"Slightly complicating matters is the fact that members of the Slim family recently issued a statement supporting the execution of Mitchell—initially, court filings revealed that the daughter of Slim and mother of the child “passionately” argued against the death penalty. But as Navajo Nation Council delegate Carl Slater told the Navajo Times on Friday, the matter at hand is not one of whether the victims’ family’s wishes are being adhered to in terms of the levied justice but that the nation’s sovereignty was purposefully ignored and diminished by the U.S. “The Navajo Nation never opted in to impose the death penalty,” he told the Times. “It is not the decision of one person or one group of family to make the decision.”
Cases like these—ones that are extremely messy, grisly, and entangled in centuries of convoluted federal Indian law—are the kind that are meant to test both the American legal system and America’s commitment to tribal sovereignty. It’s a test that the country routinely, often gleefully, fails. It chose vengeance and violence. It opted for a flashy display of what it has decided to define as justice. And it did so against the express wishes of a sovereign nation. The case of Mitchell now stands as a harbinger of future federal action in Indian Country, should the U.S. federal government continue carrying out death penalty sentences. With Mitchell’s life now stolen by the state, America has tested a new boundary in its historic effort to undermine sovereignty at all turns and at all costs. Now it knows full well how to kill Native people convicted of crimes on tribal lands, sovereignty be damned."

* Y'all might remember The whole can't keep the antibiotic down situation last week. It was meant to be a ten day run. I managed a week. I'm sick again with the same symptom set. Sigh. Yes, I'm calling the doctor. Don't panic though. Yes, sick is scary especially now in someone with my health history, but really, odds are it's the lung infection rebounding and not something new.
In other news, Tavy is still refusing to go in my room except that one night when I was really sick. he is All Over Me when I'm out in the common areas, to the point I'm having trouble eating or typing. Tonight he worked out he can sit behind me in my chair, which means he doesn't need me to hol him for hours at a time which hurts a lot. He is coming for shorter arm cuddles, but not wanting me to hold him up while he sleeps.
In yet more cat news, Livia took the plunge Wednesday. She's been toying with the idea of staying on top o me after bedtime pets for longer and longer intervals. Today she finally did it! she slept right on top of the human the way Tavy used to before the elder Kitty decline and death. She had the best time. she needed encouragement to get back on after I shifted position the first couple of times, but she'd already learned to step off and then right back on by the third iteration. she liked it so much it took hours for me to get up because every time I stopped moving, she climbed back on for a pet and a nap.
Livia is definitely winning at life.

But as Navajo Nation Council delegate Carl Slater told the Navajo Times on Friday, the matter at hand is not one of whether the victims’ family’s wishes are being adhered to in terms of the levied justice but that the nation’s sovereignty was purposefully ignored and diminished by the U.S. “The Navajo Nation never opted in to impose the death penalty,” he told the Times. “It is not the decision of one person or one group of family to make the decision.”
Cases like these—ones that are extremely messy, grisly, and entangled in centuries of convoluted federal Indian law—are the kind that are meant to test both the American legal system and America’s commitment to tribal sovereignty. It’s a test that the country routinely, often gleefully, fails. It chose vengeance and violence. It opted for a flashy display of what it has decided to define as justice. And it did so against the express wishes of a sovereign nation. The case of Mitchell now stands as a harbinger of future federal action in Indian Country, should the U.S. federal government continue carrying out death penalty sentences. With Mitchell’s life now stolen by the state, America has tested a new boundary in its historic effort to undermine sovereignty at all turns and at all costs. Now it knows full well how to kill Native people convicted of crimes on tribal lands, sovereignty be damned."

* Y'all might remember The whole can't keep the antibiotic down situation last week. It was meant to be a ten day run. I managed a week. I'm sick again with the same symptom set. Sigh. Yes, I'm calling the doctor. Don't panic though. Yes, sick is scary especially now in someone with my health history, but really, odds are it's the lung infection rebounding and not something new.
In other news, Tavy is still refusing to go in my room except that one night when I was really sick. he is All Over Me when I'm out in the common areas, to the point I'm having trouble eating or typing. Tonight he worked out he can sit behind me in my chair, which means he doesn't need me to hol him for hours at a time which hurts a lot. He is coming for shorter arm cuddles, but not wanting me to hold him up while he sleeps.
In yet more cat news, Livia took the plunge Wednesday. She's been toying with the idea of staying on top o me after bedtime pets for longer and longer intervals. Today she finally did it! she slept right on top of the human the way Tavy used to before the elder Kitty decline and death. She had the best time. she needed encouragement to get back on after I shifted position the first couple of times, but she'd already learned to step off and then right back on by the third iteration. she liked it so much it took hours for me to get up because every time I stopped moving, she climbed back on for a pet and a nap.
Livia is definitely winning at life.
