* Saturday: The Antibiotic is working on my lungs and sinuses, but it's also making me very sick, as in spend all day throwing up sick. The problem is, I've burned through a lot of the supplies of things to eat when I'm that kind of sick since March and there are fundamental problems, like the people buying my food for me don't shop anywhere that they sell the two types of crackers can manage on days when it's this bad. Crackers were essential for stopping the cycle.

I burned the insurance autodraw money on things to eat when I'm throwing up. I know I shouldn't have, but I have nearly a week more of this and I can't keep meds down when I can't stop puking. I'd already paid everything but the car insurance, so there was no cushion.

UPDATE: I am overdrawn. Apparently that confusing message from my insurer a couple days ago meant they were taking a brand new forty dollar annual fee out Sunday instead of just the usual amount at the end of the month. I am completely fucked. Some kind person chipped in 15.00 Sunday, but when I checked this morning I was negative 36.00 and the fees are going to accumulate daily. I am fucked. Please help, because except that 15.00, nothing is coming in until the 5th or so of September.

(I’d still have been overdrawn if i hadn’t bought the crackers etc., but i thought I’d have ‘til almost the end of the month before the autodraw. I think they are still doing the autodraw.)

* Sunday. The crackers have stabilized things enough for me to eat things like cheese and crackers (cheese also bought on Saturday's mission). It's still bad though. I don't know how I can make it until next Friday.

I forgot to mention, this is the best tomato crop I've grown since I left the East Coast. Some alchemy of sun and water has balanced things just right. Before I got too sick, I'd harvested four from the oldest two plants. One of the special gift plants has what looks like a full sized green tomato, another is in the early stages. The third gift plant is budding. Growing season is long here, so I have hopes they will all produce before frost takes them like most of last year's crop. (The plants matured late last year. It was heart breaking.)

Livia has clearly figured out that I hide the kibbles until she eats enough of her meat. I can tell, because she'll eat a few mouthfuls then come check to see if I put the bowls out. When I haven't she goes back, eats a little more, rinse and repeat until I feel like she's eaten enough. Me to Livia: If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any cookies. How can you have any cookies if you don't eat yer meat?

In other cat news, Squirrel got home from work the other night to find Tavy asleep on the same spot on the sofa as when he left. He was interrogating him about it while petting him and I was like, "The Emperor has recently discovered he's a middle aged Terror and that long naps between rampages are excellent." Squirrel was like "Middle Aged? What is he, three?" Me: Livia is three; Tavy is five. Squirrel: O.o Me: really shows one the passing of time doesn't it? Him: *sad sound of late middled aged regret*

* NOTE: I was never an English major and am certainly not an Austen scholar, nor have I studied any of these in a school setting since P&P in HS in the '80's. I just like the books.

Some of you may know that Persuasion is my favorite Austen book. I fell in love with it the first time I read it, and I just love it more each time I reread it. This may seem odd, given how much I dislike Mansfield Park. After all, Persuasion has some of Austen's sharpest social criticism along similar lines as Pride and Prejudice, but has a gentle, understated heroine, more like Fanny from Mansfield. It would surprise no one that I adore Eliza Bennent, but I also love Catherine from Northanger and Elinor Dashwood from Sense an Sensibility (The writing is a bit sluggish in S&S, which means I don't reread it often, but the bones are good). My point is, that these are three different character types who I am perfectly capable of enjoying. I would argue that my beloved Anne is another atempt at some of the things she was trying to convey with Elinor and to a certain extent with Fanny, only written at the height of her skill at the end of her life.

I have always had trouble explaining why exactly I adore Persuasion the way I do. I mean, sure, it's overtly feminist in spots. (I'd argue all her writing is feminist, it's just a lot of it is less overt, than say, the exchange in which Anne points out at that all the books being cited are by men and thus biased). Anne is far from the first heroine trapped in and constantly punished by gendered expectation and manners in her society, but Persuasion really brings that to the fore. This isn't exactly it though.

