Tuesday AM: I strongly suspect Elder kitty had a stroke, likely Monday morning after she retreated to Squirrel's room for the day. He described her as "shaking" before he left for work, so I watched her closely. I think she's having trouble with her legs on one side. It looks like she only has limited control which is messing with her ability to balance and while the legs can take weight for walking one's not carrying it's full share. When she has to stand still for a long time for things like eating, she sort of props the foreleg against the other foreleg and the effort makes her start to shake after a while.

She spent a lot of the last two nights sleeping on my desk, the top of the cat tree or the back of the sofa. The fact that she's making it to the top of the cat tree, even with the table she uses for an intermediate step is kind of impressive, considering. She's ancient and does as little jumping as possible normally and has a lot of easy stages to get to those other locations. Still, she's agile enough to use those trails.

She's old enough that most of her time is spent sleeping, but there's a quality to her sleep tonight that's new and suggests exhaustion.

She's been noticeably winding down for a while. It's not unexpected that something like this would happen, and we've discussed end of life stuff for her. She's still enjoying food. up until yesterday, she was still batting a mouse a round a little. She has pets and her humans and comfortable places she likes to sleep. Even with tonight's obvious impairments, she was yelling at Tavy to back off when he got in too close and I saw her.

She's Squirrel's cat and he's basing decisions on her quality of life, which is frankly what I'd do in his place. She's alert and active when she's awake, and still herself. The leg thing annoys her a bit when it's making what she wants to do harder, but she doesn't seem to be in any pain or deep distress.

I keep petting her when she's awake and trying to make things easier as much as I can. I don't thing she has many days left, even as stubborn as she is.

She's the last of her cohort. When Squirrel first moved in, she watched Mache telling me she wanted pets by gently placing her paw on my arm or leg. I always immediately started petting her. All these years after the cancer took Mache, Little Miss still does it, this endearing gesture she picked up from her eternal rival. Neither Tavy nor Livia have learned it as she doesn't do it when they are watching. When Little Miss goes, she takes this echo of my girl with with her. When I feed her shreds, she still sands silent and polite where I trained her to stand so she wouldn't freak out my poor sweet incredibly nervous Hector, all these years after he died. Little Miss is a very good cat.

As I typed that last paragraph she lifted her head, concerned by my tears. I gave her a pet, so she'd know it's all right.

UPDATE: This evening, she's noticeably improved and had enough strength in her right foreleg to eat without shaking. She’ll stumble a little when a right side leg doesn’t work the way she expects, but she’s getting around okay.

* I am exhausted. I also had a bunch of scheduled stuff on a MUSH where I play. Rupert was recalcitrant Monday-Tuesday night, so I ended up scaffolding the links, but not posting them on tumblr after it got too hard. I batch did them tonight, but the birds are singing and I haven't started last night's actual work beyond set up, programing tumblr, etc.. I still have a pile of links I didn't get around to scaffolding before I crashed Tuesday morning and a scary ass backlog of things to read. Likely I won't have much Wednesday work time either because we expect another big plot thing tonight.

I am sorry. I need sleep desperately.

She really does seem to be recovering well from this stroke. It's just that once these things start.... Yeah.

You and Little Miss are lucky to have each other. Hurts when there's parting because of that.

She's had a long good life. Odds are it'll be fast if it's stroke and dying at home somewhere she's comfortable is best, like her brother did.

We'll miss her, but she is going to get all the loves between now and then.

Slightly belated, but I'm extending sympathies for the ailing Miss - I hope her remaining time is as comfortable as possible.

It is. She's compensating really well for the mild issues with her right side. she has lots of comfy nap spots and the humans are giving her attention on demand. I'm noticed Tavy's been really good to both girls and taking out his boredom and the tress of being good in other ways. I can live with being occasionally bitten and doing extra laundry, so it is very worth it.

Neither Tavy nor Livia is sitting vigil, but they are starting to treat her the way LM treated hector his last year when he was failing. My feeling is they know she's not well, but they don't think death is immanent.
