* Wednesday, I gave myself food poisoning. I'm pretty sure how, and it shouldn't be a problem going forward.

Thursday: I woke to find someone had horked up a hairball on the bed, so I had to change sheets before proceeding.

I ended up muddy and soaked armpit to crotch from moving the 30 Gallon. I made a mess of the floors, which needed cleaning after and smashed a couple toes bringing in a chair from the patio. One of the toes is swollen and impressively bruised and hurts a lot, but doesn't feel broken as it was a more robust toe rather than the fragile one. It's done, and Livia has forgiven me enough to come watch Fish TV from the safety chair.

Fish corner: https://gwydionmisha.tumblr.com/post/619436257353908224/fish-corner-is-now-officially-a-thing-yes-the-20

I still have a massive amount of cleaning and sorting to do and the usual anal retentive fussing about. I still need to decide what to do about the altar stuff, still in boxes. I am seriously considering removing the table in the office the 30 was on with shelving in a couple of years when it's safe for me to go out and visit used furniture stores, but there's a lot of time to think about it and for now having somewhere to stack bits and bobs displaced by the project and the library things I can't return is valuable in itself.

So not over, but all the urgent things are done.

I did not even sit down to sort med trays until after 1AM, so you can imagine how productive I'm being.

“The decision by Andrew Wheeler, the administrator of the E.P.A., appears to defy a court order that required the agency to establish a safe drinking-water standard for the chemical by the end of June. The policy, which acknowledges that exposure to high levels of perchlorate can cause I.Q. damage but opts nevertheless not to limit it, could also set a precedent for the regulation of other chemicals, people familiar with the matter said. “

Republicans are arguing that preventing fetal brain damage is not in the Public interest, but causing it definitely is.

* The Breonna Taylor murder sure looks premeditated to me. They had no evidence that the EMT had done anything illegal at all so they lied to get a no knock warrant for a search for a suspect they knew wasn't there so they could have the fun of violently breaking into the apartment in the middle of the night to spray it with bullets, murdering her and endangering people including a sleeping child in a neighboring apartment whom they narrowly missed murdering, then lied to the police about what happened in statements that contradicted multiple eye witness reports. Then instead of arresting the police assassins for the multiple felonies they commuted they arrested the victim's partner for standing his ground against people breaking into his apartment to murder them. They also grilled the victims mother in a way that suggested they were trying to pin the clearly premeditated police assassination of her daughter on the innocent partner.

* Thursday: The car started again, so that's two days keeping a charge. I came back to deal with a collection of arrivals which required me to finally start the livingroom furniture move I've been dreading. The issue is that I want one of the benches where the fish stand is, bbut to do that I need to move the tank onto a bench (a two person job and it's squirrel's game night so no chance of help at all. i moved small furniture so I could move the squirrel's wall bench which involved moving all the under bench storage so I could move the under window bench into the corner against the front wall which involved space the other bench needed to fit. i put a living room chair and my office chair temporarily against the window which sort of fucks up cat access to the window, though Tavy's found a way.

Some friends had ordered a new office chair they needed for working from home using stimulus check, only when it arrived it was the wrong chair and returning it was a hassle to I'm trying it out tonight in my office. I may end up switching the chairs back because this one, while brand new, more stable, lighter, and hardier isn't as well padded, but we'll see how it does with wheelchair cushions.

Another friend had mailed me three glorious tomato starts, hence the urgancy to get the new chair off the porch, because no way could I reach the bit of the garden these starts needed to go to get the best sun access without me making space in the living room for an extra chair, hence the tetris.

I used all the spoons, bruised a cheekbone, got mauled by an over excited Tavy who launched himself at me in his excitement, and am in extra pain, but it needed doing and now is half way done, even if it's not sustainable without moving the tank.

* Friday: I needed to get a few things done first, so Squirrel and I agreed he'd go get some sleep and we'd move the twenty tank when he got up. Which turned out to be very early Saturday morning. Moving an inhabited tank is a nightmare process, but better than moving the fish into a back up tank. All the equipment needs unplugging and putting somewhere safe. All the fish furniture which is saturated and muddy, need to be put somewhere they won't get contaminated or ruin anything. As much water as possible needs to me removed as possible without removing any fish and with as little loss of life as possible. It's still a shock to them, but less stress than chasing them around and inevitably missing some or stressing them so much they don't make it. My experience is I lose fewer fry and bottom feeders this way. It is also less work, but still a lot of work and exhausted. Inhabited tanks are heavy.

We got it over there and I gave it a good cleaning, refilled it and put it back together. Phase two complete. Tomorrow's plan involves a lot of futzing. I may have to excavate the spare living room lamp from the closet where it went during the Great renovation, which is a project in itself, as I fear this lamp may be Done. We'll see.

