* The first two white lilies bloomed yesterday. They are massive and smell amazing. The lobelias have been joined by a bunch of the salad greens and herbs that are flowering just now. The result is rather lovely in a wildflower sort of way. I went on grocery run not long after dawn, while it was still cool out. I bought about 40.00 more than I should have. There will be no fixing my shoes unless I sell more ebay after all. After I put everything away, ate, and did lungs, I did a bit of work in the garden, re-potting some things and shuffling some others as various things need more or less light. I might reshuffle again a bit tomorrow as I'm not entirely satisfied. My fever is much lower today, but I'm still sleeping in random five hour shifts, headachey and generally crap. * Look, if you've looked over the facts of Mumia's case in any sort of objective way, odds are high you think he's innocent. Also, an important founding concept of the United States is that people are innocent until proven guilty and that the accused deserve a vigorous defense. It infuriates me that defense attorneys are attacked as being out right evil for doing the important and necessary job of defending the accused. Yes, that includes folks working for the NAACP, ACLU, and the Innocence Project who sometimes try to help people who are convicted under seriously fishy circumstances when there is strong evidence that they are innocent. Having proved in court that someone's constitutional rights were violated, thus saving their life should not be a bar to becoming a judge. It is thankless work, but Debo Adegbile did that.

In any case, it's likely the real problem that blocked his confirmation is that he is a hero who has fought tirelessly for the right of ordinary people to vote against Republican attempts to restrict the vote to wealthy white people. Republican Propaganda organ FOX "News" has been whipping up right wing hate over the Mumia case becauser that plays much better than attacking him for daring to say poor people, People of Color, and College Students should have the right to vote as citizens.

* The average age of minimum wage workers this country is 30. I keep seeing Republicans claiming that these thirty year olds are teenagers and therefore don't need a living wage. After all, teenagers of the young age of thirty don't have rent or bills or families to support. Most first graders know that 30 is bigger than 19, the oldest age that is still in the teens. My feeling is that any adult who can't do first grade level math has no business setting economic policy for a country given the role of math in things like economics and setting a budget. Just saying.

* I see Republicans are claiming that Republicans forcing the sequester because they like to pretend the imaginary debt crisis is real is somehow the President's fault. They are also claiming that cutting back military spending even a little is unprecedented even though we always have dramatically cut back military spending after every single previous war except Iraq II. Why let reality get in the way of rhetoric, after all? I see they are demanding we starve military families by taking away their EBT/SNAP food stamps so as to use that money to keep us on a War footing so they can randomly invade more countries as they've been demanding for well over a decade. They insist that starving the children of active duty soldiers is "supporting the troops" while feeding their children is bad for America. Riiiiight.

* Today there was not nearly enough sleep. Oh, I tried to go to bed at a reasonable hour, but I dropped the good DvD player, and ended up spending an hour prying it open to fix it and putting it back together. The good news is it was fixable. I just needed to pop it open, extract the trapped DvD, unscrew an interior cover, pop the tray back into place, and close it all back up. Of course Hector freaked the fuck out. He's been having particularly bad nightmares what with us losing his Mache cat, and he's really clinging to his rituals. I looked like I was going to bed, and then I didn't. He committed everywhere, which I discovered by stepping in a puddlew when I went to put the screwdrivers away. I cleaned myself and the floor, medicated Hector, and went to put more bits and bobs away, discovering another puddle with my foot.

I had just got into bed when Squirrel got back from work. He wanted to try out his new slow cooker, but is very new to cooking, so I put on pants and showed him how to make baste, donating some of my veggie broth and herbs. I know nothing of crock pots; I grew up poor, so my cooking is very old school equipment and making from scratch, but I know all sorts of basic things including meat stuff that I never use for myself, but can remember in a pinch when cooking for others. Squirrel's tastes are very simple, so I did a basic garlic and herb set up, but his meat with two veg (not a euphemism) smelled right when I got back from my collection of small errands I was doing and he said it tasted good. I'm so happy for him learning to cook.

