* I dragged myself out for forage and errands (masked, of course, made more annoying by Columbus Day, which shouldn't be a Thing anyway, and smokers. I won back or parking from and able bodied person who'd been hogging it all weekend, but Squirrel's been using my car again, so I suspect we've just lost it again, since this is his game night. After I put things away, I did some bits and bobs in the garden that needed doing. I also changed a tank and a box, and tried to replace three wraps on my left hand. i think the adhesive on this batch is badd also, as the thumb one started to come up before the clear polish dried. I really, really need to do more auction things as I'm falling further and further behind.

Still, there is something about the Gothmas decorations that makes everything better. I am a sucker for dead things and pretty lights.

* Enough time has passed that I decided to rewatch Lost Boys, which I loved when I saw in theaters and which I watched a lot in the '90's as we had it on VHS. There is no way to convey to anyone much younger than me how exciting this movie was hen it came out. lots of people have copied that long crane shot over water to convey the PoV of Vampires in Flight, but in '87, this was new and exciting. The "People are Strange" montage captures that exact moment where, punk and metal aesthetics started to spawn real Goths. The iconic looks of the Vampire clan were very of that moment, and the humor was exactly our sense of humor as teenagers about the same age Micheal was meant to be. So much of this movie is a time capsule of that particular slice of time, and still carries for me the sense memory of sitting between my lovers to watch it. The Autumn of '87 was such an action packed time for me, and everything going on right now in the world has it in the front of my mind. I have shivers watching certain sequences
for reasons I can't exactly explain that have to do with layered memories of various times and people I've watched this with. I've no idea how it holds up for people watching now the same age I was then. It still works for me, it seems.

* Please, please, please if you can manage it, contact your Senators to get them to fight the Kavanaugh nomination. This is geometrically more important if you have a centrist Democrat like Joe Manchin, Doug Jones, and Heidi Heitkamp (Donnelly and Tester are now no on Kavanaugh. If you are a constituent, consider thanking them for doing the right thing.); or Republicans like. You may want to contact Chuck Schumer and ask him to whip the Democrats so as to get them to stand in united opposition. If you have Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, Bob Corker, Jeff Flake, Susan Collins, or Lisa Murkowski, please keep calling to ask them to vote no. Jeff Flake, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski remain the best bets, so please keep the pressure on them! Flake and Murkowski have joined the Democrats in demanding an FBI Background check, and the FBI now has a week to investigate the allegations, so there is still time to make your voice heard!

* Re: Kavanaugh's calendars. Admittedly, I'm a bit younger, so high School was '84-'86, but the tech was the same. Excluding things like school dances of which I attended a total of three including less than an hour at Senior Prom, my calendars didn't show any of the parties I went to. Oh, you'd get work/sports/enrichment scheduling, but for the sort of parties where people were drinking? My boys would be like: Hey! There's a party after work or tonight or whatever. And I'd be like: Sure. Why don't I drive. (This was because I didn't drink or smoke and that way I could make sure my knuckleheaded friends/lovers would get home okay.) Why the fuck would I, an intelligent teenager, be leaving evidence lying around my parents house that I was about to be at a party where everyone else was going to be plastered and or high as fuck? And half the time they'd be telling me night of in person anyway and my calendar was at home because it was the '80's and calendars were all paper.

Anyway, my point is, as someone who was a teen in the time period before the World Wide Web and when cell phones were huge, just phones, and only for rich assholes, I find it way more likely that any drunken parties he was going to were word of mouth than otherwise. Just saying. like I never once saw one of my friends or one of the very Kavanaugh like assholes at my school whip out a physical calendar and write down when and where they planned to get drunk that weekend.

For Scott and Rubio emphasize Kavanaugh's racism and support for racial profiling, for Collins and Murkowski emphasize the right to chose, the nominee allegedly having attempted to violently rape someone, and the Jane Doe case where he tried to force a raped immigrant teen to carry against her will, With Murowski, you might also mention his opposition to programs benefiting Alaska Natives). Jeff Flake of Arizona may be softening! Please, if you are from Arizona, keep the pressure on! Contact Chuck Schumer and ask him to whip the Democrats so as to get them to stand in united opposition. It wouldn't hurt to demand your Republican Senators call for a proper FBI Background investigation. They won't, but pressuring them shows them there might be consequences.