* Saturday: I am covered in Spider bits and dust, but I am vindicated in my belief that the furniture all fit in this configuration. (Squirrel kept asking if I was sure I'd measured right and would things really fit. Ha! I am really good at furniture tetris.) Of course it involved moving the chairs and the stuff stored under benches out, recleaning the floors, moving the stand, putting storage into the stand cabinet which I can now access, cleaning the floor again, moving the bench, cleaning the floor yet again, then putting the chairs and things back. I switched lamps, which involved digging it out of the closet, but I was tired of fussing with the glitchy one and this one is taller and thus better suited, if not nearly as pretty. Next I need to do more measuring and switch pictures around again. Phase five involves the nightmare of moving the Big Tank out of the office, which is going to be a major fucking issue.

However, as of tonight, the living room is in a way more functional configuration than we've ever had in this place. It would be better if it was bigger, but really getting the broken fireplace out of the corner is a massive fucking improvement. This configuration means that after there's a vaccine, I won't be doing a used furniture scavenger hunt for a large bookcase as I'd hoped, but when the time comes, I'm going to take measurements and see if I can't find a tall skinny one in the right dimensions or a suitable equivalent. I really do need more shelving, even with selling off a third of the collection last move. I may get rid of a chair. Well see how I feel once I've had time to live with this.

In Livia news, by Friday she'd worked out how to access her windowsill, and y bed time she'd decided to forgo the usual two weeks of observation for any new object before interacting with it, and sat on the new chair. She likes it! She likes the familiar chairs better, of course. Familiar things are always better than new ones, but it is nap worthy and defensible. Both of the Imperials have tried out the window sill bench now that I've put it back and they are pleased with this development despite their real distress at a third evening of furniture moving. Livia's tumm seems better today and she ate all her meat. Elder Kitty was latte for dinner, but I saved it for her. Livia was rather put out that other girl was getting dinner when she wasn't, but she was consoled for the loss of a hoped for Second dinner with a treat treasure hunt on my desk, so we are calling it a win.

Update: Livia spent most of the evening on her safety chair watching fish TV between naps. Someone finally put her fish TV back almost where it was only better!

Want witnesses and testimony at the impeachment? Want press access and fully televised hearings? Don't hold your breath, but if you have a moderate and/or vulnerable Republican senator now might be a good time to express your opinion.

* Friday: I had no choice but to go out today, as the extra documentation they wanted for my Medicaid had to go in. The medicaid covers most of the Medicare payments, so I can't fuck around even though it was three silly bits of paper, two of them lteral ATM slips that i copied ion the same sheet when I got there.

Extra challenges were: 1. Extreme insomnia meaning that I could not get to sleep and every time I started to drift off something woke me: That lady calling with a wrong number like she does about once a month. Tavy aggressively biscuit making on my ribs with sharp claws. That sort of thing. A collection of discomforts that I only managed to finally get to bearable levels an hour before the alarm so that i managed a 10-15 minute nap at best instead of real sleep. 2. The extreme pain situation that is making walking and standing nightmarish. 3. The snow. Lckily Squirrel was correct that the hardest part was getting to the car and out onto the street. Bonus, I had to basically shovel three inches of hardened snow off my windshield and my passenger side wiper broke while it was parked there for a week and also I didn't discover the neighbor car had smacked my passenger rear view in a way that required manual realignment until I was literally on the highway.

Most of the roads were fine, but the ones that weren't really really weren't. The road in front of forage was dangerous enough that when I realized that there was no parking on that street and the sidewalks were nearly impassable for me, I didn't circle and wait, as he whole my tires lost purchase twice and I nearly got trapped in the snow at a stop sign. It was too dangerous to risk it again. I did library and picked up the one med I ran out of at the pharmacy, drove north to hand in my bits of paper, then stopped to pick up Kaiser rolls, TP, and litter. I knew I was in trouble less than a minute after entering the store as the other issue with my arms, neck, and shoulders was making it hard to push the cart empty and my foot was already screaming from the line to turn in the papers.

When I got home, someone had helpfully stolen our reserved belongs to us exclusively parking spot. Luckily, for the first time in literally months, the disabled spot in front of our building was open. This was ideal as the sport bit of pavement to the door was navigable and the sidewalks on the blocks in front of our apartment are too icy and even the small slope at the bottom of the drive would mean I'd have had to crawl through the snow because no way could i safely walk it.

I'm at the having trouble walking to the bathroom point here and am going to bed early.

Tavy's goon three days with the box off the sofa and him not peeing on furniture. Let us hope the trend continues.

I am concerned because her appetite seems low the last 3-4 days, I haven't seen or heard her playing, and she hasn't been hanging out on her window sill in the evening. She is cuddly and she's definitely using the litter box, but still.... Let's hope it's just the cold weather and her avoiding other cat drama.

* Saturday: Friday's activities really messed me up. Everything that was getting better is back to terrible again. My friend postponed the furniture moving until tomorrow, which is likely for the best, given my condition. The Imperial couple and I went back to bed and i kept doing that thing where I'd read a page or two of Carmilla, then go back to sleep, over and over. I did eventually strip the bed and start the washer.

When I came out I found massive die off in the office tank, literally since yesterday. I did a big water change and the water was the wrong colour. I have a lot of concerns and suspicions. Al the younger fish are dead. I'm going to do what I can to save the ones left, but I'm not hopeful.

