"My fear now is that people are getting tired and worn out. I am a person who the very moment I’m on the threshold of arrival often feels like giving up or assumes I’m lost and checks the directions. I worry that people are fading out or growing defeatist as redemptive possibilities draw near. It is, after these thousand days that felt like a thousand years, sometimes hard to imagine a return to a moderately ethical administration headed by an intelligent, informed head of state who can read a multipage briefing statement and who won’t spew playground insults on social media. But impeachment proceedings are underway at last, and the betrayal of the Kurds seems to have peeled away some of the support of Republicans and even if the base is tripling down, a majority of Americans want the president impeached and removed, according to the latest Gallup poll. Whether the Trump era ends because we elect someone else in 2020 or because of impeachment or resignation to avoid impeachment a la Richard Nixon, the end is in sight. If we stick with it. We have 384 days to go until the next election, and what happens in those days is both utterly unpredictable and partly up to us."

I keep thinking about 45 being such a whiny little toddler that he decided it was better to watch TV in his hotel room than commemorate our War Dead.

I keep thinking about the horrible conditions in the WWI trenches, which I've seen a lot of footage of and read first hand accounts of and spent a lot of time imagining because WWI was terrible and important and it changed everything n devastated so many and people sort of forget it. It gets glossed over in History Classes in the US unless you take specialized courses in College. It matters to me for a bunch of personal reasons and because it has always seen more like our shitty forever wars that Republicans started for fun and profit and democrats hadn't the will to end, even though WWI was mud and the Forever Wars are desert. In both cases it is all so much more about the ego of old rich white people and not FOR anything that will actually improve anything.

I keep thinking about Valley Forge, which is, I know a very different War. I grew up near there and I've written a lot about what the place means to me and the way it twines with my family and my first 18 years on earth, so I'm not getting into that here. The thing I'm particularly thinking about was the time Skye went east with me for a Funeral. It was cold and late November or early December, and there was nearly horizontal freezing rain up on those ridges where they have the replica cabins looking down across fields with the lumps of old fortifications grown over with grass. We were freezing in our coats and wearing modern boots. We had slogged through mud to get there. My the end of the day we were wrung out with exhaustion and cold and hunger and we were wet above the knees from the freezing rain the Umbrellas did nothing to stop. I showed him those tiny, icy little cabins where they slept on these little shelves stacked like cord wood until it was time for sentry duty again. We pictured them with thin blankets at best, with feet wrapped in rags instead of boots, with nothing in their stomachs but flour and water pancakes and if they were lucky, some insects for protein. We imagined them hauling themselves out of those wracks to come stand on that ridge with slushy mud, or rain, or snow soaking through the foot rags to stand and pace in that frigid icy wind day after day after day. Standing there shivering, those long dead men were so much closer in a way that is hard to grasp from a textbook or a trip on a warm sunny day. It was a tiny bit easier to imagine what it cost them to stay and the determination or desperation that kept some of them to fleeing back home when so many others deserted.

All those soldiers over time: Those poor bastards who stuck out that shitty starving Valley Forge Winter. The mud and blood and mechanized Death of the Civil War. The poor bastards huddled in trenches with gas masks and flame throwers and old men in power ordering them over and over to die is suicidal charges because those old white men were too set in their ways to have learned a blessed thing from the Crimea or our Civil War. All those guys in chilly mud and snow or jungle heat with death raining down from above. All those wars we hardly ever talk about any more and the ones we endlessly do. All those soldiers coming home to find discrimination and lynch mobs. All those soldiers coming home with no support for the transition and no real help for the lingering effects. Various friends and relatives I've had trying to make lives again after their tours in one war or another and managing it or not.

All that grit and misery and perseverance and maiming and death.

And Captain Bonespurs cares so little about any of it that he won't visit our soldiers in the field or even our War Dead because it might inconvenience him slightly and he thinks sacrifice and duty to country are for suckers.

A commander of any kind, but especially a Commander in Chief ought to go see what conditions are like now and then, ought to meet the people who serve at his word, and to think long and hard bout the consequences of sending them. We should only ask them to risk the ultimate sacrifice for the most dire of reasons, not because invading France seems like fun to the Toddler in chief; we should honor those who made that sacrifice and their families instead of mocking and bulling and belittling them; we should keep our promises to those who served honorably be it health care or citizenship or GI bill, etc., not steal it all out of racism or to make the rich richer with yet another tax cut just for them; we should give the ones serving proper equipment and support; nd help them with whatever they need when they come back.

That is part of what Patriotism means to me; those things are all repudiated by the man in office and the Party he leads.

Our veterans, our soldiers serving, our dead, and their families all deserve better than this disgrace and open contempt.

* TW: Pedophilia. So there you have it, the Republican Mainstream in Alabama is so strongly pro-pedophilia that one of their reps is calling for the arrest and prosecution of the survivors of child molestation and the elevation of a pedophile to the United States Senate. "Alabama state representative says Moore's accusers are "guilty of allowing him to exist":" http://www.newsweek.com/alabama-state-rep-says-roy-moores-accusers-should-be-prosecuted-708125

"They are guilty of allowing him to exist for 40 years....Someone should prosecute and go after them." So the literal teenagers half his age or less were solely responsible for a grown man's decision to molest them, but by contrast the Pedophile deserves the honor and reward of being a United State's Senator.