* Livia's no good very bad day: It started out fine. The Imperial couple realized I was bathing before bed and sensibly retired to my room for pre-Bedtime naps. I found them there: her cradled on the body pillow up near the head of the bed, him making a comfortable donut at the foot, just waiting for me to come to make him a leg mest for the real bedtime. They were so comfortable that thee was no milling about when I got into bed. Everyone had their back stroked and when back to dozing while i did things like reconfigure pillows and take the just beore sleep meds. I read a couple of chapter of Ms. McGuire, then I turned off the light. Tavy climbed on to my legs in expectation of hours of stillness. Livia pressed very gently against me. Peaceable Kingdom achieved. Minutes later? The phone.

It was the management company wanting to do an emergency fire inspection. This is no surprise. Last Spring the alarms all started going off when Squirrel showered if he forgot to turn on all the fans. I called, but nothing came of it and I did not want to press too hard as they might charge us for it instead of fixing it. We changed all the batteries and it happens less often, and it's yet another inconvenience we've had to learn to live with. Last Thursday it went off because I made pasta, even though the hood fan was on, which means the one right in front of my room with the brand new battery is now doing it too, in response to ordinary amounts of steam. Apparently every time the alarm goes off here to punish us for showering and cooking, it triggers something at the management company office. It's been getting way worse, so i bet it's happening all over my floor, the detector system all being the same age. Apparently the flashy lights went off so often this past week, they've decided to stop ignoring it.

So emergency fire inspection today, with a minimum one hour warning, but more likely in the afternoon. Somehow, the cats did not scatter despite the phone, and were still there when I was done warning Squirrel he had to clean his room for inspection Right Now. They did scatter in terror when he jiggled his dector to make sure it was properly seated after the last time he had to pull it when itwouldn't stop screaming about him taking a shower. Good bye peacable kigdom, hello hiding closet for cats. They called with a two hour afternoon window, which I went to inform Squirrel of. I cleaned the mess on the kitchen floor made by him taking out the garbage the night before. (This is fine and not a complaint. He does the carrying and lifting because I can't without seriously endangering myself. I clean because I'm the one notices what needs cleaning and knows how best to do it. I'm also the one with the list of cleaning supplies in my head and who knows what we have and what we need to buy next month. This division of labor is agreed on and very, very logical, being based on who is good at what. So again, not a complaint). I go back to bed and set the alarm so I will for sure be wearing trousers as they are like to hit us very early in the inspection window. I do get some crappy, interrupted sleep, and the beasts do eventually come back to the bed.

I get the clothes on and am lying there in the dusk of my room on an Autumn afternoon trying to decide if I should read or try to nap when they come. The Imperial Couple hides in the closet from the Strangers. Tavy will stay on the bed if the voices are familiar, but these were not voices he recognized, so from the perspective of the Cats, we were being Invaded by Cat Eating Trolls, some of them in Kitty Stomping Work Boots. *shudder*

I told them the saga of the smoke detectors. They decided they battery units need replacing, but the flashy light thing is probably fine, since it was getting triggered by the assholish detectors. They say they'll get back to me, likely with better warning. I went back to bed, talking in the comfort voice, so the cats would know it's over. Tavy came right out and got his pettin and went back to sleep in the leg mest. It took Livia several chapters to venture out for her pettin and her nap on the body pillow.

I missed forage of course, having opted for several hours of crappy sleep over getting dressed right then and going out. I had meant to go get meds, but I couldn't bear to disturb the beasts so soon. I did end up going for the library loop and to see if that case I ordered beginning of the month was ready to be picked up. It was not. Sigh.

I am worn thin like a tiny bit of butter on too much bread. The cats have mostly recovered from sirens and strangers, though there has been a degree of understandable extra cling. LM has been roaming the house between naps, cursing at kittens these days and soaking up short pettins. I suspect I will be low energy, but I will make an effort to address the latest firehouse of horror spewing out of D.C.