In cat news: Good girl Livia ate most of her special girl goosh this evening, but Tavy is now insisting that the new kibbles aren't really food.

In Renovation News: the nice contractor helped me find everything but the tub. It turned out there was literally one choice of toilet in the stores we were to choose from that fit the criteria. Now to get things moved and cleaned and ready for Wednesday, plus the tub field trip somehow, despite how hard standing is right now.

Wee Hours Fish update: I've been able to count 13 live fish visible at once. Odds are there are some hiding. I'm pretty sure one of them which looked really ill earlier and now seems a lot better. I haven't seen any new bodies. *crosses fingers*

* "Why People Are Protesting in India:" https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/17/world/asia/india-protests-citizenship-muslims.html

"All 33 million residents of Assam, a state bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh, had to provide documentary evidence, such as a property deed or a birth certificate, showing that they or their ancestors lived in India before 1971. Those who could not would be declared foreign migrants, at risk of being sent to huge new detention camps.

More than two million people, many of them Muslims, failed to pass the test and could end up stateless. The governing party of Mr. Modi has vowed to extend the test to other parts of India.

The government has said the test was intended to root out undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh. India’s home minister, Amit Shah, has repeatedly referred to these migrants as “termites.”"

* The Refrigerator is officially fixed. It really was a very easy repair of yu have the right toolsand know what you're doing. It was absolutely nothing I could fix myself. It turns out Rubbermaid makes a kick ass cooler. As in, the large baby sized ice block I had put in the bottom was barely even a tiny bit melted and most of the loose ice stayed intact. It did fit in the storage unit with the small borrowed cooler inside. Like, all the perishables made it through from Friday to Sunday. I lost half my food at least in the initial emergency, but nothing over the weekend. It's nice and cool/cold and the ice maker is happily making ice.

I did my Solstice thing, but was too tired after to even touch a computer, hence Sunday being all preprogrammed stuff on tumblr and it being crickets on Dreamwidth. I am till finding things and returning them to their proper homes, as the table clearing had to be hasty.

The great fish migration is going to be next Saturday. *crosses fingers* I spotted a live whiptail in the by the door twenty and those are the worst to catch and transport. Current plan is to migrate the other twenty across to the thirty and what until I hear from the contractor in January to see if I actually have to move the door twenty at all. If I do, they will join their comrades in the office thirty. If not, after the renovation I'll move the tank with fish inside across the living room and put the thirty back on it's pedestal in the living room where the door twenty currently is.

Today I went out to do forage, library and pick up a few replacements for things that died in the fridge last week. It was a good forage in a lot of ways (pistachios!), but was light on bread and fresh veg. Then I went through a stack of yet more phone bureaucracy. They are not cancelling my medicaid, it turns out, but the COLA on Social security starting January was just enough to push everyone on Social Security out of the Categorically needy program into the Medically needy program, which despite the you are going to lose some benefits wording is essentially the same according to the Health and Human Services guy. I have not started the end of year bureaucracy packet, which came last Friday, but a lot of Friday's phone bureaucracy was me calling around to get people to mail me the documentation I need to do the packet. Obviously, none of that is here yet. The weekend ate all the spoons, and I'm wiped today from errands. Hopefully, I'll get my shit to do the parts I can manage with the paperwork I have in the next three days, and fill in the bits that need documents when they turn up. Then I laboriously put forage away. Squirrel emptied the dishwasher yesterday, so there was room for me to reload it. Which meant exhausting and painful prewashing. I still have one side of the sink worth of prewashed things ready for the next load. Sigh.

I still have a lot of last week's news to chew through on top of toy's stuff. My hope is, I'll have a chance to catch up this week.

* I want to thank all of my readers. no really, y'all make me feel less like a voice crying in the wilderness or Cassandra speaking prophecy to those who don't listen.

I especially want to thank those of you who helped keep Livia kitten alive through her medical crisis. Seriously, she would have died without you all coing together to pay her vet bills and get her the food she needed/s to stay alive. She seems to be doing really well on limited ingredient shreds and odds are I'll be getting normal limited ingredient turkey based grain free kibbles and try transitioning her off the prescription kibbles in January once I'm in funds again. She likes the shreds so much she looks forward to them every day, milling around excitedly when she thinks I'm making them and giving one small worried squeak if I'm too slow. I make the sounds that means it's coming and she is reassured. Elder kitty thinks the shreds are the best food ever, and I think they are helping her digestion. Elder Kitty is doing so well, it like the clock has turned back to when her cohort clowder were alive. she's still frail, but she's eating better, has taken back all her common area nap spots and seems to have mostly recovered from her long depression.

I also wanted to give a special thanks to everyone who helped keep the car, dishwasher, and refrigerator running. You are all super stars.

* TW: Pet illness/death. I am not generally sentimental about platys. They are not bright enough to have personalities. They are basically swimming reproductive systems. The cats and I enjoy watching them swim about and they are very cheap since if one has sufficient elogia, they expand in numbers to fill the available space. I don't bother to name them, as there are frequently hundreds in a given year. They die of all sorts of things. I have fish medicine for tank wide emergencies, but these aren't like bettas where one can reasonably do something if something not obviously fatal happens to one and they have personalities and they can live 5-7 years if you take good care of them. Platys die. Still, one occasionally stands out. There was a male I had for five years with a congenital defect I used to root for and who survived a move and a number of tank evictions.

