They are both valid tactics and I refuse to attack people for making a principled stand, whichever way they decided to do it. It's the people going along and kissing up that I'm angry with. No, I didn't watch it. My patience with bigoted word salad is tiny and I'm now ill enough that I keep having to wake up to readjust so I don't choke in my sleep. * There was a long piece of reporting filmed towards the end of the big West African Ebola epidemic in one of the field hospitals. It was basically a series of big tents with the medical personnel taking the best precautions they could and doing the best they could in a horrific situation with nowhere near enough staff and supplies. There was the serious acute ward behind plastic sheeting airlocks and the usual footage of them unloading the living and dead from trucks to be triaged, but this was something terrible, yes, but something expected which I'd seen before. This wasn't the part that haunts me to this day.

The thing that I think about often, the thing I will likely never get out of my head, is the recovery area. This was another big long barracks like tent, with a fenced in yard sort of set up and outdoor showers. On the other side of the fence were family members camped out with tents and lawn chairs to visit the people on the other side. The people on the other side had miraculously survived the worst part of the disease with the hemorrhaging and the terrible fluids, but were not yet well and safe to return to the world.

I don't think I'd ever really thought about this, despite having followed ebola since it first started showing up under various names in the world press. Of course it takes ages to recover from something so extreme if one doesn't die right off. I just never imagined what it was like. All these people of all ages from the old to the occasional infants, lethargic and obviously still terribly ill, lying on their cots or occasionally dressing at a snails pace or shuffling out to shower and toilets or into the yard for a bit of air. They were well enough to eat, to dress, to move around a bit, but they were emaciated and so obviously not okay. The Doctor would move from cot to cot, checking on people and occasionally one would be curled up dead, wearing the brightly coloured street clothes the presumably convalescent person had put on themselves that morning. They found a man slumped at the bottom of a shower dead. To have survived the worst, to think they were going to make and then to die so suddenly that they had no chance to call out or get help. The doctor's comment was along the lines of we don't know exactly why it is happening, their systems are under such strain that sometimes they just stop. Somehow, even though it is is a kinder way to die than if they had died during the worst of it, it felt so much worse. I suppose it is in human nature to want a proper happy ending or something.

Out in the yard there was an older boy, who was mostly better waiting for his father to improve enough for release. He was holding a lethargic toddler in his lap, an orphan, who was failing to thrive. The baby had been in recovery a couple of weeks and would start to bond to someone and that person would die or leave. The toddler was old enough to talk, but didn't and seemed to be weaker every day. The staff seemed to honestly be doing their best for and for all of them, but it was that same strange system stress that was randomly taking some adults every day. The adults he came in with were all dead and no one is sure where he came from or what his name was or what they'd do with him if by some miracle he didn't die. If I remember correctly, his body failed while the film crew was still around, but it might have been a different baby; it was a while ago.

I just think about it now and then and wonder how all those people are now: the exhausted medical staff who served through all that death and despair, the father and son, the people who eventually made it out of the recovery enclosure still breathing. Ebola lingers. It hides in reservoirs in the body and can re-surge and kill the host or infect love ones; it can do permanent damage to a survivor who is free of the pathogen itself.

It haunts me. I suspect it haunts a lot of people so much worse.

* I think Andrew Holleran mourns similar to the way I mourn. I have reached the point in the book that is all about the loudness of absence.