Tonight I finally put my finger on it: It's a queer culture thing. Bear with me. I'm not claiming this is what Austen was intending. People have made arguments for queer subtext around certain of the men in Persuasion, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about Anne and Wentworth. Yes, it's very clearly a straight relationship. I'm talking about a deeper resonance, and it's a struggle to put it into words.

Modern dating apps and social media and queer liberation and all the rest have made LGBTQIA+ dating easier, but it's a recent change and in some places it's still like it was. For a lot of the last millennium or so in European culture, courtship, seduction, etc., had to be underground. Subtle things conveyed in silences, in looks exchanged over innocuous sounding conversations with double meanings, in body language, in coded clothes and secret passwords. Outside of sex work, the way a lot of people connected was a careful, often slow business, involving feeling each other out and the suppression of more overt displays of interest while people tried to work out if the other person felt the ame. It's been pointed out that this is why the image of hands hesitantly touching and than grasping each other more firmly when the other person reciprocates is such a prominent image in queer cinema and now TV.

Touch is still so often dangerous. It can attract homophobic harassment and violence. Particularly for transfolk, though for queer folk in general there is always a chance that the person one reaches towards might beat or murder one.

Touch is dangerous, but it is so powerful. It is liberation, it is love.

So back to Anne, loving and desiring Wentworth so intently without any hope, being treated as sexless and a useful convenience by people who should value her. Back to Anne who is only really SEEN by the select few with the discernment to look. Most people only see the surfaces, and she is fundamentally at the mercy of those judgements from the undecerning for most of the novel. she has a fine appreciation of music, books, and poetry, that most people in her circle don't share.

Once Wentworth realizes he is interested in her, the courtship is done under everybody else's radar. They are at the mercy of other people's whims, of social constraints, of societal expectation. They snatch moments to exchange a few inadequate sentences and telling looks. They are in constant peril of never understanding each other becaue of gossip, because those snatched moments and cryptic messages are inadequate to convey what they feel. They are both deathly afraid of being rejected and irreparably hurt if they declare to the other one something of what the want too boldly first. What if they read the hints wrong? What if Wentworth believes all the gossip? What if Anne is reading him wrong in Bath? For how many centuries have queer couples danced this dance in one form or another. They are very straight, but this feels like a queer courtship. the dilemna is resolved because he overhears her in conversation with another character and reads the signals right. Finally. He declares his feelings clearly with his pen. Finally. When she's handed off to him casually in the street to take home and they finally, finally connect... Damn. It's earned, it's so earned, and it feels like magic.

I am nothing like Anne. My oldest continuous friend has referred to me in my heyday as Sexzilla, for fuck's sake. I did now and then play with subtlety because I could, but for the most part, I decided who I wanted and ethics and orientation permitting, I went hunting and generally caught who I aimed for. In my youth I didn't need much patience or finesse. I came from a place and culture and time where flirtation needed to do the heavy lifting of trading disease status and sexual interests, and I have likened it to contract bridge, though it also happened to be very sexy. there is no choice in waisting time with someone who wasn't serious about condoms and who didn't have enough overlap in taste to be worth the effort. Better to move on and find someone else. Now in the long twilight celibacy of my disability I have had to learn to bank my flames, but I was a bold thing once upon a time.

Anne still speaks to be on some fundamental level, some ancestral queer cultural resonance perhaps, or maybe it's a generational thing: the way plague shaped half of of us into people cautious of making that first move because the stakes were so high and the other half into risk takers trying to grab what joy we could before it all got snuffed out by bombs or virus. I was never an Anne, but we all have known some. Those pre-stonewall men I hung out with for a while still had a lot of those habits of carefulness, of slowly feeling things out, of flirtation that could be brushed off as no such thing if not reciprocated. They'd lived through more than one revolution, but you could see echoes of the terrible world before the year of my birth in their eyes, in their manners, in their references, in the way they flirted with me and each others. there was something similar in the late in life trans women I used to hang out with. It was so alien to the younger transfolk that the other Xer and I used to have to translate back and forth between the Boomers on one hand and Millenials on the other. Their cultures and frames of reference were so far apart it was like the divide between middle and modern English.