The oldest of my platys is a big blue female. About a month and a half ago, I thought I was going to lose her to birth complications. They are pretty much constantly pregnant and sometimes things go wrong. A tube gets blocked or the like, and they are too small and fragile to help. I noticed something had gone terribly wrong with a birthing and the fry was stuck. she kept swimming and eating but the whole situation looked hideous from behind. I assumed that was it for her, as the situation continued to drag on. About a week and half after I first noticed the problem during feeding, it seemed to have solved itself rather miraculously. I was pleased she'd made it. Then this month I spotted a touch of fungus on her head. On further inspection I found a spot on one of the boy's tails. We're down to one 20 filter, which is on the other 20. I do frequent changes, but it happens. I suspect now they were the ones who infected the bathroom colony as I'd done a restock from that tank about a month before they came down with the fungus, but it moved faster in the smaller tank. The thing is, the infected twenty had a ton of young fry in it, the ladies having been particularly prolific, but there was nothingg for it. The fungus medicine is strong and fish, particularly fry die of it, but fungus will take a whole tank, so I dosed them twice. (One waits for days between dosing). I haven't seen any adult bodies, but I am pretty sure most of the fry died and were eaten. I've seen some larger fry since the second dose, but not many.

The visible fungus is gone, the largest female is eating and swimming well, and today i started changing out the medicine water. If the medicine hasn't killed them (I won't know for another week or so), then the colony will survive.

I am sad to lose all those fry, but the colony is what matters in the end.

* Yesterday was incredibly frustrating with lots of reboots and general computer fuckery and me having to constantly get up to solve problems around the apartment. I did finally achieve stability and was getting real work done, when Tavy ran over and flopped onto the keyboard before I could stop him, turning it off. I extracted him from the lap top and went off to try to salvage a light bulb from a dead fish light in hopes the light was dead for electricals and the bulb was good (fish grow lights are very expensive), as one of the bulbs went out on the twenty that both twenty tanks are now sharing. I usually get the fish store guys to do the big lights as it's tools and tiny fiddly bits that my hands can't really do properly anymore. Extracting the bulb from the dead light was reasonably easy as I own screwdrivers, and I trapped all the small parts in the body of the light just in case. I start to take the second light apart and the fixture flew apart when I loosened the second screw with an alarming ting. Like all of it came apart and not just the bit I wanted, because of course. I can't examine the assembled fixture properly as doing so might endanger a light I knew worked and couldn't afford to loose. I did manage to proof of concept well enough to prove the bulb was still good, but I could not for the life of me get it to match and the thing wasn't stable. Then I realized... missing part. no sign of the thing anywhere. I take the equivalent missing bit from the dead light, construct a prop, start to put it together, discover the screw driver also missing. Because of course. Also, Tavy keeps trying to help. because small loose fiddly bits are his favorite toys. I finger tighten and figure I'll improvise with scissors as they are closer to the right size for the philips head later. I get it assembled and test. Light works as is so bright and beautiful. (Yes, you are supposed to replace both bulbs at once, but unless you are buying me a big ass aquabulb, don't complain.) I take the sofa apart and find the screw driver, tighten, secure and close. It took an hour and a half what with all the help and missing things. The missing piece turned out to be literally under the light, which I discover when I put it back. Fun. next on the list it seeing if I can get one working light out of the 30 light Tavy toasted and a dead supplemental. These, of course are a different shape bulb with different fixtures. Sigh. Not tonight.

* So it turns out that if you email Tom's of Maine to ask them specific questions about their toothpaste, they call you up and talk to you about toothpaste preferences, and they mail you a free full sized tube to try!

I adored Tom's of Maine as they made non-mint flavours, but I was warned off by my Dentist in the mid-90's because of my genetically fragile teeth. (Not a problem for normal people, and said friend says their toothpaste is smooth instead of gritty, so they may have entirely changed formulations in the intervening two decades.) I was advising a friend recently and discovered they'd dramatically expanded their product line and contacted them on the off. I'll test out the taste and texture and see how it goes, since I'd love to be able to switch back. I hate Colgate and Sensadyne flavourwise, and I react badly to peppermint because of my sensory difference. (Spearmint and Wintergreen are fine, but most other mints not so much).

I admit to hoping they might send me a small travel sized tube for testing, I was not expecting a full sized one. Good on you Tom's of Maine. I adore your deodorant, and your mouthwash is entirely inoffensive and does not send me into sensory overload. I am so hoping the propolis and myrrh is safe and pleasant. I'm not a fan of myrrh as a scent, but I admit to curiousity. My hope is if the texture is right and the flavour wrong, I might try the children's flavours. Anyway, fingers crossed.

