* "Alone Together Episode 1 - Alexander Siddig & Andrew Robinson:"
* Little Miss Update: She's compensating really well for the mild issues with her right side. she has lots of comfy nap spots and the humans are giving her attention on demand. I'm noticed Tavy's been really good to both girls and taking out his boredom and the tress of being good in other ways. I can live with being occasionally bitten and doing extra laundry, so it is very worth it.
Neither Tavy nor Livia is sitting vigil, but they are starting to treat her the way LM treated hector his last year when he was failing. My feeling is they know she's not well, but they don't think death is immanent.
She is spending the evening with Squirrel, but she's very herself when I've seen her out and about. Her quality of life is still good; it's just once strokes start, it's best to prepare oneself, because it can be really sudden.
* During the Larry Kramer memorial stuff, people made mention of the homoerotic wrestling scene in Women in Love. You'd think I'd have seen it, given my admiration for Glenda Jackson, but I hadn't. It came out the year I was born and for obvious reasons wasn't on TV for me to see growing up. I want to be clear, I have never read Lawrence in a formal educational setting, and I've not read the scholarship either, so this is just my opinion with no clue where the discourse is, academic or other wise.
At my first college, I had a friend who read that set of novels and was utterly enamored of them, Women in love in particular. I tried. I really did, but I gave up around the drownings. The world is full of books; this one wasn't assigned, and when I read on my own time I pick things that don't simultaneously bore me and make me want to smack the characters and/or the author. My friend was a delight, but I couldn't with D.H Lawrence any of the times I attempted to read him.
I thought: I should see this movie. I could at least see what the rest of it was like without torturing myself with the novel. I've seen the movie referenced a lot over the years in assorted contexts. It has cinema and queer history cred. Two birds with one stone, right?
It was 1969, so there were strict limits on what they could get away with, and this thing really was riding the leading edge in a bunch of ways even though the more clear queer content turned out to be not good. (Creepy guy who was really assholish and pretentious and boorish with boy toy). Trust me main character nude wrestling in place of mlm sex with the men talking about love and being eternally bound to each other as they lay all sweaty in the aftermath? Seriously, this is as good as it gets for bisexual coded characters in film at this point in history. I think they may only have gotten away with it because of the kind of masculinity Oliver Reed projected, much the way only someone like warren Beatty could have played a male asexual at that point (Bonnie and Clyde 1967). So props for that in a late sixties movie based on a novel from 1920.
It is beautifully shot. It is so dull for long stretches I wanted to give up. It was a good adaptation of what I remember about the parts I got through when I was... I'm guessing 19? I say that because it annoyed me in exactly the ways I remember being annoyed. At this distance I can see exactly why that particular friend was obsessed with them at that point in his intellectual development. I couldn't articulate my issues with the book at that point, and wouldn't have because pissing on something that mattered to him in the particular way it did would have been dickish.
I've spent the three or so days it took me to drag myself;f through the movie in bites small enough to not throw things at the screen to figure out wording that would explain why it got my back up so much both then as a book and now as a movie. The men are infuriating in a way I was already far too familiar with at that age. Rupert thinks he's being modern and edgey, but he's just a boorish asshole who loves to hear himself philosophize. We've all met this guy, at parties and coffee shops and classrooms. He like to shock with his ideas and his theories. he loves the sound of his own voice. He thinks if he can persuade you to believe exactly what he does it will fix your life. Fuck that! Gerald is a crude and violent boor with no empathy. They just... Gah! Accurate, right? I'm not arguing with the art of it, I just wouldn't enjoy spending even a moment with any of the men in this book in real life, and I really didn't enjoy them in the movie any better despite the quality of the main cast acting.
Then there's the women. I remember how they were in the book because I'd seen in elsewhere in a lot of 20th century writing by men, although D. H. Lawrence must have been an early adopter. He writes his women exactly like a man who has a Theory about What Women are Like. Ugh. I have since studied history of feminism in enough depth to know how this particular view of women fits into various late Victorian/Edwardianish era debates. I also have the hindsight of knowing where that strand of thought was going to lead in the course of the 20th century. His women aren't real people; his women are expressions of an idea he has about women. I couldn't articulate my objection at 19 or 20, but I was instinctively grumpy about it.
So much of the characterization of the women was... not in the dialog, so I was trying to work out how they were going to manage it on screen. They clearly tried. The writer tried. The director tried. Glenda Jackson and Jennie Linden tried. Really they did. They all tried so terribly hard, but often I was looking at cyphers, who would suddenly act or express opinions out of the blue.
So I really, really didn't like it. I can see why he was taken with it and why it's meant to be a classic, but I hate it even more than Catcher in the Rye, which I wouldn't have guessed was possible. (Yes, I know why catcher in the Rye is considered a classic and I've had explained to me what the author was clearly trying to do. They made me reread it for one of my re-certification continuing ed things and having the prof explain context and subtext in it did help, but there are books doing similar work with trauma that do not make me want to curse and throw the book across the room). I'm not sorry I watched the movie once, because it really did clarify why I reacted to the book like a cat reacts to water, I just never want to have to touch another Lawrence anything again.