* I am not enjoying the series finale of the United States of America at all.

* As it turns out, all three beasties are okay with distant fireworks, including the professional display, but the ones in the neighborhood definately distress the junior kitties and that thing where morters go off with out warning in our complex sends them barrelling away for cover in my room. Sometimes things go off 5-10 feet away from where they are napping, which they take for the end of the world. Still, it is much better than it used to be. We used to get up to a month of anticipatory explosions. LM did come out for a bit to be near a human when things were at their worst, but she's old and rather used to it. Whenever the barrage stops, my guys come for cuddles and go back to their normal activities, so it's more distress in the moment than trauma for which I am grateful.

I am still adjusting to Livia's weight. She seldom sleeps on my, but she likes to drape herself across me for biscuit making and pets. Tavy is a solid thing, but he's a TINY Terror. Hector was mostly fluff and bone his whole life. Mache was heavy, but there is more of Livia and the weight distributes differently. It startles me occasionally when she flops onto me, because it's been a half decade or so since i had a cat in her weight class and i've never had one her size. she is nearly a year old now and surprisingly graceful with it, especially for a kitten in an over sized adult cat body, so careful with her feet even barrelling at full speed. She is Queen of the soft paws. She got me three times by accident when we were playing the other day and left no mark. When she makes biscuits, she usually positions herself to knead a support pillow and when she doesn't it never hurts. She so gentle for something so large, and remarkably patient with Tavy, who is definitely the miles Vorkosigan of cats.

* So the official Republican justification for imposing tariffs on Canada is that the British burned down the White house in 1812 and therefore more than two hundred years later somehow Canada is now a threat as a result. O.o Canada was still a colony 214 years ago and historians think it was British troops not colonial troops and also did I mention it was 214 years ago? Like Canada has been our ally in a whole bunch of wars since then, so again I say: this tariff is illegal unless we are planning a shooting war with Canada in the very near future.

* The dentist was an extremely competent, polite, older gentleman; the hygienist, an Elder Goth like me. This is the last tooth as they found no new problems. (I have had a lot of bad experience with assholish older male dentists, hence my general preference for women dentists as they are are apt to listen. I am rather pleased that out of the four dentists I've had there, I have found no duds).

They now have serious security in place at Social Security. I arrived five minutes before open and got in the queue to sign in. The security guard was a sort of younger Shia LaBeouf who mumbled very softly, making the whole me being searched twice very awkward as I couldn't understand him half the time and he refused to speak even as loud as library soft. Imagine Marlon Brando mumbling under his breath. He objected to my key chain, so I had to take my keys back to my car and get searched again going in the second time. Why they hired a man who doesn't speak clearly to deal with a population of elderly people many of whom are hard of hearing I don't know. I barely got back in time to pull my ID out for my turn. It turns out they did not lie about my gender marker five years ago (It was almost the exact anniversary, turns out). Instead, the rather flustered lady who handled me half a decade ago missed a crucial step in the process, so they never posted across the whole Federal system, just the SS network. It took the nice lady today and bher supervisor about fifteen minutes to figure out, but from now on I won't have to loudly discuss my gender at length with Medical receptionists whenever I get a new receptionist, and when they send the new laminated Medicare cards, all my documents ought to match. Sigh.

When I got up in the evening, I did litters, prewashed dishes, did bathroom and kitchen floors, and enlisted Squirrel to help me lift things in the garden. (There are two of the heavy oblong planters I needed to switch, and one is awkwardly placed as that is where the sun is). It's ten times easier if someone stands on the other side to lift it out, after which I'm fine. I set it aside, he scootched a second planter over into thee first one's place, and he helped me lower in the third into the best spot for sun in the garden, where it needed to be. Then I reorganized five things into more appropriate spots for this particular month. Small space gardening is like that, lots of moving things around to make best use of what sun I have. Luckily the two heaviest containers are for partial sun plants and I doubt I'll need to move them in the next several years. I am really pleased with the asparagus. It is so tempting to harvest them as they are large enough this year, but I know you have to let them feather until there are enough to do both. Sigh.