In other mint news, they had discontinued my tummy tea, hence my inability to find it since I started looking 'round the turn of the year. I was forced to search out a new brand with May's food allotment. I tested it on a queasiness mid-month, and turns out that Numi Moroccan Mint is "sweet spearmint" like as promised, richly flavoured and inoffensive, butter tasting than the old brand.

* There was a last minute bidding flurry, for which I am grateful, but the most valuable thing on there went for about half of what it would have made if I'd waited until Fall. Sigh. The bill I floated last month got paid this afternoon out of my government money. I can for sure pay the bill coming due end of next week. I am suspecting I haven't enough for 2nd bill when it hits mid month, but I won't know how short I am until we get there. Clearly I am not getting paper towels this month as I'd hoped and I may have to do another auction. Which means picking sacrifices. Worse, I may do an imp lot which is waaaaay harder without Main computer's database, but the immediate emergency is solved.

* I need to say something about the conversation around how to protest the proposed unconstitutional Muslim registry. I love the idea of people who are not Muslim registering. I love the idea of so many people registering that the list becomes meaningless. It is a good tactic and a brave tactic. It is incredibly valiant that so many Jews have stood up and said they would register. You know what's not okay though? Demanding Jews or Native Americans or trans people or black people or members of other groups that are the most in danger under a Neo-NAZi fascist regime register, which is something I'm seeing a lot of right now. There is a difference between volunteering and being pressured into it, most especially for people being directly targeted or likely to be targeted by Trump/Pence. For us, it needs to be an individual decision and no one is entitled to our sacrifice against our will. Yes, I'm thinking about it, just as I did when they were talking about re-instituting McCarthy era loyalty oaths for teachers after 9/11. (I decided then that I was okay losing my job over it, though it never came to it. I also decided to edit the pledge of allegiance for my self as I was required to say it every morning all eight years I taught. I went with "I pledge allegiance to the United States of America, and to the Republic, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Most people didn't notice, though I'd spot the occasional kid catching me at it. Not one ever asked, though they did look thoughtful.). I am leaning towards it, but I am not comfortable with lying or denying my own beliefs in any context, so it's hard for me, and I do not know if I will be able to deny my beliefs even on paper if it comes to the point. I am giving myself a little time to live with it, and there is time to decide. Given the literal years I suffered for the truth in some pretty horrible ways, I physically revolt when required to lie out of character. (I can be wrong. I often am, alas. I can misstate by accident, and even that makes me queasy and I have to explain immediately I notice it what I actually meant. I can deflect. I can stay tangential true things. I can say true things in a misleading way. I can act and say things that are not true while in character, but even on the rare occasions I want to lie in even the most trivial way, IE: So and so isn't home when they are, it's... not possible. It's very much a trauma thing, and not one I particularly mind in every day life, so not one I've bothered trying to take apart, they way I have with a whole host of triggers and behaviors specific to most of a decade of abuse. "Can't lie" sounds a trivial thing to get over, but it's really not, because it's a core identity trait thing. I think I've thought of a way around it depending on how the registry is done, but I literally can't guarantee that I can bring myself to do it, because I have choked before.

In any case, you know who should be the first people lining up to register? Straight white cisgendered able bodied Christians, because it's you folks who decided to do these terrible things in cold blood, knowing full well the sorts of things likely to result. If you didn't vote for him, odds are your friends or family or coworkers voted to literally kill as many of us as possible. This is very clearly a white people problem, and the people who are least in danger even if they put their names on a Muslim registry are the straight white cisgendered able bodied Christians. So you get in line first, and don't be hassling people who are liable to be on the front lines one way or another as we all individually make our decisions. I suspect a lot of us will sign up if it comes to it.

I hope I will, but bravery before the fact counts for nothing. I do the safety pin because that is exactly the sort of bravery I have. I do have a long ass history of confronting harassers in public. I do have a history of standing with someone being hassled and standing up to the harasser. I do have a history of physically interposing myself between a group of big scary threatening white men and someone they are trying to intimidate. I do have a history of giving no fucks if I get hurt. I can make the promise to keep doing that because a few decades of doing that under my own power including twice in the last few months tells me it is something I can do. I have no idea what I'll in the end be able to break or bend something integral to who I am even though I absolutely believe it is the right thing to do. I can't tell you if I can do it until it is done.

In the mean time though, go ahead and pressure the fuck out of the folks with the most privilege, but can we stop being jerks in particular to Jews and trans folk and people of colour and people with serious mental and physical disabilities, etc. who are already under massive stress and possibly deadly threat from the incoming regime? Because it's not helping. Not every one can do all the things. It's like I said in my post election things about dividing up the work that needs to be done to resist: we need to divide things up according to our strengths, and have a realistic idea of what we can handle. A lot of people with disabilities can't do marching and shaming us because of our hard limits is a serious asshole maneuver. Demanding someone with social anxiety to do the safety pin thing is flat out cruel. Demanding trans people, particularly trans people of colour, take on even more risk on top of the danger of just existing while trans... yeah. Demanding Jews get in line first for the Muslim registries... yeah. You see what I mean. It is incredibly powerful when people DO volunteer, but there is volunteering and there is pushed. Let's try to be mindful of other people's limits and other people's risk. I know it's hard, especially when we are all scared we will literally be killed, but turning on each other isn't the answer. We DO need to stick together and support each other, and part of that is empathy.

