* I have often and emphaically said that the only things I want back from the '80's are things like asymetrical hair cuts and guitars in pop songs.

Hearing over and over about people testing positive and seeing all the obits for ueer activists, creatives, and elders dying, it just... So few of ourelderssurvived that plague and now weare losing so many of the survivors in this one, while an indifferent republican sits in the white house actively hampering efforts to prevent death on a large scale.

I do not want the '80's back. This is so much worse, but it is nightmarishly familiar.

* Friday: I ordered Special Girl food today. I was a touch apprehensive because a correspondent has reported kibble shortages at chewy, but this was the first day the right money was in the right place to do it. They weren't out, but it was up to a ten day delivery day because they are not surprisingly swamped. We're fine. We wouldn't have been if a benefactor hadn't gotten us a couple of extra flats, but we can handle a ten day for once without risking baby girl's health.

I went out at dawn today as a relative had sent a small check and really i needed gas. My suspicion that the price would be dramatically lower was correct and I used what was left on the card after the special girl food order. It was about a dollar and a quarter cheaper than it was last I was at the cheapy. I I'd had an extra ten, I probably could have filled it up.

Don't worry, I wore gloves and washed as soon as I got home.

The smaller cherry trees are all in bloom, though the taller ones are only at the bud stage. Out in the world, a handful of teary waking trees have leaves, though most of the green is ever instead of deciduous and most of the branches are still bare. It is full Spring here by day, but we are far enough North that it is still cold at night. Last night though, was noticeably less so and it really only got properly cold, cold an hour or two before dawn.

The streets were so empty, I didn't even see the usual rough sleepers in doorways. This town only has one shitty cult like men's shelter. I wonder where the rest of them are and if they are safe.

I saw no pedestrians at all, just a few other cars, one motorcycle, and a couple grocery delivery trucks. The shelter in place is holding. I took a chance and stopped at the coop to squint at their starts. Them being closed, I figured it was safe. I wore a mask and touched nothing. They have lots of lettuce, but it must be too early for the other things I'm interested in, so no point in sending a Millennial just yet.

This is the first time I've been further than the path in front of my door about a month. I had only gone that far a couple of days ago at dawn so I could see the cherry trees before anyone else was up.

Last night I dug the fans out of the back of my closet. Normally, this is a very minor nuisance, but normally I don't have a stack of boxes full of altar materials in front of it, nor have Ii usually panic piled stuff on top of them because renovations, nor is there usually a lamp cord twisted up so it jams the closet closed in a way that takes 15 mins to extract. Sigh. I inevitably dropped heavy things on my feet, but I'm ready if it's as hot today as it was yesterday afternoon. The rest is packed back away more properly again, but nothing will really be right until I've got the living room sorted out, which will be a long time at the rate I'm going.

I did mail out a bit of bureaucracy at least. I haven't heard back about the last bit to go out back when the library closed mid-March.

* Cat pictures: https://gwydionmisha.tumblr.com/post/615047723325980672/the-apartment-is-still-piled-with-boxes-and-mess

* Saturday: Squirrel went for a COVID test today. Neither we nor his doctor think he has it, but given what he does for a living, his employer won't let him back without one, which is entirely understandable, and they need him back because it is vital work.

My suspicion is he had the same mild pathogen I had a couple of weeks ago. Same symptom set, if you subtract my chronic stuff. Odds are it's an influenza that muted just enough that the Autumn flu shot mostly, but not quite covered it.

The first I knew of him being sick was him ambling into my office yesterday to have me check him for covid eyes, which he assuredly doesn't have. Apparently he was a couples days in at this point.

I repeat, it doesn't look or sound like COVID. He's already much improved, it's just a precaution because he could kill a lot of people if he were infected.

It is still unnerving.

* Today, I saw more people out on the path and the lawn than I have in over a month. It was safer than it sounds. A lot of it was lone grad students going out to the parking lot and back a while later, presumably on errands or to one of the larger parks.

I also saw things like a mom with a stroller and an older child trying to get some air at a time when the area was empty. A mom and her two kids were out playing frizbee and on the lawn for a couple hours. I know them. It was one household, they moved well away when anyone was coming, and I'm not at all surprised that they were going stir crazy.

