* Note: Ali Velshi is my least favorite of MSNBCs current selection of substitute hosts for a bunch of reasons. He is currently covering for Rachel Maddow who is away on a long hiatus to work on other projects. I have no reason to think she's reviewing everything that is going on the air over there given how incredibly busy she is right now. If more information comes in suggesting she personally okayed everything in the 3/11 broadcast, I will reassess, but right now I'm working on the assumption that it's her bookers, research staff, etc., but that Ali Velshi is responsible for what he says and what goes out on the air.

Absent information to the contrary, I'm done with Ali Velshi, but reserving judgment on Rachel Maddow's involvement unless and until more information comes in suggesting she actually had some direct involvement.

* Thursday, I was dealing with a headache all evening, then had a bad fall trying to feed the Emperor. it wasn't his fault. he was patiently waiting in his feeding station. It was just one of those things where my body randomly stopped working at the wrong moment. I yelled because it hurt rather a lot. Tavy and Livia are very bad with loud noises so him taking off like a shot was no surprise at all. So I'm on the floor, trying to assess if I broke any toes, and untangle myself from some furniture I took down with me when I'm surprised by a really loud and emphatically concerned "Mao!" at my elbow. He hadn't fled to hide in his room, he'd run around the back of the right side desk/shelving in the office area to see if I was okay. He was scared, but he was way more worried than scared for himself, poor button. For all his faults, he really is a sweet little guy.

I damaged a bunch of toes and several are swollen, but the only one I'm really worried about is the center right. Ironically, the fragile toe,the one that I break several times a year, is just fine. none of the toes snapped in half, which is good, and I'm not getting that nasty all too familiar bone grinding, so I'm calling it a win. I'll likely have a better idea tomorrow how fucked the toe is, but it's defiantly not medical attention level fucked. (I only take toes to the doctor when they snap in half or obviously need stitches or the like).

* When Head Millennial was over last Wednesday I did the thing I often do where I offer two things they could make for my dinner and let him pick which one. Usually it's one simple thing for if they have worn themself out and a more complicated or labor intensive option for if they're up to that after they've done the other stuff on the list for the day. In this case, I've been having the kind of cravings that suggest low grade deficiency, so the easy option was a protein thing and the other option was high in vitamin C and good for depleted electrolytes. I mentioned why it needed to be one of the two nutritionally. They insisted on making both, which is fine since I could eat the bocas while they started the sauerkraut and sweet biscuits and I could just reheat that sucker later for second meal, which I totally did. (They also prepped a salad with vegetarian friendly protein in it, knowing I would finish it with artichoke heats fore electrolytes. head Millennial is a super star.)

I mentioned before that the big cooking bible is full of handwritten notes and glosses from various of my family members including me, and that we generally translate the recipes with certain standard substitutions we generally don't bother to write in. This is why I am still using the stained, battered, and falling apart original and not the replacement I bought over half a decade ago. I really need to sit down and transfer all the glosses across, but... Anyway, the glosses and corrections that aren't mine were written by dead family members, which is another reason I've been slow to transcribe it all across.

So Head Millennial grabs the recipe book, finds the recipe that the real recipe is based on, but keeps double checking the changes since neither my grandmother, mother, nor I ever bothered to write the glosses in because it was obvious to us what to change or add. But of course it isn't for the Millennial who's never seen, heard, or smelled this before the night he made it the first time. So I answer the questions, but after I'm like, "It's totally fine if you want to check with me every time, but you are also welcome to write in the recipe changes in pencil. Everybody does it." So the Millennial asked for the pencil, and started writing in the changes, and I'm like, you know you can write in the sauerkraut and water proportions too if you like. Which they eagerly did.

It was a huge relief to them. They can confidently do it themself if they needs to, which is very much how they likes to work. They are very bright and independent, and like me back when I was working like to know all the things. It wasn't until Thursday evening that it dawned on me, Oh! They were having extra emotions about it because they were writing in my family book. It didn't occur to me that it would be odd, as really, my relationship with them is very much like Gran's relationship with me was, only in this instance, I am Gran. (Gran was my Mother's Maternal Grandmother who lived to be a hundred. she was one of the many gender nonconforming family members on that side of my family tree. I was very close to her. She died at the end of my first year at College). Of course Head Millennial can gloss away all they like in the cooking bible: they are family. (One of the older Millennials often reminds me of how my Mother and Grammy were together, with me being Grammy, my Mother's Mother, in this instance).

It is so strange to me still after all this time. I never expected to survive this long. I almost didn't because of Herberton, the tumor colony we removed in my mid thirties. I never expected to survive to be a queer elder at all. I very deliberately never had or adopted kids. (Skye and I thought seriously about fostering older queer kids, but it didn't work out for a bunch of reasons). still, here I am replicating the extended family multi generational dynamics of my mother's side of the family, the mutual aid and care and fundamental warmth of it, only from the other side of the mirror.

* Some one pointed me to the finder site, Thursday night. I'd already checked it, which is how I discovered they were only tax preparing at a place without free close disabled parking, but I tried again anyway just in case and a bunch of other free tax preparer sites had popped up literally overnight. I was able to catch one of the slots at the place they moved the library site too about a decade ago that is super accessible and has disabled parking right in front. It's also big, high ceilinged and well ventilated. The COVID protocols were an improvement. They had appointment slots instead of randomly showing up and it taking four hours. Inevitably, they were a little behind and even the simplest filing (mine) with no taxable income (They don't tax SSI) takes about half an hour for whatever reason, but because of COVID protocols I got to sitt by myself in the waiting area reading instead of sitting with the preparer after the initial double check and paperwork handover.

Can I do my taxes myself? Yes, obviously, but reading tax rules stresses me out and it's worth it to me to sit around reading while someone else does it.

I've been going there since around the turn of the century, back when I still had income. (I file for identity protection and because sometimes bureaucracy wants a completed tax form). It's run by AARP and it's mostly retirees manning the stations most years. My Grammy, who was an accountant professionally, used to volunteer for this back east after she retired. I know the faces of most of the people who come back and do this every year. Half of them weren't there this time. I hope the plague didn't get them and they are just being cautious. They've always seemed such nice people and iut's a huge service they do every year. They only manned two thirds the usual number of stations for safety as well.

A young woman in her twenties did my taxes, the youngest person I'd ever seen volunteering. It was good that some young people were there volunteering, but I worry about all the people i didn't see. For the last couple years, it has been heartening to see the older library workers and volunteers still there. I always exchange greetings with the help desk guy. I was extra happy to see him today. I've seen two of the fix it guys at the library getting books in the last six months. I've been quietly worrying about them all pandemic. I hope the other fix it cafe people are okay, because they are all superheroes in my book, and most of them were retirees too.