I managed to zombie out of bed in time to do a list of small errands I wanted to do before I left town tomorrow. My shelving arrives Friday. Two of the errands were a fail, as one clearly requires a second pair of hands, and the other one involved finding a business I hadn't been to in it's new location and the map was vague enough that I simply couldn't find it and didn't have time to keep searching. (Either the business was no longer there and the Internet map out of date, or their signage sucked. It was dusk and the signs that weren't lighted were hard to read. Both are possible). I missed making a phone call before leaving, it being to late by the time I achieved enough control to be moving around. I succeeded at another when I got back. I achieved three errands including ordering the shelving, and dropped two errands off the bottom for it being time to turn over the car to Squirrel for his game night. Now starts the moving of boxes to make room for shelves, the organizing of directions, and the packing up of an overnight bag for tomorrow's mission. I am already tired.

* For the record, I really like the Arthur Darvill as Mephistopheles version of Marlowe's Doctor Faustus. It is beautiful and exactly the right level of stylized for my taste.

* This place often gives the impression of being haunted. It isn't, it's just a confluence of mundane things that can create an eerie effect. There are the strange gurglings and rumbling in the walls caused by water in the pipes and other people's appliances. The higher tech appliances make different sounds than I am used to including the sound of ice moving in the ice maker. The cats' claws move over laminate, which is different than the sound on hard wood I grew up with. They vigorously scoot food bowls across the floor as they eat, a strange, rhythmic sound. Hector rooting through garbage or knocking things off counters sounds like a grumpy poltergeist or phantom, some noisy but invisible roommate banging about the kitchen. And then there are the effects of shadow and light. For the last month, I'd catch changes in light behind me in the kitchen area, a sudden movement of shadow or an unexpected darkening. It turned out to be a light bulb failing and changing in intensity as it heated up and hector knocking a low fixture temporarily askew. The white curtains on the windows lead to some odd light effects as people pass briefly between sun and window. My Zombie Apocalypse shower curtain that now covers my bedroom door gives some fascinatingly creepy shadow images: Squirrel like a well fed Nosferatu lurks slowly past on his way out the door, Hector moving on the bed and jumping down make monster shapes. It is not haunted, but it gives that impression.

I like it.

I like opening my eyes to all that bright cheerful blue. I am still always disoriented for a moment on waking, but it will pass. My bed still makes me think of Princess and the pea, or islands, but I've ,mostly adjusted. I always did love heights, and my Mother built me a loft bed at some point in my growing up, so the height is a physical challenge, not a mental one.

We have reached the point in the move where there isn't much point in unpacking much more without the shelving. I've got some small stuff to do while I wait, but things are on the downhill slope towards done, and this is home, even with the terrible tub.

* Revised plans for Tuesday: I have a Doctor's appointment here. When I'm done, I catch a bite to eat, then drive down to Renton to find the clinic. I then drive further South as Captain Havoc has kindly offered entertainment and crash space. Thanks, Havoc! In the morning I do my informed consent gatekeeper appointment.

* The curtain hanging turned into a massive drama. All but the thinnest drill bit heads disappeared in the move and it turned out we really needed a drill for starting the screws in the hard wood frames. I bought new drill heads; they turned out to be the wrong size. Luckily they let me exchange them for a single drill of the right size and a ,lighter. (They were going to credit the extra back to my card, but it was so small as to be silly and I always need lighters). It looks like the proper ones work fine in the bedrooms. The sheer ones I bought because there were no solids left work okay with lining, but the one over the door is less aesthetic so I'm leaving the broken ass shade down. Let's hope they won't demand a different set of curtains.

* Hector figured out something was really wrong when Mache wasn't in her spot at treat time. Mache was always in her spot at treat time, and after she would always curl up with me for bed time pets. The ritual of doing tricks for treats calmed him enough for me to get a few hours sleep, but body did a brand new scary thing that ended up with me needing to hid in the bathroom for a while. By this time Hector was frantic. No Mache; Human sick; world ending! He spent the whole rest of the sleep cycle trying to get me to come help him look for her. I have no way of conveying to him that she's not coming back. Normally, when a cat is dying the clowder sits vigil. Certainty, they knew she was sick, but she was such a tough little thing. She rest up and then try to look as healthy as possible when she was out of bed. I don't think he realized how bad things were with her and he doesn't seem at all prepared.