I have said often, I'm terribly glad we've moved on. I have always wanted something better for those coming behind us, but I come from a culture and a time and a place, and Anne has spoken to my heart from the first day i met her in the pages of Persuasion. I suspect she always will.

* I think I wrote this Monday: Tavy and Livia had a rough evening. Late afternoon they chased the grad students doing socially distanced and masked sunbathing off the lawn so they could power wash the gazebo. Tavy thought the workers were hissing and growling at him and he spent a couple of hours sporadically hissing and growling back.

Something's also clearly on fire near enough to us that the nasty smoke smell and lowered air quality are really messing with me.

Then the smoke detector went off, panicking the Imperial couple who ran out to see if I was scared. Long silence. Me: Could it be the smoke? Detector: CHIRP! Imperial couple *panics* I double check to make sure nothing inside could be doing it and turn on the hood and the bathroom vents just in case. Detector: CHIRP! It was too sporadic to be reacting to something. It went off again while I was putting on my shoes.

I bought two new 9 volts braving the store before it closed. Luckily it was sparsely populated and people were following the mandatory mask and distancing order. Luckily, there was just enough left on a card to cover two 9-volts. Let's hope I don't need meds again this month, shall we?

My arm is borked again, but it was finally cool enough for squirrel to sleep, so my unsteady ass climbed the ladder. I had to let go the lintel to futz with it and it still wasn't fixed. I made multiple attempts. I ended up waking him after all. Turned out it was my bedroom detector a couple feet away from the one I was trying to fix. Or possibly both of them. IDk. We spent an hour between us. I had two cats hiding under my desk for most of it. I had to go collect Elder kitty from the top of the thirty in the middle of it, as those lights are fragile and I'm scared she'll fall. (The light on the twenty she sits on is sturdier and the tank is a lot lower. She can get on and off easily. I've seen her thinking about trying to straight jump off the thirty). I've had to do this once or twice most nights since her stroke.

The Imperial couple did eventually come out to lounge around the livingroom where they could see me and each other, but they are jumpy. While I was writing this, I blew my nose, and Tavy jumped high in the air sideways off the sofa landing about 5 feet away, terrifying poor Livia who couldn't work out which way to run.

* Wednesday: I had that thing where when I tried to get up the first time I almost threw up from the pain. I opted for extra medication and comforting the Imperial couple, who are understandably distressed. Livia in particular is taking it hard. At one point she was wandering around the area where elder kitty died squeaking plaintively. Elder kitty had warmed up to her enough that they would hang out together a couple of feet apart just like Livia wanted, and they'd been extra close after the first stroke. She kept waking me up for reassurance, poor thing. Tavy's just generally been discombobulated for the last week and a half and he needed a lot of extra cuddle time this evening.

Once I did make it up there was a lot of cleaning to do. The bed to strip and change, boxes to tend to, livingroom soft furnishings to hand clean and febreeze, and lots of little things I'd been too busy to sort out properly between the ongoing right arm issue and Elder Kitty's rapid decline. There will be more of that tomorrow if my arms are working well enough.

We all miss her.

* Livia still doesn't have much appetite and they are both clingy and unsettled. I can't blame them.

I can't seem to make any headway on the pain situation. It's my own fault; I keep moving in my sleep. I'm usually more disciplined than this. I think it's a bit of a spiral. I was undisciplined a couple weeks ago once, which made me feel crap so it's harder to remember to stay still after I drift off. When I'm awake I try to roll it back, but even the magic tub can't shave off enough to undo more damage than I do when I sleep. I am out of tricks. I would call the doctor at this point, except I know perfectly well there is nothing to be done, but endure and try to keep my meds down.