* Tavy only discovered the whole sitting on his human during lung time for pets and/or naps in the last month. He has already decided he likes it so much that he gets rather grumpy when I am on the sofa for any other reason (such as food or paperwork) and will poke at me in hopes that I will hurry up and do my lung treatment. When foiled, he crouches next to me and glares.

In other news: the office colony is now eating and behaving normally, so I have hopes of them surviving.

* The VVitch: This film is stunning. Visually, it just blows me away, from the painterly use of lighting and composition of so many shots; to the bleak, spare period accurate design; to the details of belts and stitching in the costume design. It is clear that everyone involved really cared about making this look as Right and period accurate as they possibly could and it really shows. The people making this clearly made it with both love and precision and it shows. This is likely as close as anyone can really get on film to that specific place and time. (The film maker owns up to a few things like the house being a bit too large, too many candles, and the goats being the wrong species in the extras and explains exactly why those changes were necessary. The fact that he is apologizing for not importing wild goats from New Zealand tells you how deep the research is and how hard he thought about the tiny handful of compromises he had to make in response to the reality of filming. Seriously, I may be in love. I want to see him make more films this way). I wish I'd had a chance to see it on the big screen, but even on the small it is gorgeous.

This doesn't even touch how alarmingly good the acting is, all realism and nuance in the quieter scenes, the excellent accent work, and the way they managed to shoot something this good with goats and child actors, both notoriously difficult, and them having to hide implications and subtext from the three younger cast members. One of the real strengths of the film is the willingness to allow silence and stillness and the slower pace of the character building scenes take the time they need to, to let the actors take the time they need to, in a way that fit the spare nature of the setting. Anya Taylor-Joy brought a beautiful complexity and ambiguity to Thomasin. Ralph Ineson's William is conveys so much in face and tone and stillness.
Kate Dickie brings to Catherine a naturalistic intensity that ratchets up and things unravel punctuated by moments of tenderness. I wish she'd been allowed to be this good as Lysa Arryn, but that script was nowhere close to this good.

Which brings us to the story itself. I love that the script plays fair with the religion and folk beliefs of the period. It doesn't trivialize what the characters think and feel. It doesn't try to modernize or lampshade the grimness of that particularly type of period Calvinism, nor does it dumb it down. The intellectual weight and the intensity of emotion were all pitch perfect. I kept thinking about Sarah Vowell's wordy Shipmates and both the seriousness of the theological arguments and the way those banishings were often a sort of passive death sentence. I like too that I could pick out the exact period accurate folkloric traditions the film was using. Look, I'm firmly in the Salem witches were innocent camp, but that doesn't stop me from recognizing the power of the archetype or the sincerity of period belief. I'd rather if someone makes a supernatural witch movie, they go with period accurate beliefs. It's a huge fucking problem with medieval witch movies too (I'm looking at you, Nicholas Cage).

I love the language of this movie as well, which in those accents range correct and natural in my ears. According to the extras, they lifted and modified a lot of it out of period sources, and it shows. The result is plain and poetic by turns as required and I was never once pulled out by it sounding wooden or odd.

It's politics fascinate me as well, but that needs more mulling. There are parts of this that are hard to watch, but it is utterly mesmerizing and worth chewing over at length.

* Sometimes I like to imagine Henry VI of England, Charles VI of France, Charles II of Spain, and Louis XVI of France living in a large rambling cottage in the country somewhere with someone to look after the cooking. They would each have their own room and space for their interests. Henry could herd a small flock of sheep and Louis could make keys. Every one would be careful not to touch Charles VI, and the cook could make soft foods for Charles II. Everyone would be kind to each other and none of them would be asked to deal with things like war and politics and they would be so much happier than they were in life.

Henry VI in particular just breaks my heart every damned time.

The Greeks, who pinged them last report they swerved ninety degrees without warning then dropped sudenly before falling off radar. The French and Egyptians will most likely be taking lead on the investigation for obvious reasons. There is a lot of speculation, but as always in these cases, I'm sticking to what is known. I won't have a good idea of the survival rate until tomorrow. I also dealt with taxes (fingers crossed that the money turns up in my account before they try to cash my check. Check was in the drop box at office close. Money should turn up either tomorrow or Monday. I know, I know). I also cleaned the monster tank mostly. Greenwick should help me finish that, moving the back up twenty, and miscellaneous tank cleaning on what are now back up tanks. I'm to bath and bed.