* I've started the men's shorts from the U S championship. It's three hours, so I'll obviously be at this a while. The thing that is heartbreaking about the championships in an Olympic year is that this is the place dreams go to die. yes, there are up and comers and old favorites for whom this is a stepping stone to somewhere better, but there are also people who've worked incredibly hard and sacrificed just as much for whom this is their only real moment in the spotlight every year and it does not go well. Skating is expensive, all those coaching fees and the cost of travel and the skates and costumes and rink fees. All that time spent and the opportunity costs to try to do something amazing, and so many of them don't make it. I had a friend at my first college who did well on the Junior circuit and made it to regional. I adored him. And you know me, I root for them all to skate clean, to do the very best they are capable. The Championships are hard to watch. The young woman who took a whole year off from school in hopes that this would be her year, and who's short program suggested it won't be. Women as young as fourteen botching a jump and scooting across the ice in often undignified positions after a fall. That poor bastard who fell everywhere and shares a couch with a big name. according to johnny weir it sounds like the coach gives them both similar routines and the guy can't execute them. The poor man who moves well, but hasn't got a triple axle, let alone quads. The guy who pulled a pretty kick ass short, but couldn't go even if he won, as he's not a citizen yet. I watch because someone who doesn't know them ought to see them even if only this once and because someone who doesn't know them personally ought to be rooting for them even though they can't hear it and will never know. I watch because sometimes, someone does something amazing and unexpected and I like to keep an eye on the future. Still it is always emotional to watch even though I generally never even caught their names. (I am terrible at names and had to drill myself hard when I was teaching and I lose even the names of close friends once they are gone for a few years. The big names and folks like Rabbitt and Savary I remember, the last two being both delightful and having easy names to remember. Savary was heartbreaking as he's so damned fun to watch, but he popped his quad so that's it for him pretty much). Look, there really were some cool routines from guys I've no memory of watching before, which is why I'm here, but I always end up wincing and occasionally weeping for the ones for whom this is as good as it will ever get and who know it. The young ones will have more chances, but for the older skaters this is often the end of something they've put everything they had into since they were small.

I'll know where I am financially Mondayish, but I have hopes of doing a proper kibble/litter/tp/gas run after Monday forage, or later in the week if I'm not up to it then. I definitely have enough for the weekend of everything except possibly litter. (I for sure have enough for one box, but not the others.

* Progress continues with the Beasties. Tavy is mostly letting her sleep with him on top of me as long as I am also asleep, but continues to object to her attempts to curl up with him on me while I am reading or the like. I keep kicking him off for assholery in a no conflict zone, but this process tends to scare her off too. Today she was clever and after two attempts at cuddle naps, she cleverly curled up on the other side of the barrier pillow within pettin reach and had a good love and a nap. I keep hoping she'll figure out Hector's old trick of curling up on my pillow while it's still cool enough.

Today she stopped playing to let Squirrel bend down and pet her even though humans are huge and scary when they walk. her Host human said she like shoulder cuddles, but no sign of it yet, though she does nap on my desk and has seen Tavy signal for them and get them. I still have hope.

We're just generally working on no conflict zone training, which is working out better on my desk than the bed so far though not perfectly. Mostly the issue is 1. Tavy not wanting to share me in particular situations. 2. Tavy responding to her signals that she's done being groomed now by intensifying rather than backing off, which I am also working on gently but firmly. To be clear, she really does like him grooming her, and arrives already purring like a motor cycle engine rolling carefully into grooming position. It's just him not knowing when to stop.

As I typed this in the late afternoon, they were hanging out on the living room window sill peacefully watching the birds etc..

* I've been really annoyed with myself the last few years for how many fewer books I read than I used to. I love reading, I love learning things, and was honestly starting to low key worry about mental deterioration. A couple of months ago, a friend referenced how many articles I read a day and I was like, "Oooohhhhh! I'm likely reading a similar page count, it's just instead of reading a book or two a day, I'm reading 2/3-3/4 of it in a form where I can't see the progress. I did, in fact also read approximately 2 1/2 feet of ILL books in the last two months, plus various non-ILL library books, library graphic novels, and the like. I am not in fact suddenly stupid, although I seem to have undergone another of those shifts in the way one's brain stores and processes data again, sort of like happens in one's mid-twenties, and that other one I noticed last time I was taking university courses for teach certificate renewal and one of the early twenty something's turned to me after the Prof used one of my exam answers as an example for the class in a YA for teachers class and asked, "How did you know all that and put it together that way?" and I said, "Oh, I cheated; I'm carrying an extra decade of knowledge around in my head." Which got me noticing and I realized I was chunking data way more efficiently with geometrically more cross connections than I had in my twenties. I am not convinced this more recent change in the way my brain organizes information is in any way an improvement. It's more like that thing when I was working on my first Master's degree in my twenties and I noticed my brain was full and I was losing information like what I'm meant to be doing Wednesday to make room for long lists of ale brewers and malefactors of the Marsh in early 14th century court rolls. Unfortunately I am losing a bunch of useful historical information i very much wanted to keep in favour of things like election details for four or five key countries in Africa, where and what epidemics and outbreaks are going on, what wars, the pipeline of horror out on Moscow and DC, a like a hundred terrible things I track in Ukraine, Yemen, Syria, the Philippines, Australian detention camps, etc.,etc.. Hence me flipping out and going to town on high medieval social, economic, and political history refreshers because forgetting shit I used to know like my own name pisses me off.

