* The cats objected to me leaving the bed Wednesday, but I still dragged myself out to forage, only to discover once there I could barely walk. Luckily? Cart to lean on like a walker. I went and got the thing I forgot anyway at the grocery, because I only had a day worth left and it's something that only comes from two stores and that's the cheaper one. Waiting at a light on the way home, I could feel a fever rising in real time.

Fever by itself, like most symptoms of illness can mean anything, since they are individually also symptoms of my chronic stuff. This fever had the blurry, queasy edge that means pathogen to it, especially since I have enough other stuff going on that I'd been considering pathogen as a possibility. I think it's also why the Imperial couple have been trying so hard to keep me in bed. Tavy is clever that way, particularly. Sometimes he's clingy because he's clingy, but he's always clingy when I'm sick. I cold feel my lungs deteriorating the whole way home and through unpacking. Luckily, I scored two meals worth of the soft pretzel roll things that are perfect for sick stomachs at forage.

Today I am driving friends and furniture, but that's my only commitment until Saturday. Note to Self: Mask today.

* Thing I learned in the last week: I’ve been looking at pictures of Eunuchs my whole life without knowing it.

* Today I dragged myself awake with plenty of time to go forage, despite hardly any sleep. I managed to arrive exactly a minute late due to too much cat petting. I DID rescue a stranded homeless lady about my age, go to the library, and blow nearly all the rest of the month's food allotment on small things at the grocery outlet. It was not by any measure a win. Plus I have a first thing in the morning dental appointment Wednesday, which dramatically lowers my chances of having forage spoons in the afternoon. Sigh. At least I managed to read half of the Mad Princes and watch all of call Me by Your Name so the next person could get it promptly yesterday. * I was watching part of the Yves Saint Laurent biopic from a couple of years ago over lunch. It got to the scene where they were negotiating with the Americans via interpreters, and I wandered off into the kitchen to clean up lunch and change out a fly strip. I had this strange feeling of rightness, and then it dawned on me, I was half half listening in two languages while tidying up bowls and such. * Containment: Look, I know it's a made up disease and also I'm not an epidemiologist, though I am a life long plague watcher. Either the authorities in this show have to be lying about the "48 hour quarantine" or the writers are not making sense. How do I know? You need at least two full life cycles of the disease since the last person is cured or dead for diseases like ebola. Given how fast and deadly this bioweapon is meant to be, I'm betting they'd want a lot longer. Even best case scenario (no one has it now and no one new is infected in the 48 hour time span they project, no reputable public health authority would lift the quarantine at that point. I saw that for the second episode they amended "100% fatality" to 100% so far, which is an improvement, but I'm still side eyeing the original statement given the sample size. I've got some fundamental questions about the disease design, which I'm willing to let them hand wave by it being not a natural mutation, but I'm still bothered by the contagion being all over that family's home, and who else did they come into contact with. How can they be sure they completely sanitized that house? I also want to know a lot more about the bioweapon design part. For weapons to use against an enemy, governments generally choose something either very contagious, but that you can immunize your own people against/treat if your emergency services are prepared (like small pox), or something very deadly but with a lower R after initial release (like anthrax). Super contagious and deadly and on a viral vector that spreads the way flu spreads? That's an out right Doomesday scenario. Not kill the enemy and maybe some of the releasing side die too, but they inherit the earth type stuff, but everyone dies. for that you'd need very good microbiologists who want the world to end and likely level 4 containment equipped labs. It's a terrible idea, and the quality of equipment they'd need and high quality willing scientists and money means I have questions about having all of those things in one place. This besides my serious questions about the show writers hints as to origin and this their underlying political agenda. I also have other questions, like, they know in episode 2 what they are dealing with and late stage patients will infect people aggressively. Why doesn't the cop have proper hood and gloves by now? Why are they letting him handle potentially infectious people and objects with his porous leather cop gloves instead of disposable gloves, preferably in two layers as one uses for a serious hemorrhagic? Fuck is going on at the CDC that they don't know basic infection prevention protocols? And these are just the ones off the top of my head. I know, it's all nitpicky, but it bugs me. I'm an amateur. I'd love to know what pros think.

