* You know how I can tell Chuck Grassley thinks Kavanaugh's guilty? He keeps claiming that the use of evidence and corroborating witnesses is unfair to the accused and insisting that impartial investigation by the FBI or an outside investigator is unnecessary. Why would he do that if he thought there was any chance of exonerating facts?

You know how I can tell most Republican politicians and pundits think he's guilty? Most of them jumped right to attempting to rape someone as a teen says nothing about his character and should be discounted, instead of claiming innocence.

You know how I can tell Kavanaigh clearly remembers doing it and knows that trying to rape people ought to be disqualifying, even though he doesn't think perjury or theft are crimes? He now has a friend out claiming Dr. Blasey Ford confused Kavanaugh for one of her then and still friends who is now a teacher as if she wouldn't know who tried to rape her, as if she'd have stayed friends with him after. It's an acknowledgement that she was assaulted and no one sensible would believe the mistaken identity nonsense.

I believed her any way from day one, of course. I'm just pointing out that the people refusing to follow normal Senate procedures so as to cover up the crime preety clearly know that they are covering up a crime.

* Please, please, please if you can manage it, contact your Senators to get them to fight the Kavanaugh nomination. This is geometrically more important if you have a centrist Democrat like Joseph Manchin, Joe Donnelly, Doug Jones, Jon Tester, and Heidi Heitkamp; or Republicans like Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski. (For Scott and Rubio emphasize Kavanaugh's racism and support for racial profiling, for Collins and Murkowski emphasize the right to chose, the nominee allegedly having attempted to violently rape someone, and the Jane Doe case where he tried to force a raped immigrant teen to carry against her will, With Murowski, you might also mention his opposition to programs benefiting Alaska Natives). Jeff Flake of Arizona may be softening! Please, if you are from Arizona, keep the pressure on! Contact Chuck Schumer and ask him to whip the Democrats so as to get them to stand in united opposition. It wouldn't hurt to demand your Republican Senators call for a proper FBI Background investigation. They won't, but pressuring them shows them there might be consequences.

No, I didn't watch it. My patience with bigoted word salad is tiny and I'm now ill enough that I keep having to wake up to readjust so I don't choke in my sleep. Frankly, I'd rather be cleaning toilette than watching 45's nonsense in concentrated form. I'm sure the most egregious bits will show up in the news when I'm ready to engage with them.

* The prezzie turned out to be a black, handwoven scarf. I am difficult about textures, but this one was smooth and soft enough that the test wearing went well, so I think it will work. I love the subtle texture of the weave. The amount of work and skill involved blows me away rather. LM is quite pleased with the wrapping material which involved some excellent crinkly tissue paper from which she has made her self an excellent mest.

* Most of this post was written before bed last night. Tibicina, her gentleman, and I had a nice lunch at the tea salon and a visit at my new digs. Greenwick and I packed some odds and ends, brought those over, and assembled the patio shelving. There was pho for dinner and some shopping after. I'm pretty much done in. The movers come Friday afternoon, so tomorrow will be getting things ready for them instead of me trying to do it tonight. The outdoor shelving looks good and works the way I imagined, so we can bring over the rest of the planters and garden stuff Sundayish. (I did call the management company to pre-clear the storage shelves and they are a better fit with the rules than a lot of the things I see on other patios, but someone can always take exception and the rules could be changed to specifically exclude my shelving. One of the upstairs neighbors at minimum are jerks and they routinely through rotting garbage off their patio so it's strewn all over our walkway. Given what a dick maneuver it is to ambush us with mystery fluids and rotting vegetables I have zero expectation for civility in other matters. As there are multiple floors and I haven't caught them at it, I don't know which of them it is).

* 119 people are dead in a poultry plant fire in China. The employees were all locked in, so not only couldn't they escape, but the firefighters had a hard time getting in.

* There is massive flooding in central Europe. At least four are dead in Germany, with many evacuated. There's a national emergency declared in the Czech Republic. Austria an Poland are also being hit. It is unclear how many countries will be affected as it's still coming down. It's massively disrupting shipping on or near the Danube and the Rhine as well as breaking some bridges and rail lines.

* There have been violent protests in Turkey for four days. The protests started over a park being redeveloped, but the grievances likely run deeper. I'm seeing a whole lot of finger pointing from multiple sides. Please remember that Turkey is a Democracy and has been for quite a while; there is a lot of reporting out there from people who know nothing about Turkey beyond it's place on the map saying things that do not make sense. This is a different deal than what has been happening in other countries. I am seeing wildly disparate casualty figures so rather than picking a set at random, I'm leaving them off.

* There is now fighting on the Lebanese side of the Syrian border near Qusayr. It looks like some of the Gulf powers feel Hezbollah getting involved in the Syrian Civil war is a step too far and are threatening to intervene.

* Contemplate this: Walmart has 1.3 million employees. For them to have a living wage, it would cost the average Walmart shopper 46 cents. Alternately, the CEO makes 27 million dollars a year in salary, so he and the Walton family could make slightly less and it would have no effect on their lifestyle. Now imagine the economic benefit to the country of 1.3 million people suddenly making enough to live on. Instead, we have decided it's more logical to spend massive amounts of taxpayer money to subsidize Walmart's practice of not properly paying working in the form of Medicaid, EBT/SNAP, housing subsidies, etc., and take the hit to our economy that all those people not having money to by necessities causes.

* While watching the Actor's Studio, I saw the creepiest thing I've seen since Costos interviewed Sandusky. She was talking about the damage that being sexualized at such a young age did to her and how she came to feel like her body wasn't her own as a young woman. He sat there talking about how turned on by her he was when she was fifteen even though he was an adult man at the time and then told a story about hw he tried to take her virginity by proxy when she was twenty two by selecting a pretty young soldier to be her escort. He then pressured her to tell if he "won the sweepstakes." Eeew, eeew, eeeew. There she was trying to be polite to this disgusting old man who's openly perving on her, but her body language suggested serious discomfort.

I admit, I'm a little sensitive to it as someone who started attracted adult male interest as seven, and who then had to deal with that increasingly intense interest for the rest of my growing up. While I didn't have to dodge pedophiles on an international scale, I have a whole lot of sympathy for what it must have survive and grow up into a reasonably functional adult under that pressure. She's so brave talking about the ways the male gaze fucked up her life, and it was really upsetting to see him ignore that in his single minded pursuit of his sexual agenda.

* Things continue bad in Cyprus. There is a 300 Euro limit on withdraws, which is making it hard for people to pay bills. It's pretty much long term borked International investment and local business, since the banking system isn't safe or useful. Along with Greece, this is setting a scary precedent for the ways the strong Eurozone economies can decide to randomly destroy, likely for generations, the smaller ones. If the can come in and do this to Cyprus, what is the next country's economy they will dismantle as punishment?