So I'm feeling a lot less stupid, even if this is a bit of aging I'm not liking.

Why am I talking about this? Because there's been all this stuff in the news about how much TV 45 watches. People are acting as if it's the number that is the problem. I watch lot of TV. I spend several hours in bed each day trying to do things like getting all my body parts to cooperate (which works better if I go slow), doing meds, getting dressed, petting and playing with cats, plus the wind down process involving putting things away, last meds, playing with and/or petting cats, re-configuring the bed so the prop pillows hold everything in place to minimize pain and damage before settling in to read and sleep. Like, between bed time and decanting from bed I watched the whole first disc of Stranger Things which Netflix finally released and came from the library yesterday, so that's like 4ish hours of TV right there, plus a whole episode of superstition during food and lungs, plus hours of assorted news programs that help me figure out what key words to be searching on top of the obvious ones, plus the commentary and assorted fun stuff I often have on in the background, but I also read three chapters of 15th century land disputes and the early battles of the Wars of the Roses plus associated English politics before I got up. I will likely read another chapter of that or another two of the painfully lyrical, charmingly literary, and utterly devastating AIDS memoir I am reading. If I take a bath that's a chunck of a graphic novel, plus the news fire hose from which I condense the best into links for y'all. I'm guessing I'm in the 8-12 hour range, which makes me WORSE than 45 on paper, and yet I'm damned sure I've a far greater grasp of what's going on in the world than he does despite me not having a daily intelligence briefing and access to the experts at the State Department, CIA, etc..

I think quality matters, which is not to say that I don't read and watch a lot of fun stuff. It's just my diet of information is reasonably varied, I read as well as watch, and I think as well as consume. I'm making analogies between the way Detroit is changing with certain ancient and medieval cities that experienced traumatic population contraction and resulting chaos and how they ultimately adapted. I'm taking in modern economic policy news and plugging it into my knowledge of micro and macro economics and several thousand years of historical knowledge about how economies and economic policies tend to effect each other. I'm taking current Jeff Session news and matching it up with a rich racial, political, and economic context from the whole of colonial and US history and how shit tends to go and why and what it actually means for human type people having to live with those decisions. I don't think any of that is true of 45. I don't think anything even vaguely like that goes on inside his head. I'm not convinced he's capable of imagination, empathy, or long term strategic thinking.

Every time this sad little word pictures of how 45 spends his days turn up in the news, a picture of President Obama working pops into my head. I think of him, jacket off and sleeves rolled up working hard at his desk, reading dispatches and briefs and legislation and treaties. I think of him in meetings paying attention and asking astute questions. I think of a man with the imagination and intellectual curiosity to ask what trans folk really needed in this country and get actual answers from transfolk that led to him improving our lives in 150+ small, unglamorous, utterly crucial ways that hardly anyone noticed because things like stopping a W era policy of having Homeland security automatically out trans job seekers to potential employers on;y matter to the transfolk who'd been denied jobs because they'd been outed and then weren't next time they applied somewhere. I picture him and Michelle propped up in bed at night with books and papers scattered everywhere, trying their damnedest to work out on a practical level what is best for the country and the world.

Look, I didn't always agree with President Obama, but I could look at any given decision he made and follow the basic decision making process and rationale based on publicly available knowledge, and with the understanding there are like a million things I don't know due to not having a massive staff of experts and access to State department and intelligence agency resources, etc.. I could have faith that he really thought shit through before deciding. I could see where he was trying to make the best of a no win. I quickly got a feel for his style of risk taking and was comfortable with it, even when I didn't agree. I knew that there was a first rate mind who had traveled to other countries and practiced constitutional law bringing all resources to bear on massive problems, and there was comfort in that.

For the last year I've watched BBC anchors and exports trying ever more frantically to find and assign some sort of thought or strategy to 45's actions and words while trying to disguise what I strongly suspect is rising panic. I DON'T THINK THERE IS ANY TO FIND, beyond self interest, tantrums, and a hunger to cause as much chaos as possible to get ratings. That's it. That's all there is. No deep thought or strategy, no three dimensional chess; just random impulses, greed, a toddler screaming "Look at me" while he loses at tic tac toe because he can't think even one move ahead.