I loved the dancing and the backstage business with the ensemble talking and prepping, but I the actually plot with "The Kid," his sister, and Mike's courtship of her was like watching paint dry. I'd heard so many good things about the sequel, particularly feminist analysis of it, that given the chance to watch it free, I gave it a shot. OMG! It was all the good parts with the boys backstage as an ensemble, hot dancing, and somehow managed to be every bit as feminist as I was promised despite most of the main cast being male. It was really respectful of woman, was inclusive of body types and women of various ages, and the new African American characters were kick ass. I'd love to see them foregrounded if they make another sequel. This is the movie I wanted to see the first time, although I would still like more gay and/or bi male inclusion. (There was LGB inclusion this time and possibly T, depending on how that one person identifies, but I'd like to see it more woven in, if that makes sense). This was so much better and i had a fine time watching.

* I’m going to reiterate my belief that Billy Bones and Flint is endgame, whatever happens with Silver. What would I best like? Threesome. But I’d not wager a groat on it. I’m still in the Billy doesn’t know exactly what he’s feeling and he’s deeply conflicted about that and the whole Gates murder issue. I think there is going to at some point be a confrontation that turns physical that ends in a kiss, though I could be mistaken as to circumstance. I will not venture a guess as to timeline. Flint/Bones just makes sense character wise, narrative wise, and fits with treasure Island, because that’s a good way to get from here to there. I’ve always thought so, but particularly strongly since Billy’s return in season two.

Silver/Flint may or may not be a tease. I’ll be disappointed if it is, but I won’t be angry unless they never give us Flint/Bones either. To me the Vane/Eleanor level mess that Silver/Flint would be is very much a thing I’d like to watch. Hell, I’d love if it paralleled that particular kind of love and war vibe they had, preferably with the same degree of explicitness, but I want Flint/Bones for the end game because anything short would feel like a cop out.

Her refusal to put out her cigarette was the reason he decided to arrest her for assaulting a police officer. I am no fan of second hand smoke, being a lung patient, but it sure didn't look like assault to me. I also still think it is wildly unfair that you can be charged for resisting arrest because the officer did not tell you you are under arrest. Was she supposed to read his mind? He had told her specifically that he was citing, not arresting her, yet he starts screaming at her about not getting out before he tells her he's arresting her and he refuses to tell her that he is arresting her for assaulting an officer for smoking in her car. I still think they should be legally required to tell you they are arresting you and why.

Yes, people used to think that, but archeology has come a long way since then. The only way you'd have gotten lead poison from the water is if you were drinking out of the sewage pipes in preference to water fountains, which is pretty fucking illogical. Romans were extremely careful about keeping feces out of their drinking water in a way that Westerners in general weren't again until the mid to late 19th century. (The Chinese and the Japanese figured out municipal sanitation early in their respective development and maintained it as they went on to make bigger and bigger cities. If you had a choice between drinking water from the 16th century from any city in any country in Eurasia, pick one from Japan or China. I'm not kidding. It's part of the reason the average survival rate for an English family in English cities was 3 generations from arrival to totally wiped out). * I think Machiavelli is pretty seriously misunderstood, in part because hardly anyone reads his Discourses on Livy, and in part because most people don't read the Prince carefully. As a result they tend to miss things like context and nuance. He was a patriot who's city state was under constant threat by invading armies. From the Discourses, it's pretty obvious he'd have been happier in a Republic, but his choices were a Princedom or in a subject state. Under those circumstances a strong local ruler with a well run city state was the better choice, hence the Prince. If you read carefully, you'll notice that he favours the people over the nobles and justice where it's possible. He's a pragmatist, though, and picks better over the worst when the best isn't a choice. Don't get me wrong, he says some pretty horrible things, but he also thinks it's a good idea to feed your people and use a citizen army over mercenaries, and a lot of his advise is quite sensible.
