* "Shocked by the rise of the right? Then you weren’t paying attention:" https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/may/24/country-racist-elections-liberals-anti-racism-movement

"There are many differences between the places I’ve mentioned, but for now I’d like to focus on one thing that unites them: that the countries which keep producing these shocks are every bit as racist, xenophobic and discriminatory as their voting habits suggest. This is not some new virus; it’s a susceptibility to a chronic illness that has crippled us for years. Ethnic and racial plurality and migration as a lived experience are older than any nation state, but equality is a relatively new idea, and some don’t like it. People forget how recently African Americans couldn’t vote, and that Winston Churchill told his cabinet “Keep England White” was a good campaign slogan.

These electoral victories are, largely but not exclusively, the products of those age-old prejudices: not because everyone who voted for them was racist, but because all the racists who did go to the polls voted for them. The intensity of that racism is now growing, as the victors use their podiums and despatch boxes to amplify their bigotry, giving confidence and licence for people to spread their poison. Take Britain. In January 2016, 64% of people from an ethnic minority said they had been targeted by a stranger. That’s before Brexit, and already terrible. That proportion rose to 76% this year. Things were bad. They are getting worse."

* I have deliberately said nothing much about Julian Assange, though I have read and posted pertinent news articles, because up until today my thoughts have been pretty fucking complex and hard to explain with appropriate nuance. Part of this is because I'm agnostic about a lot of this and I don't really trust much of anyone involved for pretty good reasons.

Today this changes. Rachel Maddow explains my position better than I can honestly, so I'm just going to leave this here.

* I went to take the books to the time traveling drop, and the asshole catering van was blocking the drop zone, so I had to park and walk them over. The grocery store had a jungle of assorted mature flowering tomato plants out. I had no money, of course, but they had a bunch of varieties I like. No Thai Basil, alas. Let's hope the starts are still there next month. It is not that I actually need tomato plants, but....

Anyway. I'm posting this late because I tried to weed wack the news links. I made it all the way to Monday, but I'm not going to be able to finish. Staying up this late means I'll likely such tonight, but dealing with Friday and Monday's leftovers feels more manageable.

* So I rather liked the White Queen for all it's faults. The White Princess was such a terrible mess that even the stellar quality of the acting couldn't save it. I debated if I wanted to keep going, given lass season's debacle, but Catherine of Aragon lured me in. I want to say first off that the actresses playing Catherine and her principal lady (Is that Lina? I'm bad at names and IMDB is zero help.) are acting the shit out of their parts. I really like the who Lady in waiting and the Moorish soldier sub plot. I really like how they are playing up the cultural differences. The history though? *#$#&$%*$! I am so incredibly angry that they went with the deflowering that I'm not sure I can keep watching this mess, and that's not the only thing I'm really not happy with. I'm halfway through episode three. The Spanish Princess is going to be another Versailles level debacle, isn't it?

* I think the problem with "Reckless" is they tried to cross a spy thriller with "The Bridges of Madison County." It fucks with the pacing.