* Monday, the pain was too extreme for me to go out. I experimented with working all evening in a sling, which was uncomfortable, but seemed to help some. I still feel aggressively terrible by every measure, but I absolutely have to go out tomorrow as someone turned in my ATM card and I need to rescue it before it's destroyed. Also I really, really nedto forage. Sigh.

Tuesday morning I went to get the card on the grounds I didn't trust my self to get it together fast enough after sleep to do three important things before 6PM. This was the correct decision. I did manage forage and library at the other end, but I couldn't have managed rush hour traffic fast enough to get the card. After days of blessed cool it is summer again, just in time for day two of yet another chronic illness hell on top of the ongoing pain crisis.

I want to thank everyone who has been patient with my sporadic posting throughout this on going complicated medical situation. I take the last antibiotic before bed. Thursday I'll start trying to stabilize the situation.

In cat news, the Emperor Octavian is now a sofa pisser by preference. I've caught him twice and he's prime suspect on a third incident. unfortunately he enjoys wrestling both fol and bubble wrap so neither serve as deterrents. I'm going to have to keep a litter box on the sofa and keep washing covers on the regular.

I've not seen Livia pee on the sofa in almost a week, which s not absolute proof, but along with observed litter box visits is suggestive. She seems a lot better. She's taken to the goosh, and I've started letting her have some special girl kibbles as a treat, but I'm not ready to free feed her yet. I've got a system going where Tavy comes and stares at me hopefully from a particular position and I slip him his bowl to snack on. I've going to continue this until the weather cools for real most likely, since it is important from her to improve her hydration and having most of her food be wet helps with that.

* Game of Thrones this week was an impressive display of fundamental incompetence on every level. The writing started noticeably deteriorating in season three and has often been incoherent since season four, and the costume department has always been a mess, but mostly the other departments were still making an effort. Not today, alas.

For some reason the lighting department didn't even try and no one in cinematography, editing, the director, nor anyone involved anywhere in the production cared that they were often filming basically nothing. I'm not kidding here. Most of the first half hour was vaguely mottled darkness punctuated by the occasional shot of silhouettes or Daenerys or Davos, who for some reason were the only people who's faces Cinematography and Lighting thought we needed to see. It would have be laughably bad if it weren't so frustrating. There was an occasional visible scene here and there after that, but the episode as a whole was nearly unwatchable, to the point I wandered off at one point to wash my interior windows forgetting it was on. Here is a dramatic zoom towards a triangle of pitch black, which I can only imagine was intended to convey the fundamental nihilism and pointlessness of the show at this point. Here is a wide pan of vaguely leprous dark as if they thought that their inability to shoot anything visible to the naked eye was some how impressive.

The only way to get any clue as to what was happening was the equally incompetent sound design. They decided to go with blasting the foley and background sound while keeping any dialog to a soft mumble one had to strain to parse over all the meaningless noise. I assume the lack blob on the field of grey with wing noises was Jon Snow doing nothing of import, for example, and the zombie sounds meant that the long sequence of the camera following faceless silhouettes was Arya hiding from the ice zombies. It might have had more suspense to it if they had maybe let us see the ice zombies and Arya's face before the end of the sequence when Beric showed up with his flaming sword and thus a visible face.

What little I could tell of the tactics made no sense. Before the frost dragon showed up, why were they flying around on dragons doing nothing? Wouldn't it have made way more sense to be raking the ice zombie hoard with dragon fire? what is the point of having dragons in a battle like this if you don't use them? That goes a hundred times more for after the retreat behind the walls. Since they made the "artistic" decision not to have any of the characters except Davos, Beric, and Daenerys lit well enough to see, why couldn't they wear helmets, which is the logical fucking thing to do in every battle ever. the cinematic excuse that they can't wear helmets is null and void if you are planning to show an hour and a half of poorly lit silhouettes struggling indistinctly against an equally poorly lit foe.

