* All the paper decorations and clings are down for the season, the boxes are all away neatly with the Solstice set easy to hand for phase 4 in late November. I've got everything rearranged for harvest display purposes with the prettiest gourd in my livingroom window and the rest outside. I definitely feel accomplished and am enjoying this brief lung respite and the waking up fairly mobile bit.
My friends had mass transit drama, but turned up offering pizza. It was a good visit, but w startled to discover it was not only snowing, but sticking when we came out. I took them anyway as I gauged we would likely just have time to get there and back before it was too dangerous for my car. It was ugly at my end of town with low visibility because of the wind + snow situation, but the road hadn't had time to ice and wet conditions are what we call 8 months of the year here. It was not yet snowing past the town limits, but the stretch where the winds are bad was extra bad. As they unloaded, it started to snow lightly, but it wasn't sticking yet there. by the time we crossed my town limits again, the snow was sticking on the highway in the way that suggests it could be hidden ice ugly at any minute. I dropped my last passenger off at the foot of her hill because no fucking way was I taking my car up that and the pedestrian was was safer for her than my car out of control into traffic would have been. Pulling out of the lot where I dropped her off, I hit my first ice patch and the country length block home and my complex parking lot were the most dangerous part of the trip even though the visibility was better as I kept finding black ice under the snow. I learned to drive in snow country and still have the right instincts so it was fine, but I am not leaving the house again until it clears, which sucks as I have meds to pick up and EBT cleared today and I had things I need to get, but I will manage.
It isn't that cold. When I took my friend to fetch the take 'n bakes I didn't bother with a coat as it was what I consider comfortable chilly. My coat was a little heavy for the cold on the taking people hope loop, and I went out barefoot to put the guest chair back on the patio where it lives. My snow country instincts insist it's not cold enough to last, but the weather here has been strange the last 3/4 of a decade with climate change messing up our wind patterns, so things are less predictable.
* I've been rewatching All the President's Men. You would think I'd seen this movie often, but I was born not that long before Watergate and growing up in the '70's, one was apt to find Watergate exhausting. It is hugely important, of course and shaped so much that came after, but I am at the educated person who pays reasonable attention to history and politics level here. I'm an Xer; not a Boomer. So I didn't get around to watching it until the mid 90's, at which point the movie, like the scandal itself was something with historical importance, but not pressing or all that relevant beyond the longer reaching influences and resulting changes to law and the whole movie histor angle. It was interesting and well made, but not viceral and immediate the way it was to the original Bicentenial year audience.
Watching it now, I have way too many emotions to properly write about. It has it's original power back, I think, and beyond that a strange nostalgia to a time when journalists actually asked tough questions (there are exceptions, but it's rare now), to when long form reporting and long term investigations were something that news outlets could afford and actually funded (There are exceptions, but shrinkingly few and soon to be fewer with the rise of Sinclair media and deregulation). To a time when 1/3 of the electorate lives in a fact and reality free zone. To a time when people actually gave a fuck whether the president was a crook or not, or at least enough of them to matter.
I suppose I should rewatch Frost/Nixon soon.