Not ideal, but it really did look like people were avoiding people not in their household and timing travel along the paths to avoid others.

"The ACLU blamed “lack of accountability, and a culture of cruelty within CBP” for the girl’s death. “The fact that it took a week for this to come to light shows the need for transparency for CBP. We call for a rigorous investigation into how this tragedy happened and serious reforms to prevent future deaths,” Cynthia Pompa, advocacy manager for the ACLU Border Rights Center, said in a statement."

Andrew Meehan wants you to know that refusing her water and medical care until she went into seizures from dehydration is proof “Border Patrol agents took every possible step to save the child’s life under the most trying of circumstances.” Why didn't "every possible step" include giving her a glass of water? Because that seems not hard to do. I routinely offer people something to drink when they walk into my apartment and I'm not holding them prisoner after they've been wandering for days in the dessert. Food, water, and a medical check up seem like the bare fucking minimum, but that somehow is way beyond every possible step.

* For the record full immersion vs. language pull outs vs. additional content classes in native language vs. new language support in special pull out classes is a long running and emotionally loaded debate in the United States.

For the record as someone who had ESL certification and taught it some (various age groups including a bit of Adult ESL as a sub) and who worked in districts with large immigrant populations, I’m a moderate because different kids need different things and there’s this whole older student vs. younger student needs situation and different levels of academic support needed for kids coming with lots of good schooling vs. no formal schooling at al, and... it’s complicated. Instead of one size fits all, the best method is to figure out what sort of support they need and give them that. Which mostly doesn’t happen because money and staffing and all that jazz. I could do hours of ranting about what I know doesn’t work well because I saw it not working well out in the field and I can list some things that really did seem to be helping. *shakes fists at two of the four districts I worked in*

Short Version: I am against tossing people in with zero help because that is miserable for everyone and some kids can’t do it at all without help, and most of them go backward fast on content. I definitely think proper conversation class like we have for French, Spanish, and German for English speaking students is like 100x better than making them chant route conversations and never letting them deviate from script which felt like child abuse so I refused to teach do ESL there. I am for things like the buddy system where you pair up a kid with the same native language who speaks English and send them to say, Math class, because the kids themselves were for it since it was comforting for the Ukrainian students to be doing something they were good at every day and you could see them picking up English fast. I am for them actually getting pull out specific language classes until they get a reasonable level of proficiency to function, and I am emphatically for giving them content support after they integrate into all English all day for as long as they need it instead of cutting it off cold once they can hold a conversation, because academic English is latinate and we loose so many kids because they look fine chatting away in English with their friends but the textbooks are too far above their proficiency level so they get frustrated and discouraged and drop out.

So look, I don’t have a magic answer for the US, let alone Austria. I just wanted to make clear that this sort of debate they are having in Austria now is one whe have been having here at least as long as I’ve been alive and there is no one right answer beyond, you know, hiring more staff and not totally isolating the refugees.

* Several people have inquired about my foot lately. The thing is, that bodies like mine heal slowly and poorly. It hurts something feirce if I let my foot get cold, or skip my twice daily arthritis meds, as I did yesterday because of the pathogen, but if I run the space heater at night the celebrex really does handle the foot just fine. Even though the AS is being a monster this week, tthe foot is manageable with the caveats.

Seriously, a broken bone with the best non-narcotic arthritis meds is 100x better than a broken bone with the other options. It is healing, but at the super slow rate any illness or injuries heals for me once I passed a certain level of degenerative disease type sick. I am tired of the pain and the care I must take moving about, but I'll take this over say, lung MRSA any day. for me, well or ill or injured are relative things.