* I left much later than I meant to this morning, as the cats were rather insistent and the car was dead again. I roused Squirrel and he kindly lent me his sponge braked behemoth and the last of his gas to see if we could sort out my tooth. It was not quite as alarming as it look when I had a mouth full of grit an three bits of resin filling in my hand, but it was bad enough to need repair. Two very nice ladies worked at it, the dentist doing lots of delicate work in between her explorations. I suspect from the shape it still isn't quite right, but she clearly got the bit that was causing the nerve to light up all the way to the ear. I was on empty by the time I got to the dentist, which made the drive home extra exciting on top of the brake issue, but I made it. This meant, of course no library, no forage, and no trip to get a bit of sandwich cheddar from the grocery near forage. Instead I came home, did a bit of neatening and weeding in the garden and went to bed to sleep off the Novocaine.

As I hadn't been able to nap before dentist, despite a good effort, I ended up reading the first half of the stunningly good Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson. Seriously, this thing is mesmerizing. 400+ years at least in the future, in pyramid city in what had once been Brazil, a young artist, her best friend, and his boyfriend, who isa Summer King from the poorest part of the city plot art and subversion all tangled up together. More like this please.

* For the record, the Alina Cojocaru Giselle blew me away. Her miming and face acting pretty much ripped my heart out, and her dancing was perfection: light and warm in the sunlit bits, heartbreaking in the mad scene, ethereal in the second act. I could not have asked for more. Giselle is Hard, and to make something so difficult requiring such an extreme level of control look weightless and disembodied? I have no words.

It is this one if you are curious: https://www.amazon.com/Giselle-Alina-Cojocaru/dp/B001E08TDA

Amians, Marseilles, Lisbon, MCR - I'm Not Okay

Camillo puts his hand on Tybalt's free hand while he speaks, listening quietly, ultimately nodding. "I will go with you one day if you wish," he says. "But I will not know what to say to anyone."

Tybalt brushes his lips against his cheekbone, "It will be fine, Luv. I would not take you even in Summer if I thought it wouldn't be." He kisses him again, soft and melting. After, fingers still twined with his Lemen's, he starts to follow the trail again, more careful of sleepy serpents this time.

* By the time I was teaching these were a thing. It was obvious to me it was as bullshit as those duck and cover drills. I mean, theoretically one could hide in the science rooms with the big massive teacher "l" desk with bunson burner outlets, but good luck trying to get the middle schoolers to shut up entirely for five whole minutes (since in any given group of 6th-8th graders some giggle in a tense situation and others make fart sounds or poke people to relieve tension and then every one has to complain about it and once one gets them quiet, you get a long tense pause of a couple of minutes and then someone makes a fart sound or someone starts complaining about who poked them or the like.), let alone the full length of the drill, and most of the rooms had those individual table style desks, so making kids duck and cover under them was pure security theater. No way would an active shooter be fooled by 35-38 middle schoolers not really fitting under their desks. It infuriated me that we were wasting their time and stressing them out for no reason I could see. (And yes, that last year when I was literally in the process of dying for the whole first term to the point that I wasn't expected to live until Spring unless my family could raise surgery money, I used to turn off my lights, draw my shades, and hide behind my desk during planning period and pep rallies, because I was in danger from passing out from the standing and walking whenever the kids were there and I never got caught, but I was alone and reading silently under there, not crouching half in the open with a room full of anxious 6-8th graders, just saying. And before you judge me, I was twice in a straight to the ER once I was allowed to leave work at the end of the day, and on the second of these occasions, I looked so bad by the end of Wednesday it freaked out the 7th Graders and when I wasn't there the next day a rumor started I had died and they were really upset and wildly relieved. Again, a couple months to live if we didn't raise surgery money by Christmas Break, wearing a Winter coat inside, clutching the podium trying not to sway or shiver bad enough for the kids in the front row to see enough to panic, really real dying). Anyway, we were shit out of luck, in pretty much any room I taught in a real situation, and anyway a student shooter would know the procedures from the active shooter drill like it said in the article. The kids knew it too and would complain about how useless it was. * TW: Rape. We need to talk about Neegan.