* Me watching Superstition: That is the best sweater! You aren't going to do experiments in that sweater are you? Aiyeeeee! Stand back! You'll get blood on the best sweater ever! Is the sweater okay? I can't see! Shit, there's blood on her face! They got the sweater, didn't they. Damn.

Really though? This show is ridiculously good. I think I finally convinced Squirrel to try it. *fingers crossed* It is definitely the best new show this fall season and I'm really worried not enough people are watching it. (And Exorcist and Ghost Wars). Where are all the people who loved first season Sleepy Hollow and the first five seasons of Supernatural? Why aren't they mobbing social media with fic and art and ships and speculation? I really, really don't want this thing cancelled because the people who would like it never heard of it.

* I'm having one of my physical inconveniences this evening. Before things went south, physically, I managed to make good progress on the gift lighting. The second string of white clusters had a dead place in it, so I was forced to rethink. It's outside with the blue drape I leave up September to January. I have three strings of traditional Christmas lights with blown electricals, two mixed and one all white, and three empty strings with good electricals. I am scavenging the bulbs from the dead to light the living and doing it in such a way that next year I can also count them for Halloween. I've got red and white up in my bedroom window, with the white facing in. I've got Orange and green alternating until I ran out of orange and just did green draped. I need to do what I hope to be a blue and purple string, but I may have to fill with red and/or white. We'll see.

Tavy and Livia are comfortable to the point that they mostly play when both awake, with her wearing him out first, and me trying to provide entertainment here and there, but they are also able to ignore each other when they want food or sleep. I showed her how the busy box works last night and I set up some toys half stuck out in hopes of her practicing. She got one of the mice out to play with herself. Petty good for four months. she's not ready to try the harder ones yet, but I am very proud off her.

Livia will come right up to us when we are still and use our legs as terrain for pouncing out in ambush at Tavy if we stay still, but runs if we move or try to touch her, though she's touched me a few times. Tavy still resists her desire to sit on the top of the cat tree with him, but he's given up chasing her out of the cave just below. When I wrote these, she'd been crashed out in there for an hour or two and he'd gotten bored and come to sleep in his mesting box, pressed against my instep. It is progress.

Addendum: When Squirrel went out for work, scattering cats ahead of him, there was a gift package of hooks and micropellets waiting for me. Thank you, Benefactress! I shall try to do more anchoring tomorrow with them if there is time before the guests arrive.

Livia update: She took all her evening naps in the cat tree cave in my office. So right there close to Tavy where she could see me and I could see her.

* So I'm just short of a week in on this lung infection, which it turns out squirrel also has, along with his nursing home. Odds are, he gave it to me. I did get him to stay home Thursday and he's been holed up in his cave only emerging for juice and supplies. I'm puttering along at half speed and on maximum meds, as knock you on your ass sick for a healthy person is medium sick to someone who is always sick and used to making due. This thing has only tried to suffocate me twice, which is nothing compared to say, a month of life threatening pneumonia or six months of lung MRSA. So annoying, requires hoarded resources and much sleep. I don't need to leave the house until Monday anyway, so it's mostly inconveniencing rp partners anyway. As always, there is a chance of escalation or secondary infection, but I'm already doing everthing I can for now.

Thanks to all of you who have written in about the tech. After a consultation, it sounds like the shitty microsoft update that turned my computer into an asshole the last week or so is a contributing factor. Odds are that the Firefox update was more the straw that broke the camels back rather than the main culprit. Things appear a touch more stable today, so I am holding off on rolling things back in hopes that microsoft will get their shit together.

* Figure Skating: NHK.

Ladies: Chartrand seems to have picked a program that works well with her strengths, but some of her second half elements fell apart. Mirai Nagasu had a lovely skate. Medvedeva was having an uncharacteristically rough skate and actually fell? Seriously, this season has been full of rough skates for the top people. I hope they are getting it all out of the way before the Olympics. Polina Tsurskaya is only just up from juniors and apparently has had a lot of injuries, but oh, do I like how she skates. Seriously, I think whoever gets the third slot will do fine. Carolina Kostner's choreography suits her and her skating is really expressive, but she was having a little trouble tonight too, though not as bad as it might have been and the silver was deserved.