* So Wednesday I pretty much spent all evening doing up ebays, which just became super important as today I discovered that there is forty dollars less than there out to be in my bank account so now it's not just dish detergent and cat food it needs to pay for, but also car insurance. I got three minimum bids right away on the partial lots, so I have hopes of covering car insurance. *fingers crossed for cat food and dish detergent*

Today I spotted live fish in the back up twenty, clearly fry that hitched a ride in the plants during the great tank crisis. This made the fish heater crisis critical. I had exactly enough left on my credit card to buy a betta tank heater, so I could yank the heater that was too big for a betta tank but the only one I had for the back up twenty and there is now a good small heater in Niran's tank. I managed to scavenge enough bulbs and old lighting from smaller tanks to cover the two key tanks, one of which was not doing well with only a betta light since I set it up during the tank emergency (The plant health was suffering which was cutting down on the fry survival rate), and the office tank that had a bulb burn out. This is a huge help. Niran betta fish doesn't have his own light, as I hadn't enough working bulbs, but he's been sharing with the back up twenty anyway for weeks with no problems. It freaksme out that we haven't any back ups at all and that I'm having to use an extra betta light on the office tank since I was short a 20 watt aquatic, but everyone is now getting what looks like enough light. The two tall twenties (and Niran Betta Fish) are still sharing lights because I can't afford bulbs, but that is a bearable situation for me and them. I still need to catch more fish from the office to put in the livingroom splinter colonies to go with the volunteer fry there. I still need to save up for some more cheap fish so the live bearer colonies don't get too inbred, and restart the corys as there are hardly any left, and somehow come up for money for bulbs for the back up twenty's light, an office bulb, and a back up each of the 10, 15, and 20's, but I don't see the lighting crisis getting solved this year, but it's nice to dream.

I am still not sure where I am getting Property tax money from by the end of the month, after all.

Still, surprise window platys colony! It is so exciting to see the fish mostly thriving despite adversity.

Also, I blew all my remaining EBT today on lettuce and tomato starts, since they are mostly doing small stuff out there that hopefully won't ruin anymore of my containers. I still need replacements for two of the larger containers construction workers smashed, but I had space for this batch of starts and room for at least one of the other two things I want to plant later in the season when there is EBT to spend again. The lilies are in the bushy greens phase, so I've hopes for nice flowers. Strawberries and sage survived "winter" and the rosemary looks to be making a comeback from the construction based near death experience. I'd still like to add basil and spinach particularly next month. I'd love to try to get asparagus to take hold next year, but it's too late now and I really need a replacement largest sized container to even contemplate trying it. It is a huge comfort to have things growing out there despite the massive damage. I can not wait until I can start culling lettuce for sandwiches. I still have hopes of seeds sprouting, though no sign of it yet.

Anyway, we've now recorded two topics for the podcast with the third outlined for next time. We are now suspecting the topics are going to be two parters, but we won't know for sure until after Editing. The third topic really needs to be a two parter if not three, I'm thinking. I really want four or five topics banked (at least three edited) before posting because of my always fragile health and things like deadlines and illnesses that could happen to the other two. I hate missing deadlines myself and if we are really posting these every two weeks, I will be endlessly unnerved if there isn't a solid cushion. I've got nine more topics solidly on the list and am doing refresher reading in prep for them and some others I've got in mind.

* I meant to do something for Trans day of Visibility, but my body's been extra difficult the last two weeks or so, so it didn't happen. I am still not in any shape for eloquence, so I will just say: Yes, I am here. I am a transitioned androgyne (Ze,Zir,zim). Yes, that really is a thing, and no, it's not a phase. I was aware of my gender difference from about the age of three, long before I had a word for it and picked the androgyne label as the closest fit in my teens at some point in the mid 80's.

I'll also add that I do answer questions and I generally don't mind talking about it, though obviously questions about my personal equipment are only for friends. The gatekeeper system is an unnecessary hassle for all of us, in my opinion, but it's extra scary for non-binary folks, but it is possible to navigate it without lying and on the cheap if you live in the Pacific Northwest. If you are trans of any stripe and local to Western Washington, looking for advice on getting through the system with a minimum of misery and expense, feel free to drop me a line. I feel like the earlier generations went through so much and fought so hard and were there with advice for those who came after and that debt ought to be paid forward. For non-binary folk coming up, there isn't nearly as much appropriate advice, and those of us who've been through it mostly had to do a lot of the figuring out who to go to and what to do ourselves when the binary folk advice wasn't helpful or where a resource was excellent for one sort of trans person, but hostile or out right closed to other sorts. Trans world still often runs by word of mouth and if there is anything I can do to make it easier for the folks coming after me, I'm happy to do it or point you towards resources that can help.

* Fish Update: I started a splinter colony for the guppies in the long 20 as I am down to very few corys because of all the drama this year. Let's hope some of the corys are female and pregnant as there is no way to afford a restock for the foreseeable future. Anyway, the guppies've been in there most of a week and seem happy enough.

We’ve had a bit of fry die off in the splinter colony, but that was expected as there is half the space and less vegetation. There are still plenty of mixed sized fry and a couple of the oldest will likely mature soon, judging by size. I think the colony will be fine, though I’d feel better if I could add a bit of genetic diversity.

The Pleco is doing well despite the smaller digs. Both whiptails seem to have survived the drama, and the beta I moved seems happier out here where there is a bit more stimulation.