If the plan was to simply broadcast darkness with shitty sound design, it seems to me they could have saved a lot of money and done it like a radio play. If they had competently recorded what dialog there was in a studio with narration for the blind, I would have been able to go do something useful and been able to tell what was going on instead of sitting there getting angrier and and angrier at the impossibility of guessing what action was occurring.

I do not understand why they'd spend all that money to shoot about an hour of incoherent darkness out of an hour and a half show. Couldn't they tell from the dailies that nothing was visible? If this was the good footage, what was the bad footage like?

So did anything at all happen this week? Was anyone able to tell?

* I have lost track of how long I've had this lung infection. A month? I keep thinking I'm almost better, then it ramps up again. Today is what counts as bad even on my fucked up scale. (Coughing completely borking sleep, rising fever, shakes, dizzy spells, etc.). There's no proof it's bacterial, so I'm treating it as a virus until it proves not to be. It is exhausting and my concentration is not great. Quality and quantity of postings may be effected.

Someone blerped all over the office. I managed to break the pettin throne cleaning it. I am apparently out of wood epoxy and haven't really the hand dexterity r strength to fix it even if I did. I have brought out the light box, which is super fragile, too tall, and wide to be ideal for a cat of LM's years or the spot where I put it, but I know it can hold Livia's weight as she's biggest. Moving it has already rather distressed livia as she likes to nap on it where it was. As with the dying space heater, I need to start looking for some sort of replacement. I am furious at myself for ruining the pettin throne with my clumsiness when it could have easily served another generation of cats.

Update 12:13AM: LM has accepted the emergency backup temporary pettin throne. Tavy is wary; Livia is put out.

* Re: Kavanaugh's calendars. Admittedly, I'm a bit younger, so high School was '84-'86, but the tech was the same. Excluding things like school dances of which I attended a total of three including less than an hour at Senior Prom, my calendars didn't show any of the parties I went to. Oh, you'd get work/sports/enrichment scheduling, but for the sort of parties where people were drinking? My boys would be like: Hey! There's a party after work or tonight or whatever. And I'd be like: Sure. Why don't I drive. (This was because I didn't drink or smoke and that way I could make sure my knuckleheaded friends/lovers would get home okay.) Why the fuck would I, an intelligent teenager, be leaving evidence lying around my parents house that I was about to be at a party where everyone else was going to be plastered and or high as fuck? And half the time they'd be telling me night of in person anyway and my calendar was at home because it was the '80's and calendars were all paper.

Anyway, my point is, as someone who was a teen in the time period before the World Wide Web and when cell phones were huge, just phones, and only for rich assholes, I find it way more likely that any drunken parties he was going to were word of mouth than otherwise. Just saying. like I never once saw one of my friends or one of the very Kavanaugh like assholes at my school whip out a physical calendar and write down when and where they planned to get drunk that weekend.

This is geometrically more important if you have a centrist Democrat like Joseph Manchin, Joe Donnelly, Doug Jones, Jon Tester, and Heidi Heitkamp; or Republicans like Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, Bob Corker, Jeff Flake, Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski. (For Flake, Corker, Collins, and Murkowski please call for a proper independent investigation by the FBI and a return to normal Senate procedure in cases like this. For Scott and Rubio emphasize Kavanaugh's racism and support for racial profiling, for Collins and Murkowski emphasize the right to chose, the nominee allegedly having attempted to violently rape someone, and the Jane Doe case where he tried to force a raped immigrant teen to carry against her will, With Murowski, you might also mention his opposition to programs benefiting Alaska Natives). Jeff Flake of Arizona may be softening! Please, if you are from Arizona, keep the pressure on! Contact Chuck Schumer and ask him to whip the Democrats so as to get them to stand in united opposition. It wouldn't hurt to demand your Republican Senators call for a proper FBI Background investigation. They won't, but pressuring them shows them there might be consequences.

