* The President of the CAR has resigned at a regional meeting intended to stop the violence, as a result of him not being able to put an end to it.

* I'm not going to get into military specifics in either country at this point, but the results are that the refugee crisis in both the Central African Republic and South Sudan continues to worsen as more and more civilians flee for their lives from the fighting.

* Rule of three time again. The brain is an organ. We do not expect people to justify their arthritis or will away a heart murmur. We do not stigmatize a broken leg. Depression happens. I think we'd all be better off if we stopped treating mental illnesses as somehow less legitimate than kidney disease. All this extra baggage makes it harder for people to get the help and support they need when they most need it. Let's not make things harder for people who are already using pretty much everything they have just to hang on, okay? Let's all try to be gentler to ourselves and each other.

* Today was a win one lose one sort of day. Greenwick started packing the kitchen; I worked on small stuff, bits and bobs in the bedroom and office. We went to let the bed guys in and unloaded some gear. While the men worked in my room, we worked on various projects around the new apartment. The washing machine works. I need to double check that the drier dried stuff. Greenwick did more cleaning and prep; I unpacked various things and put them away. The bed guys finished unnervingly fast, which turned out to be because it was the wrong bed. O.o Me: it was supposed to have drawers and a bookshelf and be made of wood. Them: You were the custom order with the all the cool little drawers? They loaded the wrong pallet on the truck! That's going to take two hours to assemble!

The mattress is mine and they said I can sleep on it, but I'm going to wait until Thursday to move across with cats and fish. They are coming back with my bed Wednesday. The plan is to take more of the kitchen across tomorrow before game. It's really fine. I honestly could do with another half week to get ready. I've also had a couple of out side the box thoughts on how to make the furniture work in the new space.

Meanwhile, conditions for the refugees are appalling, while the fighting making it hard for any food or clean water to reach them. * Today there was yet more bureaucracy along with the packing and housework. The thing I find particularly frustrating is that at the end of the night, one wouldn't be able to tell I've done any housework at all. The pile of things to leave gets bigger and more exhausting. I wish had more people to help as I am seriously worried we won't clear the mess in time for game Sunday. I've started moving things I don't like to be without in the hopes I'll be sleeping ver there Monday. My room and the bathroom are down to things that need to go with me or things I need to move later for particular reasons.

Tomorrow I've got more bureaucracy and errands. I can see the sleep time draining away. Saturday should be the bed and Greenwick and I moving stuff and unpacking stuff. Sunday, we hopefully move fish, with me and the cats following early Monday morning into the increasing chaos over there.

* There's a lot of foreign policy stuff I should write about at length, but sitting upright long enough to feed and hydrate is a whole lot of challenge just now. Short form for key events: 1. Remember those disputed islands between Japan and China? China declared it Chinese airspace and ordered the world to notify them if they were going to fly there. It's right on the flight path for a whole lot of Pacific rim airlines. Japan, US, and S. Korea are defying the notification rule and have flown over. It's getting ugly. 2. There are ongoing protests in Ukraine. It's looking like Putin strong armed the Ukrainian government and a lot of people are unhappy with that. There is also worry that the EU may be pissed that they backed out at the last minute. 3. Protests continue in Thailand, with protesters entering the army headquarters for a peaceful rally, after which they left. 4. In Egypt, the crack down on free speech and protests involves beating, sexual assault, and imprisonment of often young women in the hopes of intimidating women into being too afraid to participate in political activities. I am no friend of the Muslim Brotherhood, but I believe in free speech and the right of women of any political stripe to move freely and express opinions without fear.

I think it's important to look at the faces of people in the past. So often, people abstract people in other periods, as if they were all one thing, as if they were somehow less than we are because they had less technology and different options and experiences. When I see photos of 19th Century people, they become more real to me as individuals. It is harder to forget that they were individuals with feelings and experiences.

That goes a hundred times more for photographs like these. All that anger and strength and living through some of the worst things there are to live through on faces that could belong to a neighbor or the person in line with me at a super store. I think it's important to never forget that were are real people like us who hurt and loved and tried to survive.

* Fobok was kind enough to send me links rounding up various Canadian political scandals going on. I was so swamped this week it took a while to give them the proper attention. Here they are in case you are curious what else is going on besides the crack scandal.

Senate scandal (though there's hundreds of other news stories, this one covers the basics pretty well): http://ca.news.yahoo.com/harper-remains-mum-dealt-unfolding-expense-scandal-last-182111187.html

The robocalls stuff: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/head-elections-canada-confirms-witnesses-not-co-operating-175116320.html

and related: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/economy/economy-lab/will-omnibus-bill-influence-bank-of-canadas-independence-flaherty-should-explain/article12212675/

* What is it with me and my distress about the destruction of some of the manuscripts of Timbuktu and the threat that many others are in the process of crumbling away? I am not Muslim, I will never learn Arabic. These are words I'll never read, library after library, I'll never explore. Simply put, these manuscripts are irreplaceable. Windows to thoughts from the past and by extension into lives we'd otherwise never get a glimpse of. Timbuktu has a unique history and culture. It is incredibly comforting to know those precious manuscripts are there. Only they might not be much longer.