What I really want right now is a cat to cuddle with, but neither of the white cats is good at this sort of thing. (LM likes shot, sitting next to you pettins, and Hector needs to be mellow to cuddle. It's hard to curl up with a semi-hysterical birmin who is pointy on five out of six ends.)

* It's rule of three time: Child Star Edition.

I'm going to get real about the Judio-Claudians for a minute, while putting Nero in context. TW from here on: ) To be clear, I'm not excusing Nero, just putting him in his context and drawing a parallel with modern people with smaller scale but similar backgrounds and resources. Teenagers can be incredibly destructive even with much less in the way of resources. Putting a teenager with that level of entitlement plus that level of exposure to real life violence as entertainment in charge of a whole government with a massive amount of wealth, and all the adoration and sex partners he could want, and little or no consequences for the violence he perpetrates.... The surprise would be if you got a decent human being and/or ruler, not that you'd created a monster, because it would take a whole lot of luck, and an unusually strong and ethical character for that teenager to turn out well.

Now smaller scale it again to look at child celebrities whether it's actors or rock stars. They often come from messed up backgrounds. (Not all of them, but you'll notice the ones with reasonable families who do things like keep them in school and set reasonable limits have a way better chance of being reasonable adults). They are surrounded in a bubble of amazing privilege and if they are really popular there is often a ridiculous amount of money waiting for them when they come of age. If they keep working through the teen years they are often forced by the nature of their work to maintain a publicly squeaky clean image that makes rebellion unsafe and their lives are subjected to the sort of constant scrutiny that quite frequently destroys adults. They are doing all this with little emotional cushion and often very little in the way of reasonable parenting or healthy adults around them, very few people to tell them a hard no, and plenty of temptation, all of it in a fish bowl surrounded by paparazzi. Now that kid comes of age and is completely free of all parental control with full access to all that wealth and plenty of connections that can get zim anything ze wants for a price and the adoring fans will cheer zim on.... Yeah. It may not be the whole wealth and power of the whole Roman Empire in one set of hands, but it's close enough to do serious damage to a whole lot of people who got famous as adults, let alone as children or teens. Again, the miracle really is the ones who make it out reasonably healthy and turn into decent and reasonably functional adult humans. I unironically applaud the ones who manage it, because decent and reasonably functional as adults is more than hard enough for the rest of us not dealing with all that extra pressure and temptation. Hell, I applaud anybody who manages it.

Again, this isn't an excuse for terrible behavior and particularly terrible behavior that harms or threatens to harm other innocent humans going about their business. I think both we and they would be better off if we started piling on the limits and consequences when they are younger instead of letting them get away with pretty much anything until the damage is so great to themselves and everyone around them that it's near impossible to make right. I think the children of the rich and celebrities in general should get harsher punishments for things like drunk/stoned driving because this might be their only limit they've ever experienced, because they could damned well have afforded a cab, and innocent people literally die because of this bull shit. Instead we do it the other way around and let them off with a slap on the wrist while the children of the poor get their lives ruined for stupid minor stuff that doesn't kill anybody. It seems to me the seventeen year old with a joint walking distance from his house who is no threat to anybody deserves the lecture and the second chance the child of privilege in the fast car who nearly kills, or hurts, or literally kills someone could maybe use some serious ass consequences. Better to draw them up short when it's only a handful of lives they are endangering than wait until they are in charge of a major corporation or a government and can do it repeatedly and possibly on the grand scale.

And yes, I'm not just thinking of one celebrity or child of privilege, but a whole lot of them, and yes, many of you have heard or read a version of this rant from m me before. I think it needs saying periodically.

* I was trying to take today fairly easy, as my arms and hands are still messed up from driving and I am tired. Most of the housework involved discovering and cleaning up cat messes. I also put together my stereo. The new component is as excellent as promised, though some of my equipment is too antiquated to hook up, but luckily it was secondary stuff I got free over the years and mostly use as back ups. The important pieces remain and now I can haz music.
