* There have been serious protests in Iran in front of the Saudi Embassy that ended in them storming the building and setting fire to it in response to Saudi Arabia executing a prominent Shia cleric and 46 others. Forty people have been arrested. There are no reported fatalities. The Saudis are saying it was about the War on terror. The religious leadership and Revolutionary guard and flinging fiery rhetoric. The Iranian president had a more tempered response calling the executions a human rights abuse, while also condemning the Embassy attack. Tensions are already high because of... everything, really, and none of this is helping.
* Armed terrorists led by the son of Clivin Bundy have taken over a federal building in Oregon, but they are white so the police opted to negotiate and the media is mostly pretending this is acceptable.
* They stole and destroyed their meds, social security cards, birth certificates, and personal photos because homeless people are that dehumanized and the police are that cruel and evil. They have next to nothing, they thought, so let's destroy what little they have left.

* Yesterday I had scheduled rp. My Mal tormented Lady Hellan y making sure she didn't fall off a parapet while impared then followed her around being nice to her. *shudder* I had a productive pick up scene where my Dhrae went and was nice to the guy who attacked him at his stag party while the man was recovery from wounds until the guy burst into tears. Look, I'm really evil. I know that. I also broke down Halloweentown and did a bunch of necessary grown up things.
Today I was slow starting due to low spoons and hector wanting to sit on his human. The little guy hasn't a lot of time left so I try to let him get all the cuddling he wants. When I went out to the time traveling book drop, it was not only snowing, but sticking a little, so I picked up some provisions while I was out in case there is ice tomorrow and I can't leave my house. I ended up spending more than I should as the vegetarian mince meat is seasonal and this is the only place I've found it around here, so best to stock up. This makes food budget tight as I also need to order emergency soup as I'm down to one can. (Wolfgang Puck Old Fashioned Potato is the one brand and flavour of canned soup I actually like. It is not too salty, but is vegetarian, filling, neither a tomato or a thick cream, as tomato is too acidic when I'm sick and I strictly ration dairy so as not to drive up chlorestorel further than my meds already do, but the small amount of dairy in it is safe. It tastes fine if I add a little pepper. I don't know why all the local stores stopped carrying the one flavour of canned soup that is perfect, but they did, so I have to order it by the flat. This is cheaper than the separate cans would be, but a serious investment requiring payment up front). So I really need to go down and order the soup from the store that does that before I buy protein or other staples. Sigh. Anyway, I brought down the small haloween tree today and did dishes. While I did dishes hector rode around on me yelling in my ear. He had food so i was not sure what the issue was, until I went to sit down. Turned out he wanted me to go sit in my office chair so he could press up against my leg for pre-nap pettins, poor Beastie. I still need to break down the big Halloween Tree, pack up the lighting, and mend all the broken things before closing up the boxes, but the end is in sight.
Why is emergency soup a big deal? It is one of the few foods I can make that is both warm and can be made in less than five minutes. Sometimes, that is all the leg I have left. I also have emergency granola bars for when I need meds right now and can't handle making anything. This is a disability issue. I keep a stock of emergency foods not because I am lazy, but because sometimes it is quick food or no food and no meds that must be taken with food. A large portion of my can stand up time most days is taken up with cooking and housework. I do a lot of food prep that involves things like chopping vegetables. Sometimes I can do a long food prep, do dishes while things cook, then make a salad and finish the meal. Sometimes the trip from chair to bathroom requires a great deal of effort and planning. This is how a body like mine works. Just because I can do a thing one day doesn't mean I can the next. It often means I absolutely can't the next, actually. Picking what to make involves figuring out not only what I want to eat, but what I can handle making.
I mention this as there's been another little wave of mocking the accessibility products on TV, and another wave of people policing other people's disabilities. It does not help that they show able bodied people using the products, though I get that getting able bodied people to use them makes them more affordable. The problem is, it also reinforces ideas like the special spaghetti fork being about laziness and not MS or CP or Arthritis or Parkinson's or paraplegia, etc.. The thing is, I think we all have a little internalized ableism. I know I catch myself now and then. So it's good to remind ourselves that other people with other challenges exist, and a little empathy and imagination and listening are good things to apply.

Date: 2016-01-05 02:33 am (UTC)(It should also be noted that there was, actually, a /peaceful protest/ which was by other people and those people refused to support the guys who took over the building. I think a lot of people were confused by the coverage and not processing that 'peaceful protest' and 'taking over empty federal building' were separate events. Also that the building was closed for the long weekend.)
Additionally, I would hope that all incidents like this would be dealt with first by negotiation. Pointing out that there's a difference in the response is great, but I've seen a lot of people who seem to want to equalize it by sending people in guns blazing to this, rather than treating POC people like they're treating these guys.
There also seem to be a lot of people who are reacting based on headlines or very short summations of what happened and not based on full articles by people familiar with the area or the longer history here.
TL:DR - the guys who took over the building are definitely engaging in sedition at the very least and should be arrested and tried, but many of the responses from the liberal voices on the internet are making me depressed and tired and grumpy.

Date: 2016-01-06 05:18 am (UTC)I can't not be furious about that. I honestly do not understand why we can't have the same high bar for not killing people to a man who broke up a fight and may have been selling loose cigarettes, or a grandmother answering the door for cops her neighbors called to help, or a kid playing by himself in the park, or a first grader asleep on the sofa. Why can't we have the same level of care for everyone's life that we routinely extend to scary armed white men?
