Apparently the disastrous Keystone pipeline is still on, but Justin Trudeau does believe Science and thus Global warming is a thing, so we'll have to see how their environmental policy plays out.
* I think "Kept us safe" should count for the whole Presidency, not 9/11 and is therefore bullshit, but even if you take Jeb Bush's conceit that W's responsibility for National security as President somehow only started on 9/12 and not with his swearing in, Jeb is still lying. Remember those anthrax attacks that happened after 9/11? I do. I had a special lesson plan about risk assessment I used to calm down panicky middle schoolers. George W. bush did not by any measure "keep us safe" in any objective sense. More people died under his presidency from terrorism than under any other president since the civil rights era (when domestic terrorism was widespread particularly in the South, but happened nearly everywhere). * I am so angry about the racist depiction of Cassandra and that there is now no chance of something to counteract it, that it's honestly hard to comment on anything else, but I do want to talk about my reading of 10K. I read him differently than this reviewer did, though my reading is also that the character has a lot of creepy misogyny in him. (Remember his fascinated reaction to the disgusting misogynistic zombie poll dancer show Murphy did first episode this season? I call it foreshadowing.) I think he had a crush on Cassandra. I do think her being reduced to a bestial shell of herself and a slave has had him furious all season, but not for the feminist and anti-racist reasons most of us have been horrified by. I think his motives are impure and creepy in that I think there was a strong element of if I can't have her no one will, and I also think that in previous episodes he kept hoping that somewhere under what Murphy did to her there was some part of her that loved him and he could play on that to bring her back. Only it failed. There was a moment.. last episode? the one before? I'm forgetting, where he tried to get her to respond to him and she rebuffed him. You could see him harden. I think it's the old awkward male teenager believing he is entitled to the body of a woman rape culture thing that often leads to mass shootings and other violence against women. you can not tell me 10K doesn't fit the profile. He likely thinks he is a nice guy and that he should get the girl as a result and I think the circumstances of what Murphy did to her lets him justify his killing of her and still tell himself he is a nice guy. I also think that his lack of affect has more to do with denial, PTSD (remember his history? It would be strange if he didn't have issues after having killed his father as a young boy and then surviving mostly alone and semi feral for a few years. you can't tell me Addie's the only one with PTSD here), dissociation, and his desperate need to fulfill the strong silent manly stereotype that had him picking 10k to replace his name in the first place. Look at him. He is trying so desperately hard to be the protagonist in a first person shooter. Remember his age when the apocalypse started and that he is literally too young to have seen porn (about which he expressed curiosity). He is assuredly a virgin. (I am not trying to imply that porn would provide a better archetype, just that he was pre-pubescent when the world basically ended and his idea of what a man is likely derives from media popular with boys that age. I also mean that we know he has a lot of curiosity about sex and sexual relationships, but no experience. We also know that he was fascinated rather than disgusted by the zombie sex slave strippers, all of which plays into the sort of profile you get for men who murder women because they completely understandably don't want to go out with let alone fuck creepy potentially violent misogynists).
I bet his archetypal image of what a man is comes from video games. He's adopted a first person shooter style ultra masculine persona because those games are about survival. Those games are generally laced pretty heavy with women as prizes and misogyny and general. So finally he meets a woman with no partner close to his own age and there was a certain element of rescue involved, so he thought, likely unconsciously: here is my prize. She did seem to like him. Then from his perspective Murphy snatches the prize away.
Except she is a human being and not a prize. Murphy stole her autonomy and reduced her to a barely sentient slave, but I think 10K has been objectifying and dehumanizing her in a more ordinary way. As far as I'm concerned I loathe them both thoroughly and I'm not sure my fondness for Warren and Addie and that impulse to stare at a bad car wreck can carry me past how much I loathe Murphy and now 10K. Because I'm pretty sure no one is going to call 10K on how fucked up it all is.
BTW, having Vasquez be undercover DEA with a family to avenge was a bit of a relief to me given that we are down to two Poc characters in the main cast. If it was going to be just Warren and an obvious villain on top of the catastropfuck with Cassandra.... yeah.