Look, I get it, Walking Dead Fandom, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is an extremely sexy guy. He's good looking, he has an appealing laugh, he moves in a particularly appealing way, he seems really comfortable in his masculinity when he's out of character, and it was delightful watching him flirt with Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show. Trust me, I Get It. You also have every right to ship whoever the fuck you want without being hassled or kink shamed for it. The thing I am about to say does not even a little apply to shippers. If loss of control fantasies are your thing, there is nothing wrong with that. Again, what I'm saying has 0% to do with shipping.

My issue is not with shipping, but with the Mainstream non-porn related discourse, mostly between straight cis men, which treats the Character Neegan as the moral equivalent of Rick. Look, I strongly dislike Rick and think he makes a lot of shitty decisions and don't think he's half the leader show!Maggie or Book!Michonne is or any Glen was, or example. At the same time? Rick never raped any one. Neegan? Has a rape camp in his compound. He forces woman to have sex with him and his lieutenant on pain of starvation, torture, or death. Canonically, the women in the rape camp tried to kill him in a recent season because he is their rapist. Whatever one can say about shitty straight white cis male leader on the Walking Dead show and their bad and good leadership choices, I can tell Neegan is the villain because he goes around murdering and torturing people and he has a rape camp. I have to side eye everyone making the argument that if Neegan had been the main character of Walking Dead from the start of the show we'd see him as the hero.

No. I wouldn't. I point again to the Rape Camp. No one regularly raping and women and causing them to be raped is a Good Guy. This is not a gray area. There are gray areas about say, whether a particular killing can be justified for the good of the group, for example. At the same time even weaselly, self agendaed, back stabbing Gregory didn't rape any one we know of. Sex in Alexandra, the Kingdom, Oceancide, and Hilltop is consensual as far as we've seen except for possibly in that one Domestic violence situation where I can't remember what all went on and they killed that guy. Just saying.

Neegan is a rapist, and any discourse claiming that really he's a good guy who is just misunderstood ignores the literal iron burns on that one guy's face and Neegan raping all those women. It ignores the murder of Glen. It ignores a couple of seasons of seemingly endless atrocities. So, no. Not redeemable. Not Misunderstood. Not the Good Guy.

Off the top of my head I thought of Seanan MacGuire's Wayward Children Series and Karen Healey's When We Wake and sequel, both of which have main cast trans characters and are generally diverse, but I'm blanking on one's in other genres and with Trans main characters. Anyone have good suggestions for books of any genre with quality trans representation that one can whole heartedly recommend?

* I know Librarians is meant to be silly and the last episode was pretty, but I am having some really big problems with their mythology. Humans had colour and creativity long before the Library of Alexandria was formed. I simply can't swallow that everything was dull, unimaginative and lifeless until a particular library was built in North Africa under a Macedonian Dynasty. It doesn't pass the smell test. There was a long history of art and literature in Meopotamia, Egypt, India, and China, before that first scroll went into it's cubbyhole at the Library. It's just... too big and patently false a nonsense to swallow. Also, I'd been side eyeing the Mediterranean civilization hegemony here. Shouldn't there be a counterweight library somewhere in, say, China or India, given the age and literacy of those civilizations? While travel from Western Europe to India was hard until relatively recently, there was thriving trade from Eastern Africa to Eastern Asia with the subcontinent as a hub. Could the library make doors to cities in countries not mentioned in it's tomes? How would librarians know to go there, wouldn't a second, waaaay older library make sense? What of the Americas? Would first Century north African or European Librarians be traveling to continents they had no idea existed? How could the Library have the level of influence alleged there? What of Australia, New Zealand, etc.? Again, completely unsuspected to the rest of the world until relatively recently. It is looking more and more like the oral tradition of the indigenous Australians may be alarmingly accurate further back than writing existed. How do oral traditions on that scale and civilizations that old with that much continuity fit into the world building.