Men: I wrote a whole complex thing up, but the computer ate it and reconstructing it is too much work, frankly.

* All the paper decorations and clings are down for the season, the boxes are all away neatly with the Solstice set easy to hand for phase 4 in late November. I've got everything rearranged for harvest display purposes with the prettiest gourd in my livingroom window and the rest outside. I definitely feel accomplished and am enjoying this brief lung respite and the waking up fairly mobile bit.

My friends had mass transit drama, but turned up offering pizza. It was a good visit, but w startled to discover it was not only snowing, but sticking when we came out. I took them anyway as I gauged we would likely just have time to get there and back before it was too dangerous for my car. It was ugly at my end of town with low visibility because of the wind + snow situation, but the road hadn't had time to ice and wet conditions are what we call 8 months of the year here. It was not yet snowing past the town limits, but the stretch where the winds are bad was extra bad. As they unloaded, it started to snow lightly, but it wasn't sticking yet there. by the time we crossed my town limits again, the snow was sticking on the highway in the way that suggests it could be hidden ice ugly at any minute. I dropped my last passenger off at the foot of her hill because no fucking way was I taking my car up that and the pedestrian was was safer for her than my car out of control into traffic would have been. Pulling out of the lot where I dropped her off, I hit my first ice patch and the country length block home and my complex parking lot were the most dangerous part of the trip even though the visibility was better as I kept finding black ice under the snow. I learned to drive in snow country and still have the right instincts so it was fine, but I am not leaving the house again until it clears, which sucks as I have meds to pick up and EBT cleared today and I had things I need to get, but I will manage.

It isn't that cold. When I took my friend to fetch the take 'n bakes I didn't bother with a coat as it was what I consider comfortable chilly. My coat was a little heavy for the cold on the taking people hope loop, and I went out barefoot to put the guest chair back on the patio where it lives. My snow country instincts insist it's not cold enough to last, but the weather here has been strange the last 3/4 of a decade with climate change messing up our wind patterns, so things are less predictable.

* I've been rewatching All the President's Men. You would think I'd seen this movie often, but I was born not that long before Watergate and growing up in the '70's, one was apt to find Watergate exhausting. It is hugely important, of course and shaped so much that came after, but I am at the educated person who pays reasonable attention to history and politics level here. I'm an Xer; not a Boomer. So I didn't get around to watching it until the mid 90's, at which point the movie, like the scandal itself was something with historical importance, but not pressing or all that relevant beyond the longer reaching influences and resulting changes to law and the whole movie histor angle. It was interesting and well made, but not viceral and immediate the way it was to the original Bicentenial year audience.

Watching it now, I have way too many emotions to properly write about. It has it's original power back, I think, and beyond that a strange nostalgia to a time when journalists actually asked tough questions (there are exceptions, but it's rare now), to when long form reporting and long term investigations were something that news outlets could afford and actually funded (There are exceptions, but shrinkingly few and soon to be fewer with the rise of Sinclair media and deregulation). To a time when 1/3 of the electorate lives in a fact and reality free zone. To a time when people actually gave a fuck whether the president was a crook or not, or at least enough of them to matter.

I suppose I should rewatch Frost/Nixon soon.

* Wednesday Night: It's getting about time to get out that warm black wrap thing Skye's Step Monster gave us that I wear around the house when it get's chilly, now that I've gotten rid of all the old army shirts.... Wonder where I put it?

Thursday Night: Okay, I really need the comfy wrap thing. I remember confiscating it from the cats last Spring and washing it.... Okay not in that closet. I know it's not in the bedroom closet because I've been through it twice in the last year and know exactly what is in there. Not on the hangers in the hall closet, which would be the obvious place to put it. Fuck, I am going to have to take this closet apart. The closet I didn't clean last spring as it was an exhausting prospect and the wheelchair is a pain in the ass, but also, I did want to see if the lovely soft hand woven scarf fell off in there and not while I was out and about last winter....

Me: Took the whole closet apart and swept starting at 4AM. Because of course. Neither thing was in there but it did need doing as I hadn't taken it all apart properly since we moved here. Somehow, properly organized it all takes up MORE SPACE. Of course it does.

