Food from the '70's wasn't that good really. We were poor and grew most of our own vegetables in the summer so when we had to switch in the Autumn to supermarket it was always disappointing. Here in the 21st century, better quality more flavourful vegetables are in the supermarkets, even the discount ones.

When we had a babysitter we'd get to pick a frozen dinner which was super exciting because we actually got to chose what we ate and the packaging was cute. Rareness + choice made it a special treat. Libbyland tasted better than the other frozen dinners, but like them, the texture was distinctly off. I can get far better microwave dinners at literally any store now in a far wider variety.

For the record, I first saw my first micro-wave when I was six and never used one myself until I had my first restaurant job, and didn't live anywhere with one until I was an adult.. As you noted the price point was really high relative to wages. My parents worked three jobs between them and were always struggling. Microwaves were strange exotic rich people things. When I was a teen my dad got my mom a toaster oven for Christmas and it was super exciting.

I do desperately miss a few things like Aspen Soda, but if I want to splurge there are higher end brands I can buy now that I Know are better. It's just Aspen was one of like Four regular priced sodas you could by in half gallon/2 liter plastic bottles. (I remember how angry we were when they used metric conversion as an excuse to do what we now call shrinkflation, but I forget when it happened relative to Aspen soda availability.). The issue here is price point. Aspen was way better than say seven up or rootbeer for the same price, and like birch beer, was a rare treat for special occasions. If you offered me Jones, or Weinhards, or that imported orange soda with real juice and sugar, I'd take that over aspen, but I'd take aspen over any normal priced two liter.

For real, food is SO MUCH better now. The variety is better. The quality is usually better. There are so many good vegetarian and other special diet options that didn't exist yet in the 20th Century. The ground work for a lot of the things I eat now was started in the '70's with both the adoption of more natural foods (often considered hippy foods then) and food varieties from so many other cultures as you mention in your video. Seriously, I am grateful. I am old enough to have had to hand make my veggie burgers as a young adult. I spent the first couple decades I was alive having to eat things that made me some degree of ill because that was all that was available that we could afford. I miss a handful of discontinued foods, but I wouldn't trade all I have now to go back to my options in the '70's.

* I think I wrote this Monday: Tavy and Livia had a rough evening. Late afternoon they chased the grad students doing socially distanced and masked sunbathing off the lawn so they could power wash the gazebo. Tavy thought the workers were hissing and growling at him and he spent a couple of hours sporadically hissing and growling back.

Something's also clearly on fire near enough to us that the nasty smoke smell and lowered air quality are really messing with me.

Then the smoke detector went off, panicking the Imperial couple who ran out to see if I was scared. Long silence. Me: Could it be the smoke? Detector: CHIRP! Imperial couple *panics* I double check to make sure nothing inside could be doing it and turn on the hood and the bathroom vents just in case. Detector: CHIRP! It was too sporadic to be reacting to something. It went off again while I was putting on my shoes.

I bought two new 9 volts braving the store before it closed. Luckily it was sparsely populated and people were following the mandatory mask and distancing order. Luckily, there was just enough left on a card to cover two 9-volts. Let's hope I don't need meds again this month, shall we?

My arm is borked again, but it was finally cool enough for squirrel to sleep, so my unsteady ass climbed the ladder. I had to let go the lintel to futz with it and it still wasn't fixed. I made multiple attempts. I ended up waking him after all. Turned out it was my bedroom detector a couple feet away from the one I was trying to fix. Or possibly both of them. IDk. We spent an hour between us. I had two cats hiding under my desk for most of it. I had to go collect Elder kitty from the top of the thirty in the middle of it, as those lights are fragile and I'm scared she'll fall. (The light on the twenty she sits on is sturdier and the tank is a lot lower. She can get on and off easily. I've seen her thinking about trying to straight jump off the thirty). I've had to do this once or twice most nights since her stroke.

The Imperial couple did eventually come out to lounge around the livingroom where they could see me and each other, but they are jumpy. While I was writing this, I blew my nose, and Tavy jumped high in the air sideways off the sofa landing about 5 feet away, terrifying poor Livia who couldn't work out which way to run.

* Wednesday: I had that thing where when I tried to get up the first time I almost threw up from the pain. I opted for extra medication and comforting the Imperial couple, who are understandably distressed. Livia in particular is taking it hard. At one point she was wandering around the area where elder kitty died squeaking plaintively. Elder kitty had warmed up to her enough that they would hang out together a couple of feet apart just like Livia wanted, and they'd been extra close after the first stroke. She kept waking me up for reassurance, poor thing. Tavy's just generally been discombobulated for the last week and a half and he needed a lot of extra cuddle time this evening.

Once I did make it up there was a lot of cleaning to do. The bed to strip and change, boxes to tend to, livingroom soft furnishings to hand clean and febreeze, and lots of little things I'd been too busy to sort out properly between the ongoing right arm issue and Elder Kitty's rapid decline. There will be more of that tomorrow if my arms are working well enough.

We all miss her.

* Livia still doesn't have much appetite and they are both clingy and unsettled. I can't blame them.

I can't seem to make any headway on the pain situation. It's my own fault; I keep moving in my sleep. I'm usually more disciplined than this. I think it's a bit of a spiral. I was undisciplined a couple weeks ago once, which made me feel crap so it's harder to remember to stay still after I drift off. When I'm awake I try to roll it back, but even the magic tub can't shave off enough to undo more damage than I do when I sleep. I am out of tricks. I would call the doctor at this point, except I know perfectly well there is nothing to be done, but endure and try to keep my meds down.

* I found an angle that completely thrashes my torso muscles, but which allowed sleep. Tavy was pleased as he got on the human sleeps as is proper. I need to go out for supplementary meds tomorrow, which I do not want to do. I think the antibiotics are working after all, though I have doubts if it will be enough having just swallowed the last one. I'm at the sorting out how much of the crappiness is infection and how much is meds stage. I can make it to the bathroom without getting seriously winded, which is progress.

* My arm continues messed up, to the point I tore or badly sprained something on the outside of the arm where forearm meets elbow. So now not only can I not lift a full cup of water or make a fist, but I can't twist my arm at all. Doing dishes was a painful adventure. How did I sprain/tear it? Lifting a half full laundry basket onto my bed. No really. I used to lift weights and spar everyday, but am defeated by a couple of pounds of cloth and plastic. I've made amake shift sling out of ace bandages, but it's not really helping.

* So it turns out I had two infections only vulnerable to one antibiotic. Separate single antibiotics. We cleared the big one and the minor one surged and attacked. This meant a couple hours sleep, being unable to go back to sleep for the pain, the doctor, then bureaucracy. I slide under the office close deadline by about five minutes. (There was a lot of things I had to do there and the Doctor took ages. I'm wilted and feeling crap). Tomorrow I go back to get more antibiotics.