* I am not a sitcom person and it takes a lot to win me over. I gave in and tried Brooklyn 99, and I have been completely won over despite the annoying straight white man baby that is seemingly obligatory in the genre these days. I love the Captain, Terry, and Rosa best, but is surprisingly good at giving all of the main cast except Hitchcock and Scully some depth. I love that they have actual competent characters and solve crimes instead of everyone just being wacky, which is my issue with a lot of sitcoms. I love that I can already see character arcs and growth and I'm still just working my way through season one. The tendency of sitcoms to reset at the beginning of each episode irritates and creeps me out. I love that there is actual continuity. (Ex: One episode, they make the Fairytale Castle. In another it is in the background of a scene at Terry's House). It's not perfect, but this is the most fun I've had with a sitcom in ages. Now to figure out what day, time, and channel it is on so I can maybe start taping it. Thanks to all of you who recommended it without pushing to hard and to the folks posting intriguing gifsets that helped real me in.

* Fish update: I got the leak down to a slow drip, but that's not good enough. It would get worse quickly. So that's it for the 30 gallon. Really, I needed someone to help me for the next bit, but there was no one to do it but me. The splinter colony adults and a surprisingly large contingent of fry were still alive and transfer was their only hope. I moved a betta tank over by the long 20, then prepped the... I'm thinking it's a fifteen. I moved a bunch of the dirt and started bailing water into it. I transferred the adults and made a best effort at the fry, though they are small and it's hard to tell how many made it. I nigh killed myself taking it half full to the bathroom where I'd cleared the space for it where the betta had been. They got half the fish furniture from the 30. Then came bailing the long twenty down to nearly empty and hurting myself getting it up on the 30's old stand. I bailed as much as the long twenty would take from the back up twenty, as there is a chance some fry might have traveled into it with the plants and water. Then I hurt myself again getting the back up twenty from coffee table to the long twenty's old stand. This makes sense as it's a better use of space and gives the betta display space. Then came the long process of getting the rest of the thirty dirt into the twenty and 15, filling both, setting both up with basic resources. I've no light for the 15 and the back up twenty's going to share the tall twenty light. I'm short a bio filter and really need two heaters as they are on their last legs as well as lights. I saw the adults swimming around the fifteen and the corys survivors poking around in the long twenty, so I suppose that is something. I don't really trust the back up tanks which is why they were emergency back up tanks. The pleco was alive at feeding time, so fingers crossed. So that is what I did today with all of the spoons and likely tomorrow's.

Fry Addendum: It looks like a lot of the little ones made it. I've propped a betta light in there for the plants, which isn't particularly safe, but fry health requires plants to hide in. Also, I spotted the whiptail grazing the corys tank.

* Well that was dramatic. Some of you may have noticed the syntax oddities with last night's lj entry. This is because Windows on the lap top force restarted me against my will. Reboot took so long I gave up and went to bed. Today my body was being difficult, so i took getting up slow.

I came out to discover multiple emergencies, the chief of them being that the 30 gallon tank had sprung a leak. The 30 gallon had plecos and the new platys splinter colony which was mostly fry. Trying to patch it was no good as the water pressure was too high for the sealant. So I had to find (and patch) the back up 20, move twenty gallons of dirt, water, and plants over there, then try to patch the 30. I left the fish, as I was hoping I could save them that level of trauma. I finally got to eat while the sealant was drying, then tried refilling. It seemed to be holding. It sprang a leak at the point where I was ready to turn the filter back on. Sigh. So back the water went into the back up twenty. I caught the pleco and moved the pour thing into the inhabited tall twenty with the guppies, but I am worried about the thing. I honestly suspect we've lost the splinter colony, but I simply am not up to pulling everything out to get to the back up... it might be a ten or a fifteen, I forget which, prepping it, finding a place for it, and trying to catch and transfer the fish over there. What I really need, of cource is a new 30 and money for replacement bulbs so I'm not constantly having to move the lighting around between tanks to keep the plants alive. while I'm at it, I might as well wish for money for new filters instead of having to rinse them out and reuse them, and money to restock, and, and... yeah. Like any of that is going to happen. I haven't money for a new tube of tank sealant so I can keep patching the old tanks (I used nearly everything tonight), and I'm running out of goosh again. I literally was still working at cleaning up tank disaster aftermath at 2AM. So tomorrow I'll try refilling the 30 and seeing if another layer of sealant solved it and discover if I still have live fish in there.

We have no money for property taxes. Squirrel's car needs breaks, mine needs tires. We're still having to pay back the landlord for them failing to auto withdraw last year. I'm falling unfixably behind on bills trying to feed this elderly cat and keep us in things like laundry detergent and lung medicine. Something is wrong with the fridge and it’s past warranty. Squirrel's still trying to pay last year's medical bills which means he can't pay for them to fix his heart. At this point I'd need something like 1200.00 for taxes and bills just to keep going. I used too much gas getting my computer running again and gas is money. I have prescriptions waiting for pick up I couldn't afford the copay on. It's exhausting.

So fish purchases to keep the colonies safe is right out. I was so excited about all those healthy fry getting born. I am suspecting the mothers won't even survive and they are heartier.