Cat: Is WAY over stimulated.

Me: The fuck did I do with the comfy wrap?

* It's an Olympic year, which is always exciting. People are pulling out the routines on which their fate's depend. The grand Prix in Russia was the first big event, and people were generally and completely understandably a bit rough. Much to my annoyance we didn't get short programs here. *Growl* I rather liked Dmitri Aliev, but I suspect he won't peak in time for PyeongChang. It looks to me like neither Ge, who skates beautifully but hasn't the jumps, and Kolyada, who the commentators like but to me never seems to connect properly with music or crowd, will be up to contending with the top men who have been skating at a level that is out of this world lately. Yuzuru Hanyu was having a rough night technically compared to his usual work the last three years, but I loved that routine two years ago and I think once he gets properly in the groove it will be exquisite. I had hoped last year that the brilliant jumper Nathan Chen would spend the summer working on getting his artistics up to level and I was not disappointed. Apparently he's been studying ballet and it really shows. He's so much more graceful than he was, even though he too was having a below average for him technical night. He's not as complex as Hanyu, who is the most beautiful on the ice of any man I've ever seen skate when he's having a good night, but he's now skating in a way that means their skate rivalry may very well be epic. I am looking forward to seeing what the other top level guys are bringing this year, because I already have chills thinking ahead to February and I haven't yet seen the other three I consider serious metal contenders. I'm a huge Hanyu fan, but there is no doubt in my mind Chen skated this one better.

The women's competition was also mostly rough skating as they are also shaking the bugs out. Mariah Bell was fun to watch but uneven as usual. I think Mirai Nagasu's program really suits her even if she was rather a mess technically at the event. I have hopes of her doing much better once she's shaken the bugs out. The commentators liked Elena Radionova's performance better than I did, but it has potential. I really enjoyed Wakaba Higuchi's performance. She's got a little technical work to do before February, but all the potential's there and i think her choreography suits her. Evgenia Medvedeva was delightful as usual, and except for a fall that startled me, the skate commentators, and from her expression Evgenia, flawless in every other way. There is a reason she is Queen not only of the most competitive women's program in the world just now, but women's skating generally. Carolina Kostner Really is a pleasure to watch on the ice. She hasn't the jumps to compete with the likes of Medvedeva, but I am a sucker for a mature rounded skating style, which is her forte. She earned her silver here fair and square.

I wanted to add that I wish Gracie Gold all the best. It is very brave of her to speak out about what she's struggling with given the stigmas our society imposes on people. It must be heart wrenching for her to have to decide to take time off for what may very well be her survival from the sound of it. I think she made the right choice however much it hurt. Skating's always been right up there with gymnastics as sports where incredibly unhealthy pressure is put on young women to have bodies that re unrealistic for the level of athleticism required to actually do the sport. I was furious with Dick button for most of my life for being a nasty, creepy old man talking publicly in the commentary about the bodies of often adolescent young women and mocking them for "baby fat" or not meeting his personal standards of attractiveness. I was glad when he retired and replaced by less horrible humans. My understanding is that, like gymnastics, there is an effort to improve, as so many people developed life threatening eating disorders and other mental illnesses, but that doesn't mean the pressure disappears or the culture magically changes over night. I wish her the best of luck and best of care in her recovery.

* Today we had a proper September rain and reasonable early September weather. Heaven. I went out to pick up my Winter food flats. I still have one out standing that I don't expect for a while as there is a delay at manufacturer, but I knew that when I ordered it.

What is the deal with Winter food flats? Over the years, various safe for me to eat, easy to make, shelf stable emergency foods have quietly disappeared from the local shelves. If you are as sick as I often am, things like nutritious, good tasting, easy on the stomach, low sodium, things I can prepare in five minutes or less are magic. Unfortunately, if one is ordering food, it comes in a minimum quantity. On the upside, if I do it this way, I get a quantity discount on top of my coop member discount. It represents a large outlay at once, but is long run cheaper. Usually I space this stuff out, but I waited too late in season last March or April, and stuff was out for the summer. I was worried if I didn't order now, summer seasonal would be gone or I might miss Autumn in the press of Autumnal foods tempting me not to plan ahead.