I just... The library is too new and too geographically specific, and so much Art and literature and creativity existed before the Library of Alexandria was a thing, and it's gotten impossible to ignore this season what with the Librry's back story and effects on the world being too large and Universal. The Dark Ages were that super specific thing that happened in Greece when Mycenaean culture collapsed so thoroughly that they forgot how to write and suddenly the people trying to make ceramics clearly only vaguely knew how pots were made because nearly all the professional potters were dead. The European "Dark Ages" was a thing Early Modern Era historians did where they labelled everything they didn't like Medieval and Every thing they did like Renaissance and then labelled a big chunk of history the Dark Ages to contrast it with their own time which they labelled enlightenment. Yes, things got pretty chaotic for a while in particular spots in Europe, but even where things were pretty bad, people still wrote books, and civilization trundled on just fine in Ireland and the eastern Roman Empire, and pretty much the whole rest of the world. There was never any whole world dark ages, so that warring librarians catastrophe story makes zero sense from a World historical perspective. Occasionally a particular civilization or section of a civilization will crash and burn, but there has not yet been a world wide catastrophe. And again, take a look at how complex and colorful world art and literature are before the founding of the Library of Alexandria, so the causation does not make any sense and I couldn't stop worrying at it that whole last episode, which meant that it was hard to focus on what was on the screen.

It was better not knowing the larger show mythology, because everything crumbles when you do, like a meringue one has taken a hammer to. I get it, it's a silly show and not intended for thinking thoughts, but they've exceeded the suspension of disbelief, and I'm not sure I can get mine back after this season.

* TW: Pedophilia.

Long time readers will know, I have next to no interest in the personal lives of living celebrities beyond the who is and isn't Out list, and the things that are so bad that I will never give them another penny list. Luckily, with rare exceptions like Kevin Spacey, these lists hardly ever intersect. There are too many things in the world of actual interest to me to waste time on trivia that doesn't. Unfortunately one can't entirely insulate oneself from celebrity gossip, so things get through. More often, I am apt to pick up on little hints here and there in places like interviews and DvD extras/commentary tracks, the same way I pick up on hints socially so I know who to avoid in real life. (I came away from that long Oprah interview with Micheal Jackson in the first half of the '90's with the distinct impression he was a pedophile, though I couldn't prove it, and the allegations only started a year or two later). Like a lot of "naturals" I learn to trust and hone my instincts early in the forge of serious danger. I don't always know what specifically is wrong, but I am very good at spotting potential trouble.

I've been wary of Tarantino from pretty early on, based on nothing specific, just a hinky sort of vibe in interviews, and not just around race. Some part of me has been expecting an ugly revelation since I started seeing him in interviews after Pulp Fiction's release. I'd heard some vague rumors about his treatment of Uma Thurman around Kill Bill, but again, mostly insulated from celebrity gossip unless it is of particular interest to me and loud enough to reach me in my attempt to avoid lesser stuff about who is consensually hooking up with whom. I was sure of it when I came across the commentaries and extras on a library copy of Death Proof, where it was obvious that there was something fundamentally creepy about his interest in that nice Kiwi Stunt Woman. Again, nothing provable or overt, but enough to slide him onto my Creep list. Since then, I've been waiting for the shoe to drop.

It has, as far a I'm concerned. I expect more directly horrible things to come out at some point, but I absolutely believe Uma Thurman and the other women, and add what he did to her and the interview in which he full throatedly endorsed Roman Polanski's drugging and violent rape of a thirteen as acceptable and consensual.... I'm done. He's joining Roman Polanski, Mel Gibson, Woody Allen, etc. on my not another penny list. He is so disgusting to me, I'd love never to see his face anywhere again, which is unfortunately impossible.

I do not want him touching Star Trek. He would have been a bad fit anyway, but as far as I'm concerned he is beyond the pale and does not belong in a franchise that was meant to embody some of the best hopes for humanity. I will not watch any such films. There are plenty of directors who would do a much better job, more in line with what Star trek is meant to be. Don't let this pustule touch it, I'm begging you, Paramount. Hollywood, please stop hiring him.
