gwydion: Vlad and Niran kissing (Kiss)
* There was an Earthquake in Japan causing trouble with a reactor that didn't cool down. apparently, they have an earthquake failsafe system that automatically shuts things down in an earthquake, but one of them didn't work properly. Unlike the soviets, the Japanese are serious about multiple back up systems, so it's not an emergency just yet. There is terrifying footage of the related tsunami and a city in flames. The civilian airports are closed due to the disaster, but they are allowing distressed civilian planes to land at the Us military bases.

* Wow, I'd be hard put to think of a set of tests better designed to give me a case of the don't touch mes. I think the first lady found one of my fibro spots too, because pressing there isn't supposed to feel like being stabbed. Fun. Judging from the techies reactions, I'm betting things are okay. The first test was to make sure my arteries were still sending blood to extremities properly, and involved two kinds of probe and blood pressure cuffs on all extremities. The second test was to make sure my cf carrier syndrome isn't masking heart trouble and was a long set of ultrasounds with me breathing and not breathing on command. The main problem with the ultrasound was the pressing against my scars part, which I never like, but was significantly less unpleasant than the little probes.

I keep thinking of something karjack said recently, that she is sick of rape as character development for female characters.
Recently, I was watching the Gosford Park commentary, and something Julian Ffellows said is stuck in my head. He was talking about why he made the American a vegetarian. he said that the food in those great houses is usually pretty terrible, and that it is traditionally considered ill bred to be fussy about one's food. One eats whatever horrible thing is on one's plate without complaint.

This means that regardless of my manners, I am rude by English aristocratic standards because I have allergies, that my friends with celiac are also rude by those standards. I am fascinated by this idea that something over which one has no control, something we are born with makes us all automatically ill masnnered by that standard.

I was born, not only common, but rude. O.o

I have said before that regardless of birth sex and class, I'd have hated living in Austen's time.
* Some of you may remember the web comic based on the phooka from Trin. This is a liyttle animated opening he made to go with the webcomic, feturing my Niran character among others:

There seem to be no reliable casualty figures for the disaster in Japan, as many communities are completely cut off. Four trains full of people are missing. The scale of the thing is hard to grasp.

Apparently, the waves caused by the aftershocks are causing boat accidents all the way on our side of the Pacific. The coast guard is suggesting people stay away from the shore, particularly in Northern California, both for personal safety and so as not to impede first responders.