I am not going to starve whatever, as I possess a ridiculous amount of rice and pasta. For me the issue is balancing nutrition around my SPD, medical, and chronic illness stuff. I discovered I alarmed some people about the food supply here, so I want to reassure people that I'll be okay. Squirrel teases me about my Zombie Apocolypse food horde of pasta and the like. I just... feel so much better with winter emergency supplies safely tucked up.

Questions like, "What do you need", "Would you like me to help with that?", "What would you like me to do?", "What would be most useful for me to do?", and "How can I help you?" are magically because they not only are a subset of consent, but also let you target help when and where it is actually needed instead of just making things worse by barging into a situation without listen to the person or people you are trying to help.

On the personal scale, it is things like asking a person in mourning what they actually need instead of drowning them in food they can't store for the first two days than disappearing. Maybe what they actually need is respite child care or help with the dishes. How will you know I you didn't ask? Similarly, just grabbing someone's arm or wheelchair handles without asking is invasive and the absolute opposite of helping. Odds are you are about to knock someone off balance, make them lose step count, impede rather than facilitate, etc.. Not asking means it's about your ego or how you feel or what you want. Asking if you can help sincerely and listening to the answer, including no, is actually helping. Odds are I do want help cleaning up after the wake or carrying that stack of packages, but you don't know if you didn't ask me.

It's the same with allyship. Educate yourself. Listen to the discourse. Interrogate your biases and privilege. Listen to the people in the community you are wanting to stand with, and pay attention to what they say they need from allies. Signal boost their messages. Give the help that is asked for instead of imposing your ideas of what is best, because the people in that community have thought longer and harder on what needs to happen than even the most well meaning person can.

It's the same on the big scale too. When we invaded Afghanistan there was all this high minded rhetoric about helping women. Government programs, NGOs, and private charities all turned up with big ideas about how to "help," but it's not helping if you don't ask. Very little attempt was made to ask Afghan women what they needed, or enlist them in planning and decision making. The women we claimed to want to help were infantilized by paternalistic outsiders who never once considered that the people they were pretending to help might have their own, superior ideas as to what would actually improve things. When Jenny Nordberg came through much later and actually *gasp* asked, women said that they wanted things like full scholarships for young women from rural areas to go to school to become doctors, nurses, teachers, etc., so they could afford to train and then return where they were most needed, but that wasn't the sort of thing westerners convinced they know best would think of, because they don't know conditions on the intimate level that the women born and raised there did. I use this example, because it is on my mond lately, but there are other things in the world news this applies to.

It's not helping if you didn't ask first and you didn't listen to the answers.

* TNG Rewatch, Season 6:

- a Fist Full of Datas. So in the Scotty episode they used the holodeck without anything going wrong. I think that may be a record, one whole episode with holodeck bu no injuries or dangerous malfunctions. I've been recently rewatching the HBO Deadwood, which is rather a stark contrast, as you can imagine. This version ought to be cleaned up and a little silly, as it's a child's let's pretend. Of course, TOS Tombstone (and the Hartnell Doctor Who Tombstone) haven't that excuse. Anyway, Worf is bad at pretend and also still struggling with the parent thing, and very, very Worf. I am really uncomfortable with the cartoony Mexican bandito stereotype, and I could have done without the man in dress based punchline. has anything good ever come of tampering with Data's brain? Amusing call back to the infamous data cat poem. Brent Spiner is delightful in this and it is good to see them give Marina Sirtis something worth doing. I do enjoy the conflicting value systems here as Worf struggles to deal with something entirely alien. It was good Worf actually does the riht thing with Alexander for once. Is this episode the start of Diana/Worf?

- The Quality of Life. The Beard debate... I have no idea how to feel about it. The opposition set up between feminist discourse and self expression is messy in a very Star trek sort of way and does wend us back towards the personhood theme fundamental to Data in particular and Star trek as a whole. Even though Data isn't in this particular scene, this is a Data episode and does deal with artificial life and personhood. Seriously, the season six writing is noticeably better and I appreciate the little bits of continuity like Geordi's beard. The bickering is understandable given the stress, but exhausting to watch. This episode is full of big questions: What is life? What happens in the moment between being and not being? What constitutes slavery when it comes to AI? What are the ethics around testing for sapience? Is one intelligent lifeform more valuable than another?I do like that thesolution came dp
