior.

That's not my job to decide. I'm not Canadian and I'm pretty fucking pasty. My job is to listen to what people of colour in Canada are saying. So that's what I'm doing.

* The autodialers have been particularly aggressive the last couple of weeks. Monday there were five calls in the last hour before the alarm, plus I think three others earlier in my sleep cycle. Why don't I turn off the phone while I sleep? Because two of those calls were real. (A time sensitive medical one and the Coop telling me that my gravy will never come). The gravy thing is really distressing. It was the perfect vegetarian gravy: ideal taste and texture, super easy to use. Sigh. I went in and we switched the order to some other strange gravy. Let's hope I like it.

The really infuriating thing was three of the eight calls Monday was a robot from my medicare advantage that could not understand my voice calling to demand I self accuse for skipping a dose on one of my meds. 1. I haven't been skipping doses of this particular drug so WTF. 2. A bunch of my other meds allow some variable dosing. For example, I usually take one rantidine to smooth over the patch towards the end of my Omneprazole dose before the next dose kicks in, but I am allowed a second if there's break through nausea. Or I take three doses of my lung ampule when my lungs are bad, but I usually only need two a day and I'm allowed to do that because, you know time consuming and side effects. Why take more than I need if it's gong to raise my blood pressure and give me heart palpitations? Or I stop taking my AS meds when I'm on antibiotics. I'm a competent adult and I know the difference between things like simvastatin and levithyroxine where you don't want to skip and things where my Doctor trusts my judgement and lets me take what I need.

Look, I get why you want meds tracking for say, patients with serious psychiatric or heart conditions or dementia, but that's not me. I feel like one size fits all is a terrible idea. This should be opt in for patients who are able to manage their own affairs. Also, I really, really resented the accusatory tone of the recorded message, especially since I hadn't missed any doses. There was no opt out option. I was forced to block the number, thus freeing another scammer to start the harassment cycle again.

Apparently they only have one autodialer, because a live human woke me up to harass me over my simvastatin again on Tuesday (one of five calls to wake me up.) even though I still hadn't missed any doses. Luckily my grumpy rant caused the live human to opt me out which they actually can do. I

This nanny bullshit makes me hostile. I'm a mentally vigorous person who juggles 21-25 meds on an elaborate schedule every fucking day. My brain process large quantities of information on a regular basis. I do not need constant interference just because my disability means I am extremely fucking poor. I want to be left the fuck alone unless they are offering me something that actually helps like better benefits. Stealing my sleep so a machine can scold me is not helping.

Anyway, Tuesday I went down to do a DNR form with my Doctor nd a nice lady she was training. I have very strong views about things I do not want done to me when I'm unconscious or incoherent because I have a realistic view of what, say a feeding tube or ventilator are really like and what my likely end of life is going to look like given my assorted degenerative genetic diseases. My family has always been like that: realistic about the facts of dying, prone to choosing quality over quantity, rejecting the fucked up denial of American death culture. I come from a loooong line of people who make jokes on their own death bed and emphatically reject heroic measures when it's clearly time to just let go. Like a lot of health care workers, they too had their own DNRs and had a similar attitude towards the whole thing, so we chatted and did up the form and sent me on my way. Next on the list: make an appointment with Law advocates to get the legal end sorted.

Don't worry, gentle readers, this does not signal my imminent demise. It's just that I've been meaning to get around to this stuff for several years, but you know: chronic illness.

* The other day a very old friend used the phrase "Vegetarian Libertine" to describe me in a story about something that happened over a decade ago and the phrase has stuck in my mind ever since. Certainly it did describe me in my heyday, but there was something fundamentally pleasing about it that goes deeper.

See, the "liber" in "Libertine" means freedom. In the original early modern usage it meant free thinker. This meant of course atheists and agnostics, but also people with a variety of unorthodox thoughts on a wide range of topics like ethics, government, natural history, etc.. Of course given the tenor of the times freedom from conventional religious morality implied in a lot of minds an embrace of things like heavy drinking, debauchery, theater going, etc., and so you get the more earthy meaning that carries forward to us. Wine was never my thing, but oh did I love sex and I was definitely a free thinker on a variety of topics, for all I am a Buddhist. I did live a wild, wild life full of wit and philosophy and free love.

Of course I live a rather monkish life now. I am too ill and tired and poor to go hunting for lovers, but those old libertines often ended up in bodies as ruined or more ruined than mine. John Wilmot, lord Rochester died in his thirties, incontinent and his face literally rotting away from the syph, and he was a Libertine's libertine. So I guess it fits still in a way.

I burned so fast and bright and I don't regret it. I am still a free thinker, here in these long days of my ruin.
