* At the turning of the year, they switched from the aides being paid directly by the state to a way shittier for profit subcontractor, with the expected result. The switch over took two months of labor intensive attempts to get through to a jammed help line with 5-7 hour wait times and lots of an one more things they didn't tell us about being used as an excuse to delay pay. It is a form of wage theft, of course. They did finally catch up all the missed pay at the beginning of March, only not to pay Head Millennial Friday. I'm going to see if I can get through Monday to unleash the power of my righteous anger on them.

This is some Bullshit. Care givers are in extremely short supply just generally and geometrically so thanks to the pandemic and here they are making it incredibly hard for people to get through all the hoops who are already employed and then jerking them around for their earned pay.

As crappy as the lowest bidder caregiver app was, at least the government pays it's bills. The For profit app is worse, just like everything else is worse because for profit means corner cutting.

No one who does this kind of job can afford to keep randomly missing pay checks.

Capitalism.

In other news, I filled out my paperwork for the Wednesday consult, and I am doing much better.

* When I went to bed Monday Morning, Prince Pointy Paws did not wait for me to properly position myself, and instead jumped right on top of the wounded area and started making vigorous biscuits. He knows I don't like biscuit making there, but my normal reaction is to gently nudge his paws away to somewhere more reasonable, not to make a scary sound, lift him off unceremoniously, and then curl into a ball of distress. It was not his fault. he and Livia saw I was doing much better Friday night, and he has no way of knowing there is a serious wound he can't see or smell.

Still, it was impossible to get comfortable for sleep, and I kept wriggling about and endlessly dislodging him to try something else for the next four hours. This made it impossible for him to sleep as well. We did finally start to drift off when the phone rang. It was an identity theft scammer. I then had to try to find a spot that didn't hurt to much. Eventually we drifted off. The phone rang. Wrong number. Eventually we drifted off. The phone rang. Medical thing. Eventually we drifted off. The phone rang. It was caregiver call back. They would not let me sort the pay thing for Head Millennial. Sigh.We did finally manage two hours of sleep when the phone rang. It was them checking to see if I was going to the Wednesday surgery consult. Sigh.

The Emperor was so furious about having his sleep stolen by that infernal machine that he came up onto my pillow to yell at the phone at the top of his lungs. I didn’t blame him even a little.

Sleep was impossible at that point so I went back to my Bujold reread and eventually forced myself up for the evening putter. Those of you reading on Tumblr will notice I didn't accomplish that much. Those of you reading on dreamwidth may have correctly guessed this is why the aggregate didn't go out.

Tuesday, the Head Millennial came over. I called the people who are supposed to pay them, and waited on hold for a few hours for them while they did a half shift around the house. (They arrived too late for callback sign up.) They'd just settled in to watch the Resident Alien pilot on the sofa after logging out when we finally got a live person on the phone. (I'd gotten them hooked on Resident Alien and they wanted to see the show from the beginning. It is even better on rewatch I discovered). They ended up watching four episodes it was so good.

Anyway, it turns out the change over to for profit was such a shit show they decided to delay payment of all the caregivers for a week without, you know, telling them. hence the phone lines being jammed by workers in deep poverty trying to find out why they weren't getting paid and if they'd added yet another hoop to jump through to get the money they'd earned released. These are the workers who can least afford pay delays. This is wage theft and very cruel. Asking them to literally spend hours on the phone trying to find out why they weren't paid is a theft of their time.

I am furious, but there's not a damned thing I can do about it. The best I could manage was ginger cookies for a snack and Resident Alien. Sigh.

There will be very little sleep Wednesday because the consult is mid-sleep cycle. I suspect there is no chance of the aggregate until Thursday or Friday. Sorry.

* So you know how I said the wound is small? Yeah, no. The imaging wasn't even close to thorough enough. Luckily, they did a whole torso CT scan during the ER visit during the big health emergency last year. I have a hole in me slightly larger than a fifty cent piece and no one at the ER bothered to mention it. I've been a ticking time bomb this whole time.

It is really fucking important that we know the size as it dramatically changes the way they do the surgery, which they definitely needed to know in advance. It also moves me way higher on the cancellation wait list than the hole they thought I had would, since the danger of things taken a sudden, possibly deadly turn without much warning is way higher.

They scheduled me for early June, what with the pandemic back up for out patient surgeries, but no one thinks it'll take that long. I'm fast tracked. I've given squirrel the heads up that I could need transport in two to three weeks on fairly short notice, as they think that's how long it will take me to make the top of the wait list.

I kind of loved how mater of fact they were at the surgeon's. I was in getting vitals five minutes before my appointment start time. I was efficiently quizzed on drug allergies and the like. The actual doctor was in immediately after. Zipped through the basics as I knew the drill and have had a similar, less dire version of this surgery before. Clearly knew my massive and crazy medical file and scans, based on comments and questions asked. Gave it to me straight without the round about bullshit that gets on my nerves. Answered the specific question I had. asked a bunch of pertinent questions about my anesthesia reactions, previous surgeries etc. Had a squint at the thing. dropped me off at scheduling. I was in my car 17 minutes after the official appointment start time.

In other news, I injured myself rather badly Wednesday morning about two hours before I was meant to leave for the doctor. I'd had about an hour's sleep. When the phone rang once, waking me up. settled back in. Phone rang once again. I checked it and it was my pharmacy to which I must ask, "WTF." Tavy hates phones and had wandered of, presumably for a snack and to patrol as is his wont in these situation. Livia ran in to grab a bed pet in his absence, as is her custom, climbed on before I properly settled in a safe position, which meant I kept trying to maker small adjustments while petting her and the whole thing hurt rather more than intended given her weight.

When she gave up after a bit, I rolled over, hoping to have better luck and accidentally jabbed myself directly in the center of the wound. It was stunningly painful and meant there was no hope of sleep. Worse, I couldn't take the emergency pain meds because of the appointment, so the entire day was pretty much hell until I got home. even by my standards this was fell an ox level pain. i took the good meds when I got home, sent some now essential emails (including one with directions to Head Millenial and warnings about my pain level.), and prepped for bed.

I napped until partway through the Head Millennial's shift, at which pain the pain yells lured them to see if they could help, which, in fact, they could. I knew sleep was done for a while. we worked out a plan for the evening involving lots of lying down for me, white tea, soup, and ointment for my extremely damaged shoulder (I can't do proper physio, so the shoulder is deteriorating rapidly.) After they clocked out we watched some resident alien until it was time for them to go home.

Don’t worry, I have nutritious, easy to digest food prepped for tomorrow that I just need to microwave.

They take such good care of me.

My Thursday plan involves lots of rest and fluids. I'm upright for hydration and am going to try to push the aggregate out on Dreamwidth without any Thursday news or a truly massive number of non-Ukraine related links, because I only have about an hour or two if I'm lucky before collapse, and fuck knows what my condition will be the next few days, or if I've damaged things enough to make a sudden trip to the ER more likely.