* Livia's no good very bad day: It started out fine. The Imperial couple realized I was bathing before bed and sensibly retired to my room for pre-Bedtime naps. I found them there: her cradled on the body pillow up near the head of the bed, him making a comfortable donut at the foot, just waiting for me to come to make him a leg mest for the real bedtime. They were so comfortable that thee was no milling about when I got into bed. Everyone had their back stroked and when back to dozing while i did things like reconfigure pillows and take the just beore sleep meds. I read a couple of chapter of Ms. McGuire, then I turned off the light. Tavy climbed on to my legs in expectation of hours of stillness. Livia pressed very gently against me. Peaceable Kingdom achieved. Minutes later? The phone.

It was the management company wanting to do an emergency fire inspection. This is no surprise. Last Spring the alarms all started going off when Squirrel showered if he forgot to turn on all the fans. I called, but nothing came of it and I did not want to press too hard as they might charge us for it instead of fixing it. We changed all the batteries and it happens less often, and it's yet another inconvenience we've had to learn to live with. Last Thursday it went off because I made pasta, even though the hood fan was on, which means the one right in front of my room with the brand new battery is now doing it too, in response to ordinary amounts of steam. Apparently every time the alarm goes off here to punish us for showering and cooking, it triggers something at the management company office. It's been getting way worse, so i bet it's happening all over my floor, the detector system all being the same age. Apparently the flashy lights went off so often this past week, they've decided to stop ignoring it.

So emergency fire inspection today, with a minimum one hour warning, but more likely in the afternoon. Somehow, the cats did not scatter despite the phone, and were still there when I was done warning Squirrel he had to clean his room for inspection Right Now. They did scatter in terror when he jiggled his dector to make sure it was properly seated after the last time he had to pull it when itwouldn't stop screaming about him taking a shower. Good bye peacable kigdom, hello hiding closet for cats. They called with a two hour afternoon window, which I went to inform Squirrel of. I cleaned the mess on the kitchen floor made by him taking out the garbage the night before. (This is fine and not a complaint. He does the carrying and lifting because I can't without seriously endangering myself. I clean because I'm the one notices what needs cleaning and knows how best to do it. I'm also the one with the list of cleaning supplies in my head and who knows what we have and what we need to buy next month. This division of labor is agreed on and very, very logical, being based on who is good at what. So again, not a complaint). I go back to bed and set the alarm so I will for sure be wearing trousers as they are like to hit us very early in the inspection window. I do get some crappy, interrupted sleep, and the beasts do eventually come back to the bed.

I get the clothes on and am lying there in the dusk of my room on an Autumn afternoon trying to decide if I should read or try to nap when they come. The Imperial Couple hides in the closet from the Strangers. Tavy will stay on the bed if the voices are familiar, but these were not voices he recognized, so from the perspective of the Cats, we were being Invaded by Cat Eating Trolls, some of them in Kitty Stomping Work Boots. *shudder*

I told them the saga of the smoke detectors. They decided they battery units need replacing, but the flashy light thing is probably fine, since it was getting triggered by the assholish detectors. They say they'll get back to me, likely with better warning. I went back to bed, talking in the comfort voice, so the cats would know it's over. Tavy came right out and got his pettin and went back to sleep in the leg mest. It took Livia several chapters to venture out for her pettin and her nap on the body pillow.

I missed forage of course, having opted for several hours of crappy sleep over getting dressed right then and going out. I had meant to go get meds, but I couldn't bear to disturb the beasts so soon. I did end up going for the library loop and to see if that case I ordered beginning of the month was ready to be picked up. It was not. Sigh.

I am worn thin like a tiny bit of butter on too much bread. The cats have mostly recovered from sirens and strangers, though there has been a degree of understandable extra cling. LM has been roaming the house between naps, cursing at kittens these days and soaking up short pettins. I suspect I will be low energy, but I will make an effort to address the latest firehouse of horror spewing out of D.C.