I did NOT want to get up and Tavy did his level best to prevent me, but is only a Tiny Terror, and so I masked up made it where I needed to be only a few minutes late. Unfortunately I forgot a gift I was meant to transport from a mutual friend that is still sitting accusingly on the living room table. Sigh. It worked out really well, though, despite my legs being rickety as fuck. Furniture was transported, people dropped off and wood chips for litter transported to appropriate locations. There was enough gas left from their contributions for two forage runs. There was still B parking when I got back, which is another miracle. I feel like an asshole for taking it, but I really can barely walk and the little bit of standing I had to do for things like adjusting the car seats to make room, opening and shutting doors against cat escape and the like took nearly all today's limited number of steps. Temp Tags has shown no signs of movement in literal weeks, so I suspect whatever went wrong to get them temp tags is really bad. I am pretty sure there are now two disabled people living in A where once it was just a Tuesday night visitor. I really do feel like an asshole taking the B slot, but I really couldn't face even a shortish gimp up that small slope.

When I got home, I discovered some kind person has solved bills for this month, so that's a load off. The cats are being low drama tonight. I think the Imperial couple wore themselves out with the busy box I fixed and restocked during lung time. It was a productive day.

1. When I was getting my ESL certification, we had 57 languages in my district and at least 150 in my state in the schools. ESL classes have to be immersion, not only because it's effective, but because speaking Spanish isn't going to help the Ukrainians, the Sikhs, the kid from the Guatemalan highlands who only speaks one of the Mayan dialects, or the Vietnamese kid. This idea that ESL support is holding kids back is bullshit, and if you spend any time in a beginning ESL class, you see a lot of acting out or demonstrating or pictures to get across the idea of the words and concepts.

2. Schools are immersion environments just naturally. Kids are surrounded by English all day at school. They see English language TVs and movies. They hear English on the street. They use English for basic transactions all the time. Even the kids that emphatically do not want to be hear are highly motivated to learn, both survival and for social reasons. May I add, duh.

3. If you make English only the law, it means the teacher can't be flexible when the kids get lost academically. Remember, they aren't just taking a couple years off from other school work to just learn English. They need to keep up in other subjects too. When you say English only, it means that the first grader doesn't get reading instruction ze desperately needs to keep up until ze is proficient. It means that middle schooler can't have a direction or rule too complicated for mime translated even in an emergency. It means that a child might end up two or three years behind in science, math, or social studies because ze can't get extra tutoring in zir native language if the class is too hard to follow vocabulary wise.

4. Yes, they did experiment decades ago with doing a year or so of content courses in native languages, but that got abandoned just about everywhere because the model of inclusion classes with extra ESL support and the occasional translation when absolutely necessary does work better. Being inflexible and absolutist takes away a lot of the support they need to keep up, and learning English is hard enough already. Why make it harder by making it illegal to tailor support to the needs of the child? For example, Ukrainian kids above a certain age generally arrive literate in at least two languages and can use a English/Ukrainian dictionary if they can't figure out a word, but what happens to the refugee kid who speaks for languages, but is barely literate in only one because they were never anywhere long enough with a functioning school system for the child to attend? The gifted kid with a facility for languages will learn okay whatever we do, but what happens to the profoundly mentally challenged kid with the behavioral issues over in the life skills room? Not every child has the exact same needs. Not every child learns the same way. Mechanizing the process just grinds the one who don't fit in the gears.

5. It also means we can't send translated letters home to the parents when there's a problem. Relying on the child that just got into a fist fight to translate the letter truthfully for the parents is... naive? Asinine? It basically flies in the face everything every functioning adult knows about humans and every teacher knows about students. It means we can't send translated letters about academic issues or after school opportunities that might help their child. It means we can't send translated health alert when there's a parasite or microbial epidemic, or if there is an in service or other day off that requires hard working parents to make special child care arrangements. If you can't see why trying to make folks that are learning their English more slowly as they are working and their language centers have migrated, what with them being adults, puzzle out complicated missives from the school is a bad idea, well I give up on you.

6. This is really about racism. Gingrich really gives that away when he not only assumes that all the immigrant kids speak Spanish, not Russian, Ukrainian, tamal, kurdish, etc.. He gives it away when he calls Spanish "the language of the ghetto." He wears his racism on his sleeve most days, and that makes it easy to spot, but that's what's going on behind every push for English only. It's not about what's best for the children or helping them learn faster, but about punishing children who are often already deeply traumatized not just from leaving everything and everyone they cared about behind, but are often from conflict zones or other seriously fucked up situations in their home countries.
