Today's waking up with an uncontrollable cough and just coughing for an hour to an hour and a half was alarming given the pandemic, but I'm not feverish and this is a thing that happens all the time from when the trees start early spring mating until the Autumn eventually ills off that one weed I'm wildly allergic too. They mowed Monday. I have no purifier until the package arrives choke coughing awake is a thing that happens.

* A thing I wrote elsewhere about why the current outbreak makes me think about the Pestilence of 1665:


I was thinking of the 1665 Pestilence and fire in London. the parcel full of patterns that carried contagion to that once village, who quarantined themselves. They died in great numbers. Their descendants got immunity or partial immunity to AIDs burred in their genetics.

I was thinking of Diary of a Plague Year, written after the fact, but within living memory of people he could interview and which likely drew on real research. As I see the daily death tolls I think of all those parish registers recording the rising tide of horror in stark terms.

I see the articles on grindr, scruff, etc. where the first response from the mlm community was go out and fuck in case we die next week and all those accounts of the people who decided fuck it lets get drunk an screw in every wave of yersina pestis in Medieval and early modern times.

I look at all those medical personnel tending the sick bravely in their masks even as it's killing so many of them, and I think of Plague doctors and priest who stuck with it when their colleagues fled, often succumbing themselves.

The rich and upper middle class fleeing or hiding themselves away, living on provision they could afford to stock while the poor tended each other and often died by the building full or in the streets.

I think of the descriptions of pedestrians skittering away from each other, covering their mouths.

They can see the Iranian plague pits in satellite photos near Qom.

I wasn't there, but I've lived with one plague or another present or historical most of my life.

At the time, amoung other things, it was a way of talking about the stigma around AIDS leading to vastly wider spread and government resistance to funding the search for a cure or even effective treatment because of religious objections from pro-life people to saving or lives.

For me, working on my Master's as a specialist in 14th century Europe when this first aired, the people fleeing infecting other colonies and spreading it as they went sure sounded like real life human behaviior to me. The rich fled the big cities for their country estates carrying it with them into the villages and to their castles and manors. People have written about it extensively then and across the centuries. It's what Poe's Masque of the Red Death was about after all, the way people fleeing any plague or fever spread it my trying to flee ahead of it after they were already exposed. I thought of this when all those people took it with them when they fled Lombardy ahead of the quarantine order.

I have been watching Franklin's fury at people in power in Markab cover up and minimize infection, making it worse, dooming their species for ideological reasons and because their political and religious leaders didn't belief in science. I have been thinking of governments leaving people on cruise ships with connecting air vents circulating infected air while watching Franklin repeat that all the air on the station is re-circulated so they can't effectively quarantine people inside the station. All putting them together in close quarters will do is kill them faster.

They have quarantined the entire station, no ships in or out while they try to figure out if it can jump species.

I am trying to brace my self for what comes next, because this sequence has haunted me forever: the panic, the racist violence, and the wrong headed responses. Delenn and Lenier’s compassion. The terrible images at the end.

That one brave Markab Doctor trying to good right up to the end. In real life I was watching a clip on the news of beautiful doctor in isolation documenting the progression of his illness. The clip was from two days before he died. there was a picture of a nurse on the news who had worked the coronavirus ward right up until it stopped her forever. A lot of good people are dying in this thing and I just keep getting angrier at the malevolent incompetence and the republican calls that we be allowed to be infected and die so that the very rich can make their quarter profits. The best and worst of human nature on display.

This last part isn’t the story of this particular plague year out in the world, but it’s a hard thing. It’s always been a hard thing. People and plagues, the best and worst of humanity on display, and the mourning, always the mourning.