Why do I say this is the mainstream of the Alabama Republican Party? Because multiple Republican officials are still endorsing and defending him on the grounds that pedophilia is a Christian value stretching all the way back to the virgin Mary, etc.. Because there are plenty of ordinary Republicans willing to defend him publicly over it. Because he’s successfully fundraising on it. If they aren’t pro-pedphilia, why the fuck would they do that? If it’s not mainstream, why are their so many of them and why do they put so many people with these odious views in charge? Why is 45 president if the Republican Party isn't enthusiastically pro sexual predator?

Go back and read the original claims. If a teacher did those things to students, trust me there would be no doubt that those things were illegal and the teacher would be locked up so fast the papers would be still settling on the desk. If a teacher did only the things Roy Moore has admitted to doing (supposedly consensual kissing), that teacher would be fired and license revoked even in states like Pennsylvania where the age of consent is ridiculously low. In my state, he’d have been arrested.

And I believe the women. All of them.

So much of it is flat out not funny anymore; not because of the references (which I am old enough to catch 99.9% of the time); but long strings of nasty, rambling, incredibly racist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, etc. remarks no longer constitute jokes outside of certain specific venues, such as Trump rallies and FOX "News." To me supporting the troops means only putting them in harms way when the cause is worthy and the mission clear. It means not starting random wars for no real reason except the ego of the President. It means giving them body armour, and well armored transports, and sufficient supplies. It means a good support system, access to quality medical and care when they come home, and real help adjusting and dealing with all the crap they have suffered in our name. It means psychiatric help where needed. It means fixing what needs fixing at the VA. It means prosecuting the people who rape their fellow soldiers instead of punishing the rape survivors as is the current policy. It means the GI Bill. It means excellent health benefits, job placement help, and COL increases for disabled vets and the families of our dead. It means not taking away the free medical care we promised them when they agreed to serve and kicking them out into the for profit insurance market as is the current Republican plan. It means fixing the wait times for health care and disability processing. It means considering every drop of blood valuable and every person who has served, will serve, and/or is serving now as people deserving of the best we can offer them in exchange for the sacrifices they make.

I think about WWI a lot on Veteran's Day. It's the war most people forget. It's the war that took my mother's Uncle Billy's leg and ruined his lungs. Such horrific carnage and sacrifice to no good purpose really. Rich old men of power sat far back from the lines and ordered wave after wave of young men to die horribly, and those men went. A generation of young men were ground to hamburger because the men making the decisions were using a hundred year old+ tactics in an era of machine guns, poison gas, and flame throwers.

People liken Iraq and Afghanistan to Vietnam, and I think of that too, but I also think of WWI. It seems like we've learned nothing from either one and I suspect we're going to learn nothing from these either. We send young women and men off to horror, and we still really can't say what it's for and the rich men in power begrudge the survivors every penny.

I honor those who've sacrificed, and at the same time I wish we'd stop demanding it frivolously and honor our debt to those who've served.

To me supporting the troops means only putting them in harms way when the cause is worthy and the mission clear. It means giving them body armour, and well armored transports, and sufficient supplies. It means a good support system, access to quality medical and care when they come home, and real help adjusting and dealing with all the crap they have suffered in our name. It means psychiatric help where needed.

Here we are remembering the service of our veterans, on the Eve of our third invasion of Iraq.

* Another storm moved in on the Philippines today, making it hard to get safe water, food, and temporary shelter in to places that need it. Projections at dinner time suggest that they should be able to bring more in tomorrow.

I am still trying to get my head around what it means for that many people to die suddenly in a place.

Yes, I keep posting the links. I'll likely repost them periodically for the next while as the scale of this is just so big.

* In last week's chaos, I forgot to congratulate the Indian Space Agency on their successful launch. I'm glad someone is still looking towards the future instead of doing everything to give up on science, technology, and educational infrastructure. Unfortunately, it sounds like there was an engine misfire. They are saying they can still get the probe to Mars with an additional thrust burst. *fingers crossed* on it turning out okay.

* I have been following the Yasser Arafat death investigation since the tests of the clothes last year. It sounds some that the findings are suggestive, but inconclusive. Given the sorts of questions that linger about the clothes tests, I have a whole bunch of questions I'd like to ask. Alas, I am not up on this area of science/medicine, so must rely on coverage that is contradictory and doesn't address my concerns. Basically, I am going to wait for more information before I express a strong opinion.

Yes, I'm posting this despite it's contradiction with the above, because I think we also need to remember living veterans, especially those that get forgotten, especially since Remembrance Day is more like our Memorial day, despite the dates being mis-matched.

* My day of rest got vetoed by phone calls. Sigh. The painting is very close to done. My instinct that Snugglepus Purple and Dancing Blue were the "right" colors was correct. The apartment looks like I imagined it, rather than my lower expectation of how it would actually look. The colours are bright, bold, friendly, and cheerful without being too dark or light or too intense. When the bedroom doors are open, the blue looks brilliant with the purple in the common areas. I'm leaving the bathrooms, closets, and two of the ceilings as is. This isn't ideal, but they are good enough. My ceiling turned out to be just primer, so we are painting it blue with the left over paint. He still had the delicate work, sundries, and touch ups to do, but I'm really happy with it. The place was so depressing with the nasty carpets and ugly walls. Now I'm happy just thinking about the walls. I can't wait to see it with the new floors. I've got most of the unpacking done, with a few things needing sorting left, which I should finish by bed time.

Tomorrow I have the Doctor, errands, paying off the painter, and setting up the floor guys for Wednesday. Wednesday I have a trans education thing I'm hoping to help with (Representing the non-binary if there are questions. Then there is letting in the painters and, and.... Yeah. So real sleep maybe Thursday?
