As usual, my policy is to wait for actual information instead of letting assumptions and prejudice run ahead of what is known. Mistakes in this area can do a lot of harm. My policy is also not to name shooters because glamorizing these cowards only encourages more. My focus is, as always, on the victims. This is where the focus ought to be. So many were injured and killed. They and their families deserve the attention, not the waste of skin who did this.

* The Masters and Johnson Cavett interview is genuinely fascinating and not something I saw as I child, though my mother occasionally referenced it. I wonder if it played a role in my Mother's relaxed acceptance of me. She was sex positive, body positive, pro-choice just generally at least since her late teens, but I wonder if exposure to intelligent, educated people speaking clinically about equality between types of sexuality and genders helped her make a leap that was so much more of a struggle for my father. She was exactly the sort of person who would take Masters and Johnson and Kinsey's word over societal prejudice. (My father's context was a huge element in his struggle there. He was a working class Jersey boy born early in WWII. I remember him and his BFF talking about how shaken they were at seeing Superman kiss Michael Caine. He worked really hard at fighting the prejudices instilled in him as a child, along with certain things from his personal history, and he hated the irrationality of some of his reactions. This didn't stop him periodically losing his shit over my dating life or the screaming fights we occasionally had over AIDS and AIDS policy in my teens. It was if I had been perfectly designed to push certain of his buttons just by going around being me. Don't worry, things worked out, it just took a bunch of adjustment and work on his part). My mom, being observant, realized I was some variety of queer round about when I figured it out when I was about the age of three or four. She didn't guess the right labels or the complexity of what she was looking at, but she was in the right ballpark and not particularly surprised when things were adequately explained to her. (Non-binary gender not having been something she was exposed too).
Something I particularly appreciate watching the interview is how careful they are to underline that laboratory conditions are never going to be the same as privacy in one's own home conditions and the limits of their research method. I am also just really liking Virginia Johnson as a person. One can really see how essential she must have been to the research as far as convincing people to participate, diplomacy with authorities, and explaining the work.
Unfortunately, they are on the side of nurture over nature for orientation and rather gender binary essentially. I think Masters is confusing expression of sexuality (what specifically one enjoys in bed) with orientation(what gender or genders a person is attracted to). Masters really does seem to confuse sex and gender. Sigh. At least the bisexuals aren't invisible to them. It was nice to see Johnson speak of the damage treating homosexuality as pathology does to people, but I have a lot of frustration with the limits of their world view, and I'd like to see the evidence for people learning orientation. I was strongly unidirectional as far back as I can remember, which is a pretty long way. Just saying. Also, it's 1979 for fuckssake talk to some trans people. Cavett's wording is wince making, but at least he's challenging them on the no one is born that way hypothesis. It was good to see them strongly against conversion therapy and insistent that homosexuality is a natural sexual expression. It's a mess, but it could have been so much worse.
